Permissions and constant spinning ball after Upgrade

Hey Guys,
I upgraded to Snow Leopard last thursday and ever since I get the spinning ball when I try to execute more complex file operations.
e.g.
- Unpacking a large (1,8GB+) with stuffit -> spinning ball and freezes for more than 5 minutes
- Deleting a lot of files (2,4 million) -> complete freeze, woke up after 45 minutes
I checked with the permissions and it fixed 50+ broken permissions plus it is unable to fix two warnings: "the suid-file .. was changed and will not be fixed"
The diskcheck utility discovered no problem with the drive.
Further symptoms include:
Firefox makes the system freeze for minutes on end.
Mail crashes without warning.. system freeze ensues.
All these problems only came up after the upgrade to snow leopard.
I am thinking of doing a time machine rollback to leopard.
Any Ideas?

Hi All,
I am having this problem too! Whenever I try to launch any application, the rainbow ball will show up and keep spinning until 'no respond' from the application. Then I have to use Force Quit to quit the application.
I have tried to reinstall Snow Leopard but it does not help. Same problem persist.
Now, I have no other choice but to reinstall Leopard and see how it goes.
Really a waste of time! Even updated to 10.6.1 also did not rectify the problem.
Hope APPLE will do something about this ASAP.
Thanks
Regards,
chityc.

  • Is anyone else having iPhoto spinning ball after upgrading to the 27''

iPhoto has become really sluggish and clumsy in editing, transiting to the next photo viewing, even sizing the window. All this since changing from the 24 to the 27. No new app/internet/ add-ons. Deleted the iPhoto preferences. Using an ethernet cable rather than wireless (although it is enabled). And yes there is the flash choppy-slowdown and Safari intermittent sluggishness too. I migrated all my previous settings. Finally I know this isn't the iPhoto discussion but thought its inclusion here was justified relative to the new iMac. I'm really relying on the next 10.6 point upgrade as a resolution. Thanks. d

iPhoto seems OK, but iMovie seems very sluggish in my case...

  • How to stop the spinning  ball after trying to install 10.7.3?How

How to stop the spinning ball after trying to install V10.7.3?

Boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the Recovery desktop appears, reinstall the Mac OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac didn’t ship with Lion, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

  • And the spinning ball goes round and round...

Wow, all I'm doing is reviewing photos one by one in the library module using my arrow keys to move forward and back. All previews are previously built 1:1. I'm not doing anything in the develop module (enough of the slowness in this module has already been reported in these and many other forums.) I am trying to move through hundreds of images rapidly, marking picks, but I can only get so far before the spinning ball makes an appearance, giving me a signal to sit back and sip some coffee while I watch it spin for a minute or so. I even had LR crash - close unexpectedly - a couple of times. This was never an issue in LR1.
If someone has figured out how to optimize a Mac, step by step, for LR2 I'd love to hear about it because I get the feeling it's going to be a long time before Adobe addresses the many issues that so many are complaining about.
I'm using an iMac, Intel Core 2 Due, 2.16 GHz, 3GB ram. No other application is running.
No, it's not the hottest computer on the market but it ran LR1 just fine. Between this issue and the develop module issues, the frustrations are beginning to mount.
    Dan

I'm taking a little break because I'm getting tired of watching my spinning ball. I have just uploaded a 450 shot job, created 1:1 previews, and now going through my rating system. I'm in Library mode with 1:1 previews. I first click through the photos, one at a time, and flag the obvious bad shots for deletion. After that I go through the images, again one at a time, and rank any acceptable with 1-star, I filter on the 1-star and repeat the process with 2-stars. This continues until I narrow my selections down to 4-stars. The problem is that I keep getting my spinning ball. I am not doing anything in the develop module. I'm just going from photo to photo looking at images and applying star rankings.
The most frustrating is that at times I can pause on a photo to study it for maybe a minute. The computer is not doing anything, just sitting there while I examine the photo no zooming, no editing, nothing. I then click on the next image and bam, spinning ball. Haven't timed it but would guess close to a minute or more of spinning. Once it stops I can then proceed to click at a rapid pace, no problem for a while. I've tried counting the number of moves before the ball reappears but it's inconsistent. And yes, I've tried making just about ever optimization move I can find in this forum.
I don't think there is a solution until Adobe address the problem so I'm really just venting. What a pain. I really like LR, I just want it to work better. Please Adobe, no new features for now, just work on optimizing what we have. This is like a great car in badly need of a major tune up.

Do i need to reinstall programs and applications like FCP after upgrading to the new Lion OS?

I've installed Lion over Snow Leopard and all my non Apple software is still here - you may want to check if your software will work with Lion and I would definately recommend having a bootable backup in case anything goes wrong

The settings seems to be correct...As you were able to ping the ip 192.168.1.2,it should open the setup page..Try to disable the firewall,ant-virus and other security software if any and then,try...Also try to adjust the browser settings on the computer... Open an IE, click Tools >> Internet Options, then delete all files, cookies, history, forms...Goto "Connections", make sure Never Dial a Connection is checked, click on LAN Settings and make sure all the options are unchecked...Once you are done click on O.k...Close the IE and re-open it...Now try..
It should work now...If not then, you have to reset the router and need to reconfigure it again..

hii, on my iphone 4s, i tried upgrading my OS and i was asked if i needed back up and i said yes, after upgrading i couldnt find any of my files, document, pictures, music and all. please i need help please.

    Hi,
usually when you upgrade, it should not delete your files, but if it happens, than you should have a backup.
Unfortunately it is very common, that people don't know, what exactly is in the backup.
The question is, what files exactly you are missing? Own pictures, or taken with the device? Purchased music form the iTunes Store, or own? ....
Documents and files are mostly up to the developer of the app, if they are part of the backup, usually not and you need to transfer them before.
In the backup you will find just pictures from the Camera Rolle folder, everything else you should have on the PC, if you had it on the device.
Same then for music, you can transfer purchased music from the device, but your own works just one direction, from PC to device, from device to PC it doesn't work.
In future I recomand you to be sure how the backup works or use a 3rd party app (iExplorer) where you have a little bit more "freedome" than with iTunes.
Or you maybe just restored from the worng backup

  • Constant spinning beach balls after upgrading to Lion

I upgraded to Lion on a mid 2010 MacBook Pro.  Ever since I have been dealing with constant spinning beach balls every time I log in to anything, type, browse on both Firefox and Safari, or scroll up and down a page.  I have 8GB RAM, have reset the PRAM, restarted often, all is completely updated.  Anyone else have this problem and what to do about it?  It's extremely annoying and hard to get anything done!  Thanks, karen

This is the info received from another post.
    Reinstalling Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Several macbook issues:  date and time, constant spinning ball, super slow

I have a macbook w/ several problems. these problems started about 3 months after i got it and have continued to escalate, now becoming REAL problems.
    1. The date and time always "stalls". In order to display the correct date and time i have to click on it (top right), the date and time menu appears, and it naturally resets itself to the correct time. It is not a time zone issue. I think this might happen when it falls asleep, which brings me to problem 2.
    2. A lot of times when my computer falls asleep, it doesn't wake up when i open it or when i click the keypad to open. For a while this was such a normal thing that i had to take the battery out for a couple of seconds and then replace it in order for the computer to turn back on. Now, i can push the on/off key to sometimes "wake" it back up. This problem is consistent, yet it doesn't happen every time it goes to sleep. this problem happens maybe 5 times a day.
    3. my computer is SUPER SLOW. Not necessarily the internet, just overall performance. Typing emails (entourage) and regular mail. Using excel and word, iphoto, etc. Switching from one program to another causes the spinning ball to appear for longer than normal.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. And, i admit in advance, i am not very good at finding my way around the mac, so detailed instructions would be post appreciated! Thanks.

since you said that you are using excel and word then i'm going to guess that you also have windows on your system... your computer will not function to its full potential running another OS with only 512 of RAM.... you really need up upgrade to at least 1GB for a requirement or 2GB for a much better performance.

  • GarageBand 10.0.1 runs slow on OS 10.9.2 – spinning ball after most commands.

After a short amount of work on a project, I start to get the spinning beach ball after practically every command. Any suggestions as to why this is happening. I have sufficient RAM & hard drive space.

You list your specs as 4GB. It is debatable if that is "sufficient".
It all depends. If you have any other memory hogs like Safari or iPhoto running then your availalbe Memory will be gone in no time. I have the feeling that this situation (memory management) is getting worse with every app and every OSX upgrade.
Make sure you know if your system is "paging out". That means, at some point your system "outsoures" storage to your (slower) hard drive instead of keeping it in (faster) RAM. This might be ok for any other app but is the death nail fo any audio app.
CHeck your Activity Monitor app (or any other utility app like "Menu Meter") to know when you "crossed that line". At that moment it is a good idea to reastart your machine and reclaim the RAM memory.
    Hope that helps

  • MacBook Pro 13 and the Spinning Ball of Death. How to fix it?

I bought my macbook pro last year and after several months, (summer 2010) i faced an isight problem. I went to info-quest, where they fix computers here in Athens,Greece and charged me 458 euros. Fortunately, I had the warranty and paid nothing. Till then I was really satisfied with my mac. However, recently i faced another problem with it. Yesterday, my mac became so slow and i get the spinning ball of death. I can't do anything right now, for instance, if i want to shut it down, i have to wait for a long period of time til it shuts down and my mac becomes so unresponsive. To sum up, everything i do, scroll down, scroll up, click the x button, the spinning beachball of death reappears. I really hope there is a solution for this problem.

Any number of things may factor into the appearance of a spinning ball of death, but it basically comes down to an operation or command that is stalled.
First, your quick fix: when you experience a SBOD, click on an empty patch of screen so you can access the pulldown Apple menu. Scroll down to Force Quit; approve of the Force quit, and enter. The command or operation will be aborted, and you'll be able to use your MBP again.
Second, the next time it happens, take note of which application is stalled when you navigate to Force Quit. It will be noted in red, and show as inactive. Now, you know which application is causing you the problem. It may be that the application is faulty, or you have too many windows open at the same time, or there's a conflict of some sort.
Respond to this post so we can fix this once and for all!

  • Spinning Ball after wakeup from Sleep for a long time

If I wakeup my iMac after it has been a sleep overnight, the spinning ball appears does not stop. I am not able to click on anything with the mouse and the keyboard is not responsive. In other words, everything freezes up.
I have an external hard drive hooked up to the computer, if that is relevant.
Any suggestions on how to fix this?

I have 3 GBs of RAM. I typically have 3-4 apps running such as Safari, Firefox, and Word. This morning my computer woke up fine and there wasn't a spinning ball. I don't think I did anything yesterday that would have fixed the problem. Prior to this morning, I was having the spinning ball/freeze problem for the previous 4 days.
If the problem goes away, I'll post back to this forum.

  • Mail and the spinning ball

Since updating to 10.5.7 I keep getting the spinning ball on opening Mail. And also getting warning sign that syncserver is not connecting. tried trashing pref and repairing permissions but still getting the spinning ball. Anyone else getting the same problem?

I don't get the spinning ball, but I get the incoming mail symbol that spins and spins. I don't understand it as the settings are all the same on my computer and my husband's computer but he has had absoultely NO problems with his mail. My mail goes OUT and one or two pieces of mail come in, then it just spins and then my computer won't shut down unless I manually turn it off because mail has locked it up somehow. Other applications continue to work, but I can't do a force quit on mail...it just doesn't work. My husband put Thunderbird on my computer he was so frustrated with trying to fix the darn problem, but I hate Thunderbird!!! HELP
