Permissions constanly screwed up....

i repair permissions on my MBP periodically. recently, i keep getting a long list of incorrect permissions that keep returning no matter how many times i repair - they return after restart, or even if i just repair permissions two times in a row. below is the most recent repair log.
any idea what it might be?

  • Role permissions all screwed up in Catalog

If a user is assigned a role that is granted Open access (Read + Traverse) to a subfolder somewhere below Shared Folders, and the administrator elects to grant Traverse access back to the root, the user will still not be able to see the subfolder in BI Analytics. Even worse, the user can't even see the Shared Folders folder in BI Publisher with these permissions.
Only if you explicitly grant Read access to each folder along the path to the subfolder can the user see any of those folders. Even if a low-level folder has Read access, you can't see it unless the entire chain also has Read access.

  • File permissions screwed up after using Migration Assistant

Hi All, just got a new iMac and am having some problems... hoping someone here can help... especially since Apple support is closed on this Labor Day holiday!
So, i just got a new iMac, with Snow Leopard. It will be replacing my Mac Mini, with Leopard.
I used migration assistant to successfully move over all my files and docs and applications from the mini to the iMac. Took 7 hours but I was happy to see that everything transferred over safely!
Now, prior to the migration, I had the same username and password on both machines (eg. BVsmurfette). However, when I ran the migration assistant program, it prompted me to change one of them b/c it said I couldn't use the same usernames. So, I made the mac mini username = bvsmurfettemini.
Once the migration was complete, I noticed that instead of putting all my files into the user name on my iMac (ie. BVsmurfette), it created a separate user folder called bvsmurfette mini.
Thinking it would be silly to have to go into a separate user folder each time I wanted to access my files, I thought, ok, i'll just move all those files into the bvsmurfette folder. so, i dragged everything over from bvsmurfettemini, into bvsmurfette.
However - now i've noticed that all the file permissions are screwed up!
bvsmurfette doesn't have read/write access to any of the folders or files. bvsmufettemini does.
so - i clicked on each parent folder (eg. documents, music, pictures, movies, eetc), and clicked on "get info" and changed the permissions/sharing so that bvsmurfette was the owner, and clicked the "apply to all enclosed items" option. I thought this would automatically change the permissions/sharing of every single file and sub-folder within each parent folder.
To my surprise - it didn't work. The sub-folders and files within each parent still have their old permission settings. Argh! Can anyone please help? I refuse to believe that the only way around this is to manually click on every single file (which i have thousands and thousands of) and reset the permission settings...
Thanks so much in advance for any help and advice.

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions..
Open the Disk Utility application. (Applications/Utilities) and repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • HD Not Accessible to Repair Permissions

Hello. I hope you can help me isolate the error that is keeping my Intel iMac G5 from booting properly. I’m running 10.4.
It froze after I’d been backing up onto DVD/dumping old data (about 20GB worth). Whenever I tried restarting the screen would freeze on the grey apple logo, sometimes with the swirly icon.
When I ran Disk Utility off the install disk at first it indicated “error detected” on mass storage, but later said it was fine. But I could not run Repair successfully (I kept getting "repair failed" messages), and the Repair Disk Permissions button was not accessible (greyed out).
I could not startup in safe mode. And if I tried to restart in DU the only option was a Network (which I'm not hooked up to).
Once I got a Kernal panic screen but most of the time it was just a grey apple with the fan hitting 900 rpm.
Finally I ran DiskWarrior and in 15 minutes it had cleaned out and rebuilt my HD. I thought I was home clear.
However, even though Disk Utility now says my HD is fine, it still does not allow me to Repair Disk Permissions - the option is greyed out. And if I boot up pressing Option to select a Startup Disk, the rebuilt drive is not one of them.
It appears my /Library/Receipts folder is empty.
What’s more, if I try to run an admin command in Terminal, like
    sudo diskutil repairPermissions /
    I get the message:
    -bash: sudo: command not found
In fact, any way I try typing sudo I get a “command not found” message, even if I try to run other command like chmod.
    When I type:
    Users
    I get
    Users: command not found.
    So I typed:
    Echo $PATH
    And get
    /bin:/sbin:/usr/bn:/usr/sbin:/usr/libexec:/System/Library/CoreServices
I’m not sure at this point whether the fact that the DiskWarrior-rebuilt drive doesn’t show up among Startup options (when I boot with option key) is because of missing/broken permissions; an empty /Library/Receipts folder; missing users; or a missing path.
Any and all help is appreciated. Thank you.

Oy. I purchased an external drive and began installing Mac OSX onto it, so that I could then migrate all files from the unbootable hard drive before running an Archive & Install. That part seemed to go smoothly. But a few problems have emerged:
    1. Though I was prompted to keep Disk 2 of the install ready, it never asked me for it, even though I ran the installation 2 or 3 times. Consequently while I can select the external drive when booting up command-S, I can only see Install window, Disk Utility or Terminal windows - never a desktop, preferences drop down, help menu, finder, all the things I'd typically see when launching my machine. Is this normal? Is there a way to force it to install only disk 2 if it has things it needs for full bootable GUI / access?
    2. Booting up with the install disk, in disk utility I can see both drives but still cannot repair permissions on my affected HD. I tried via Terminal (repairPermissions, chmod or chown) commands; I keep getting error messages (command not found).
    3. Switching cd / to my new drive in Terminal, I was able, I think, to change permissions (755) but when I open Disk Utility the drive is still not writable and "Repair Disk Permissions" is still grayed out.
    4. I could not open Migration Assistant on the new drive via Disk Utility, so I copied it from the HD into its own folder on the new one, but am really confused about the whole Disk Image thing. If I create a new disk image and try to open it, convert or checksum it, it still is grayed out, I can never just open it. I tried running commands in Terminal to run that application on the external drive, pointing to the new folder, to the .app, to the contents, .dmg, and no commands seem to work, I keep getting the command not found message.
If I just run the A&I, I fear I'll lose my data which is why I wanted to migrate everything over before I did so. But if the user / owner permissions are screwed up and the only way to fix them is A&I, I don't know what else to do.
Is there ANY way to boot from the install, run Migration Assistant from the external drive (either through Disk Utility or Terminal) and copy all files from HD? If not, I guess I'll have to cross fingers and A&I.
Gee, I used to love my Mac ...

    Hi there,
I seem to have the same problems after migrating from my MBP 15" (The Model Just Before the Unibody) to a new Macbook. I could not do a clean install as I have my company webpage withing my old computer. Now whenever I run DU i get these errors. I took it back to the shop and they suggested that I do a clean install.
Am wondering if future updates would clear this mess. As for it affecting performance, I notice a lag in when i multitask, 3-4 tabs on Safari and I get the spinning ball. Is this normal for a Macbook? I didnt have this problem on my old 15 inch. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Wrong home directory permissions for new users

    Hi everyone.
I reinstalled my laptop the other day and ran into a rather strange problem: after a system update new users had their permissions totally screwed. It took me 3-4 reinstalls to notice, as i was also playing with lvm2 &co. Anyway, on fresh installations from either 2008.06 or 2009.02, everything works fine. As soon as i update to the latest package versions (including 2.6.29 kernel) and create a new user, permissions on the new home directory are screwed up to the point where the user can't access it.
    Old directory permissions:
    drwx------ 33 jasn users 4,0K 17. Apr 13:21 jasn

The whole mess can be fixed by changing the permissions on the home directory, but all that can't be on purpose, can it? I also don't know which package update (if it even was caused by one) causes this behaviour and if this only happens to me, so i didn't file a bug report.
Has anyone already seen this? I solved it after 1.5 days of puzzled (and strangely unsuccessful) googling and reinstalling, so perhaps someone who runs into the same problem can use this to fix it.

umask is not really the correct thing to do in this case, as this resets the permissions for every file the user creates. Afaik, the umask setting has to be installed on every machine via the launchd-user.conf file (to contain simply: umask 002) (or whatever is appropriate for your facility), as umask is a property of the process, not the connection.
What might work better for your problem is make the homedirs world and group non-readable. That way the user creates files within their homedirs and anywhere below, but everyone else can't read them regardless of the files' permissions because the directory itself is unreadable.

  • Permissions on user accounts

    Hi,
I think during my last incompleted backup (using Ibackup) my user permissions got screwed up. Now I can read and write in any user (Spotlight is also looking up all files in any user). The repair permissions using the disk utility failed. Well it didn´t fail.. it said it repaired the permissions. But it still doesn´t work. What can I do?

Hi, if I'm reading you correctly, you wish to "share" files and folders with other users?
You are dropping the files into the "shared" folder at Finder > Your computer name > Users > Shared - and changing the files or folders "Ownership and Permissions" to read and write?
On mine, my "shared" folders have:
1 Owner > my computer name - read and write
2 Group > wheel - read and write
3 Others > read and write
If you are using the "Public" folder drop box for any user, then change the "Details" to read and write for all.
Post back if you need any further details.
    Best wishes,
    Robert.

  • I have a late 2008 iMac and am having permissions issues.

I've run the utility several times, but it doesn't fix the issue.  Several of my programs say they can't save because the permissions are screwed up.  Any ideas?  I have tried to reset them

Have you had the opportunity to read Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore?

  • Mailman permissions break regularly

I upgraded my server from 10.4 to 10.5, which I suspect is the problem, but … Mailman regularly refuses to let me (or anyone) in via the Web interface. It throws up the "we've hit a bug" page. Running /usr/share/mailman/bin/check_perms -f (as root) brings up a lot of permissions errors, such as:
directory must be at least 02775: /private/var/mailman (fixing)
directory must be at least 02775: /usr/share/mailman (fixing)
directory permissions must be 02775: /usr/share/mailman/messages/ar (fixing)
After running check_perms, as expected, the Web interface works again. For a while, about a day. Then the permissions get screwed up again and have to be fixed. There's nothing in /var/log/mailman/* (in fact, while the directory exists, nothing is ever written to the log files within) and /var/mailman/logs/error has nothing of interest in it, either.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? I thought it might be peripherally related to DirectoryService's regularly self-destruction, but I don't know for sure.

The only headway I've made is to run mailman's permissions fix script whenever I happen to think of it. I don't fix permissions in Disk Utility, so it's not that… I think the daily maintenance script is doing it, but I've never gotten around to digging deeper as other frustrating things with 10.5 Server (like Apache) have keep me occupied.

  • AirDisk Permissions Problems

I have three Macs—an iMac at work, an iMac at home and a MacBook. I have been going back and forth between the two iMacs with a 40-gb external hard drive, which has all my files/data/etc. I have tried attaching the external hard drive to my AirPort Extreme base station with the latest firmware updates, which I thought would make it easier for my MacBook to access the files on the drive (rather than connecting through the iMac). But it looks like permissions get screwed up on the external drive when I attach it to the base station. The original owner (myself) is not preserved, and this means that some applications (e.g. OmniFocus) can no longer correctly read/write files. Is there a way to fix this problem?

The Finder will let me explore my disk, but if I try to transfer a file to it it says:
The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50).
Ejecting the airdisk "can't be completed because iTunes is using it" but if I try to update my podcasts, they immediately stop with the status "zero KB of xy.z MB - stopped (err = -50)".
If I quit iTunes, it will allow me to eject it.  Then reconnect, and it works properly again both with file transfers and podcasts.  Sleeping, momentarily, does not affect the connectivity, which points back to the DHCP issue.  Maybe I can assign my computer a set IP?
Hmm... that didn't seem to work, still "disconnected" after sleeping overnight.

  • Startup Permissions & File Permissions

Recently, something went wrong within my computer. I'm not sure what it was, but a lot of the file permissions got screwed up. I can no longer use VMware Fusion, as it claims that it does not have the rights to run the program and to access all directories it uses for files, and so on. Also, at startup, I get a whole flood of warning messages saying that startup items were omitted due to lack of correct permissions. Is there some way to just set all file permissions back to default to end this misery?
I have already spent two days researching, and I'm wondering if someone has found a way to solve this.
Keep this in mind: Most people will say, "Reinstall your OS and all your programs." Here is my problem: I purchased this computer legally with a huge bundle of software, including CS5 and Final Cut Studio. They are both legal, but unfortunately, I don't have the installation stuff for them. So, does anyone have any suggestions?
I don't want to re-install my OS - that would hurt everything I have.
My computer specs, because someone is bound to ask for them:
    Intel Core i5
    8GB RAM
    512MB VRam
MacOSX Snow Leopard (10.6, I believe)
In dire need of good help! Thanks, I'm glad I found this community. If this question has already been answered, please link me the page. I couldn't find it.
    Colin

  • Help: folders in Mail disappeared!

I regularly check two POP mailboxes in Mail in 10.4.3.
While on vacation, I moved the Users/Library/Mail folder and my Mail prefs (Users/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.prefs or whatever it is) to my laptop and then proceeded to work from my laptop while I was traveling. Worked fine.
Came home, did the opposite (dragged those two files from the laptop to the desktop), started up Mail, and everything looks normal -- I have my two POP boxes at the top, then a couple dozen folders below that. But as soon as I click "Get New Mail" all the couple dozen folders disappear!
If I quit and reboot Mail, the same thing happens.
If I reboot Mail, but click on any of these folders, I can go through them and read messages, etc, but as soon as I click Get New Mail (or it does that automatically, on a 5-minute timer), all my folders disappear!! (Leaving only the POP boxes, Drafts, Sent, Trash, and Junk)
    HELP!
    Both computers running 10.4.3.

I did correctly copy both the Mail folder and the prefs file.
I later solved the issue. For some inexplicable reason, two of my mail folder's permissions got screwed up in the transfer. I found this after I went into my Mail folder, looked at the long list of folders, and saw the red sign next to two of them. After I reset them both to read and write (and their contents), Mail is now back to functioning normally.
I have no clue what set this off (the permissions were fine on the source computer's Mail folder and all its contents), but that solved it.
    Argh. I hate permissions.

  • Imac won't restore from time machine backup after HD (hard drive) recall replacement

I have an imac bought in 2011, running Snow Leopard.  It required an HD replacement due to the 1 TB Seagate recall - the replacement was done by a certified Apple repair station yesterday.  Before the guy left he started a backup/restore from my latest time machine backup set.  It failed.  I attempted it two times and got error messages that it failed and the computer needed to be restarted to try it again.  No luck.  I called the guy back and he told me to call Apple Care.  Not thrilled about that response since the guy had just left my house I did what he told me to do.  (A quick sideline here:  I recognize that a time machine backup should be no big deal and SHOULD work everytime, but it doesn't.  It irks me that Apple is replacing my HD through no fault of mine and yet they don't allow the restore of data to be a "covered" expense in this process - this isn't just because this was an authorized repair guy - the Apple store would have done the same).
Back to the issue.  When I called apple care they pretty much had me try the same thing again with an earlier back up set.  To my knowledge, it didn't work.  I say this because it looked like it was working and when I came back to the imac later, it had restarted and once again booted to the OSX install.  (The boot disc is still in the imac).  When I tried to boot from another location, one did not show up to boot from so I assumed that the data didn't transfer and it forced another restart.  So, I tried something else.  I tried to re-install the snow leopard OSX without using the restore function.  That appeared to work and then when the machine restarted it asked if I had another mac and I chose the option to get the files/apps/etc. from my time machine backup.  The computer chose what I can only assume is the most recent backup set (It chose what I know to be a subfolder that appears under the dated backup folder - Macintosh HD--which btw is confusing seeing as that's always the name of the HD on the imac).  I again stepped away from the computer so it could do its thing for two hours.  When I returned, I was back to the MAC OSX screen that asks you to choose a language.  There were no more options to choose DISK UTILITY or RESTORE FROM BACKUP, etc.  When I clicked on English it took me right back into the screen where you say whether you have another Apple that you want to transfer data from.  I realized that the imac must have restarted and I assumed maybe it was because the boot disk was still in - except how do you get the disc to eject?  I also initially assumed that the backup had somehow failed again and triggered a restart.  I tried to choose the option to just set up the machine without transferring data and when I got to the choose a name for your HOME folder message I tried to enter the same name I had it as before and it wouldn't allow me to do so, saying that that name was already in use.  I also tried a different name and that didn't work either - got the same message (I assume if it is not the same name that it won't sync up with the time machine data from the backup set).  So, I almost tried the "select time machine backup" option again until I looked at my HD space.  Clearly, there is space that has been used.  HD space was 997 at the start and now it's 636. My initial thought is to somehow get back into the setup area where I can use disc utility and erase the whole thing and then start over but 1) I don't think it's going to work even if I could get back there 2) I have no idea how to get this thing to reboot into that mode 3) I can't get the boot CD out to even try to restart to see if this thing did what it was supposed to, SO NOW I AM TOTALLY STUCK!  I have not called Apple Care back because quite frankly they were useless the first time.  I have a call into the repair guy but who knows how much help he will be.  In the mean time, I have a million things to do and a computer that isn't working - Whoever said Apples never have issues needs to be seriously censored!
A few other notes:  I use Time Machine Editor to run my backups weekly.  It was set up that way from the get go by an Apple rep who came to my house to get us up and running.  Editor should not effect the way that time machine does its work, so I doubt there is relevance but thought it worth mentioning.
One other note is that the Apple Care agent tried to have me do something called a "Source" something or other from the disk utility screen but when she realized that my backup file (shown by date) contained many other sub files (11-27-12/MacintoshHD/MyNamesIMAC/etc.), it was not possible to run this operation - thus we aborted.  Sorry I don't remember the name of the process and unfortunately now can't access that option to go find it.
If you can help me, I would be eternally grateful!  I am open to having a phone conversation if you are willing to give me your email to mail you my number. I have so much work to do this week and this was the last thing I needed.  Did I mention this was supposed to be EASY?
I used to be quite the geek with my PC - still on the learning curve with the mac but not enjoying it.  I am fairly tech savvy and I can follow instructions for a step by step solution if you've got one.

I got a recall and had the drive replaced. I have retored 3 timesa dn even had apple do the job and it is still not right. I still can't get a simple ghost of the data from time machineback tot he new drive.
This is Apple's explaination as taken from their web page.:
Restoring your entire system from a backup
If you are restoring a backup made by a Mac to the same Mac
With your backup drive connected, start up your Mac from the Recovery system (Command-R at startup) or Mac OS X v10.6 installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility.
Note: If "You can't restore   this backup because it was created by a different model of Mac" appears  when restoring  a backup that was  made on a different Mac, follow the onscreen instructions.
I even posted this information on the community and apple removed it... because they don't like the:
    Off-topic or non-technical posts
    Non-constructive rants or complaints
    But here is my experieince:
Take in 27iMac running 10.6.8, 5-7 days, what a joke, my boss will be happy to pay for a week without working. Finally get, "if you have TM back up, 3 days." Get machine back with 10.6.3, hit the R recovery, click TM back up, runs for 2 hours, reboots, looks great. Box up take back to office... update to install - OH NO, still running 10.6.3. Updates crash with no specific error on install, BUG PROBELM, nothing runs.
Call Apple... after hours, tells me to boot using 10.6.2 disk, wipe, reinstall OS, udate to 10.6.8, THEN do the restore. GREAT! Only thing 10.6.2 DVD won't read... now back on phone... take back to the store, Genius says, he'll ix it just like it was. PROMISES it'll be fixed.
Pick up next day, supposedly, booted to disk, wiped drive, reinstalled, updated to 10.6.8 and THEN did the RIGHT restore... Looks GREAT... apps run and 10.6.8 OS. Back to the office... NOT RUNNING right!!!... fonts messed up, drop box app needs new install, cocktail needs upgrade, Fetch not working, memorized paths gone... back ups locked out of permissions... ***!!
4 hours on phone with apple and still no rsolution - to missing "settings". Seems there are THREE WAYS TO RESTORE (according to apply tech)... Running MIGRATE ASSISTANT and being able to choose your files, including settings, "R" RESTORE after they load a new OS... or NOW WAITING for them to send me a bootable 10.6.3 disk and then boot from disk, w/o installing OS and doing a restore from TM. I think this is done via the disk Utilties application.
So now can't back up without doing a full 400 GB back up since permissons are screwed and possibly destroying any good back ups... can't work, like having hands tied behind back. WAITING for solution! Very upset!!!
I did my first restore just like they said and now an 10 days without proper machine. Just FYI. I thnk I am going to make the store do the tech work so I have somthing to fall back on.

  • Windows Mail could not be started. Make sure that your disk is not full or that you are not out of memory (0x800C0155).

I have Vista SP2. Every time I open Firefox (3.6.13), I get three consecutive error messages:
    1) Windows Mail could not be started. The application was unable to open the Windows Mail message store. Your Windows Mail mailbox data is currently being used by another program, such as a virus scanner. Close the program or wait for it to complete its operation, then open Windows Mail again (0x800C0155).
    2) Windows Mail could not be started. Make sure that your disk is not full or that you are not out of memory (0x800C0155).
    3) Windows Mail could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be initialized.
This series of messages continue to recur during my Firefox session and eventually will freeze up my session.
I use Gmail. I do not use Windows Mail or Outlook Express and deleted Windows Live Mail. There is a a file named msoe.dll using the path C: /Program Files/Windows Mail. I also found C:/Program Files/Windows Live/RemoteActiveX even though I thought I deleted all Windows Live programs.
I have set Firefox as the default browser. Also, in Firefox, if I click on "File=>Send Link", it triggers the series of three error messages above.
I don't understand why Gmail would reference Winmail. Any ideas how I can fix this? Can I or should I delete the Windows Mail and Windows Live folders?

I have had many problems with permissions on Windows Vista, 7,8 & 81.1.  It is usually after an update or installation, especially one that requires a reboot to finish (some AVG, Windows Live, Windows Updates, etc).  Once File(s), Folder(s)
and Registry Key(s) permissions are screwed up, it can take days to work them out if ever.
After having spent several hours on a clients PC and online forums with this problem.  I transferred her user profile with a free program called
Transwiz (run as Administrator) to a zip file on the HDD.  I renamed her user in manage User Accounts to "Username old".  I then ran Transwiz again to restore the profile but telling it to create a new user using the original Username.
After it completed restoring the profile, I logged out of "Username old" and logged in to Username and all wass well, I only needed to supply the email password which is not transferred.  When you move profile data, all the old permissions
have to be removed and <st1:personname w:st="on">new</st1:personname> permissions added so the data and files belong to the <st1:personname w:st="on">new</st1:personname> user.  This cleared up all the permission
    problems.

  • Single account on imac can see but cannot connect over network

This one is driving me crazy:
As of this morning I cannot connect to other computers in our network. Using other accounts on the same imac is no problem, but mine simply refuses.
I can see the rest of the network, connect to the internet, print, etc., but if I try to actually connect to another machine I get the error that it cannot find the original item (the error is in Dutch so I cannot give the litteral version)
Network, firewall and sharing settings seem to be the same as the other, working, accounts as far as I can tell.

OK, we found the problem. my permissions were screwed up...
