Permissions in libraries

I am using SharePoint 2010. I have design permissions to a library. I have entered my password to the memory of my browser.
But each time I try to open a document in the library, it requires me to enter user name and password (for every single document).
I have been using "internet explorer", "firefox" and "Google Chrome" as my browsers.
What should I do, so it will not require me to enter name and password each time?

• Flash not working for one user, but not another on this CPU

Hi,
For user A on my computer most video will play in Safari, Firefox, and Chrome. But video at nfl.com will not play. The ads will play but not the actual feature.
I just found out that the videos on nfl.com will work for user B. I have rerun the Adobe Flash 10.1 installer in user A's account several times with no luck.
Are there permissions or libraries I should trash to try to restore this capability?
thanks,
Steve

HI,
For user A on my computer
Try uninstalling the current copy of Flash, reinstall new, then repair permissions.
Uninstall Flash
Install the most recent version of Flash here.
Now repair permissions.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
You may also need to delete the Flash cache. Instructions here.

If that doesn't help, install the v10.6.4 Combo Update It's ok to do this even though you are already running v10.6.4.

• Yosemite Photos App Shared Library

Just downloaded 10.10.3 and am migrating to Photos. On iPhoto I used to have the iPhoto library in the Shared folder, and all logins pointed to that library when they opened iPhoto in their own account.
Then Apple stopped this, and I went through lots and lots of pain until I realised this, with broken permissions, rebuilding libraries, recovered photos and the like.
Now Photos is here, I would like to be able to share one library across all our accounts. This would mean that all our photos were in one place, but our own photo streams would be visible when we logged in to our account, and when we wanted to share photos to Facebook, Twitter, etc, it would do it to our own accounts linked to our login.
Does anyone know if Apple has enabled this again, or whether it is still blocked?

I have not seen any indication, that sharing the Photo Library on a Mac in a shared folder has been brought back.
The Sharing options for Photos are pretty much the same as for iPhoto and based on Shared albums.
See the Photos Help page:  https://help.apple.com/photos/mac/1.0/?lang=en#/
And look at the section "Share your photos and videos".
To share your Photos library on the Mac, use the same cumbersome procedure as before with a sneaker drive: iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users

• Reinstalling OS X 10.6.8 and Migrating Data

My MacBook Pro's HD is running very low on space (<10GB). I don't have any money to upgrade to a bigger HD and now my apps (e.g. iPhoto '11 & Aperture 3) are starting to not work properly. I've repaired both permissions and libraries for each via Disk Utility and holiding down alt + cmd when starting each app. iPhoto crashes while importing a photo and Aperture gets stuck loading assets. This only happens, however, when I use my main personal account on my laptop. When trying it through my Guest Account the problems do not occur.
Does anyone know why this is happening and if there is a fix to this?
I took it to the Apple Store and after running a few tests, I was told that the best thing for me to do would be to create a new account and then transfer things over.
I've tried reinstalling iPhoto but to no avail. With Aperture 3, I have my serial number but I lost my disc when I moved into my new apartment. I have all my stuff backed up on Time Machine and I even have a clone of my HD via SuperDuper! disk cloner. My concern is that my iPhoto & Aperture backups are also corrupted.
Ultimately, if I can't figure out why this is happening, I feel that my only solution would be to reinstall OS X and start with a fresh slate.
Can anyone suggest any alternative methods or solutions that I may not have tried?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

You need to do some serious house cleaning by dumping stuff you no longer need and/or want.
Empty the trash!
Open up your application folder & go through all your apps.  Trash all the apps you no longer want and/or use.
An easier way to do this is to open the Application folder in list view & press the Command+j keys.
In the the dialog that appears, click the "This Window Only" button & the "Calculate All Sizes" check box. Wait a bit until your file & folder sizes have all been calculated, then click the "Size" column to sort your apps from the fattest to the most anorexic.
Get rid of all your photo files you don't want and/or need.  Same goes for those pics off the websites you downloaded (gifs, jpegs, etc.).
Get rid of all your music files you no longer listen too.  Especially, if you already have the actual CDs and/or DVDs or you can later redownload from a website.
Use Spotlight to make sure you got rid of everything.  You can even trash directly from Spotlight!
Drag what you don't want and/or need to the trash.  Better yet, download this neat little shareware app *demo* called AppZapper.  It basically does all the work for you by not only trashing the apps but the apps preference files, caches & all its associated files.
Another software that does the above is AppDelete.  Best of all this software is *free*!
Burn what you want and/or need onto CDs or DVDs.
Not everyone has the  luxury of purchasing an external HD and/or a .Mac account to store their "stuff, junk, music & photos".
You can check with your ISP to see if they offer *free* storage space.  Most if not all do now-a-days.  I store all 5000+ of my music (mp3s) files & 500+ music videos in my ISP storage bin. There are thousands if not millions of *free* storage facilities on the web also.  Use your favorite search engine, Google &/or MacGoogle to search them out as they come in different storage sizes to fit your needs & wants.
Check for duplicate fonts.
Applications>Font Book
Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + *click* to select multiple dotted fonts;
Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts.  Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
Clear out font caches
Use http://www.jamapi.com/pr/fnFontNuke.  It does all the work for you.  And, best of all it’s *FREE*.
Printer Drivers
Get rid of all the printer drivers you don’t need & use except the ones for your *current* printer(s)/scanner(s).
HD>Library>Printers Folder
If you accidently threw something out that you needed for your printer/scanner it can be easily obtained from the manufacturer’s website and/or from the CD that came w/the printer/scanner.
Garage Band
Has about 1GB of loops stored.  Get rid of some some them.  You surely don’t use, like and/or need them all.
HD>Library>Audio/Apple Loops>Apple>Apple Loops For GarageBand
Or just get rid of the Garage Band app altogether if you don’t use it.
Get rid of extra languages
Strip your computer down to your “native” tongue. You can do this with a *FREE* utility called http://monolingual.sourceforge.netMonolingual.  Another app that apparently does all the work for you.  I’ve never used it.  However, a lot of users here swear by & recommend it highly. However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*.  Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).

• Report on Sites, Lists and Libraries with Unique Permissions

I would like to get a report on Sites, Pages, Lists, Libraries, Items and Documents under a Site Collection having Unique Permissions. What is the best way to accomplish that ?

Finally catch your meaning. In SharePoint 2010, uniquely secured objects can be displayed on the permission settings page of the parent object(see my screenshots here
http://cid-6f40fb61d28cf147.office.live.com/view.aspx/Technology/UniquePermission.docx
). And as you may already know, it seems only show inheritance broken within a site. I found it does not show unique permission of sub sites in a site collection.
You may want something like a Broken Inheritance Report Jobs in SharePoint Administration Toolkit for SharePoint 2007 (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sharepoint/archive/2009/08/27/announcing-the-fourth-release-of-the-microsoft-sharepoint-administration-toolkit.aspx
). However, I had not found it in SharePoint Administration toolkit for SharePoint 2010.
If you are currently in need of this kind of reports, you may try third party tools such as that from the Lightingtools(I am not familiar with it and don’t know
if it will meet your requirement).
Or you can back up the content database from and restore it to test environment to query. With the help of SQL Server profiler, I found that the stored procedure proc_SecChangeToUniqueScope(http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd358095(PROT.13).aspx
) is called when you break permission inheritance. You can find more information around this store procedure by searching:
http://www.bing.com/search?q=site%3Amsdn.microsoft.com+proc_SecChangeToUniqueScope
And you can make use of database comparison tools such as that from the visual studio 2010 premium/ultimate to compare the content database before and after the site
permission inheritance is broken to learn what tables to query (of cause, you should do all this in test environment).

• HT4736 Taking too long (2 minutes) to locate and download photos into Photo '11 9.5 (902.7 build running on an older Intel based MacBook Pro with iPhoto libraries on a USB2 External HD).  I checked and repaired HD permissions. Any ideas?

Regarding iPhoto '11 9.5 (902.7 build running on an older Intel based MacBook Pro with iPhoto libraries on a USB2 External HD).  I am dealing with iPhoto taking too long to download photos.  Specifically, I rechecked and repaired HD permissions. I am running the most current software my five year old Intel MacBook Pro can run.   What happens is that when I connect an external SD card, or my iPhone, the new version of iPhoto takes up to two full minutes to fully acknowledge the device. Then locate new photos and be ready to download them to my external HD.  I am kind of concerned about this.  This has never happened before.
I take 20,000 photos a year.  I really don't want to lose any.  Or is there something I am doing wrong?  Or need to be aware of?  Any experienced suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks.  Have a great day.
PS.... The cameras I use are Canon SX-30, Nikon D3100, and my iPhone 4S.  Thanks again for your assistance.

Hello Old Toad.... Those sound like great ideas.
I thought I checked and repaired disk permissions on my main boot HD.  That boot disk is Mac OS Extended (Journaled)  Capacity 749.3 GB.  Available 562.53 GB.   BUT.... now that I think of it.... the Seagate external HD with USB2 interface is: Mac OS Extended (Journaled), Capacity 639.79 GB, Available 36.2 GB with my latest iPhoto Library 517.37 GB that was already scanned & updated to be read by the latest iPhoto version.
I'll try your suggestions tonight as far as double checking 'permissions' and setting up a tiny test library.
Or maybe it's time to fill up another External HD?
I appreciate your and anyone else's suggestions to try.
Have a great day. ~~ David in Rochester NY

• Permissions issue: An error occurred while trying to save your photo librar

I recently upgraded from a Mac mini running OS X 10.4.10 (iPhoto 08) to an iMac Core2Duo (2.4ghz) running Leopard (and also iPhoto 08).
My iPhoto library resided on an external Firewire drive when running on the Mac mini, but now that the iMac has such a large hard disk (750gb), I wanted to move my library there. I copied the library over to the Pictures folder in my user folder on the iMac and started up iPhoto, and everything seemed fine.
When iPhoto is running for any length of time, I get the following error:
*An error occurred while trying to save your photo library.*
*Some recent changes may be lost. Make sure your hard disk has enough space and that iPhoto is able to access the iPhoto Library.*
(I have over 300gb available on the disk and my library folder is approximately 40gb.)
I've repaired the permissions on the library using iPhoto's built-in mechanism (command-option while booting iPhoto) and Disk Utility. Additionally, I've used BatchMod to give my user and group full read/write/delete permissions (as posted elsewhere in the forums), but I still get the error.
Searching the forums yields other users w/ the same issues. What's the scoop? TIA!

Sean:
I just had the very same problem when I was messing with permissions and reset my unknown group to staff. I lost all write permissions in my nome folder. Here's how you can reset it for your pictures folder:
In the Terminal type in "sudo chmod -R -N " (there's a space after the N) and drag the Pictures folder into the Terminal window. Then hit the enter key. It should chug along for a couple of seconds and return a new prompt. Give iPhoto another try after that.
I had to do that for my entire home folder and it fixed the problem.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

• I Photo Libraries on ext HD won't upgrade, permissions 'cannot be repaired'

I've copied several I Photo Libraries to external HD over the years.  Upgraded to Lion, now some libraries won't upgrade and permissions 'cannot be repaired' how do I access these photos/videos?

We need to know the format. Is it a NAS? FAT or NTSC? Mac OS Extended (Journaled)? Any but the last of these will cause you issues.

• Permissions on Aperture Libraries

Before the upgrade to 2.0/2.0.1/2/1 I had no trouble switching between 2 libraries, under different profiles. Now I get an permissions error an the other library doesn't open. This 2nd library is under a different user profile on the same computer and my profile has read/write access to both the folder and the library package just as it did before the upgrade. Any clues as to what is different from 1.5.x to 2.x?

Nice name
Why do you have the two libraries under different usernames? It'd be a lot easier if you used the same name (yours) for both of them.
You can just do a chown -R <username> on the library that's giving you issues.
I don't think this is an Aperture 1.5 versus 2.0 thing. I think it's a UNIX permissions thing that started to go awry about the time you upgraded.

• How do people in Designers group provide permissions after creating list/libraries?

We've always kept our SharePoint intranet pretty locked down, such that only those in an Owner's group can create lists and libraries.  We decided to utilize the Designer group to allow a select handful of people to be able to create lists and libraries
(without making them owners of the site).  How do these "designers" apply permissions?  It doesn't appear that they can under the library settings.
There are no mistakes; every result tells you something of value about what you are trying to accomplish.

Oh I see. But if a user create a Library then user is the own of library and can assign the permission. when you click on the List / library settings on that page under the "Permissions and Management " can
you see the link "Permissions for this document library".
could you please share the screen print.
Also check the permission of the user on that Library.

• Valid users can see a site, but not the document libraries they have permissions for

Hello everybody,
at a customer's site, there is SharePoint Foundation 2013 SP1 running, bound to both http and https. Seeminlgy out of nothing, a strange behavior occurred: Visting
http://intranet/subsite showed the page headers (logo, global navigation etc.), but no content. The welcome text was missing as well as the links to the document libraries which should appear in the left navigation.
After explicitely adding http://intranet as an alternate name (https://intranet was active only, don't know why), we can again reach content via http. Still strange appears, that
http://intranet global navigation links get redirected to https (fine, but unexpected). If we change a deep link to a document library from https to http in the browser's address bar, we can reach the content fine.
However, one problem still exists: This site gets published via TMG 2010 via https, and that also worked just fine for many months. But now, I can try what I want in TMG, valid authenticated users see only the top navigation, but no content at all.
Can anyone give me a hint about what to check? Of course, I will provide any info you may need.
Best Regards, Stefan Falk

Hello Daniel,
Thank you for your response. As to your questions:
I just added http://intranet to the alternate access mappings of the intranet zone and did not extend a website.
Besides SharePoint Central Administration, there is no other SharePoint web site collection on this server, and no other non-SharePoint-IIS-Site. This is a VM for nothing else than hosting this single intranet site collection.
We do see the same issue under two sub-websites underneath
http://intranet, namely http://intranet/Datenaustausch and
http://intranet/Protokolle. In both sub-sites, there is some welcome text on the home page and there are several document libraries, each with permissions not interited, but explicitely granted to specific users.
The first (solved) issue was, that we could not see the document libraries when using http, but could see them using https. This was solved by adding the alternate access mapping for
http://intranet explicitely.
We can successfully browse the sites (using http and https now) from the internal network. The one issue left is that the same does not work through TMG, that is, coming from the external network, we can see and call up the sites in a browser, but not any
content in them. We do see the site title and logo, and the global navigation at the top of the page, but we do not see the welcome text, nor the document libraries. This did work last week, and we do not know nor could find, why it stopped working. The issue
persists regardless of whether we use bridging to https or to http between TMG and SharePoint.
We have already restarted the SharePoint box, with no success.
If I can provide any further information needed, I will be glad to do so.
Best Regards, Stefan Falk

• HT203176 my computer hangs frequently - rolling beach ball - apparently some endless loops - I have repaired the permissions countless times but the problem continues - the faulty permissions include java virtual machine and language libraries

I get the rolling beach ball frequently when using a browser -I have repaired the permissions a number of times - each time I do this - the same issues show up-  language libraries, java virtual machine etc - after a restart the btowser works for awhile and then hangs again - i trashed both Chrome and Firefox and am now using Safari and Opera - neither of which work very fast and I still get a frozen screen - rolling beach ball - have to force quit.On the activity monitor it shows that the  browser I am using has several hangs.
Aside from reinstalling everything - is  there a fix for this?

Those Permissions errrors will keep appearing. They are not errors; ignore them. Your problem has nothing to do with Permissions repair. Many possible causes, one of which may be A-V. Do you have any A-V installed?
What does Disk Utility show for SMART Status for the drive? Verify the Disk.
Open Activity Monitor>CPU tab. Anything hogging the CPU when the slowdowns occur? Switch to the Memory tab. What does it show for free and inactive? Also, Page ins, Page outs and Swap used?'
How many applications open concurrently when this happens?
How much drive free space? You should maintain at least around 20-30GB.

• Restoring permissions to a site and document libraries

We have SharePoint sites (SPWeb) with unique permissions (permissions inheritance broken).  Each site has several document libraries in it.  The document libraries also have their permissions inheritance broken.  Users are assigned to
a custom permissions level at the document library level and at the same time they are given Limited Access permission level at the site level.  Apparently, one of the document libraries was still inheriting permissions.  A customer with site
admin rights was trying to remove some user permissions for the document library that was still inheriting permissions.  Because the permissions were still being inherited, they were taken to the parent site permissions page.  They selected most
of the accounts and clicked Remove.  They thought they were removing permissions for that document library but instead they removed permissions at the site level which means that they removed permissions to all document libraries for these accounts.
My question is: I have a content database backup from last night.  I also have a full farm backup (done via Central Admin) from a month or two ago.  Is there any way to restore those permissions ( to the site and document libraries) from one
of these backups?  I cannot restore the whole site collection because the other sites in this site collection are not affected by this.  I can only restore an SPWeb object.  However, is my understanding correct that restoring the SPWeb is only
going to restore the content and not the permissions?  Is there any other way to restore users permissions at the site and document library level from the two backups I have?
thanks,

I do not think its possible to restore permissions only.
You have to restore another site from backup and then map user permissions in all document libraries. If possible then develop a custom control which will check user permission on restored site and apply it on the production site.

• Controlling permissions on files within Document Libraries

We're using a document library with a workflow that automates all the handling for internal documents.
One of the requierements for this system is that documents have to be only visible to certain people depending on the stage of the process that the docoment's in, I almost accomplished this by changing each element permissions using a 2010 Workflow, but
there's a problem: Whenever a user uploads a new document, Sharepoint automatically locks it for edition, so the workflow can't change permissions as the file is uploaded, thus leaving the files visible for everyone in the system.
Is there any way in which I can set the default permision so that only the user who uploaded the file can see it? This way only that user could see the file while the workflow can get access to it and set the proper permissions.
Also, any other approach to this problem would be highly appreciated.
Thanks!

I'm not usually a fan of this approach, but have you tried moving the document among several appropriately permission restricted locations, corresponding to each step in the process?  Would that be an option?
