Permission settings on folders

Hi folks...
Loading fonts into the Library\Fonts folder on the mac so that they can accesible to multiple users. However on OSX 10.4.11, I am unable to change the permissions on the main Font folder and all subfolders - the Apply to all enclosed item button is grayed out even though I am logged in as Adminstrator. I have tried running the Disc Repair utility on permissions and no change. I have another Mac running OSX 10.4.10 and this has no problems.
The issue is that there are 300 font families I need to load and share amongst several users. The only way to allow this is to go into each folder and share it as well change the permissions on each font stored within the folder. As you will agree, life is far too short.
One solution would be to re-install OS from scratch - ie a clean install. This would be a painful step and I'm hoping there's an easier solution.
Thanks in advance
Phil

As per my previous, changing the permissions on the root directory does not fix the problem. The problem is that I can't change all the permissions for all subfolders or fonts within Library/Font.
For example,
Macintosh HD/Library/Font/MyFonts/AdobeCaslon/Caslon.otf is the path to the actual font. I have to manually change the permissions on the Library, Font, MyFonts and AdobeCaslon folders as well as on the Caslon.otf file itself in order for other Users to see it. I am unable to make this change globally as the option to include all subdirectories is greyed out.
I understand the need to change permissions. Why is the option to include all subdirectories greyed out on the permissions pallette?

  • Changed Permission Settings: "System extension cannot be used"

I was having some weird problems with file sharing on my network recently, so I tried changing around some of the permissions on my drives to see if I could resolve it. For some reason I was getting messages saying I didn't have permission to copy files from one computer to another on my network. This seemed to come on randomly as we have been doing file transfers this way for quite some time now. I looked at our file sharing preferences in the System Preference's and added all 4 drives from my Mac Pro in there and made sure that my username had full read and write capabilities. I then tried logging into my Mac Pro from my iMac, just like I've done in the past, and I was still unable to copy the files. So I removed all the folders and turned off file sharing. I then clicked 'Get Info' for my main Macintosh HD and tried changing the permission settings there. I clicked the option to make my username the owner, and then I clicked 'Apply to enclosed items...' and this brought up a progress bar that I let go for about 10 minutes. Then I got a pop-up error message stating "System extension cannot be used" and had an extension path listed underneath, saying it was installed improperly and cannot be used. This happens an endless amount of times. It seems to be giving me this message for every single extension on the computer. If I hold down enter the pop-ups just keep coming with different extensions listed.
I hope someone with some insight on how permissions work in OS X Lion can give me some advice on how to resolve, and possible the correct way I should be setting up sharing if I've been doing wrong all this time. What strikes me as odd is that I never had any issues with sharing anything up until about a week or so ago, and I can't remember if there were any system updates that I installed that might have something to do with this.
Any help is much appreciated, thanks!

I had this problem recently in addition to my laptop getting stuck on the Apple logo and spinning icon. It took me a long to time to work through it so I thought I would share what I did to make it easier for others.
The best thing to do when having permission problems is to do a 'disk permissions repair'. You can do this using the disk utility app found in your applications/utilities folder. This will attempt to rewrite all the permissions that were incorrectly set. When it is doing this it is common to get a message saying 'ACL...found and not expected...' do not go and delete these files. Its normal for this correction process to take more than 30 minutes, for me it took an hour.
If this proccess doesnt work for you than you can also try a disk repair.
If you can't boot using the normal disk you can also access this program through the recovery boot (holding Command-R of Option at startup), through the safe mode (holding Shift on start up) or through a recovery CD. You can also boot in a terminal type mode but this is a last ditch effort as a misspelt command could do more damage. personally, because I do not know what the commands I am using actually mean, I would recommend talking to a person at apple then using this approach.
    Hope this helps

  • Command to set modify Advanced Security Settings (Audit Settings for folders) on windows 2008

    Hello,
We have requirement to modify  Advanced Security Settings (Audit Settings for folders) on windows 2008. I am looking for a command which does this job.
I know, using group policies I can do this; in fact I had done this using group policies. However, I need to do this on number of servers which are not in domain. There are around 15 folders on which I need to enable Auditing; manual editing folder advanced
permissions is a cumbersome job. Hence, I am looking for a command line options.
I need to know how command can be utilised to enable Audit option on a folder. Please share a command which can do this; once I get the command, I will create a batch file for other necessary folders. (BTW, this is not a scripting question, I just need to
know the command hence, please do not re-direct me to scripting forum)
Manually through GUI, I am setting following.. snaps are given below

  • Best practices for permission settings in SharePoint 2010

    Hello,
Does anyone know if there is a good "best practices" paper\article for SharePoint permissions in SharePoint 2010. I have a pretty good idea of what i would like to do. The problem is that there is another group that handles security for the SharePoint
sites. It's really bad. Individuals have permissions and some of the group memberships really don't make much sense.
I am tasked with cleaning up our permission settings in our farm but I would like something to give to that team. I want it to show what it is we need to do and why. What the best practices are. It's also going to be good for me as I will use it
to compare with what I would like to see done.
Can anyone recommend a link that covers this in detail.
    Thanks

  • Sculpture Synth: Saving Settings and Folders

Does anyone know how to save your settings into folders in Sculpture? I can't find the settings/presets anywhere in the Finder. I'm stumped....?

Your saved plugin settings will go to:
    /Users/YOU/Library/Application Support/Logic/Plug-in Settings/Sculpture/
You can create folders within that and organise however you want, and the folder structure will show up in Logic.

  • Adjust permission settings - Option Menu ?

    hi,
I'm trying to test a wordpress site via the browserlab - DW cs5,  i can view the un-styled content but it does not render the attched style-sheet ?
I understand the instructions below - but i can't find the Options Menu described below ?
    To allow permissions
To allow permissions for the network locations associated with a particular file and its dependencies, initiate a preview of the file in BrowserLab, and then click the Allow button in the dialog box that appears.
Note: If you click the Deny button in the dialog box, any resources in the specified locations will not be uploaded to BrowserLab, and will therefore not appear in the preview.
To set or adjust permissions manually
To set or adjust permissions manually, follow the instructions below.
Choose Permission Settings from the Options Menu in the upper-right corner of the BrowserLab panel.
In the Adobe BrowserLab Permission Settings dialog box, click the plus (+) button.
In the URL dialog box, enter the path to the folder for which you want to allow permissions, and click OK.
Note: The URL you enter is the top-most URL. Anything in directories below that URL will be accessible to BrowserLab.
(Optional) Adjust permission settings as necessary. To do so, select a location in the Adobe BrowserLab Permission Settings dialog box, and select the Deny option if you want to deny permission for that location, or the Allow option if you want to allow permissions for that location.
To delete a location, select it and click the minus (-) button.
    Many thanks

    Hi Wayne,
In the upper right corner of the BrowserLab panel should be a small list icon with a dropdown arrow. If you click on that, it should open the menu. The menu should have the following items: Permission Settings..., BrowserLab Help, About BrowserLab, Close, & Close Tab Group.
If you open that menu and you don't see Permission Settings, then you will need to update your DW CS5 to the latest version. You can do that by going to Help -> Updates, and in the Adobe Application Manager that opens, make sure Dreamweaver is checked, and clicking the Update button.
Let me know if you find it and get this working or not,
    Mark

ok, I got it working! *phew*
I goofed up on adding the file and not using the proper password.
Here are some tips to help out: http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bbf2248/0
I had uninstall my Reader Extensions and then reinstall them to get it to work.
I don't know if there is an easier way to correct it, but that worked for me and it did not mess up any of the other LC products (that I can tell yet...)

Hi: I got my ipod in 2011 and synced it to my old computer. The music that Is on it is from imported cd, so I cannot transfer purchases to my new computer. I also want to keep the settings, favourites, folders, and information that is on my ipod. How do i sync it to new computer? Please Help.

You will also have to copy the iPod backup file to the new computer and then restore your iPod from backup using that backup. The file is located here:
iTunes places the backup files in the following places:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: If you do not see the AppData or Application Data folders, you may need to show hidden files (Windows XP,  Windows Vista and Windows 7), or iTunes may not be installed in the default location. Show hidden files and then search the hard drive for the Backup directory
You can also  make a backup on the new computer by conneting the iPod and right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and selecting BackUp. When you retore from backup sometime the app folder structure get messed up.

  • Strange permission settings that are unchangeable

Hi guys. I have been searching for hours to try and find this answer, but I have been unable to - hence my post.
After doing a Leopard upgrade many months ago I had transfered about 300gb of files over to my external drive. I went to start using them today only to find that anytime I try to move anything I keep having to authenticate. Clearly an ownership/permission issue. I have been able to fix most the problems with the following line in terminal:
    sudo chown -R MYNAME:staff "/Volumes/MYVOLUME"
However I still have a lot of folders that are not changing no matter what I do. Many of my folders have a permission setting of "drwxr-xr-x+". Note that it has a + sign on the end. I can't work out what these are or how to fix them. I've tried everything.
Is there a line of code that I can use which will overwrite these **** folders once and for all and just set their permissions to the way they should be?
I just need them to have the same persmissions that they would by default if I were to create a new folder in the finder.
    Any help is appreciated.

I'm at a loss to explain that. To make sure you are doing it right:
You select the partition (not the top drive) in DU and press the info button in the DU tool bar. A window should pop up with a long list of attributes of the drive. One line should be
Can turn owners off: Yes (or No)
It sounds like we are looking at very different options. I'm on a MacBookPro Core 2 Duo. Not sure if that makes a difference.
    No difference whatsoever.

  • Sharing and permission issue of folders thru different accounts

    Hello,
After installing Lightroom 5 I've lost permission to write on some sub-folders located on an external drive.
On the screen shot (attached) the main user called "Alfredo1" is not my user account name and as far as I know is not a reall user on my machine.

Is this happening on the original boot drive or on a secondary drive? If the latter, do a 'Get Info' on the drive and click the checkbox for 'Ignore ownership on this volume.' If it's the boot drive, fire up Disk Utility and run the Repair Permissions until it comes up clean. This would not be expected to affect permissions on data files directly, but might allow you to click on the lock so that you can authenticate and change the permissions manually. Possibly you will need to Repair Disk with either DU or Disk Warrior. In any event the lock should never be non-clickable for the original admin user.
If it's a shared volume, check with the server admin or the owner of the hosting computer, ask them to propagate permissions downward.

  • Script Grant Full Access Permission on Multiple Folders and Sub-Folders

Hi, I'm having a issue trying to run this script.
1.)It provides each folder with "Special" Permission over them. (Read, Write, Modify, Full control). Is there a way of making it "Full Control" Permission instead of special permission?
    or
2.) Is there a way to make the Object Apply to "This Folder, sub folders and files" (when i change it manually this it changes to Full Control Access)?
What I tried doing in the following script is removing the inheritance of the folder then applying its level of authentication. I do get some errors and I'm pretty sure it's has to do with some files being password protected.
    $domainG = "Domain\Group"
    $dir = "X:\Folder\Folder\*\SameName"
    $subfolder = Join-Path $dir "\*"
    $subsubfolder = Join-Path $subfolder "\*"
    $subsubsubfolder = Join-Path $subsubfolder "\*"
    $subsubsubsubfolder = Join-Path $subsubsubfolder "\*"
    $acl = Get-Item $dir |get-acl
    #This removes inheritance
    $acl.SetAccessRuleProtection($true,$true)
    $acl |Set-Acl
    # Gives full control
    $rule = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.FileSystemAccessRule -ArgumentList @($domainG,"FullControl","Allow")
    $acl.SetAccessRule($rule)
    $acl |Set-Acl
    $acl = Get-Item $subfolder |Get-Acl
    # This adds full control to the subfolder
    $rule = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.FileSystemAccessRule -ArgumentList @($domainG,"FullControl","Allow")
    $acl.SetAccessRule($rule)
    $acl |Set-Acl
    $acl = Get-Item $subsubfolder |Get-Acl
    # This adds full control to the sub sub folder
    $rule = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.FileSystemAccessRule -ArgumentList @($domainG,"FullControl","Allow")
    $acl.SetAccessRule($rule)
    $acl |Set-Acl
    $acl = Get-Item $subsubsubfolder |Get-Acl
    # This adds full control to the sub sub subfolder
    $rule = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.FileSystemAccessRule -ArgumentList @($domainG,"FullControl","Allow")
    $acl.SetAccessRule($rule)
    $acl |Set-Acl
    $acl = Get-Item $subsubsubsubfolder |Get-Acl
    # This adds full control to the sub sub sub subfolder
    $rule = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.FileSystemAccessRule -ArgumentList @($domainG,"FullControl","Allow")
    $acl.SetAccessRule($rule)
    $acl |Set-Acl

The constructor you are using for the FileSystemAccessRule will only apply to the object the ACE belongs to. To have it apply to anything else, you'll have to use the constructor with the following arguments:
    <Principal>, <Rights>, <InheritanceFlags>, <PropagationFlags>, <Type>
The one you're using doesn't have the flags. Those two flags enumerations control two things that you'll see in the GUI: 'Applies To' and 'Only Applies to this Object'. To have the ACE apply to the folder, subfolders and files (and have it not show as 'Special'
in the GUI), you'll want the InheritanceFlags as 'ContainerInherit, ObjectInherit' and the PropagationFlags as 'None'. Try this:
    $rule = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.FileSystemAccessRule -ArgumentList @($domainG,"FullControl", "ContainerInherit, ObjectInherit", "None", "Allow")
    On a side note, check
this module out. It greatly simplifies access control. If you're interested in it and have any questions, let me know.

  • Where are account settings files/folders?

I would like to back up the settings for the user accounts I have set up on the family computer, and while I can access all of the account home folders from the root admin account, I haven't been able to figure out where the system stores the settings for the user accounts as they have been configured in the Accounts preference pane. I have tried to search and browse for them among the hidden files, but nothing is obvious to me.

    Hi
The local NetInfo Database is where you should be looking. Launch terminal (Applications/Utilities) and key in:
    man nicl

  • Used migration assistant, profile on Lion Mac doesn't have permission to profile folders

I used migration assistant to copy my profile from my Snow Leopard MacBook Air to my new Lion MacBook Air.  Everything seems to have copied, but I log into my profile and get permission denied errors when trying to open any profile folders (desktop, documents, Library, etc).  Control panel crashes as it probably can't write to the user preferences folder because of permissions.
I have tried disk utility, but it still doesn't work.  I tried safe mode, but that didn't help either.
Any thoughts?  (other than changing permissions on every single folder!)

    1. Boot holding CONTROL+R
    2. Choose your language
    3. Choose Utilities from the top menu bar and open Terminal
    4. Type: "resetpassword" without quotes.
    5. The Reset Password Utility will open:
    6. Highlight your Hard Drive in the top section
    7. Select your username in the first drop down
    8. Leave the remaining options alone and click the "Reset" button at the bottom of the screen to reset your permissions and ACL's associated with your home folder to what they should be.
    9. Close the Utility.
    10. Click the Apple and choose "Restart"
If your issues persist after this you will need Terminal commands to resolve this.
If you need to supply me your shortname so I can give you the proper commands
Your shortname is the name of the folder in "Macintosh HD/Users/" with the house icon.

  • Powershell to find users with SendAs permission on Public folders

I have been having great difficulty getting this to work and I am baffled as to what it is I am missing!
We have a lot of public folders and some users have SendAs permissions - we want to find them.
I have found various suggestions on line like these two lines -
    Get-PublicFolder -Recurse -ResultSize 10 | Get-PublicFolderClientPermission | Select Identity, User, AccessRights
this works and lists the folders and all user permissions but my attempts to filter it fail
    Get-PublicFolder -Recurse -ResultSize 10 | Get-PublicFolderClientPermission | Select Identity, User, AccessRights | Export-CSV "PublicFolderPermissions.csv" -NoTypeInformation
this I is claimed to work (and I would expect it to) but instead fills my CSV with folder and user information but the AccessRights value (clearly displayed in the first example) is replaced by this
    "Microsoft.Exchange.Data.MultiValuedProperty`1[Microsoft.Exchange.Management.MapiTasks.PublicFolderAccessRight]"
    So I tried this
    get-publicFolder -recurse -ResultSize 10 | Get-PublicFolderClientPermission | foreach-object  {write-host $_.Identity, $_.User, $_.AccessRights}
which works but any attempt to redirect to a file, export to csv or add-content to a file either outputs nothing or outputs everything but gives the accessrights as "Microsoft.Exchange.Data.MultiValuedProperty`1[Microsoft.Exchange.Management.MapiTasks.PublicFolderAccessRight]"
does anyone have any idea how I get the information I want into a CSV (where I can then filter it) or filter the results by SendAs and save to CSV?
Obviously the -ResultSize 10 if for testing and will be replaced with Unlimited.
I assume  my filters on SendAs always failed because rather than passing along $_.AccessRights as the string I see on screen I get the string I see in the CSV so nothing matches SendAs.
I am clearly missing something obvious so any help would be appreciated.

That has got me close to it I think but identity returns something like "******.net/Microsoft Exchange System Objects/Info" where "Info" is a public folder under a folder called "Postroom"
This does at least restricts the results to users having SendAs permission so that is a lot of progress
Get-publicfolder does translate the returned identity to a path so that should help
Unfortunately piping to export-csv does not return the desired results
redirect to file does save the information though so that should be helpful
    Many thanks
