Permissions actually repaired?
I've read several other threads concerning this topic. Pages and pages of the exact same permissions that are repaired each time the function is triggered, mostly involving Quicktime.
All updates installed and everything works well except for a few annoying quirks, like Safari not loading local news pages when other browsers will load them readily. Many mpeg clips won't play; massage states 'Quicktime requires additional software'. Same answers in every thread I viewed too.
Supposing I'm looking for more substantive answers.
1. Do not be concerned.
2. This is normal.
3. This is to be expected.
Sounds like something issued by the Ministry of Truth in a George Orwell book. My question: Are 'back doors' for use by government agencies being installed in our machines without our knowledge?
Still looking for an honest, competent 3rd party repair shop who will repair my Pismo. 20 months, 3 'Authorized Apple Repair' shops and at least $1000 later I still have an inoperable unit sitting on another desk here in my office. Last contact was "Make an appointment, bring it by and we'll show you how to turn it on".
I thought about humoring them but its too far to drive (100 miles). Thinking when my Macbook Pro can no longer be repaired at the Repair Depot or at an Apple Store then its toast. Sad and pathetic.

.... came up. I repaired, rebooted and re-verified. The same two entries came up again.Where are our Apple gurus?
I can't speak for any gurus, but where I've been is doing other things for the last couple of days because the Apple Discussions software/servers were so seriously messed up that attempting to do anything in AD was quite pointless, and led to having a very bad attitude due to frustration.
As to whether you actually have a problem: as long as everything works, and the real folders are where they are supposed to be, don't worry about it.

It the originals are in place, having extra copies rather than symbolic links doesn't matter. You just have an extra 25MBs of space taken up by duplicate folders.

Mac mini 2009 Mavericks won't boot. Chimes and power light comes on. USB ports have power. Blank display no logo,etc. Tried all keyboard boot functions, no help. Replaced RAM w/known good. No help. Removed HD and mounted in external enclosure and ran permissions and repair. No help. Upgraded HD to Yosemite and was able to boot another mini from HD mounted in external enclosure, reinstalled HD still no boot. Any ideas on how to proceed appreciated.

Permissions not repairing with Disk Utility
I booted off my internal backup drive to run Disk Utilities on my main drive as I've been having some display problems and wanted to check for viruses and check the integrity of my drive. No viruses, disc verifies OK, but I had a lot of permissions needing repair, which I did.
I then cleared history and ran Verify Permissions again and even though the repair said all permissions were repaired except the last SUID file, these 7 came back. I ran repair again. Disk Utility said all except SUID were repaired like before. Ran verify again and they same 7 plus SUID showed up needing the same repairs Disk Utility said it fixed twice before.
Is this indicative of a serious problem? Any ideas how to fix them? Do I even need to?

Disk Utility can't Verify Disk Permissions" and "Repair Disk Permissions"
I tried to run "Verify Disk Permissions" and "Repair Disk Permissions" on an external partition, but they all grayed out! "Verify Disk" and "Repair Disk" were fine! The "Owners Enabled" is "Yes". Why they were grayed out ?!

Consecutive running of repair produces same result - so, clearly NONE of the "repairs" have actually been "repaired!" Also, anyone know what the heck the LAST ENTRY means? I CERTAINLY HAVE NOT REPAIRED AN SUID FILE!!Apple says to ignore this. It is a known issue.

Why does "repair permissions" actually creates more repairs when again.
When I use Disk Utility repair permissions, I run it a second time and there were more instances than noted in the initial run. 13 the first time and 22 the second. To double check, I rebooted my MBP to make sure it wasn't an issue with a running program. The same thing happened, I got 13 instances the first time and when I hit it again, I got 22. I find it hard to believe that by running "repair", more instances are created.
Also, why are some things just not repaired?

SkipSpecifically, what "repair permissions" does is look at a bunch of files called "BOM files" or "Bill of Materials files", which is simply a list of what files where installed where and with what permissions. They are created by the Mac software package make that vendors use to build installation packages (if you've ever installed software that required you to run an installation program rather than just copy it to /Applications, that's what you have).
When you run "repair permissions", it compares the file's permissions with what's in the BOM. If they aren't the same, it changes the file's permissions to whatever the BOM says they originally were. The idea being that something might have altered the permissions on a file file making it impossible for you to access and thereby messing up anything that requires access to the file. In practice, that doesn't happen too often.
What does happen pretty often is that the software installer copies files and then changes permissions on them. Even the application may change permissions on the files. That's pretty common, and often necessary to the operation of a piece of software. So, despite doing a "repair permissions", some files and directories are going to simply defy having their permissions modified (particularly things like directories where log files are stored). -

I use disk utility once a week or so, to repair permissions on my operating system drive. Typically, it will run a healthy list of preferences that it needed to update and never does it list any in red. Today when I ran it, I pressed the "Clear History" button on the upper right, then ran the repair permissions again. Strangely enough, it went in an found all the same errors that it had claimed to find and repaired, the last time around. So my question then would be, did it in fact repair those permissions or not? I ask because logically, it would seem not…

10.4.6 - no permissions need repair?
alright, maybe this isn't a problem, per se, but it is odd. i've noticed on three computers so far, after updating to 10.4.6, repairing permissions finds nothing to repair! it used to always need to change some widgets permissions or dvd player or some other thing, every time. have they fixed something? or... is it missing something...?

Those messages were very upsetting to all those who felt that each message was an error, and there were ton's of things wrong, when in fact, nothing was wrong. Normally, they were just notations. Now everyone can relax !!! -
Repair Permissions keeps repairing the same files
Whenever I repair permissions, I notice the same files are being repaired all the time. Is their a problem and how can I fix this?

This is not a probelm.
The list of permission repairs is quite extensive under Tiger. This is due to the Repair Disk Permissions function forcing the specific permissions it reports, which is required due to the receipts of the affected files, most of which are Dashboard widgets. Most Dashboard widgets have specific permissions — ostensibly to avoid potential security problems with widgets — and Repair Disk Permissions will always set these to ensure they are enforced, whether or not they actually need repair.
Whenever the message in Repair Disk Permissions states "We are using special permissions..." this means the permissions are being enforced, not that the permissions on that file were necessarily incorrect.
Bottom line: you can ignore these "We are using special permissions...." messages. They will repeat whenever you run Repair Disk Permissions.

Hi,
Setting up my wife's new mac mini today. used setup assistant to transfer users and settings from my mbp running 10.4.11 which was updated and permissions repaired before doing anything. i did transfer everything, applications, users, files, etc. (maybe i shouldn't have done the apps) anyway, things seemed to go smoothly.

repaired permissions on mini before taking software updates--ok
took software updates, restarted--ok
repaired permissions again and there was a ton to fix.
did followup repair to see if all were caught. but they weren't.
repaired again. but now keep getting the same results over and over.
three are related to system/library/frameworks/java...
comes back saying those three are repaired.
also get five "Warning SUID file ....... has been modified and will not be repaired.

The short answer is the cause is differences in the permissions database the process compares to the item's actual metadata. Permissions can be "repaired" only in the sense that they can be reset to what is in the database when the two differ.
So for instance, if an OS or application update doesn't update the database as well as the item itself, you get a message telling you about that. It isn't an error in the item, just in the database, & the process is smart enough not to "fix" the item … which actually would be an error! -
I run Disk Utility>First Aid>Repair Disk Permission every couple of weeks. Until recently running this utility has cleared all repairs. Permissions repair completeI have exactly the same issue. I have 100 plus of those same errors showing up all involving iPhoto, iTunes & Front Row. No matter what I do, I cannot get rid of the errors. Doing an archive & install is a last resort for me. I have not yet tried the 10.5.6 combo reinstall yet either.
What I have done so far:
1.Soft boot repair permissions & restarting.
2.Regular boot or restart, repaired permissions and restarting.
3.Ran the install disc verify disk and repair permissions settings. Disk results are always green - no problems. The exact same errors show up on the disc when repairing permissions & remain there without disappearing
4.Ran Diskwarrior. All green. Graph 0% out of order.
5.Ran Techtool Deluxe. All clear.
I never get the permissions has been repaired. It's always, permissions repair completed. Well, what exactly did it complete? Sure isn't repairing.
I am going to give Apple Care a call. I paid for it, might as well get my monies worth!! Will post their solution here _*IF IT WORKS.*_

A few weeks ago I found that I couldn’t empty the Trash. I asked for help and was told to use Disk Utility to repair the Permissions Database. I did so. This solved the problem. I ran into this problem again and again and successfully applied the same remedy. I encountered the problem again today and applied the remedy. I wasn’t able to empty the Trash this time. I repeated the action again with the same results. I went on with this action about 10 times with the same results.
I decided to stop, wondering if I had accomplished anything. Would there be no end to it? I don’t understand the situation at all. Can someone please explain what is wrong and what to do about it.
My files are backed up and I am prepared to reinstall Leopard.

Permissions repair completeThanks for your reply. I reviewed an earlier post of mine on this topic. I was reminded of Option / Delete. I had forgotten it. I right-clicked on the Trash just now and found that it was empty, leaving me somewhat mystified. All’s well that ends well. I have downloaded Trashit in case the problem returns.
