Permissions Changed After File Transfer

Yesterday, I received a new 21.5" iMac. I transferred my files and settings from an older MacBook PRO (Core 2 Duo). Now, most of my programs don't recognize me a the same (?) user, and say that there is a problem with my "permissions" (like when Lightroom is looking for its' catalog file).
What happened during the transfer process that took away my permissions. By the way, my User Name / Password has not changed, in fact, as far as I can tell - nothing else changed either.

this is quite wrong way to do it and should not be necessary. something went wrong during the migration. you would be much better off fixing it for real rather than changing permissions file by file which might only serve to obfuscate the problem. the easiest would be to do a wipe and install and rerun migration during original setup.
I suggest you do just that. boot from install disk 1 that came with the new mac, erase the hard drive using disk utility, quit disk utility and proceed with the install. on the reboot you'll get setup assistant. it will offer to migrate your data from another mac. say yes. see if the permissions problems go away after that. they should.

  • Disk permissions changed after switching off FileVault

    Hi,
I found my disk permissions changed after switching off FileVault, nearly everything belongs to "system" now.
Can anyone PLEASE tell me what permissions are standard for
    -Desktop
    -Applications
    -System
    -Libary
ore doesn't it matter anyway ????
    Thanks a lot...

Assuming you're just talking about the Owner being System then:
The owner of Desktop should be your user name.
Applications and System should be System. Since these are not in your Home folder these permissions would have been corrected when you ran Repair Disk Permissions.
The Library folder depends on which Library folder you are talking about. If it's the Library folder that's in the same folder as System and Applications, then the Owner should be System, as well. Again, if that is not in your Home folder, then the permissions repair would have corrected it.
If, however, it's the Library that's in your Home folder, then it should have your username as the Owner.
Filevault only affects things that are in your Home folder so turning it on/off doesn't affect permissions anywhere else.

  • Photo image size after file transfer much smaller

I am transfering photos over to my wife's Macbook and after the transfer, the photos are of a much smaller file size. Is there a way to transfer the photos at their full image size?

Dragging and dropping to a web-based email (gmail) makes the photo appear inside the message itself, and not as an attachment, which is what I wanted.

  • Adobe PCD folder permissions change after launching CS5 programs

There is a folder apparently important for Creative Suite
    5 licensing: C:\program files (x86)\common files\adobe\adobe pcd
Unfortunately the default permissions after installing (either standard install or install from Adobe Enterprise Deployment tools) are:
    Everyone: Read
    Administrators: Full Control
This presents a problem for using the software if your users are not local administrators.
If you change the folder permissions to grant access to other users, than launch InDesign and/or Photoshop, the Adobe PCD permissions revert to their original settings.  I have verified that my permissions save fine by closing and reopening the folder permissions.  It's only after a CS5 program is launched that the permissions revert.
How can I get the permissions to stay?  Until then I have to make people local admins, which is not good if they find out.  They will install all kinds of crapware and crappy legit software and break their computers further.

    Hello Stu,
We are running Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit.  I don't think running this particular operating system is unique.
The only other idea I have at the moment, besides having everyone be a local administrator, is to write a script that updates the folder permissions.  The tricky part is figuring out how often the script should run. I'm guessing that the script should run daily but I'm not sure that is frequent enough.  I suppose if the script ran hourly that wouldn't hurt anything.

  • IMac wont boot after file transfer from Windows laptop

    Hi folks,
I am looking for some advice if anyone can help?
Sunday evening I transferred asome data off an old knackered Windows laptop via my home network. During the transfer, my 2013 iMac 27" started to really slow down and became unresponsive (i tried to cancel the data transfer and restart). In the end I have to force shut down by holding the power button in. Now, upon reboot of the machine, it won't get passed half way of the progress bar - and I've left it an hour at the most and given up.
I have attempted a verify and repair in Disk Utility, and even though I have managed to Verify Disk and Repair Disk, they took an absolute age to get through - I was chatting to an Apple Customer Care person, and they told me to chat back once it was done, which was probably 20-30mins after I started.
I then went on to Verify Disk Permission, which I left running for around 2 hours until it finished, and then moved onto Repair Disk Permissions, of which I cancelled after about 4 hours worth of it doing not a lot!
When I try and boot, it gets to a stage where the hdd is making a repetitive noise, as if it is stuck in a loop somehow.
I am running Yosemite 10.10.1, and have reset the PRAM to no avail.
I am fearing the worst tbh, but my main concern is the data on the drive - any tips on how to attempt to recover that data - or to fix the drive itself?
    Thanks
    Andy

The correct way to restart in Safe Mode is when you hear the "Bong" sound hold down and continue to hold down the Shift key until a progress bar appears. Here are Apple's instructions on how to correctly restart in Safe Mode.
I would recommend that you also look over Gray screen appears during startup.

  • Security Permissions for simple file transfer

    Hey All
I'm transferring a file using RMI as part of an enhancement. I want to restrict where the file can be transferred to and thus will use a security manager (On the destination object). However the object its being transferred to shares the same JVM with another quite complex application that currently doesn't need a security manager.
Will I need to set a whole host of permissions for this application even though I only want to restrict file writing?
I suspect this is the case just want confirmation.

    Hi,
In the code which receives the file being transferred, you might try calling System.setSecurityManager(new SecurityManager()). Use the configured Java policy to limit where the file can be written. After calling setSecurityManager(), save the file. Before returning to the rest of the application, call System.setSecurityManager(null). Ensure that your code has setSecurityManager permission or this call will fail. If this idea doesn't work, you could simply use a security manager for the whole application, and just grant AllPermission to everything except the file receiving code. Everyone says AllPermission is dangerous, but it's no more dangerous than running with no security manager at all :)

  • Disk Permissions changed after connecting mac via firewire on Target Disk Mode.

I have connected 2 macbook pros using firewire in target disk mode and the permissions on the destination macbook pro have changed. Now when I try to start the macbook pro, it stays on the grey screen and the apple sign changes to a prohibitory sign, therefore I cant log in.
    Please help!
    Thanks

I am unable to perform a safe boot, it simply wont happen.
I tried to start from mac osx install disk and that works so I am able to go disk utility, I can run 'verify disk' and 'repair disk' and it shows that everything is ok, however, I cant 'verify disk permissions' or 'repair disk permissions' as both are greyed out because 'the selected disk is not mounted'. I try mounting but that wont work either, I am told to 'disk can not be mounted, run first aid first and then retry'.
Furthermore, I try to perform 'archive and install' so I follow these instructions:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
But on number 7, intead of being able to choose volume to install to, there is nothing I can choose! There is no list. And of course I cant continue.
    Any help is appreciated!

  • Excel file will not open on new air book after file transfer

i transfered through airdrop and email both an excel file which it auto zips and it won't open on my air book in numbers it keeps replicating the zip. Any ideas

    Sheri,
Please be more verbose in your explanation of the problem and the steps you are going though.  Please replace "it" with the actual thing to which "it" refers.  I think "it" changes from one point in your sentence to the next.
To send and excel file via email you should be able to attach it, then send.  To open on your mac you can drag the excel file onto the Numbers icon (in the dock).

  • Startup disc full after file transfer from old mac

    Hi everyone,
I had a Macbook pro that was about 6 years old until I bought a new Macbook Air. I tried to transfer my files via the migration assistant but it didn't work, so I backed everything up onto an external hard drive and then transferred everything via that onto my new macbook air. All the files saved onto my desktop in a file called "Olivia's MacBook Pro", but none of the files are directly linked to my new air (i.e., I can access my old pictures through my desktop but they aren't in my new iPhoto). The issue I'm having is that I often get a popup that says my startup disc is full. I followed directions on old threads that said to download omnidiscsweeper, which I did, and all the room is being taken up by that folder of all my old stuff on my desktop (~185 GB).
My question is- do I just have too much stuff? Is there a way to keep my pictures and such on my new computer without always getting this error message and having to shut down different applications? Please help! I am not very computer savvy
    Thanks so much for reading.
PS- appx 76 GB of my computer storage is movies...but I don't have any movies saved on here that I know of... another 72 GB is "Other".
    Thanks!!

Frankly, You'll probably waste more time and effort than if you just got a Firewire cable. I'm pretty sure you'll need to have a cross connect Ethernet Cable (I usually make my own, not sure where you'd buy one) to connect them via ethernet, and even then you still have to mess around with getting them to talk to each other. Other option is to plug both computers into a hub or switch, or better yet a router.
Another option is to spend $20 on a usb adapter that can connect any drive to your Mac. [Here is one that I have|http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo =2329300&CatId=3770] from Tiger Direct that works quite well.

After transport into production the occurance of the target structure in mapping has changed to 1..unbounded(instead of 1..1) automatically.
I wonder how it happened.I have even cross checked the transport id of quality object and production object which is exacly the same.
Please help with the possible reason!!!

    Hi
Seems to version conflict , are u able to see extra tab "Conflict"
u can see list of Objects which have a version conflict.
Actual habit is transporting from QA --> PROD
but was it followed , i think there might be a change made in Prod envi , before transporting to Prod from QA.

  • Crash immediately after file transfer utility - MB now a brick

I just finished a 2 hour transfer of data from an old MacBook to the new MacBook and it crashed just as there was less than a minute to go. The screen went haywire, then nothing but a beeping chunk of aluminum brick.
Any solutions to this problem short of returning it?

    Details might help people here.
How did you do the transfer?
What was happening just prior to crash?
Can you try another hard drive in the MacBook?
Did you just clone the older MacBook's OS X installation? (If so, it won't work. The new ones have different drivers and won't boot up with the old MacBook's OS X build.)
    Good luck.

  • 400GB Raid partition disappear -after file transfer from USB2 HD

Hallo, I have now been using my system prodly for two months, or so.   But under a filetransfer from my removable USB 2.0 HD, a disaster happened   An error message that said; Faulty writing. And my 400GB was gone from Windows
I have checked the raid drivers, and reinstalled them, and I can see at start up that the raid array is functional. With Seagate tool I can see that there is a partition of 400GB. What has appened

How to make Windows see the raid array partiton agin
    I use still winXP SP2

Sorry for the late feedback, think I had to repress it for a while, the los of 200Gb

  • Changing multiple file permissions - Applications folder

After using migration assistant in Snow Leopard and then changing the username of my primary user, all third party apps in my Applications folder require me to enter the admin password when moving, updating with Sparkle, etc. They don't seem to have a primary owner.
I saw the steps outlined here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1778969 for changing permissions on multiple files but I'm wary of doing this on the Applications folder.
Does anyone have any advice on how to fix this? I went through files individually and i'm still getting messed up permissions all over the place. Thanks!

DO NOT use "apply to enclosed items" on the main Applications folder! Do not use it on any system created folders. they often have hidden ACLs and using this button would propagate the ACLs to everything inside. this is the case for the main Applications folder. there is no easy way to do what you want because Apple changed the permissions structure in Snow leopard and the default applications no longer have read+write access by admin users by default. I would suggest you don't mess with permissions on Applications. if you ever need to update a 3rd party application simply delete the existing copy in /Applications and put the new one in. it will have correct permissions.

  • Audit when file/folder permissions change?

    Hello,
We have an old Windows 2003 std server and someone keeps changing the permissions on a single file that is very important, can I audit who does this?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Firstly, please enable audit object access policy under Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Audit Policy in Local Group Policy Editor (if it is in a domain, please check it under the default domain
policy in Group Policy Manager) to a Security setting of Success.
Then you need to enable auditing on that file. Please open the file's properties dialog box, select the Security tab, click Advanced, and select the Auditing tab of the Advanced Security Settings window. In your case, you can check the
Change permissions permission in the "Auditing Entry for ..." page.
After that, you can check the security logs in event viewer once some changes the permissions on that file.
    Best regards,
    Susie

  • Dreamweaver CS6 - FTP changing my file permissions on upload???

    ORIGINAL POST: SEPT 19, 2012  http://forums.adobe.com/message/4784335#4784335
Upgraded to cs6. All programs work perfect for me exceopt Dreamweaver.
I have never expierenced this challenge however no matter what file(s) I upload dreamwever is chanign the file permissions.
For instance if I upload an image to the sever the image won't appear. I check permissions and they are set to 0.  Same with files.
I have to now go in to each item I upload and change permissions to 644 or 755 depending if its a file or directory.
This is a Dreamweaver exclusive problem as it does not happen when I use Filezilla and Im working on 6 different servers.
ONLY when I upload files with Dreamweaver CS6 do the file permissions change on upload. Cs5.5 no problem.
    Any ideas?
    Aloha!
    STILL NOT WORKING UPDATE:
I was even on with India Adobe support doing a screen share and they watched in real time as I uploaded a file and Dreamweaver and it changed the permissions to 000. You can 'Get' a file with 775 permissions then 'Put' that same file and it will chanve to 000 permissions.
Support failed to address this problem after 30 days and never called back.
STILL NOT WORKING UPDATE: Changing ro SFTP seems to be a workaround.
See Full Discussion here as I posted in the wrong area. http://forums.adobe.com/message/4784335#4784335

I'm using DW6 version 12.2, and this problem is still happening.
The permissions are defaulting to 0664, where I need them to be 0644.  Every time I create a new file, it defaults to 0664, and I'm unable (not permitted) to view that file online until I go in, using another FTP program, and change the permissions to 0644... or manually go in the slow-poke way using DW6 Remote View -> [file name] -> Set Permissions.
Too bad there's no way to configure this in the Preferences area of DW6.
