  • I don't have permission to access certain folders in my external hard drive?

Every year at my college, we get our laptops re-imaged and completely wiped of all their data for new programs, etc. Prior doing this, I backed up all my files onto a WD external hard drive. This is not the first time I've gotten my macbook wiped or used the hard drive, so I am not sure why I'm experiencing problems this time around. In the hard drive I am able to access the Applications folder, but all the rest of the folders such as Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Pictures, etc. which is located in the Users folder under my previous user acc, have a tiny no entry symbol on the bottom right corner. When I click on the folder it tells me "The folder "blahbalh" can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents."
The only security the drive has on it is an initial prompt for a password that I enter once the hard drive is plugged into my mac. There are no problems there. So why don't I have permission to view certain folders?
Any help would be appreciated. I have all my work on there. Thanks.

First make sure you have read & write access to the folder you're trying to restore to. You should be able to see its contents in the Finder, and to move files in and out of it.
This is an exception to the rule that you should never make any changes to backup data. I've tested this procedure in OS X 10.8 only. It should work with later versions, but I don't know whether it works in earlier versions. Use this procedure  only for files that were backed up from your home folder, or a folder on another volume created by you, and would normally be writable by you. Do not touch backups of system or application files.
In the Finder (not in the time-travel view), navigate to the backup volume, then to the folder named "Backups.backupdb", and then to the snapshot you want to restore from. The snapshots are folders labeled with the date when they were created. Inside each of those folders is a file hierarchy like the one on the volume that was backed up. Descend through the hierarchy until you come to a folder named "Users," and inside that, a folder with your user name. The procedure will be different if you're trying to restore files on another volume.
Select the folder and open the Info dialog (command-I). Click the padlock icon in the lower right corner of the window and authenticate. In the Sharing & Permissions section, give your account Read & Write access. You may have to close the dialog and repeat this step in order for the change to show up. Then click the gear icon and select Apply to Enclosed Items from the popup menu.
Try the restore operation again, in the time-travel interface.

  • Id CC2014 won't start up due to 'not having the rights to access preference folders'. Has anyone encountered this as well?

After installing Id CC2014, i am unable to start up the program. It says that i don't have the correct rights to access the preference folders (plural). I checked, but i have write&read rights in all folders. So, after re-installing and facing the same problem, i hope anyone of can help me out here...

  • My users no longer have permission to access their folders

My users can log onto the server and see their folders, but they cannot access them. All folders appear with the "no entry" sign on them. Our servers hard drive recently failed and was replaced. This is when the problem started. What do I do?

Can you tell if it's Time Machine that's showing that error message?  I took a look at item C5 in Time Machine Troubleshooting.  It specifically refers to Leopard (OS X 10.5), which is another confirmation that the old advice you found about that hidden file no longer applies.
yep. it's time machine. when it tries to back up and fails, a message displays about it being read-only and to go ahead and repair it or reformat it. if i go to time machine prefs and select that drive to use for backup, that's when the other message about "necessary read, write and append privileges" displays.
So you mean the Desktop icons for the mounted Time Capsule disk, etc.  The icon for the volume containing the "sparsebundle" files should have an AirPort fan, not a network volume icon with the three people.  Item B4 of Time Machine Troubleshooting mentions that, although I'm not sure the advice given there would be useful in your case.
yep. i know, but that's what's there, nonetheless.
If you launch AirPort Utility, put the Time Machine into "manual setup" mode, select the Disks panel, then the File Sharing tab, is "Enable file sharing" checked?  What is the setting for "Secure Shared Disks"?
i checked and tinkered with this part already, too. it has always been set to enable. it originally had with "time capsule password", then i tried also with "disk password". now it's back to TC password. again, everything was fine a few days ago, and i haven't touched any airport or TM settings in probably a year or more.
small update: i was able to get into the capsule's backups finally after a few more passes using disk repair, so i can see that it was happily backing up until the 1st, when i had the aforementioned problem with my laptop. i can't see this being mere coincidence, so i know i must've also damaged the permissions for the TM/TC at the same time.

  • InDesign CC Start-up Error: "...lack sufficient permissions to access the preferences folders"

    InDesign CC
Having successfully installed many CC apps on my Mac Pro Desktop, I proceeded to do the same on my laptop. However, after two attempts at uninstalling and re-downloading both InDesign CC and the Creative Cloud Desktop. When starting up InDesign, I repeatedly get this error message: "Error: Unable to launch Adobe InDesign as you lack sufficient permissions to access the preferences folders. Ensure that you have appropriate permissions and then restart Adobe InDesign." and can go no further.
I can find no instruction on how to do this, or reference to anyone else getting this error.

I've seen this stock suggestion posted on many discussions. I've solved the problem with LiveChat with Adobe Support:
Mohammed: As I understand you are not able to launch CC apps since it is giving error "Unable to launch Adobe InDesign as you lack sufficient permissions to access the preferences folders". Is that correct?
    Paul: Yes
Mohammed: Please open a Finder window. Choose Go > Go To Folder. Type ~/library and you will get Preferences folder.
    Paul: In Library now
Mohammed: Are you able to find preferences folder?
    Paul: yes
Mohammed: Control-click the folder and choose Get Info.
Mohammed: Expand the Sharing & Permissions section.
Mohammed: Click the lock icon in the lower-right corner. Enter your administrator user name and password when prompted, and then click OK.
    Paul: done
Mohammed: Please click on + icon and add the Admin and all users showing.

Mohammed: Set permission for all users and admin as read/write
Mohammed: Click the Gear icon, and select Apply to Enclosed Item
Paul: to each of the individual users and groups?
    Paul: one at a time?
    Paul: I've done it.
Mohammed: Please open a Finder window. Choose Go > Go To Folder. Type ~/library/Application support and give full permission to Adobe folder.
Paul: That's completed... I've added all the users and groups, given each 'Read and Write" and extended the permissions to all enclosed items.
Mohammed: Now please open a Finder window. Choose Go > Go To Folder. Type /library/Application support and give full permission to Adobe folder.
Paul: OK, I understand... I am proceeding with your instruction.
    Mohammed: Thank you.
    Paul: I'm finished.
Mohammed: Please close all Adobe Applications and then launch InDesign CC and let me know the result.
Paul: OK... looking good so far Mohammed... fingers crossed!
    Paul: Thanks Mohammed... it's launched!
Mohammed: Excellent, I am so happy to hear this from you.
Mohammed: I certainly appreciate your patience in this process.

  • Can't save multiple folders to external drive. Get: "The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items." when dragging large folders to mac os extended journalled external drive from OS 10.6.8

    Hi
    I am feeling  VERY desperate!
After losing an external drive [dont ask....]  -   I got  another one :  2TB WD formatted properly [ OS extended journalled for mac ] ready for action to move  my thousands of files and images and ppts in hundreds of folders across from the laptop to this drive because I travel a bit with the laptop and this is too risky not to back up at home.
But this message came up after starting on moving folders across [** and not straight away, sometimes after moving  a folder  when  4 of 6 gb of files across  then the message comes up  = very frustrating]:
"The operation can’t be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items."
I am  dragging mixed sometimes large complex folders to this  os extended journalled external drive from my mac book pro OS 10.6.8  - it would take decades to move items one by one or even folder by folder and really confusing.
I have  dragged-copied  various small folders and files across successfully, but it is only working 50:50 and I can't leave machine with the idea of things copying eg: overnight - it just won't work....
I have been browsing google and find some people describing in CODE how they overcome this 'message'   .... but  I  [and I guess some other viewers of this in future & also in desperation]  would need  instructions for beginners....  to try this type of thing.  I don't know any code.
How can this be happening - I feel ANGRY at APPLE !!!!  for not posting easy fix instructions yet re; this, or better still  updating software so it doesn't happen [ that I can find at least  !!! ] .   There seem to be hundreds of people stuck with this stupid message and inability to back up their projects etc.
    Can anyone help ?
    Many thanks

    15 August 2011

    hi Samberl
thanks a lot for the fast reply.
I was dragging folders from main folders on the laptop-desktop  onto the external drive icon - to copy them across....
Your suggestion sounds very promising -  I didn't know about 'cloning'.
Yes the idea is to backup the laptop -    I thought I would just move it all now, new - and then keep saving/dragging physically   across to the new drive myself each day or two...
Would this be the sizeof the internal hard drive = c.500 gb  ?   =   under the HD icon on desktop is written  :
    " 499.76gb , 311.5 gb free  "
I can erase and start agin on the new external drive - so this plan is to make two partititions, rather than the one at present, and make one of them 500 gb ?
I have found CCC [carbon copy cloner] googling - looks good.
When CCC site says it backs up  the hard drive - would this  mean all my files  [over 100 gb] that are mostly  in folders on the desktop, plus the others in itunes, iphotos etc found in the HD icon,  would all copy across successfully [wherever they are in the computer ]  ?
thanks again, hope you can clarify these things and then I will go for it.
It would be great and amazing if this 'lack of permission' message doesn't show up in the process of doing this ccc transfer - hopeful!
    Julie

  • "Permission to access" error messages when coping folders

When I try to drag my Home directory to another drive to keep a backup copy, I get the no "Permission to access" error message on various programs. "Get Info" has the option of making me the owner but it is grayed out on any of those programs I can't copy. It's my computer and I have the only account and I'm the administrator. Why can't I get access to copy my files? I've followed other strings on this topic but none of them appear the exact same problem. I am trying drag my home directory to an external drive for back up. My new IMAC i7 has a bad internal 1T drive and I'm trying to get everything off it before the local Apple Store replaces the drive in a couple of days (when they get the replacement drive). I do use Time Machine but still want to make another copy of my Home drive. Any help on how to get around this problem would be appreciated.

If you wish to make a separate backup of your Home folder or even a bootable backup of your system drive, then do it properly - NO drag and drop. Use a backup utility that knows how to protect the file permissions assigned to everything you backup. See:

All of the above may be used to backup individual files, folders, or the entire drive. Backups may also be scheduled so you can backup regularly and automatically. Backup should be done to a partition on a backup drive that will be dedicated for the backup. Preferably a single hard drive.

  • Suddenly cannot connect to server "you do not have permission to access the server"

I am one of only two Macs in our office.
Up until now I have been able to connect to our shared folders/server just fine. Occasionally and randomly I would seem to get booted off, but would just log back in.
Now suddenly I get "Connection Failed You do not have permission to access this server".
I seem to get it whether its cifs, afp or smb.
After it denies the connection it also boots me from email. As soon as I cancel the attempt to connect the email recognizes my password again.
I have tried rebooting, repairing permissions and having our network admin change my password and nothing seems to work.
If I enter an incorrect pw it recognizes it as such. I only get the above message when I use the correct username and PW.
Additionally if I go to the other mac in our office I am able to connect using the same credentials without any problem.
    This is via ethernet.

i also got the same problem on my ipad i have tried every thing i dont knw hw to fix this problme any solution. ???????????????????????????????????????????????????

  • How can I get permission to access my own files?

I recently got a new Mac Pro, and I used a Time Machine backup to migrate my data.  Then I discovered that Time Machine doesn't actually back up everything; it leaves out all the "Build" folders in all of my Xcode projects for some reason.  I transferred all those folders manually, but I couldn't help but wonder what else Time Machine was omitting.  So I decided that before I permanently retire my old computer (a seven year old iMac), I'd make a full backup of all its data onto BD-Roms.  This it turning out to be quite difficult.
First I tried using Target Disk Mode and running Disk Utility on a second computer to create a disk image.  But after about 15 hours, it wasn't even a third of the way done, so I cancelled that.  Then I tried connecting an external drive to my old computer and just dragging all the files onto it, which seemed to be working at first, but then after a couple hours, it said something like, "You don't have permission to access the Keychain App," and it stopped transferring.  So I tried again, but I omitted the Applications folder, since that's where the Keychain app is.  Then, after a couple more hours, it said something like, "You don't have permission to access some other file."
Is there any way I can disable this permissions business?  I tried going to "get info" and giving everyone read and write privileges, but it didn't make any difference.  I wouldn't even mind just skipping the files with permission issues, but the problem is that whenever it gets to an "unpermitted" file, it just completely bails out of the whole transfer and then I have to start all over again.  Is there at least a way to make it just skip those files and go on with the transfer?

Not in your case. System-level folders cannot be backed up by drag-copying; just drag your home folder to the external drive.

  • The operation cant be completed because you dont have permission to access some of the items

First of all sorry if my gammar isnt the best, as I suffer for Dylexia and spell and gammar check isnt that good yet!
Has anyone ran into the same issue when copying files to a network share or removable drive where you have full access over and you get a good old error message
"operation cant be completed because you dont have permission to access some of the items" or and apple random number code that you need to good (so much for a good gui with having to google for the number codes!)
It really annoyes me as no matter what operating system you use it never outputs a reports to inform what "items" it has issues with and there locations so you can copy them manually.
its not too bad when its a few items but when it is 50 or so items in several folders you are copying and the os decedes it doesnt like you and makes up an poor error message such as the one above I really want to throw it out the window...
I have check for premissions on the destination and all are ok .
i have also check and none of the files are locked or read only.
I am sure I am not the only one who want the OS to explain what file and its location caused the issue.
Does anyone know the fix or uses tools that bypass the os annoying errors.
As the folder I have been trying to copy has only copied 348 of the 1591 files across.
    Thanks for the help!

    that1coolkid,
which Terminal “trick” have you already tried?

  • Folder permission reset and missing folders or files

This issue only occurs once per month on an estimate.
When we come in to office in the morning, we will discover our folders permission has been reset and some files are missing.
When we use the restore previous version, we can still find the files or folders in the last SECOND version. The last version will shows some files missing. Usually the last version is after office hours. Is there any possible cause to this issue for example
    DFS services, VSS services, etc?
We also found out, if there is a wrongly moved folder e.g c:\123 has been moved to c:\anotherfolder\123, the latest copy will also reflect the wrongly moved folder, e.g. c:\anotherfolder\123 instead of c:\123 (which is right)
This is just like as if the parent folder has been restored to a certain date by an unknown program.
    Thank you

    Hi,
Do you using a DFS share for that? If so, please refer to the article below to check if it helps:

You could configure auditing on the folder. Then you can go through the auditing log to check which process is doing on all these files.

  • Cannot access some folders from Bridge CS6

Only certain folders on my internal drive can't be accessed from Bridge.
I can access the folders from PS CS6 but from Bridge, files cannot be displayed.

Not sure where to look to ensure a folder is both read & write permission. Focusing on one of the folders which suddenly I can't access from Bridge - Pictures; if I use Finder all pics  are visible from the folder. If I open a file from the folder in Photoshop I can edit and save in the Pictures folder.
Select a folder in the finder and choose cmd + i or use menu File / show info. This provides a window and at the bottom it shows the permissions that are set. If you are the user and have administrator privileges (meaning you you have access with password to the account and are able to install and uninstall applications) it should sat for both system and administrator 'read and write'
Only from Bridge are certain folders inaccessable....in Bridge the folder has a red circle with white - and message 'no items to display'
This is getting a bit tricky. If you have jpeg or raw files in the picture folder that also show in the Finder Bridge should display them without problems. If you try to visualize a library form iPhoto or Aperture this will not be able in Bridge because those files are packages.

  • Permission to access files in Time machine

I am trying to restore photoshop files I created and seem to have erased by mistake. For some of the files Time Machine gives me the following message :
The opreation cannot be completed because you don't have permission to access " filename"
I created these files and they are important and I do not know what else to do to retrieve them.
I work with OS  10.6.8 on an Intel iMac.
    Thank you

Thank you baltwo and Pondini for your suggestions.
I tried the E10 but it did not work and turned out to be more complicated than the solution I had found
    while waiting.
Still trying to resolve it myself I found that all the instances where I received the « no permission » message involved folders. I then opened the folders, did a « select all » to select the individual files, thinking that maybe only one file was causing the problem and therefore trying to isolate it. I then did a « Restore » and it worked.  I had to choose a location but all the files were restored. All I had left to do was to put them back in a folder.
Not very sophisticated, I guess, but I have the end result I wanted and learned a new trick.
