Permissions differ - Forever!

What's up with Disk Utility indicating a repair of:
“Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/Safari.help/Contents/Resources/index .html”; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are -rwxr-xr-x .
Every time I Repair Permissions, this file always differs. (So its not actually being repaired!)
This occurs even with a fresh install of 10.9.3 on a fresh HD.

Boot Camp Now Hangs Every Time & Every Which Way
My Fall 2013 installation of Windows 8 was a breeze! I’ve been running Windows 8.1 until a week ago when my internal “Windows” drive was no longer visible as a boot drive. I option-key boot into one of three internal drives:
SSD / 10.9.3
1TB HD / 10.6.8
1TB HD / Windows
Convincing myself that I must have missed something, I’ve studied and re-studied the Boot Camp Installation & Setup Guide and have read and tried the procedures described in numerous discussions and youtube videos.
Expect that this seems radical but thought it smart maintenance to back up all Windows HD data and reformat the Windows HD. I pulled my SSD (no mess with), booted into Recovery-10.9.3 and installed a clean 10.9.3.
>Put Windows installation DVD in CD drive >Shut down >reboot w/ Option+Command+p+r (reset PRAM) >Reboot 10.9.3
Mac Pro is now configured simply as:
1TB HD / 10.9.3
Windows DVD
32GB Flash
My failed installs with Boot Camp Assistant (5.1.2):
1.
Boot Camp Assistant adds a partition to 10.9.3, downloads and installs Windows support software >system auto reboots >black screen >chimes >grey screen >Windows CD spins up> then spins down >I wait for an hour+ but nothing seems to be going on and grey screen remains. (I never get to the Windows setup phase.)
reboot >launch Disk Utility >remove partition added for Boot Camp >shut down and reboot
2.Boot Camp Assistant adds a partition to 10.9.3, downloads and installs Windows support software >system auto reboots >I option-key and 10.9.3, Recovery-10.9.3, Windows (CD), and Boot EFI (CD) options are presented >I select Windows but it immediately hangs. (Can’t boot to the Windows Installation DVD.)
reboot >launch Disk Utility >remove partition added for Boot Camp >shut down and reboot
3.
Boot Camp Assistant adds a partition to 10.9.3, downloads and installs Windows support software >system auto reboots >I option-key and 10.9.3, Recovery-10.9.3, Windows (CD), and Boot EFI (CD) options are presented >I select Boot EFI > Windows setup begins >I enter my Windows 8 key >Windows can’t find a drive for installation (even, from within Advanced option, formatting the disk during Windows setup process).
reboot >launch Disk Utility >remove partition added for Boot Camp >shut down and reboot
4.
Purchase AnyToISO for $23 to extract the ISO from my Windows 8 DVD. Easily done.
Edited the info.plist file for Boot Camp Assistant (youtube video VBAQ3CNgfxc) so that “Create a Windows 7 or later version install disk” would list as an option under Boot Camp Assistant’s "Select Tasks" window. Checked all three options. >Selected the fresh ISO file with the installation destination being my 32GB flash drive. Boot Camp downloads and installs latest Windows support software from Apple. >system reboots >black screen >chimes >grey screen >Windows CD spins up> then spins down > I wait for an hour+ but nothing seems to be going on and grey screen remains. (I never get to the Windows setup phase.)
Checking the content of the 32GB flash (now named “WININSTALL”) it contains:
          $WinPEDriver$ (folder)
          autorun.inf
          AutoUnattend.xml
          boot (folder)          BootCamp  (folder)
          Bootmgr
          bootmgr.efi
          efi  (folder)
          the .iso file
          setup.exe
          sources  (folder)
          support  (folder)
>shut down
I option-key reboot >10.9.3, Recovery-10.9.3, EFI Boot (flash drive), Windows (CD), and EFI Boot (CD) options are presented >I select the flash drive Boot EFI >Windows setup begins >I enter my Windows 8 key >Windows can’t find a drive for installation.
The only significant hardware/software differences (between now and my initial installation of Windows) is the progression of OS updates to the current (10.9.3) and the current version of Boot Camp Assistant (5.1.2).
Other recent procedures:
-verified my HD
-repaired permissions
-reset PRAM
For most install attempts I let Boot Camp Assistant build the partition. However, I’ve also tried adding a second partition manually w/ Disk Utility to make room for Boot Camp and Windows support software.
Do I need to regress to 10.9.1? IF that’s what was on my Mac Pro when received Fall 2013, it worked just fine!
What a nightmare!
I’m going crazy here!
Any suggestions appreciated!

  • Permissions differ but don't seem to repair

    Hello,
When I run verify permissions a long list of things pop up saying the permissions differ. But when I run repair permissions the same things pop up as differing permissions. I thought maybe it was just the computer telling me it was fixing the problem, but, out of curiosity, I ran verify permissions again. The same things popped up in the window. I've also got a problem with Safari, Mail, and iTunes hanging and when I try to force quit the application it won't actually force quit and the blue on light in the dock stays lit. I also noticed that one of the messages in verify permissions said something about iTunes. Could these two things possibly be connected. I was just about to run an archive install because I read in a thread that this would fix the latter problem of applications not quitting. But I also keep reading about verifying permissions before doing that, and I don't think I've had a successful verify and repair yet. Any and every piece of help is appreciated
Edit-now it's saying that one thing is irreparable. Answers?

    HI,
The permissions issues and Safari/Mail and iTunes issues are NOT related.
    First. You can safely ignore the messages when you repair disk permissions. They are a result of recent software updates. As long as you see these words at the bottom of the window;
Permissions repair complete, you have nothing to worry about.
Now, applications that freeze or crash and you can't quit.. that's different. Might be an underlying problem. Boot from your install disk and check the hard disk for errors.
*"and I don't think I've had a successful verify and repair yet."*
Do you mean you've run Disk Utility and it's reported errors and they aren't repaired? Here's how to do that.
Insert the installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
Check to see how much free disk space there is. Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.

    Sorry!
If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

  • Disk Permissions differ after a day

    Hi,
Just in the past couple of days my computer has been running very slowly. It has been taking 15 minutes to log in, so I fire up Disk Utility, Verify permissions and there are a heap of differing permissions. I repair permissions and the machine runs fine. The next day the computer is back to being slow. I go through verifying permissions and there are a heap of differing permissions again.
My Hard Drive is farily full, I have 2 partitions, the Macintosh HD partition is running at 7gb free and the extended partition has 32gb free. I don't know if a full disk would be causing these errors.
Here is a log of the disk utility.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

I have no idea but repairing permissions or not would not likely have any impact on the computer's login time (do you actually mean login as in entering your username and password or do you simply mean boot time?)
If your computer runs slow look for other possible causes such as incompatible third-party software you have installed or corrupted caches and/or preference files. See the following:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
    9. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
    10. MimMac (Commercial)
    11. CloneTool Hatchery (Shareware)
    12. Clone X (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast

Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.

I have already zeroed out the hard drive and re-installed Panther and the upgrade Tiger disc.
I repair permissions using the Tiger disc upgrade.
Can anyone help me with this??

    > I repair permissions using the Tiger disc upgrade.
One thing to note...  When running Repair Disk Permissions, it is best to run it while started up normally, from your normal startup disk, not from a Mac OS X installation disc.  The only time you should run it while started up from an installation disc is if some problem is preventing you from starting up normally. OTOH, Repair Disk can only be used when starting up from a different disk (such as an installation disc).
So, I would start up normally, run Disk Utility, and use Repair Disk Permissions on your normal startup disk.
NOTE:  Repair Disk Permissions often gives alerts messages that can be ignored.  They are more "informational," not serious errors.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
You should still run it periodically.  When you run it, what needs to be repaired has been repaired; consider the rest of it an FYI.  I've never experience a problem, where a Repair Disk Permissions message actually caused a problem.  But, if you ever get an error while running Repair Disk (or Verify Disk), that is usually a serious problem.

  • HT202447 Drive Utility: Permissions differ on "Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin"; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are drwxr-xr-x .

I downloaded & installed Java 7 for Mountain Lion 10.8.3 from http://www.java.com/download/mac_download.jsp . Upon running Verify Permissions in Drive Utility I receive the following messgae: Permissions differ on “Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin”; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are drwxr-xr-x . Disk Utilities is unable to repair the permissions error.

Sorry, what I meant is I was getting the message "missing plugin", so I thought I had to repair Permissions and every time I tried I got that message “Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin”; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are drwxr-xr-x", but then I followed Java instructions. I went back to Java 6 and finally I could access my bank.
I came across this article on the internet:
For the second time in a month, Apple has effectively blacklisted the current version of the Java Web plugin on OS X. The block comes just days after it was discovered that the latest version of the plugin, which had been rushed out to patch a critical vulnerability, can still be exploited despite its heightened security mechanisms.
Apple has worked to distance itself from Java in recent years. The company deprecated its own version of the Java virtual machine for OS X, instead deferring development to Oracle itself. The browser plugin in particular has become a common vector for malware attacks, and Apple removed the Java Web plugin from recent versions of OS X last year. Those needing the plugin must install it separately.
I even tried "About Java for OS X 2013-003", but it also didn't work.
That's why I decided to uninstalled Java 7 and installed 6 again and it worked.
    Thank you anyway.

They really don't require repair. They are part of the ARD update. Ignore them as they are harmless. They will recur everytime you repair permissions.

    2) Is it a serious security issue (i.e. malware)?
    3) What do I do about it?

"If you use the menu item "Go" and select the "Go to folder..." option, you can type in:
    /usr/lib
and check to see if ruby is an alias or an actual folder. It should appear as an alias in the Finder,"
    ============================================================================
Ok, did that so I'll give you an long list of stuff I found, if you have the patience to go through it all.
    Finder > Go > Go to folder > /usr/lib. There are 4 Ruby aliases (with arrow symbol) there: "libruby.1.dylib" , "libsvnswigruby-1.dylib" , "libsvnswigruby-1.0.dylib" and "libsvnswigruby-1.0.0.0.dylib".
AND, yes, there is also an ACTUAL RUBY FOLDER (blue, no arrow) in usr/lib.
    This Ruby folder breaks down into the following subfolders: (Finder>Library>)Ruby Folder (blue)> site_ruby > 1.8 > osx and powerpc-darwin 8.0 (two folders). In this "osx" folder there are 9 .rb files called active_record.rb, addressbook.rb, appkit.rb, cocoa.rb, coredate.rb, foundation.rb, NMOSXDockHelper.rb, qtkit.rb and webkit.rb. In the powerpc-darwin8.0 folder is a rubycocoa.bundle icon (like a lego brick).
The followinig actual folders (blue, no arrow)) are also present in usr/lib: dtrace, groff, java, mecab, openmpi, pam, php, pkgconfig, podcastproducer, sa, samba, sas12, sqlite3, system, and zsh.
    =================================================================
"and the original folder is supposed to be in
    "/System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby"
You might also check that location to see if the ruby folder is there."
    ==============================================================================
Yes, it's also in this location. There are 2 main Ruby folders (blue, nop arrow) in System/ Library/Frameworks: one called 'RubyCocoa.framework', the other Ruby.framework. Ruby.framework > 1.8 > usr > (here there are three more folders 'bin' , 'lib' and 'share') lib > ruby. Here, in this ruby folder are aliases (site_ruby' and 'user_gems' as well as actual folders called 'gems' and 1.8. In 1.8 there are further subfolders named bigdecimal, cgi, date, digest and such which are NOT in the Ruby folder in usr/lib.
    ============================================================================
I have no idea whether anything in the Mac OS actually uses ruby stuff or not. Ruby is a programming language, and Ruby on Rails is used in web development.

By the way, I performed the Safari 3.1 update, Garageband Update 4.1.2 , iPhoto Update 7.1.2 , and Airport Utility 5.3.1 update two days before this all happened. I rebooted after the updates were fully installed, used the macbook (starting and rebooting 2 or 3 times duringthe course of the day, after which everything seemed fine). Two days later when I tried to start the Macbook I got a very long blue screen (in excess of 7-8 minutes) and had to try starting several times before I could log on. Then I ran the disk utility and got the Ruby permissions message. I've performed all the disk repair stuff and the message remains.
I searched the Internet and could find no other examples of this happening. So, questions remain:
    1. Is there ANY possible way this could be malware, spyware, etc.?
    2. Any ideas as to how this change could have happened on my system?
    Thanks!

  • Solved: pacman - permissions differ on tmp/

Not sure if anyone else is seeing this because this may have been part of something I did a way back.  I'm getting:
    ( 35/400) upgrading filesystem [######################] 100%
warning: directory permissions differ on tmp/
    filesystem: 777 package: 1777
I know a bit about the filesystem package.  If I remember correctly it contains files that are Arch specific like the boot scripts...  Now if I'm reading this correctly the 777 permissions of "filesystem" is original directory and "package" is the package's permissions for the tmp directory.  Here's my /tmp directory permissions after the update:
    drwxrwxrwt 11 root root 4.0K Sep 13 11:41 tmp
Can anyone help me clarify this?  Is the problem now fixed, or is there something I need to do?
    Last edited by Gen2ly (2010-09-13 19:49:14)

I haven't seen pacman changing permission on directories yet, but according to the message, your /tmp didn't have the sticky bit set before the upgrade. Though things will work fine with just 777, not having the sticky bit on /tmp will mean that someone could delete and replace files owned by someone else, which is a security risk.

  • "Permissions differ" error message

I was working on my MacBook Pro when it suddenly froze up, probably because I had too many software programs open. (Also, I only have one GB of memory; I hope to upgrade to 2 GB in a couple weeks.)
Anyway, I couldn't figure out how to turn it off, so I just pushed the on/off button. After I restarted it, I opened Disk Utility and clicked Repair Disk. After the repairs were finished, I got the following error message:
Permissions differ on "private/var/log/secure.log", should be -nw------, they...
The message disappeared after I repaired the disk a second time. However, I'd like to know if this message has any significance, especially if it relates to my software programs freezing.
I did a search in Google, and it appears that this message is related to some sort of security update...
    http://www.thinkmac.net/blog/archives/news-apple-security-update-.html
Can anyone explain all this to me in plain English?
    Thanks.

That message is due to the weekly maintenance task giving that file permissions other than those defined for it in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. It doesn't relate to any problems you may experience.

  • Permissions Differ on Applications/iBooks.app

Hi I recently restarted my MacBook Pro mid 2012 with mavericks installed and was stuck on the start up loading screen.
I restarted on the recovery drive and did disk utility.
    After verifying the disk permissions I came across a number of problems that are all relating to iBooks.app - examples;
permissions differ on "applications/iBooks.app/contents/plugins/BKAssetEpub.bundle/contents/resources /cs.lproj/BKEpubAppearanceViewController.strings"; should be -rw-r--r-- they are -rw-rw-r--
    Group differs on "applications/iBooks.app/contents/plugins/BKAssetEpub.bundle/contents/resources /cs.lproj/localizable.strings"; should b 0; group is 80
There is a lot of these errors that have come up. What caused this and what can I do to make sure this doesn't happen again?

    Hi sdhammond,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The first thing I would suggest is to repair permissions for the iBooks app on your Macbook Pro.
Troubleshooting permissions issues in Mac OS X
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963
This is a summary of the information provided in this article specific to your situation:
Using the Finder application, open the Applications folder
Right Click or Control Click on the iBooks app.
Choose "Get Info" from the contextual menu.
Look at the Sharing & Permissions section of this window.
(You may need to click on the padlock icon and type in your computer administrator password).
Under Administrators in the Sharing & Permissions section, you should see your name.
Change permissions to Read & Write for account.
    Click OK
If repairing permissions does not resolve your issue, here's how to delete the iBooks app and reinstall it from the Mac App Store:
    Troubleshooting the Mac App Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3624
    Open the Finder.
Choose Applications from the Go menu.
Locate your app in the Applications folder.
Delete the app that will not open (drag iBooks to the trashcan icon on the dock).
    Open the Mac App Store.
Ensure that you are logged in to the Mac App Store with the same account that purchased the app.
Select the Purchases view from the top of the Mac App Store window.
Find the app and click the Install button beside it.
The app will be installed on the Mac you are using.
    Cheers,
    Judy

  • Permissions differ after installing SSD

I recently installed a 512gb Samsung 830 series SSD into my Early 2011 13in Macbook Pro. Prior to this, I have verified disk permissions multiple times and never had any permissions differ.
Since I've installed this SSD, I've run disk permissions several times and there is usually at least a couple permissions that differ. I repair them of course, but my question is how serious could this be?
Overall, I'm happy with the performance of the drive and I haven't had any problems besides the permissions differing.
Any suggestions to fix this? And is it a serious issue? If it is, I'd like to return the drive when I still can.
    Thanks for your help.

No problem, Apple has changed things in OS X and thus certain permissions will also appear to be repaired.
