Permissions and "apply to enclosed items"

Mac Pro 3.1
HD1: Systemdisk, OSX 10.7.5
HD2: Projectdisk
HD3: Studiodisk, OSX 10.6.8
Partition: Timemachinedisk
Partition: Backupdisk
HD4: Protoolsdisk, OSX 10.5.7
Partition: Lunadisk
I use Studiodisk and Protoolsdisk exclusively for audio work and they are set up just for that. I have disk images of them so I can quickly restore them if something should go wrong. I use Systemdisk for everything else. Keeping those two things separate is good for my workflow and reliability.
I had booted from Studiodisk. I wanted to give myself permission to write to that disk when booted from systemdisk. I don't remember exactly, but: I opened the "get info" on the studiodisk, changed the one that said "read only" to "read and write" and selected "apply to enclosed items". Entered my password and hit enter.
I know. This is probably THE most stupid thing you can do on a mac. And I immediately started to feel the consequences. (But at the time I thought: I'm planning to restore this disk from a disk image soon anyway so I'll just try it.)
The mac worked on the permissions for a couple of minutes. I let it finish, then I started to get error messages about system and library files that no longer could be used, and icons on the desktop started to disappear. After hitting enter on 15 to 20 of these error messages I forced a restart with the power button, held down the option key, and selected to boot from Systemdisk (Lion).
The apple and spinning wheel showed up, everything looked good until the point where the desktop would have been displayed. Instead I had only a grey screen and a (working) pointer.
Booting from Protoolsdisk (Leopard), same thing, only blue screen.
Booting from Studiodisk (SL), just apple logo and spinning wheel.
Booting from OSX install disk 10.5.4, everything works as expected, and I use Disk Utilities to restore Studiodisk from image on Lunadisk, and Protoolsdisk from image on Backupdisk. I restore Systemdisk from Time Machine backup on Timemachinedisk.
Now, when booting from Studiodisk or Protoolsdisk everything works as expected except: I cannot access any of the four disks without any OS installed. I never seen this before. The error message when I click on a disk in the finder side panel: (Translated from norwegian)  The folder can't be opened because you don't have the permission to show the content.
And, if I try to boot from Systemdisk I get a kernel panic right away. I tried to restore several times. Repaired permissions. Even repaired permissions before booting after restoring.
So, Studiodisk and Protoolsdisk working, probably because the data inside the disk images was untouched, Systemdisk not working because Timemachine files was altered in the permissions change. "Enclosed items", could they perhaps include aliases of the other disks and that's why all the disks were affected?
So my two questions:
1. How can I get access to the four non-OS disks again?
and
2. Is there any way of repairing the ownership and permissions on the Timemachine backup before I restore the data.
My Terminal experience is limited to copy/paste basically…
I guess I see myself booting from the OSX install disk, typing commands in Terminal that sets exact ownership and permissions to all files on a disk giving me access to them, then in Disk Utilities Repairing permissions to give the system files back their right permissions.
Any help…
Thank you.
Ben.

I solved my issues.
I'm sorry I can't tell you exactly what solved the thing with the non-OS disks, because I lost the link, but it was two simple sudo commands in Terminal. Something with tilde-R
The kernel panic on the restored lion disk was due to me booting from a leopard install disk when restoring. Using a Lion disk worked.

  • Apply to enclosed items Read & Write permissions on admin accnt not holding

    Hi,
I have been having nightmares with Mac Office saying database was not present and firefox giving me error 228.
After much to and froing i realised that my main admin user account had read and write permissions but they weren't applied to enclosed items (well not all of them). Once applied and without rebooting, everything worked fine again.
However, when rebooting same issues arose. When re applying permissions to enclosed items things work again just fine.
Any idea what is wrong? How can I make these permissions hold permanently or what sort of script or anything would make them not hold?

never use "apply to enclosed items" on ANY system created folders. that includes your home directory, your desktop folder, Applications folder etc. use it ONLY on folders you make yourself.
system created folders often have hidden ACLs and using "apply to enclosed items" will propagate those ACLs to everything inside, usually with highly unpleasant results. In particular, you home folder has hidden "everyone deny delete" ACLs. using "apply to enclosed items" on it will force you to authenticate any time you want to modify anything inside your home folder.
to fix permissions and acls on your home directory use this link
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1334?viewlocale=en_US
However, the ACL resetting utility mentioned in the link is buggy and changes the groups on anything it touches in your home directory to wheel (to which you don't even belong). therefore, after following the instructions in that link run the following terminal command (copy and paste please)
    chgrp -R `id -gn` ~

  • Why is "Apply to enclosed items" grayed out?

There is an archived thread on this issue but with no resolution. When I want to change permissions on the contents of a folder, very often the "Apply to enclosed items" button (in the Get Info Permissions panel) is grayed out.
Why? What's the fix? Is this a bug?

You'll only be able to apply permissions to children folders using the Finder's interface (via the Get Info or Inspector window) if you're the file's POSIX owner or if otherwise your Effective Permissions return this control (e.g. the ability to perform writesecurity and chown via an applicable ACL entry).
But, generally speaking, the POSIX owner is delegated as the user who can change permissions for a filesystem object. Any administrator who is authorized root privileges (can "su to root") can change permissions for any filesystem object. Workgroup Manager provides a simple interface for doing this, but you may want to familiarize yourself with the chmod and chown commands for greater flexibility.

  • Why Does Apple Tempt Us With "Apply to Enclosed Items?"

Unfortunately—like too many others—I find myself in a grand mess because I innocently selected "Apply to Enclosing Folders" while on the system hard drive.
I had been trying to resolve an issue where I was unable to write files to the drive. I selected the icon of the hard drive, went into Permissions and there it was—the solution (or so I thought) hanging there like a ripe peach on a tree within easy reach. I made sure my name and "Read & Write" was selected then checked the "Apply to Enclosed Items."
This has resulted in DISASTER and I have spent the past 24 hours trying (no success so far!!) to fix the mess.
Judging from the number of entries I've seen in this forum as I try to find a solution to my problem, I am shocked that Apple would provide this option in the Permissions area WITHOUT A WARNING of how seemingly innocent act may instead have unexpected, time-consuming and COSTLY results!!!
    What is UP with that???

  • Permissions - 'apply to closed items' doesn't work - help!

I took my wife's user folder off my MacBook Pro (and backed up) recently since I needed to clear some space. I then got a larger hard drive installed. I have now copied the user folder back onto this new hard drive. I am now having no end of permissions issue with that folder - can't open applications due to folders not being able to be modified, can't modify desktop etc. I tried to modify the permissions of the folder using 'get info' but it didn't modify enclosed items even though I selected that option.
I then created a new user for my wife and copied the contents of the old user folder across. Then tried to modify contents - again it wouldn't apply to enclosed items. I have also tried repairing permissions but it then seemed to apply me (even though I was logged in as my wife) as the owner of the folders! Huh. I'm a bit lost.
    Any ideas?

I would use Migration Assistant to move your user account from the old drive to the new drive.
From what I've read about trying to 'fix' the permissions when you try what you did, you won't.
Apply to enclosed items has always been flaky; however, applying to enclosed items is not what you want to do. While the folders have certain permissions, those shouldn't necessarily be applied to the contents. You are also propagating ACLs into the contents of the folders and that definitely is not correct.

  • ITunes music permissions and new user on Lion

Lately iTunes has been making me crazy.  I had to create a new user account on my iMac due to problems with my original admin account.  I tried to move my iTunes music library by changing where iTunes looks for the media in the original account and pointing it to the iTunes media folder in the new account.  I had keep iTunes music folder organized, did not check off Copy Music and said yes to the "Do you want iTunes to move your media to match the new settings blah blah blah."  It did indeed move most of the files to the new account.  Prior to that change I tried to change the persmissions on the music folder so that both accounts had full access then chose Apply to Enclosed Items.  In fact, what I really want is there to be no permissions restrictions on any of my files.  Now as I add my music files to the new User's iTiunes library, it no longer organizes the music like it did before.   I checked info on a random file and saw the permissions seemed crazy.  There were like sixentries, duplicates and one that said Custom.  I just want to no restrictions on this stuff.  Permissions are such a pain.  I am not at some company where only certain people can access certain stuff.  I want full access to everything regardless of which user I am in.  Please help me sort out this permissions stuff.  I have read extensively about them but obviously still don't fully get it.

I did that but now iTunes will not organize the files, presumably because they are set to the previous user.  It will add them, but not organize, which seems like it would mean the new user is only set to read only while the other can read & write.  I have tried changing permissions then choosing Apply to Enclosed Items but it does not always seem to change everything.

  • I screwed up my permissions and ACLs

    In a nutshell:
    1. Upgraded from Tiger to Leopard 10.5
    2. Did all subsequent upgrades to 10.5.2
    3. Problems began with folder access - for example, I couldn't install widgets in the main library widgets folder; I kept getting a message that the folder was write-protected. Also, auto-recovery in MS Word aborted, presumably because I don't have access to the folder where those files are stored.
    4. During my attempts to diagnose and cure the problem, I went to "Get Info" for my hard drive option and clicked on the dreaded "Apply to enclosed items". As everyone has warned, that was a bad move.
    5. Did an archive and install of 10.5. After reading these discussions, I also reset all ACLs to their orginal settings.
    6. None of this solved anything, so I did a second archive and install. That didn't help either. I still have the problems, and now when I repair permissions, I get the following messages:
ACL found but not expected on "private/tmp".
ACL found but not expected on ".vol".
ACL found but not expected on "Volumes".
ACL found but not expected on "cores".
ACL found but not expected on "Network".
ACL found but not expected on "private".
ACL found but not expected on ".".
Is there a solution short of doing an erase and install?
    Thanks in advance.

Actually, as I explore this a little more, I see that I may have misunderstood some of what was going on, and I may have been testing access incorrectly. It looks now as if things are working the way they should, but I'd appreciate your looking at the results and letting me know if that's what they should be.
I greatly appreciate your help. This whole Unix permissions thing is terra incognito to me, and that makes it a bit scary.

  • Permission: "Apply to encolsed items" takes more than 24 hours!

This is weird. I have a Time Machine back up with more than 650,000 items. For some strange reason the user "Apple", which I created once I went to a Genius Bar, is the only one with "read & write" access to all the back up and items. From that user I can do stuff, but from my user, I can't.
So, what I did was, I went to the Time Machine disk icon, then clicked in Get Info, added my user to the list of permissions, put my user as read & write, and clicked in "apply to enclosed items", so the permission populates to every single folder and item.
THIS WAS 29 HOURS AGO, and it's still working... what should I do? There's no way to see a progress bar or percentage, the Time Machine disk is just working FULL (light on and off constantly)
    thanks.

Don't access or modify Time Machine backups in the Finder. Stop the operation by force-quitting the Finder, then undo it by deleting the permission entry you added. Access your backups only through the Time Machine interface.

  • Severe Security Issue with Sharing Permissions and Windows

I recently discovered a severe Security issue with the windows sharing an permission settings:
I have two users, an admin user and a parental controlled user. On my mac mini, i have a external harddrive connected. On the harddrive, i have three folders, Itunes, Iphoto (Package) and a Temp Folder. I want to share the Harddrive RW for the admin, but only R for the parental user. But the Temp folder should be accessible for RW for the parental as well.
    1. I set the Drive checkbox "ignore ownership" off.
    2. I set the permissions of the drive to admin RW, parental R and Everyone to "no access"

    5. I apply to enclosed Items
    6. I go to "File Sharing" in the Preferences and activate SMB sharing for both users
    7. I delete all previous shares
    8. I add the Disk and use the proposed permissions which are admin RW, parental R, Everyone "no access"
    9. I add the Temp folder and use the proposed permissions which are admin RW, parental RW, Everyone "no access" - Funny, there is a new Group called "Temp" created which has custom access on both sharepoints
    10. I connect to the mac over a Windows machine (NTLM auth set appropriatly). Now I try to create a folder on the root of the Disk share, I get a denied message.
BUT WHEN I GO INTO A SUBFOLDER (eg. ITUNES or IPHOTO), WHICH HAS ALSO JUST "R" PERMISSION FOR THE PARENTAL USER, I AM ABLE TO RW, DELETE AND DO EVERYTHING!!!

  • Sharing, Permissions, and the Spinning Wheel of Death

Yesterday, I goofed when changing Sharing & Permissions on folders in another Profile's Home folder.  My account is an admin account.  I clicked "Apply to Enclosed Items..." and while I thought I had selected the correct Profile, I must have in fact selected "Users", so soon I began to get permissions errors in my Profile for iTunes, Mail, etc.
I could still log in to all accounts, but each got permission errors.
I was able to resolve the permissions issue for my Profile, but it persists for other Profiles.
When I open the "Info" editor and unlock the padlock, I get the Spinning Wheel of Death (SWOD) when I click the "+" to pull up the Users list.
It does not matter which Profile I am in.
    I am running OS X Mavericks v10.9.1 on a 27" iMac.
How can I deal with this problem so that I will get the Users list instead of the SWOD when i click the "+" so that i can  add my admin User account and give it Read & Write control?

  • Apply Permissions to Enclosed Items has hidden my files!!

I have been having issues sharing folders on my external hard drive, which is connected to my MacBook.  The folders have been added as shared through my system preferences menu, and the users and permissions don't seem to be a problem.  Alas, sharing these folders is still giving me trouble.
While trying to trouble-shoot this issue, I (apparently foolishly) right clicked on one of the folders (Movies) and selected 'Apply Permissions to Enclosed Items'.  Ever since doing this, all of the files within that folder are no longer viewable...every subfolder is now EMPTY.  I have confirmed that the files are still on the drive and haven't been deleted, but I can not access any of them from my MacBook which is a major problem.
How can I revert whatever settings/permissions I altered by clicking 'Apply Permissions to Enclosed Items'??
    Details:
    MacBook - OSX 10.7.2
SeaGate HDD formatted as NTFS, running on Mac via Paragon NTFS
Thanks so much for any help!!

    Why has it done this
Becuase you changed all the permissions denying you the ability to delete the files.
and how do I stop it?
    Boot into Recovery: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4718
Go to the Utilities menu and select Terminal
At the prompt, type resetpassword and hit return.
When the password reset uitility loads,
    Select your Hard Drive
    Select the affected User
Click the Reset home folder permissions and ACLs button.
Quit the utility and restart normally from the main menu in Recovery.

  • Granting permissions to enclosed items

I am running 10.4.7. I have a shared folder set up into which documents are frequently placed that I want others to be able to edit. However, it seems that every time I add a new document, I have to repeat the dialogue extending read-write privileges to enclosed items. Is there a way to have everything in the folder automatically readable-writable when it is put there, without having to tell the folder it is okay every single time I add something new?

    1) Move the contents of your shared folder elsewhere
    2) Enable Access Control Lists (ACLs) on your boot volume by opening Terminal and entering:
    sudo fsaclctl -p / -e
    3) Copy and paste this into a TextEdit window, replace UserName with the short user name of one of the users to be given access, and "path/to/your/shared/folder" with the path of your shared folder:
sudo chmod +a "UserName allow delete,chown,list,search,add_file,\
    addsubdirectory,delete_child,file_inherit,directoryinherit" \
    /path/to/your/shared/folder
Then paste the above into a terminal window.
    4) Repeat step 3, substituting another short user name
    5) command-drag the original contents of the shared folder back inside (command-dragging will copy them, simply moving them from another location won't cause the ACE to stick)
From this point forward, any files or folders that are created inside will be read+write to all the specified users. Note that moving a previously existing file into this folder from elsewhere on the same volume won't cause it to inherit the ACE setting; you must copy in previously existing files for it to work.

  • All files are locked, a new entry in permissions and more

Following instructions from here on how to try to correct another issue, I was repair permissions and to boot in safe mode. Since then all kinds of things are messed up.
I had to reset PRAM because the home and boot screens were were all stretched out of whack (this situation has occured once before shortly after getting this new machine)
EVERY SINGLE DATA FILE created prior to this safe mode is now LOCKED. EVERY ONE!!!!!!  If I try to save any file so far I have tested, I am told the file is locked and I do not have permissions. My user mode didn't have administrative control before, but I changed that because unlocking everything to use it was more complicated having to enter the username and password. New files created are also locked. However, a new Pages file I have tested shows locked but it will save to the same file with a CMD-S.
Having to unlock files to save work in them really slows work. Apple not allowing Save As on Apple apps is getting really tedious. I tried with a non-Apple app (PhotoShop) and its files are locked after creation. This means I have to unlock every stupid file before I can save it, then it relocks If I go into Get Info to unlock the file, as soon as i close that window, the file shows locked when I do a new Get Info. This is not a good user experience!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have hundreds of thousands of files used in publishing, graphics, photos, and music. I tried to save an existing Photoshop file back to the Desktop and was told I could not save because was locked - that I needed to unlock the file or enclosing folders. When Photoshop closes it says can't save Preferences because file is locked.
If I unlock the Sartup drive it relocks as soon as the Get Info window closes.
In Sharing and Permissions the user called Everyone has a custom settings and some files even have two Everyone entries. Newly created files have had the User with Read & Write and Staff and Everyone with Read Only. My user folder Get Info shows locked with the user, staff and everyone with Read & Write permmissions. If I unlock in Get Info it reverts to locked after I close the Info window.
Safari opens to the same page on this forum where another problem was discussed. I have reset selected items in Safari that I thought might have caused this, but no change.
Pages keeps opening a page that was thrown in the trash and is not even on the computer (at least doesn't show in the finder),
Numbers keeps opening a file that was opened and saved days ago.
iDVD will open the same project each time, even if something else has been worked on since.
I have cleared recent entries in these programs and the field keeps coming back when I open again.
I unchecked  the Restore windows when quitting option in General Sys Prefs and when I open it again it is checked. I know that Lion will reopen a page if I quit without closing the window first. Now, at least with Apple apps, the same file opens now whether it exists or not as well as the new file I am opening by clicking on it.
I have run permissions check in Disk Utility several times.
It seems that it is affecting Apple apps that remember where there were last and the visiting history.
Autosave on apps other than Apple can't save because the files are locked and I get error messages.
iPhoto files saved on a firewire drive are also show locked but testing on a duplicate file, I found I can edit with PhotoShop and it will save the changes.
With Finale, it has saved the files, even though locked. The odd thing is that in the finder it shows the correct creation and modifided dates, but it shows an old last opened date. Pages documents show all three with correct dates/times.
I suspect there is at least one if not more Pref plist files that needs to be fixed, but I have now idea where to start.

    HI,
Make sure you are logged in as the admin user.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon then click: Get Info
At the bottom of the Get Info window, click the gold padlock icon. You will be prompted for your admin password.
Under Privilege where you see: Read & Write "toggle" the arrows to set your permissions for system / admin etc.
    Close the Get Info window.

  • Task or script to monitor file ownership, permissions and change as needed

I'm using a Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.9) computer as a file server for a group of people who are (1) individually non-administrative users and (2) members of Groups. The hard drive is partitioned into 2 volumes: Vol1 has no non-admin access, Vol2 has a Shared folder containing folders with files intended for either Public or Private access. I'm admin with UID=501 and trying not to be a danger. Each other user has a unique UID. Each Group has a unique GID. The folder that all users have access to is named Pub_shares. Every user allowed to access Pub_shares is a member of PubGroup (GID=505).
Now when a user accesses a file nested in Pub_shares, that file usually becomes owned by that user and the group membership may change from PubGroup and may undergo a change to "Read only" or "No Access." Since all members of PubGroup should have Read & Write access to files in Pub_shares, this is a problem. All files in Pub_shares, regardless of who last touched them, should remain:
Owner = chris / Access Read & Write
Group = PubGroup / Access Read & Write
    Others = No Access
I've read some about Ownership & Permissions. I've seen it suggested that an admin set up an automated task, say to run every 3 minutes; that task checks file ownership and permissions and, if different, changes the values recursively to those shown above, such that:
    Owner = 501 / Access = rwx
    Group = 505 / Access = rwx
What do I need here? An Automator workflow? A shell script? AppleScript? Cron? launchd? How do I put this together? I don't know the syntax or the expressions to use. Any help is much much appreciated. [Note again: My "server" runs Tiger 10.4.9.] Thanks.

..."I have some Windows users (trying) to access shared files. Will the afp inheritance options stand up to a Windows user?"...
No the afp inherit settings won't apply to windows sharing, but I think there are equivalent settings that can be applied to smb.
..."I thought, too, I'd read somewhere that inheritance options use the topmost volume folder to set inheritance patterns."...
I am not able to double-check this for Tiger, but I don't think that is the case. As far as I know, with those settings enabled (and it doesn't work reliably if only one is enabled) permissions and ownership should be inherited from the folder that the items are added to.
..."My topmost folder on vol2 is "Shared" but it contains both Pub_shares (accessible by members of PubGroup) and a few Private_shares (folders accessible by members of various private groups)."...
Sorry I missed that point in your earlier post. The above would cause complications if a user were to move items from the private area to the public area. The inheritance only applies to when files are created, so something moved from the private area to the public area would retain its original permissions. To make it work, the public and private areas would have to be set up as separate shares, rather sharing the whole volume.

  • File permissions and Adobe Software

We have a problem with file permissions and adobe software. In Illustrator and Photoshop I can open files from the 10.4.7-server that are opened by another user at the same time and in Indesign, in the contrary, I cannot open any file on the server. Always error "no rights" or "is opened by another user", also if logged in as admin.
In MS Word for Mac we have no problem, if a file is open (Word) and I try to open the same file on another workstation, error "is open" is showed correctly. We have 3 10.4.7-Workstations and a 10.4.7-server on a G4/800. Can anyone help?

Assuming you're connecting via AFP, this may help:
    1. Start with current updates: Update your client and server software to version 10.4.8. Update Photoshop CS2 to 9.0.2, Illustrator CS2 to 12.0.1, and InDesign CS2 to 4.0.4.
    2. In Illustrator and Photoshop I can open files from the 10.4.7-server that are opened by another user at the same time.
This is actually not normal. Instruct your users to avoid opening files simultaneously, as this will result in lost data.
If you have SMB/CIFS access to the same share point, disable oplocks; allow only strict file locks.
If you've disabled the lock manager for AFP, re-enable it. It's enabled by default in /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleFileServer.plist.
    3. For InDesign documents that won't open, delete their corresponding lock files. Whenever InDesign CS or CS2 opens an .indd or .inx file, it creates a corresponding .idlk file that simply serves to flag the .indd/.inx file as open. If File.indd won't open, locate and delete File.idlk and try again. The lock file will be stored in the same folder as the document.
    4. Double-check your file permissions. Start by verifying the filesystems (Disk Utility/First Aid tab/Repair Volume button) of the server volume that houses the affected share point(s). You'll have to disable sharing to do so.
