Permissions are all messed up in 10.9

I installed Mavericks 10.9 on my 2008 Mac Pro desktop a couple of months ago. Then the monitors (2 of them) developed odd patterns. Apple Care (AC) tried to help me start 10.9 in Safe Mode, but when the progress bar finished, the computer shut itself off. We could never start in Safe Mode. Then AC diagnosed a hardware problem and recommended an Apple repair shop near me. The the video card was bad and they replaced it. But when they got things running, the permissions were very screwed up. They spent a lot of time repairing them (I don't know how), and then they upgraded the MacHD from a 1.5T Seagate to a 2T Western Digital and cloned the old MacHD to the new 2T drive. I took the machine home and still had permission problems and other problems. Adobe Acrobat Pro would not print PDF files, which I fixed with a suggestion from the Apple Forum. Then Photoshop CS4 gave me a "License Expired" message (Error code 150:30). I fixed that from the Forum (Adobe Community > Downloading, Installing, Setting Up > Discussions: Error code 150:30), with a fix that required a little entry in Terminal ($ sudo sh install_fnp.sh). That allowed me to open Photoshop, but when I turned Photoshop off and restarted it I got the "License Expired" message again.
On the advice of Apple personnel in the Apple Store in Spokane, I unstalled Photoshop CS4 and reinstalled it from the CS4 Suite DVDs, installing just PS with all the supporting apps that the installation automatically chose. Then when I started PS, I got an error "Don't have adequate permission access" or something like that that has been addressed in the Forums. From the Forums, I followed the suggestion of adding "username(me)" to the permissions window of the Info panel of the MacHD and choosing "Apply to enclosed items". That got rid of the "Don't have adequate permission access" error, but I got back the "License Expired" error again and PS wouldn't open. When I tried the "sudo sh instyall_fnp.sh" fix again, I discovered that I couldn't log in to Terminal:
Last login: Thu Feb 20 18:27:35 on console
login(12166,0x7fff7cf59310) malloc: *** error for object 0x7fe65b500180: pointer being freed was not allocated
*** set a breakpoint in malloc_error_break to debug
[Process completed]
Meanwhile, using Disc Utility and "Verify Permissions" I see that my Permissions are still totally messed up. So I don't know what to do now.
I also have a Macbook Air. I see that in "Disk Utility > Verify Disk Permissions", the Permissions are also messed up on my Macbook Air, on which I installed 10.9 recently, but it seems to be working ok, so I have just left it alone.
I'm the Administrator and only User on this system. The Permissions remain a huge mystery to me. What is the difference between "Administrator", "System", and "Username(me)"? Should all these be present, with "Read & Write" access? And how do you fix such global Permissions problems?
Can anyone help?
Thanks.

You may need to rebuild permissions on your user account. To do this, boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and open Terminal from the Utilities menu. In Terminal, type:  ‘resetpassword’ (without the ’s), hit return, and select the admin user. You are not going to reset your password. Click on the icon for your Macs hard drive at the top. From the drop down below it select the user account which is having issues. At the bottom of the window, you'll see an area labeled Restore Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the reset button there. The process takes a few minutes. When complete, restart.

  • How do I fix my Hard Drive? The permissions are all messed up.

    Hi,
I have been trying for a little while now to do a time machine backup to a GoFlex Home external Hard Drive that I bought from Best Buy.  Time Machine fully completed the backup one time but then it started to tell me that it was unable to use that disk anymore and that it was going to start another backup to be secure.  Somehow in the process of trying to figure it out and finally mount the drive I deleted the full backup from the external hard drive and now my computer is acting up.  All of a sudden it was like my Hard Drive was only acting as the start-up disk version rather than my actual hard drive.  I don't know what to do, but I can't lose all of my files.  I have already had to restart my computer from safe mode 2 times in the last few weeks and the last time I thought it was a goner.  Should I attempt to repair the permissions while rebooting in safe mode or is there anything else I can do?

Under Utilities >> Disk Utilities, you can search the drive for permission errors and then repair then (the button below search).

  • IPhoto 11 events' dates are all messed up

Hi, my iPhoto 11 events' dates are all messed up.
I tried a solution that I found in the forum in which one should delete file com.apple.iPhoto but I don't have the said file.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

Yes you do. In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
You can then find and delete the necessary preference file.

  • Permissions are badly messed up on any disk Time Machine has used to backup

    *The Short Version:*
After using an external disk as a Time Machine target, disk permissions are forever and always utterly ignored which causes huge problems when said disk is supposed to share publicly and privately accessible files/folders over the local network.
Said disk is no longer used for Time Machine, but permissions still refuse to work after the "Ignore ownership..." option is disabled, ACL's are cleared, and more.
    *The Long Version:*
So, I'm trying to share some folders off of an external disk I temporarily used for a week as a Time Machine backup disk.
Because I have both "public", and private documents on the disk, I need to use disk permissions, to disallow access to some folders. Enabling file sharing works great, except any and every user get full read/write access to everything.
I have another external aswell, which is identical, just it's never been used as a Time Machine target volume, and permissions are obeyed perfectly.
Originally I think the Ignore ownership option was enabled, but the checkbox wasn't showing up on the Get Info panel. After some messing around, I realized it's not displayed if there's a folder called "Backups.backupdb" on the root of the disk.
Now, a few hours later, after renaming "Backups.backupdb" to "Backups.backupdb_OLD", clearing ACL permissions from the disk, unmounting, mounting, restarting file sharing, and lots more, IT STILL IGNORES ANY AND ALL PERMISSIONS?!
Is there some kinda super secret disk flag option or something I'm missing which causes OSX to still ignore permissions no matter what?
I hope someone here knows what's going on, 2 hours of Googling hasn't helped at all.

    UPDATE
I seem to have gotten file sharing to obey the permissions, to some degree. It included removing the share from system preferences, using TinkerTool System to change the permissions to anything (didn't seem to work via normal Finder, as I'd already tried that), and then adding the volume back in sharing preferences.
This doesn't really seem very reliable tho, so I'm hoping someone can come with a technical reason/solution for this.

  • Xorg graphics are all messed up and glitchy (screenshots) How to fix?

I've set up a new system, but the graphics are super glitchy!
Here's what gdm (gnome) looks like when i enter run level 5 with an existing xorg.conf file:
and here's what it looks like without xorg.conf so settings are automatic:
With the first setup (xorg.conf included) there's no way to log in.
Without xorg.conf, you can see the loging windows and log in, and when you get to the desktop, the background remains all messed up just like at the login screen.
Any ideas what might be wrong? i'll be right back to post my xorg.conf

  • Album cover are all messed up.

I own Thousands of CD's an have spent countless hours copying them over to my computers.. I buy an iPod and notice something strange my covers are a messed up a little, so I spend the time to fix them. I by an iPhone and once again the covers are screwed up. now today I notice they are all different. My iPod my iPad and my iPhone as well as my iMac and Windows PC's this has to be an issue with the iTunes software. What happened? how do I correct this without loosing all my time again. this has also affected my music that I have purchased from the iTunes store.

    Hello there,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Your iPod's artwork cache may have become corrupt. I would suggest clearing it out and rebuilding it. To do this:
    1. Plug the iPod in and when it appears in iTunes, click on its device name on the left pane of iTunes if necessary
    2. Under the Music tab, remove the check mark next to “include album artwork on this iPod.”
    3. Hit Apply to sync the updated changes.
    4. After it has finished syncing, place the check mark back next to “include album artwork on this iPod” option.
    5. Again, hit Apply to sync the updated changes.
    6. Lastly, properly eject your iPod, and verify that the album artwork is correct.
    Hope this helps.

  • The font i used in my KEYNOTE presentation is not available when you upload it to the cloud.  So, now my  text boxes are all messed up.  How can I select ALL font boxes of presentation and change (at least) the font style?

I have a large presentation that I need to access from the cloud THIS SATURDAY.  Now, after uploading from my iMac to Cloud, the font is all messed up because the font I selected on my mac is NOT available on the Keynote Cloud....so capitalization is wrong, inconsistent, etc.
Is there a quick way to select all text and change the style?  Help..I am running out of time!

In the mean time clear the cache and reload the page.

    JMMD,
Check the RAM and CPU Voltage and check the timings on your RAM.
I would then load the latest nVidia nForce & ForceWare Drivers

I'll check all the settings again but they looked fine when I glanced at them. I basically always left everything at default.
Would I need to reload them (Nforce and Forceware) if they're already installed? If so, I'll give that a shot.

Did you take note of all your setting before flashing?
Did you make sure all the settings were correct after the flash?
Did you try a complete CMOS clear and set all the settings back again?
I never really changed any of the settings. I'll check them again but they were basically all defaults or auto.

  • Email fonts coming from PC's  are all messed up!!!

To my knowledge I have not changed any settings but for some reason the headings on email and the forwarded info (not the content) seem to be all messed up. When I was entering an encrypted word for an apple change I couldn't read what I was typing and it was rejected so I guess they couldn't read it either. It doesn't impact the day to day mail but I would like to know what this is and how to fix it! More specific-the text is small, dark and all mashed together. Impossible to decipher. Thanks to everyone
