Permissions Database Repair

A few weeks ago I found that I couldn’t empty the Trash. I asked for help and was told to use Disk Utility to repair the Permissions Database. I did so. This solved the problem. I ran into this problem again and again and successfully applied the same remedy. I encountered the problem again today and applied the remedy. I wasn’t able to empty the Trash this time. I repeated the action again with the same results. I went on with this action about 10 times with the same results.
I decided to stop, wondering if I had accomplished anything. Would there be no end to it? I don’t understand the situation at all. Can someone please explain what is wrong and what to do about it.
My files are backed up and I am prepared to reinstall Leopard.

Thanks for your reply. I reviewed an earlier post of mine on this topic. I was reminded of Option / Delete. I had forgotten it. I right-clicked on the Trash just now and found that it was empty, leaving me somewhat mystified. All’s well that ends well. I have downloaded Trashit in case the problem returns.

Repairing Disk Permissions is stuck on "Reading Permissions Database"

Ever since I installed Leopard awhile ago I have not been able to repair my disk permissions. The Disk Utility progress bar stays on the spinning stripes indicating it is "Reading Permissions Database". I've been canceling out of it and just forgoing the process, but now my iCal is totally blank and I want to see if this will fix my problem. Do I just need to do a clean install?
I've searched through other posts and haven't found any other problem like this.

repair permissions in leopard takes much longer than in tiger (up to 40 minutes on older machines). You should let it finish.

Disk Permissions not repaired

I run Disk Utility>First Aid>Repair Disk Permission every couple of weeks. Until recently running this utility has cleared all repairs. But now I am getting a list of repairs that doesn't "clear" (meaning that the next time I run Repair Disk Permissions, the same list appears again. This has been associated with iTunes and iPhoto running slower than they have in the past. The list (see below) seems to refer mostly to Front Row, iTunes and iPhoto. Please advise if you know what's going on and how to fix it. Here is the list:

Permissions repair complete

I have exactly the same issue. I have 100 plus of those same errors showing up all involving iPhoto, iTunes & Front Row. No matter what I do, I cannot get rid of the errors. Doing an archive & install is a last resort for me. I have not yet tried the 10.5.6 combo reinstall yet either.
What I have done so far:
1.Soft boot repair permissions & restarting.
2.Regular boot or restart, repaired permissions and restarting.
3.Ran the install disc verify disk and repair permissions settings. Disk results are always green - no problems. The exact same errors show up on the disc when repairing permissions & remain there without disappearing
4.Ran Diskwarrior. All green. Graph 0% out of order.
5.Ran Techtool Deluxe. All clear.
I never get the permissions has been repaired. It's always, permissions repair completed. Well, what exactly did it complete? Sure isn't repairing.
I am going to give Apple Care a call. I paid for it, might as well get my monies worth!! Will post their solution here _*IF IT WORKS.*_

Permissions actually repaired?

I've read several other threads concerning this topic. Pages and pages of the exact same permissions that are repaired each time the function is triggered, mostly involving Quicktime.
All updates installed and everything works well except for a few annoying quirks, like Safari not loading local news pages when other browsers will load them readily. Many mpeg clips won't play; massage states 'Quicktime requires additional software'. Same answers in every thread I viewed too.
Supposing I'm looking for more substantive answers.
1. Do not be concerned.
2. This is normal.
3. This is to be expected.
Sounds like something issued by the Ministry of Truth in a George Orwell book. My question: Are 'back doors' for use by government agencies being installed in our machines without our knowledge?
Still looking for an honest, competent 3rd party repair shop who will repair my Pismo. 20 months, 3 'Authorized Apple Repair' shops and at least $1000 later I still have an inoperable unit sitting on another desk here in my office. Last contact was "Make an appointment, bring it by and we'll show you how to turn it on".
I thought about humoring them but its too far to drive (100 miles). Thinking when my Macbook Pro can no longer be repaired at the Repair Depot or at an Apple Store then its toast. Sad and pathetic.

Permissions Database disappeared

Hello,
My iMac hung up on shutdown, I just had the spinning wheel for about 10 minutes. The startup drive was very full. I forced the machine to shutdown by hlding down the power button. Upon restart it seems that a few permission problems have appeared: I cannot access my idisk (it says the password is incorrect, I cannot access my shared folder (it asks for the password). I went to disk utility to repair permissions, it ran repair permissions which lasted for about 3 seconds and says it's all fine. Repair permissions on my machine usually takes about 10 minutes at least. It seems that my permissions database has been reset somehow. How can I rebuild it?

When the act of repairing permissions takes no more than a few seconds or two, it's a symptom of exactly what you figured it must be: the permissions database isn't readable.
The permissions database is called "a.receiptdb," and it resides in the "Library/Receipts/db" directory. The files located in the nearby "Library/Receipts/boms" directory are the source for generating the database.
If any of the .bom files are missing, I won't be able to help you. If, on the other hand, you're experiencing the same problem I did, here's what what worked for me:
cd /Library/Receipts
sudo chown -R _installer:wheel boms
sudo chown -R _installer:admin db
If you're not comfortable using the Terminal, I'm sorry to say I don't have anything less .. um .. geeky. I tried to figure a way to do it all in the Finder, but using the "Get Info" window to change owners & permissions is too limited to work.

Permissions not repairing

Hi,
Setting up my wife's new mac mini today. used setup assistant to transfer users and settings from my mbp running 10.4.11 which was updated and permissions repaired before doing anything. i did transfer everything, applications, users, files, etc. (maybe i shouldn't have done the apps) anyway, things seemed to go smoothly.
then...
repaired permissions on mini before taking software updates--ok
took software updates, restarted--ok
repaired permissions again and there was a ton to fix.
did followup repair to see if all were caught. but they weren't.
repaired again. but now keep getting the same results over and over.
three are related to system/library/frameworks/java...
comes back saying those three are repaired.
also get five "Warning SUID file ....... has been modified and will not be repaired.
after repeated attempts i keep getting the same results, whether i do restarts in between or not. i figure sooner or later these bad permissions will come back to bite me if i don't get it fixed. suggestions? should i start over, erase and install but this time without the apps.

The short answer is the cause is differences in the permissions database the process compares to the item's actual metadata. Permissions can be "repaired" only in the sense that they can be reset to what is in the database when the two differ.
So for instance, if an OS or application update doesn't update the database as well as the item itself, you get a message telling you about that. It isn't an error in the item, just in the database, & the process is smart enough not to "fix" the item … which actually would be an error!

Each time I repair permissions I get this same dialog and then have to wait "several minutes" before anything happens. Does anyone else have these problems with DU repairing permissions after updating to 10.5.3? (I previously joined this thread, but someone decided to close the topic due to their having no problem with Disk Utilities: problem solved!) This is still going on with my computers ever since the update.

Thank you so much for giving me some confidence in my computer. One of my Apples (desktop G4 duo) has been only problems since I bought it about five years ago. Apple has a note about this:
Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore
Just trust that repair permissions did its job.
But the real question here is why are you bothering with repair permissions in the first place? For most cases it is unnecessary.

Permissions not repairing with Disk Utility

I booted off my internal backup drive to run Disk Utilities on my main drive as I've been having some display problems and wanted to check for viruses and check the integrity of my drive. No viruses, disc verifies OK, but I had a lot of permissions needing repair, which I did.
I then cleared history and ran Verify Permissions again and even though the repair said all permissions were repaired except the last SUID file, these 7 came back. I ran repair again. Disk Utility said all except SUID were repaired like before. Ran verify again and they same 7 plus SUID showed up needing the same repairs Disk Utility said it fixed twice before.
Is this indicative of a serious problem? Any ideas how to fix them? Do I even need to?
Have MacPro1,1 - Running OSX 10.6.7, 8 GB RAM

Thanks re permissions. I was going to try DiskWarior, to see if it could repair them, but won't now.
For viruses I ran MacScan. Only found some tracking cookies and removed them.
(PS: with the new Discussions points, is it better to click Correct Answer or Helpful Answer? I wanted to click both, but after clicking Helpful, Correct disappeared. Guess I should have clicked Correct for you. I assume this is how we acrue points?)

Disk Utility can't Verify Disk Permissions" and "Repair Disk Permissions"

I tried to run "Verify Disk Permissions" and "Repair Disk Permissions" on an external partition, but they all grayed out! "Verify Disk" and "Repair Disk" were fine! The "Owners Enabled" is "Yes". Why they were grayed out ?!

Other partitions on the SAME drive are able to do "Very Disk Permissions" and
"Repair Disk Permissions" (as they are NOT grayed out !) The ONLY difference
between the one (CAN'T) and the rest partitions is that one (CAN'T) has
owner by "admin", and the rest partitions (OK to veryify pewrmissions) are owner
by "system". ANY CLUE ?

The options to verify or repair permissions are only available on a disk with Mac OS X 10.2 or newer installed, and all Mac OS X versions set the owner of the partition containing them to system when installed.

Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
Then Repair the backup Disk... any change?

All events lost after database repair

Hello, I repaired my iPhoto database - just to maintain it and do some house keeping - bad Idea ... now all photos are merged in a single event and all other events ore simply gone ... any idea out there?

If you only ran the Repair Database option try again with option #4, Rebuild Database, selected. See if that will restorfe your events/photos.

10.4.6 - no permissions need repair?

alright, maybe this isn't a problem, per se, but it is odd. i've noticed on three computers so far, after updating to 10.4.6, repairing permissions finds nothing to repair! it used to always need to change some widgets permissions or dvd player or some other thing, every time. have they fixed something? or... is it missing something...?

The only time you'll see anything now, is when there's an actual problem which cannot be repaired. Thank Goodness !!!! Those messages were very upsetting to all those who felt that each message was an error, and there were ton's of things wrong, when in fact, nothing was wrong. Normally, they were just notations. Now everyone can relax !!!
