Permission Repair Error Message

Recently my computer started acting strange. Prolonged pinning and unable to click off boxes on web sites, just weird behavior. I tried to repair the permissions but I keep getting and error message in red "Stopped by user" and the permissions are not repaired. I ran DiskWarrior with no success and finally reinstalled Leopard. Just the OS install with applications and setting moved over. But the weirdness continues and I still can't repair the permissions and I still get the error message.
Help. Thanks.

When problems keep returning after clean install, DU checks, directory rebuilds, and whatever else we do, I've learned to check the drive for bad blocks, even if it's a new drive. A clean install should fix things and eliminate any software problems. But if problem returns, I think you have to do a disk scan with TechTool to make sure the drive is OK. If you zeroed the drive before you installed OS, DU would have put away bad blocks in 'bad block file'. TT turned up ONE bad block on my iMacG4 17 but it kept coming back after it was 'put away' three times. Apparently, if bad sector is in a 'critical area' on the drive, it may return ?? (If interested, check Apple arts for info on DU and zeroing.) Anyway, if you just use DU to zero the drive (twice) before next install, that should cover it. TT scan and DU zero take a long time, so be patient. Good Luck, Mark

  • Permission Repair Error

My iMac has been very slow today. I used AppleJack for routine maintenance and during permissions repair got a host of errors like the following:
    | Error | dyld: shared cached file was build against a different libSystem.dylib, ignoring cache
I tried to back up with SuperDuper without repairing permissions, but it threw a similar error and crashed.
What does this mean and what do I do about it?

    See if this helps:
If you see this error in your system logs or in the terminal
"dyld: shared cached file was build against a different libSystem.dylib, ignoring cache"
Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder, enter or paste this command, press enter.
    sudo updatedyld_sharedcache
You will be prompted to enter your admin password which will not be echoed; press enter.

No, it wouldn't while you are booted from your Hard Disk—you need to run Disk Utility from your Instal Disk to do this. See Using Disk Utility and fsck to resolve startup issues or perform disk maintenance.

  • Error Message 040EAE-5D-0000000 when trying to create recovery media creator

I need to create a recovery backup, and have a 20 G brand-new Verbatim thumb drive for it.  When I go to try to create a backup on the thumb drive, the first error message was a general one.  Started over, and then got the error code  040EAE-5D-0000000.  I can't find anything on this error code after searching the forum, and on Google.  I need to create a backup on the thumb drive, but I just can't seem to get this to work.  Help, please.

Things got worse.  In doing research, it appeared that a driver might have been the issue.  So I went to the Toshiba site to look at drivers for my laptop.  There were a number listed.  I installed several system updates, and now my laptop won't boot windows.  The following is the startup repair error message I'm now getting:
    Problem Event Name:  StartupRepairOffline
    Problem Signature 01: 6.1.7600.16385
    Problem Signature 02: 6.1.7600.16385
    Problem Signature 03:  unknown
    Problem Signature 04: 21200529
    Problem Signature 05: AutoFailover
    Problem Signature 06: 7
    Problem Signature 07: Bad driver
    OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1
    Locale ID: 1033
I really don't want to put this thing in a box and ship it to Toshiba.  I need to back out the drivers that were installed.  But I need to get Win 7 to boot to do so.  It would have been great if I had been able to create the system recovery media that I was trying to create in the first place.

  • Repair Disk Permission Error Message

I routinely run Disk Permission Repair through the DU as part of maintaining my Mac (I can't help it - I was once a Windows user :)). Today when I ran this on my primary drive, I received this error:
Warning: SUID file "usr/bin/quota" has been modified and will not be repaired
I checked previous posts and this ISN'T listed as one of the disk repair messages I could safely ignore.
Any ideas as to how to fix this and how serious an error this is?
    Thanks.

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448 indicates most but not all warnings (not errors). Ignore it.

I can't seem to open (view) my photos.  I get an error message that says "the file couldn't be opened because you don't have permission to view it. To view or change permission, select the item in the finder and choose File. Get info."  I have never had this happen before?  Thanks!

    Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
    2 - Run Option #1, Repair Permissions.

  • TextEdit Save Error Message "you don't have permission..."

TextEdit, in both Mountain Lion and now Mavericks, displays what appears to be a fake "Save "error:
"You don’t have permission to write to the folder that the file “XXXXX.txt” is in.
Your changes will not be saved until the problem is resolved."
I have repaired permissions several times with no result. The permissions are clean, not requiring fixing.  I am Admin.  I should be able to save anywhere, altho I have tried saving in many different places just to test.
It does not ask for the Admin password.
    Here's when it happens:
    1) Open a document. either new or existing.
    2) Type some text in it.
    3) Save -- choose destination if new and it seems to work.
    4) Start typing in the document
    5) After a few seconds I get the above error message that drops down from the title bar at the top of the document.
    6) I have to click the OK button and I can go on typing.
    Repeat
Save document, type a few characters, get error message, click OK.
    Repeat all day long.
Yet it seems that my changes have been saved.
    Most annoying.

Wow.  Why bother reading the forum if you are convinced the solution isn't going to work before even trying it?
Another viewer besides myself commented above that they repeated the process and it worked for them, so it's not exclusive to my setup.
A search for textedit revealed 97 files.  The search took 12 seconds on my eight core Mac Pro.
I quit EasyFind, opened TextEdit and made a simple change in the preferences, saved and then quit TextEdit.
I searched again with EasyFind, sorted by Modified and found eight files had been changed at the exact time I quit TextEdit.  One of those is the culprit.  I deleted them all.
No, I don't work for EasyFind, nor do I know the people, nor do I receive compensation of any type from them.  I like it and recommend it because it just plain works and I like to share good info like that with the Mac community,  (BTW, it's free)
Good luck with solving it on your end.  If you find a more scientific solution please share it so we can see how it should be done by a real tech support guy instead of an amateur like me.  (I was an Apple Var at one time, now I do some support for my friends.  I'm on about my tenth Mac, the first being a Fat Mac, and have two Macs and an iPhone at this time.  No doubt I have no idea what I'm doing)
You really are funny!  You must be a, oh never mind, I was going to name a political party.

I receive the follwing error message when trying to open my ipod touch/itunes "the itunes libary.itlfile is lockedon  a lockdisk or you do not have write permission on this file. How do I resolve this problem?

    Repair iTunes Security Permissions
Right-click on your main iTunes folder and click Properties, then go to the Securitytab and click Advanced. Use the Change Permissions... button grant to your account (or the Users group) and SYSTEM full control of this folder, subfolders and files, then tick the option to Replace permissions entries... which will repair permissions throughout the library. When complete switch to the General tab, click in the Read-only check box to clear it, then click Apply.
If you don't have the option to change the permissions then use the Owner tab and Edit... button to take ownership from an account with administrator privileges. Tick the option to Replace owner on subcontainers and objects.
Repeat with the media folder if it isn't stored inside the main iTunes folder.
If you've brought over the library from another computer you may also want to remove any "mystery" identities (S<string of dashes & digts>) that have come over from the old computer...
The images above are from Windows 7. Hopefully the system isn't too different in Windows 8.

  • How do I recover photos lost by iPhoto. I tried using Time Machine but I get an error message saying that I don't have permission.

IPhoto quit in the midst of importing some photos to the library.  When I reopened it, it had some events, that were imported a few days earlier, which had no photos.  They were missing.  I tried Time Machine to restore the iPhoto Library to a version made a couple of hours earlier.  But I got an error message saying that I did not have permission.  I tried restarting iPhoto while holding down the Option key and tried to access the Time Machine iPhoto Library, but that only got me a portion of the library and not the portion that was missing earlier.  When I restarted iPhoto this time, even more of my photos were missing.

Try repairing the permissions on your Time Machine, Take a look at this link, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1452

  • Installed 10.7 to my MacBook Air but get an error message "you do not have permission to save to macintosh HD"  .

I downloaded and installed 10.7 to my MacBook Air with no issues, but now when I try to save documents to macintosh HD, I get an error message "you do not have permission to save to macintosh HD"  I can save to home without issue, just not to theHD.  I tried repairing permissions-no progress.
I cannot create new folders on the HD, either.  In the macintosh HD permissions window:
    Admin            Read&write
    Wheel            Read
    Three heads:  Read
AppleCare on the phone says I have to re-install the OS using Recovery-this seems a bit over the top.  Any ideas?

    RESOLVED
OS 10.7 no longer allows admin users to save to the top directory-only the pre=determined four folders are allowed now.
By moving all content not in the four main top directory folders (System, Users, Library, Applications) to the directory)s) just below, all was resolved.
The guys at the Genius Bar were just as surprised as me-so we learn something every day, although Apple could let their Geniuses know..

  • My Macbook Pro began crashing when I tried running safari. An error message came up asking that I repair the HD volume. Before I was able to run repair, computer shut down. Now I can not get it to boot. I tried booting in safe mode to no avail. Pls help.

Can someone please help me with a Macbook Pro booting question?
Recently, my mid 2010 MacBook Pro has started acting up when I am on Safari. Safari would unexpectedly crash multiple times in a row, then run fine for a while, then again, crash repeatedly. Not long after this began happening, an error message from my Prosoft Drive Genius 3 software, threw out a message that a serious error had occurred and I needed to repair the HD volume. Before I was able to run the software to repair the HD volume, the machine stopped working. I turned off the Macbook and when I tried to restart, it would not boot. I have since removed all external hardware from my machine and tried several times, unsuccessfully, to boot. I have also tried booting in safe mode when also does not work.
Any suggestions?  Thanks for your help.

    Try SMC reset:
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. (four keys together)
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
