Permissions Change on startup normal or wrong?

Hello MacPeople...
I've had a battle with Tiger after I loaded it a few months ago. To make this short, I ultimately found ONE bad block with TT 4.5.2., erased, zeroed the internal drive, cloned back from my FW. Now all seems hunky-dorey....
Here's the problem(?) -- EVERY time I reboot the machine, permissions are changed on three items -- from group (80, me) to 0 root, definitely not me.
Items: last file in resources folders of Activity Monitor, Keychain Access, and ODBC Aministrator.app in Utilities. This does not seem like correct behavior to me.... Any thoughts on the matter. Thanks, Mark

You are probably running a version of Retrospect that is not compatible with Tiger. Tiger's startupItems folder requires permissions that are different from previous OS versions. Make sure you have the latest version of Retrospect Client, which I think is 6.1.126, but might be later. I'm running 6.1.107 and it works.

• Disc Utility always set wrong permissions of the startup disc

The permissions of the startup disc should be "drwxrwxr-t 39 root admin", right?
But everytime I repair my permissions with disc utility I get the (german) message:
Benutzer unterscheidet sich für ., Soll-Wert: 501, Ist-Wert: 0
Die Gruppe unterscheidet sich für ., Soll-Wert: 501, Ist-Wert: 80.
Die Zugriffsrechte unterscheiden sich für ., Soll-Wert: drwxr-xr-x , Ist-Wert: drwxrwxr-t .
And the permissions of the startup disc are set to:
drwxr-xr-x 39 Nomis101 Nomis101
(I've read that out with "$ ls -ld /")
Than I "repair" the permissions with "$ chmod 1775 /". And next time I use disc utility I have the same again.
I've repaired the permissions in single user mode, I've booted from the install DVD and reseted my ACLs, I've removed my ACLs. But nothing seems to help.
Sometimes I also have the issue that I cannot move any file on my desktop anymore or that I have suddenly no write permissions in the folder /Volumes/Macintosh HD
I suspect MacPorts 1.7 or Mercurial as the malefactor, because the issues accumulate after I've done something with MacPorts (or Mercurial). But I'am not sure with that.

{quote:title=V.K. wrote in another thread...:}If I'm not mistaken you told me once a while ago how to modify permissions database which seems to be required there.{quote}
Hmm, that's actually a bit of a tough one - Sorry, but I think it's beyond me.
My understanding of the permissions database consists of only what I have been able to piece together from tinkering, and while I have been able to edit individual entries and have "repair permissions" behave as expected with the edits, "/" is a bit different.
Basically, every time something is installed that results in an update to the permissions database, entries are added, i.e. the entry for a file isn't edited but rather a whole new entry is added. That applies to a given file in the update, as well as every folder on the path to that file. Since installations are pretty much all rooted in "/", that means a new entry for "/" is created every time any installer updates the receipt database, and other things may add entries as well -- I have 88 entries for "/" in there on my system. This does't display all of the entries, but a slightly more user-friendly way is to view most of them is to use:

pkgutil --file-info /

I haven't dug that deeply, but I don't know what determines which entry will be used during the actual permissions verification / repair operation (it's been a while but I seem to recall that it wasn't as simple a matter as "most recent", for example), so figuring out which one to edit might be a challenge.
And there are cases like "/" where there are entries in the database, but as you pointed out, that seem to be ignored when repairing of verifying permissions, and I have no idea what flags the system to ignore those.
Interestingly, of the 88 entries on my system, 83 call for "1775" permissions, but 5 of them (mostly "Safari" updates but also the "BaseSystem" package) actually say the permissions should be "1755"...
I think for the OP, the bigger issue is trying to figure out (and stopping) whatever it is that keeps wrecking security by changing the ownership to the user...

Hi Support team, somehow my mozilla settings have been changed and it became transparent, now how to change back to normal because everything is transparent, menus, pages etc.

This could be the same problem other users are reporting as a white screen or black screen, caused by an incompatibility between Firefox 33 and some older graphics card/chipset drivers.
Please disable hardware acceleration as a temporary workaround. Step-by-step directions in this thread: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1025438
Does that work?

• How do I change my startup settings?

When I turn my computer on, about a dozen programs start up automatically -- which means I have to spend at least a minute closing or minimizing each one. How do I change my startup settings so that the programs only open manually, when I need them?
Thanks!

First go into Users and Groups, under your account, and see what login items you have. Remove any that might be causing the problem.
Second, when you reboot or shut down, make sure that you don't have reopen windows checked - this is likley what's causing your problem.
Third, check the applications that are opening via the Dock and make sure that you don't have Open at Login selected.
Any one of these could cause applications to start when you reboot or start up.

• Disk permissions changed after switching off FileVault

Hi,
I found my disk permissions changed after switching off FileVault, nearly everything belongs to "system" now.
Can anyone PLEASE tell me what permissions are standard for
-Desktop
-Applications
-System
-Libary
ore doesn't it matter anyway ????
Thanks a lot...

Assuming you're just talking about the Owner being System then:
The owner of Desktop should be your user name.
Applications and System should be System. Since these are not in your Home folder these permissions would have been corrected when you ran Repair Disk Permissions.
The Library folder depends on which Library folder you are talking about. If it's the Library folder that's in the same folder as System and Applications, then the Owner should be System, as well. Again, if that is not in your Home folder, then the permissions repair would have corrected it.
If, however, it's the Library that's in your Home folder, then it should have your username as the Owner.
Filevault only affects things that are in your Home folder so turning it on/off doesn't affect permissions anywhere else.

• I just purchased the SX60 and have been trying to find the way to change the "startup image".

I just purchased the SX60 and have been trying to find the way to change the "startup image". I have the SX40, Sx30 SX1 and all allow me to change the startup image and the sounds through MyCamera. When I opened MyCamera, it tells me that it won't work on my model. Does anyone know how to change the startup image? In the menu it gives me the choice to either have it on or off. Thanks so much!

Looks like Canon has changed what they ship with the newer cameras. My SX50 came with a disc & no paper manual. Because of that I searched the Canon site (USA site) & found the program set you need to download (according to what it says). Now there are different versions based on your operating system so for my search I've chosen Win 8.0 & the program file recommended is
File Description Date Size
Digital Camera Software 4.3 [Windows]
09/16/14
22.26 MB
File Name: dcsw-4-3-0-2-9l.zi

I have a windows 7 dvd in the drive and the mac is set to launch from the dvd drive. How do I change the startup disk?

Hold the option key at startup and when you get to the boot panel select your Mac OS drive.

• You can't change the startup disk to the selected disk?

System Preferences: Startup Disk: Bootcamp (Windows 7 64): "You can't change the startup disk to the selected disk. The bless tool unable to set bootcamp disk"

I got the same problem, only with Win 7, but after a day's search on the net I found a solution. Something very simple and easy to use.
Open up Terminal and run the following command, where DISK NAME is the name of the disk you want to boot in. PS. use the quotes (") if you disk's name is longer than 2 words.
sudo bless -mount /Volumes/"DISK NAME" -setBoot
THIS WORKED FOR ME!!
