Permissions, and freezing

I'm running OS X 10.5.8 on a MacBook (13-inch Mid 2009). I'm trying to repair permissions in Disk Utility, because:
-I just did a hard restart
-Lately, every so often when I plug in my second monitor, the computer freezes and stays that way until I do a hard restart.
About the permission repair messages:
This was first on the list, and it went away the first time I repaired:
Permissions differ on "private/var/log/secure.log", should be -rw------- , they are -rw-r----- .
Then there are about ten messages, which are on this list: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1448, and which never go away.
After that there are 9 messages which are not on that list, and they don't go away no matter how many times I click repair. They are:
Permissions differ on "System/Library/Frameworks/AppKit.framework/Versions/C/_CodeSignature/CodeResou rces", should be ?--------- , they are ---------- .
Permissions differ on "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DotMacSyncManager.framework/Versions/A/_CodeS ignature/CodeResources", should be ?--------- , they are ---------- .
Permissions differ on "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DotMacSyncManager.framework/Versions/A/Resour ces/DotMacSyncHelper.app/Contents/_CodeSignature/CodeResources", should be ?--------- , they are ---------- .
Permissions differ on "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DotMacSyncManager.framework/Versions/A/Resour ces/dotmacsyncui.app/Contents/_CodeSignature/CodeResources", should be ?--------- , they are ---------- .
Permissions differ on "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DotMacLegacy.framework/Versions/A/_CodeSignat ure/CodeResources", should be ?--------- , they are ---------- .

Permissions differ on "System/Library/SystemProfiler/SPDisplaysReporter.spreporter/Contents/_CodeSign ature/CodeResources", should be ?--------- , they are ---------- .
What do those last 9 messages mean, should I worry about them, and if so how do I repair them?
I also verified the disk and it's fine.
Thanks!

Ok, I reintalled the combo update twice without using disk utility in between.
Then I ran verify permissions. I don't see anything with a question mark, which I'm guessing is a good thing. But there are a lot of messages, including those I've pasted below. There are several more following those, most of which are on the safe list (link above).
Should I repair?

    and since then has been performing slow and freezing all the time. ai recently added another gig of RAM just to see if that was the problem , but it seems to be working just as slow. Does anybody know what it might be. Its a 1.6 GHZ power PC G5 and has a 80GB HD and have about 20 GB free so i dont think thats it. Please let me know if any of you have had this problem or know how to fix it thanks

    Except for the keyboard & mouse, disconnect all devices from your computer.
    Repair your disk from your System DVD.
    Repairing permissions from the Tiger or Leopard DVD
    Boot up from your Tiger or Leopard Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.
    Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
    Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
    If Disk First aid is able to complete the repair now click on the "Repair permissions" button.
    Once this process has been completed restart your computer.
    ===============
    Get a larger HD
    ===============
    Use Software Update to update your OS to OS 10.5.6.
    Afterwards, repair permissions & restart your computer.
    Your system info confirms you are still using an outdated version - OS 10.5.4.

    The message I receive is:

    They are: -rwxr-xr-x.
    This is a brand new computer.
    DiskUtility keeps running for hours and then just freezes the PC

    Although it’s immensely popular, repairing permissions is a waste of time unless you have a specific indication of a permission error involving system files, which is rare, or a startup failure. It is not a universal rite of healing for computers. It has traditionally spewed bogus warning messages that mean absolutely nothing.
    The built-in help for Disk Utility reads in part:
    If you see an alert or a message that says your permissions are set incorrectly, you can correct the disk’s permissions by clicking Repair Disk Permissions.
    It’s justifiable, though rarely necessary, to repair permissions after running a third-party software installer, as defective installers have been known to damage the permissions of system files.

    Diagnostics Information: ℹ️
      Dec 15, 2014, 09:48:45 AM Self test - passed

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
    Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
    There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
    You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
    In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
    You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
    Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
    ☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
    ☞ Paste into the window of another application.
    ☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
    ☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
    The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
    and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
    If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
    to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
    At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
    If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Constant rainbow wheel and freezing issues

    Hello everyone,
    I have done a lot of reading online about this issue, and I've called Apple a while back, but the issue has returned.
    Firstly, I'm on a MacBook Pro 13" from Mid 2010.  It's got 4GB of memory, and 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo processor.  I've still got over 200GB avaliable on the hard drive.  I'm also running Mountain Lion 10.8.2.
    Basically these are my main issues:
    Constant rainbow wheel occurs, probably once every few minutes or less of normal working
    Sometimes happens just randomly
    Sometimes occurs when I click a new application, new window, spotlight.. basically any clicks
    Lasts from a few seconds to much longer, but generally the computer doesn't fully lock up
    iTunes music will pause for periods of time, totally just cuts out.. then resumes after a random amount of time
    Videos will pause during playback for random amounts of time - both streaming video and downloaded content
    Overall slow response time no matter what I'm doing
    I have a memory monitor on, and this all occurs when there is still over at least 1.5GB of memory.  I've tried resetting the PRam (?) multiple times, and it used to seem to make my computer run more smoothly, but it no longer seems to rectify the issues.  I've also went into the Disk Utility and checked permissions and ran the disk repair and everything..
    I'm not sure what else to try, so any help would be MUCH appreciated.  I'm in university and this constant freezing is not condusive to my learning haha.  My computer even froze up once while typing this post!
    Thanks so much in advance.

  • Imac keep crashing and freezing up when I open browsers and program

    Hi, I have some problems for my Imac. I don't know why when I open my browsers and some program keep crashing and freezing up.

    Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
    When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
    Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • MacBook Pro running slow and freezing--Installed OnyX

    I am having problems with my MacBook Pro. For a while I was using Safari and getting the beachball A LOT. So, I switched to Chrome. For the past two days it has been running slow and freezing...when typing it would freeze and a few seconds later it would resume and the letters I typed would appear. After reading forums, I did the repair disk permissions. Nothing changed. I downloaded OnyX. After executing two tasks under cleaning..I believe System and User, it is already running better and hasn't froze once. My question is...which tasks should I perform on OnyX? I read somewhere that not all of them should be done. Like I said, I only did 2 and then stopped. I'm kind of over my head and don't want to screw anything up or do anything that doesn't need to be done. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Running Mail.app give spinning ball and freezes computer

    My wife and I have different accounts on an iMac (2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) running 10.7.4. Her Mail.app has recently stopped working. When she launches Mail.app, the computer freezes and she sees the spinning ball. On my side of the computer, the Mail.app is still working. Any suggestions on how I can get her Mail program running again?
    Thank you.

    Donald and others:
    This problem has been ongoing for about a week now. During that time, my wife has logged in and out of her account several times, and I’ve  rebooted the iMac several times. I've also run fsck, repaired disk permissions, and rebuilt the directory with Diskwarrior. But  Mail.app still isn't working.
    I don’t know how it’s done nowadays, but there used to be plist files that stored preferences for particular apps. Every now and then one of those files would become corrupted,  and when that happened, the performance of the app would be negatively affected. At times,the problem could be solved simply by deleted the right preference files. I bring up this subject because, at lease in some crude sense, Mail.app is behaving as if it had a corrupted plist file.
    Anyway, if someone would tell me what steps I should go through to attempt to solve this problem, I would appreciate it.
    Thank you.

  • MBP 13" Screen Flickers and Freezes After Upgrading HDD

    Hi There,
    I have seen on here and a few other forums that people are having issues with graphics cards or overheating that is making the MBP screen flicker and freeze.
    Mine has been fine until yesterday when I installed a new Seagte 1tb HDD. It works ok, but every now and then the screen starts to flicker, half of it goes black and the system freezes. Sometimes it's just for a few minutes, but sometimes I need to do a hard reset by holden the power button down for 5 seconds.
    Here are the details:
    MBP 5,5 13" (2008 I think - Can't remember)
    Boot ROM Version:
    MBP55.00AC.B03
      SMC Version (system):
    1.47f2
    Version 10.6.8
    2.26Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
    8gb 1067 Mhz DDR3 (Just upgraded, but before the hard drive and no issues)
    1TB Seagate Momentus SATA HDD
    As mentioned, I upgraded the RAM a week or so ago and it has been running fine. I put the new hard drive in last night and after a few hours, the flickering started.
    I cloned the hard drive using SuperDuper and it all started up fine.
    So far, I have verified and repaired permissions, checked SMART status and run a SMART Utility diagnostic. All comes back ok.
    I cleared the PRAM and installed smcfan control as another forum with similar issues said it was a overheating problem and running the fan control program should fix it. I did that at 8am this morning and it has run great all day. Come 5.30pm, the flickering started and then it froze.. GREAT!!!!
    It's so frustrating, I was really looking forward to having my MBP upgraded and running fast again.
    Any ideas or tips would be very welcome.
    Thanks in advance.

    set old HD. If problem will gone - you have weakened power supply or internal power converters. Yours new HD draw more power during spinup or something - so voltage on internal bus lowers and memory or videocard freaks.
    5.30 PM looks like a time when there begins a lot of load on city energy grid - so voltage in wall socket goes a bit unstable, it may also add to problem.
    if problem is gone when you are on battery power - its power supply. If it persists or get worse when on battery - its internal power convertors.

  • After installing Lion, my computer runs slow and freezes a lot...like a PC

    Arg!!!   After upgrading to Snow leopard and then Lion so that I could use i Cloud, my macbook is running slower than a 1998 Dell.  All my programs are freezing, it takes me minutes to change websites in my browser and I have to force quit EVERY program when I want to shut down.  WTH?!?  Help!

    I'm experiencing increased slowness as well, but I wouldnt say my MacBook Pro is "older." I'm running a MBP with the Sandy Bridge Intel Core i7 2.3 GHz, 4GB 1333 MHz DDR Ram, and a AMD Radeon HD 6750M video card with 1024 MB of dedicated video memory.
    I've tried fixing permissions and repairing the disk, but still the computer is a lot slower than when was running Snow Leopard.
    Are there any other options besides buying a only slightly faster, but newer computer?

  • Combo 10.7.4 Update slowing down and freezing applications

    After updating from Combo Mac OS X 10.7.3 to Combo Mac OS X 10.7.4, my third party applications slow to a crawl and freeze on a rotating basis.
    Affected applications:
    - BOINC with which I do volunteer medical research (3 CPUs used 100% of the time);
    - aMule 2.3.1 to download files;
    - Mozilla Firefox 12.0 to browse the internet.
    I tried to reduce the CPU usage of BOINC (3 CPUs used 80% of the time instead of 100%) to no avail.
    I re-installed with some difficulty Mac OS X 10.7.1 from the copy I bought on the Mac App Store to preserve the work I had done on my iMac since the last TimeMachine back-up, but did not improve performance, possibly because I ended up with a mixed system of Mac OS X 10.7.4 components surviving the Mac OS X 10.7.1 re-install.
    I am currently performing a TimeMachine re-install of my previous system (Combo Mac OS X 10.7.3) which will take almost a full day and erase my Macintosh HD to copy the TimeMachine content.
    When reading posts on AppleInsider.com and TonyMac x86 blog @ http://tonymacx86.blogspot.ca, I came up with at least 3 different explanations:
    - The Mac OS X 10.7.4 System takes up all the RAM memory and gives back unused, free memory only slowly, so that third party applications (and Apple applications such as the Finder and Force Quit) don't have enough free memory and freeze on an alternate basis, although my Core i5 quad-core iMac has 12 GB of installed RAM recognized by Mac OS X;
    - Apple has changed kext files in anticipation of the upcoming Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion and accidently changed the CPU multiplier so that the CPU is artificially limited to 1.6 GHz (instead of a quad-core 2.66 GHz);
    - Apple has changed the /Extra/org.chameleon.Boot.plist file and the following lines of the booting sequence:
    <key>GeneratePStates</key>
       <string>Yes</string>
    should be replaced by using TextEdit to copy the following lines:
    <key>DropSSDT</key>
       <string>Yes</string>
    For more info, see:
    http://www.tonymacx86.com/viewtopic.php?f=168&t=59889
    I'm just an average user with no programming skills. I don't feel comfortable with doing undocumented tweaks when I don't really understand what I am doing. On this one, I sure hope that Apple engineers are investigating the issue to come up with a fix.
    In the mean time, I am using TimeMachine to re-install my previous system (Combo Mac OS X 10.7.3) which will take almost a full day. I have been deprived of my iMac for 3 days and that's all the time that I can spend on a malfunctioning Combo Mac OS X 10.7.4 Update.
    quad-core Core i5-750 @ 2.66 GHz
    12 GB SO-DIMM RAM
    2 TB hard drive with 100 GB of free space

    Final report:
    I hope that my experience will help others who added their comments to this thread and anyone else who has problems updating Mac OS X.
    Here's the solution to my problems:
    1- I backed up the contents of my iMac using TimeMachine (before any attempt to install a major system update) so that I would always have a copy of my Mac running smoothly under Mac OS X 10.7.3;
    2- I used Geekbench to measure the performance of my iMac running Mac OS X 10.7.3 and achieved a score of 7622;
    3- Using Google and browsing through Apple Support Communities, I realized that Mac users weren't up in arms over the Mac OS X 10.7.4 Update, instead I was confronted with a number of users reporting various issues, none of which was similar to what my iMac experienced, meaning that my experience was unique, exceptional;
    4- Starting the iMac through a self-made Mac OS X 10.7.1 booting DVD (I didn't make a Mac OS X 10.7 Lion USB thumb drive), I used my TimeMachine backup to erase the contents of the iMac and replace it with the copy of the backed up iMac running Mac OS X 10.7.3 (before the Mac OS X 10.7.4 Update);
    5- Once everything was stable and running well, after repairing the Macintosh HD and then, repairing permissions with the Apple Disk Utility, I did what most Mac users do, i.e. use the Software Update command under the Apple menu to check if there were any available update for my iMac running Mac OS X 10.7.3;
    6- Software Update offered me a 729 MB Mac OS X 10.7.4 Update which is bigger than the 692 MB Mac OS X 10.7.4 (Client) Delta Update being offered on Apple Support Downloads;
    7- I downloaded and installed the 729 MB Mac OS X 10.7.4 Update offered through Software Update which, presumably, contained additional software which is specific to the iMac model and year that I use;
    8- After making a Safe Boot as described by Apple @ http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455, repairing the Macintosh HD and then, repairing permissions with the Apple Disk Utility, and giving the iMac 2 more days to defragment on its own the hard disk, I am pleased to report that my iMac achieved a higher score of 7663 on GeekBench, showing that everything is back to normal and that my iMac runs even better with the Mac OS X 10.7.4 Update.
    Hope this helps anyone reading this post. Good luck.
    Pierre

  • Troubleshooting 10.7.2 Intermittent System Stalls and Freezes

    Context
    Problem is occurring on a PowerMac 2.66 GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon running OS 10.7.2 with 6 GB RAM.
    4 Hard drives installed. Normal startup drive is a 600 GB Western Digital VelociRaptor 3.5" drive. Other drives are Western Digital Caviar Black and Caviar Green drives.
    No airport or bluetooth cards installed.
    Internet access through ethernet connection to Netgear Gigabit Wireless router.
    30 inch Cinema Display, wired mouse and keyboard.
    Problem Description
    For sometime I have been experiencing intermittent system stalls and freezes. None of my troubleshooting has identified the problem. Sometimes when I am doing something, the system will freeze for a few seconds. There is no spinning ball. I am able to move the cursor but it retains the shape it was for the document I was working in but I can neither shift to another application nor shift to another command with the application I am in. Sometimes this behavior will end and normal operation resume. Or it will continue into a system freeze. The system freezes are such that only a power down will work. Sometimes they occur when the computer is asleep and sometimes when I am actively using it. This morning I did receive a spinning ball but it disappeared but the stall continued until, after a minute, I treated it as a freeze since nothing worked except the ability to move the cursor around the screen.
    When I became aware of this behavior, it was after I had incrementally upgraded to OS 10.7.2. I later used the Mac OS 10.7.2 version 1.1 combo update. The problem continued.
    Troubleshooting
    I have been systematically reviewing the console log to identify messages that might identify problems. For example, I located and removed a couple of files in the Library/StartupItems, Library/LaunchAgents, and Library/LaunchDaemons folders that were associated with applications already removed. I have also dropped several apps from my automatic launch sequence.
    I have used several utilities to test RAM and other hardware and all tests have passed.
    I have switched drives to startup and while I did not stay on a drive using 10.6.8 long enough to experience a system freeze, I did experience a system stall lasting for several seconds. Therefore I do not think it is a drive problem.
    I have reduced to minimum the software being used and system has lots of free memory. Memory tests are good. (In Single User mode ran memtest for 2 runs.) Memory problem is unlikely.
    => Reviewing console messages, I find no correlation between the freezes and what is recorded in the logs.
    Any suggestions as to how to proceed at this point?

    The problem has been solved. In addition to the bad DIMMs, I had a defective video card and there were some software problems. The defective card was replaced and ran well for over 24 hours under intense computing tasks without problems using a Technican personailty. When I used it, I had problems right away. In consultation with Apple, I made the decision to erase (after cloning everything) and do a clean installation of Lion and all of my software. I have not completed installing everything but I have those tools I use on a daily basis now available.
    Some Lessons Learned
    If you are doing something like this, do not use Migration Assistant to speed up the process. It will bring in everything and you will not really have a clean install.
    It is easier if you make the Library on your new Lion drive visible and make the one on your old clone visible too. To avoid permission problems, you need to copy files into a Shared User folder and then copy them into the new destination folder.
    If you don't do it right and you find you have problems, check out this link on how to repair User Permissions in Mac OS Lion: http://osxdaily.com/2011/11/15/repair-user-permissions-in-mac-os-x-lion/

  • Various slow issues and freezes with snow leopard

    new to discussions.
    i have the current os x, and i am having trouble with my safari, mail, and dashboard performing very slow (not a consistent issue, but happens frequently) or freezing or shutting down. i read various discussions and tried the helpful tips, but i am not familiar with the ins and outs of a mac. i fear i might have done things wrong or worse that i have downloaded something that is frying my mac. (previously, i have download several applications that i didn't check out first, also realized for several months now that i didn't have my firewall on.)
    i tried the disk utility maintenance. i ran the "verify disk permissions", and the list that was compiled in the window is as follows,
    Verify permissions for "Macintosh HD"
    Permissions differ on "private/etc/postfix...ould be -rw-r--r--,they are -r--r--r--.
    Permissions differ on "usr/shar/derby", shouls be drwxr-xr-x, they are lrwxr-xr-x.
    Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreS...as been modified and will not be repaired.
    Permissions verifacation complete
    i have no idea what all that list of information means. nor do i know what to do about them. nor do i know if i am even doing what needs to be done to fix my issue. i feel like a blind person trying to read a road map.
    any help would be so appreciated!!!

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
    You can ignore those disk permissions messages:

    Regarding your performance problems, I'd use the Activity Monitor utility. Launch it, then set the list at the top to "All Processes". Click on the "CPU" column heading to put the highest CPU consumers at the top of the list. Leave the program running while you're using your Mac. If you encounter problems with performance, check the Activity Monitor window to see if there are particular processes consuming a lot of CPU time. If you see something possibly interesting but don't know how interpret it, post the details here and someone should be able to offer advice.

  • Why is my MBP Retina 15" continuously crashing and freezing within iPhoto as I flip through my photo albums ?

    Why is my MBP Retina 15" continuously crashing and freezing within iPhoto as I flip through my photo albums ?  This has occured all day now, with about 12 reboots and the problem presists.  Problem started while sharing photos with facebook and now occurs while fipping through all photo albums.  Have had additional problems with continuose freezing up and locking up in many other native and non-native applications, freezing all the time.  This reminds me of window based systems !

    Disconnect all peripherals from your computer.  Repair permissions and restart your computer.  If this works, one of your peripherals is the culprit. Otherwise, you should post in the iPhoto forum area in case your issue is software related rather than the Macbook Pro.

  • MacBook lagging and freezing

    I have a MacBook Pro (Late 2011). Processor 2.7 GHz intel Core i7, memory 4GB.
    I upgraded it with SSD and instead of CD-ROM I put my old Hard Drive. So now I have two hard drives. New SSD (samsung EVO) and old HDD. I installed OS x on new SSD and it's been running very smooth and fast.
    Once, I dropped my mac from the couch and there was a beeping noise like a siren. I turned off the computer, then turned it on and it was working fine. Everything worked fine for 3-4 days.
    Then, it started lagging. I constantly have a spinning wheel, macbook freezes, it is impossible to do anything even to write an email. Since I have two hard drives, I was able to boot my mac from the old hard drive and it wasn't lagging. Also, when I tried to access files from SSD it was freezing again. Therefore, I assumed that the problem is with the SSD. I tried reseting SMC , NVRAM, booting in safe mode, repairing hard drive, repairing permissions and stuff like that. NOTHING HELPS!! Also, the SMART status for SSD is Verified. Then I completely erased SSD and decided to reinstall OS x. I installed it, but even while installing I could tell it would be lagging, because it was so slow. And yes, after installation of OS x it lags, freezes and all I see is a spinning ball.
    Also, I have another macbook pro. So I was able to take my SSD out and connect to another macbook. When I connected it, it worker perfectly on another macbook. So the issue is not with the SSD. Moreover, I connected the SSD from that macbook to my computer, in order to see if something wrong with other parts(not SSD). When I started my computer with another SSD, it wasn’t lagging or freezing, but I can notice that it is slower then it used to be and sometimes you can see spinning balls. However, it was working better. Booting time was also reduced. Then I tried to swap RAM, it didn’t give me any result.
    Also, when I connect my SSD to my macbook it starts lagging and freezing again.
    So RAM is not an issue. To summarise, the SSD that I thought is a problem, might not be an only issue. Since it was working perfectly fine on another macbook. Even though another SSD worked fine on my laptop, I could still see that it slower and less productive (spinning wheel). So, the issue might be with something else. And I have no idea what is it might be.

    Third party 'cleaning' apps should be avoided.  They will not help and all to often with hurt performance.
    I have booted in safe boot and it seems to operate just fine there with no lagging.
    That is a sign that you have a third party application that is affecting your system.  Essentially you have to remove all of them and reinstall them individually until you identify the culprit.  Down load Etrecheck and post the result and we may be able to speed up the process if it shows a possible candidate:
