'Permissions' issues trying to restore
Trying to restore a directory - TM fails with the message 'You don't have permission to access <x>'
It constructs the folders and the sub-folders. Just no files...
Is there a resource on this?
Not seeing much there - a search for 'permissions' yields folks are having the same problems, but they seem to be related to an application-specific directory.
This is just a plain old folder, nothing special. I've owned the folder forever, backups seem to be going just fine, but I can't restore.
TM seemed to work better under Leopard. I've had nothing but troubles with it since I went to Snow Leopard.
Think I'll just go back to rsync. I know it works. And I know how to restore.

After reinstall, permissions issues even though they say read-write for owner
So I spent all day yesterday rebuilding my system after a power surge from a tripped breaker fried my old hard drive (so much for surge protectors).
Now when I try to register a software plug in, I get an error saying "Access denied. Please check permissions on /Library/Preferences/ [the software in question, it doesn't matter]".
And then, with Safari, when I try to access any website that requires Java applets, I get an error saying that the applet won't load properly, even though I've updated to the most recent version of Java. I'm pretty sure this is because the Java applets are not being allowed to write data to my /Library/Preferences/ folder (or maybe just any folder in the /Library/ folder).
When I run Disk Utility and repair permissions, I'm getting the exact same messages every single time, so even though it's saying the permissions are getting repaired, clearly it's not saving those repairs.
I'm 99% sure that this is a permissions issue following the restore from a previous Time Machine save -- I've seen this before and found a fix involving Terminal commands, but I can't for the life of me find the fix anymore.
I have temporary workarounds for the moment (though it's kind of a pain to have to re-register this software every single time I open the application, and I can have co-workers access the websites that require the Java applets to work, but that's inconvenient for all around), so it's not a pressing issue, but any help tracking down what Terminal commands I should use to solve this issue will be greatly appreciated.Found the solution...basically the permissions are not automatically cascaded down to sub folders and files so you have to do the following... modified from https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2743520?start=0&tstart=0
On the folder that you would like to change, select the Get Info and then click on the cogwheel at the bottom of the Get Info dialog.
Click on the menu pick "Apply to enclosed items ..." and confirm the warning message.
Then the same read & write permissions are applied to all the subfolders of the selected folder. -
One day when tried to restart my iphone 4, I got a screen asking me to connect to itunes. Itunes asked me to restore my phone. When I tried to restore, I got an Error 23 saying it cannot be restored. I tried the phone support. They asked to contact the service centre. I then tried the service centre guys. They clearly did not know what Error 23 was. They asked to contact the apple support again. After 2-3 guys tried to blow me off saying it is a hardware issue, I asked for a senior analyst. Apple support assigned a senior guy who said he will contact the engineering team. After 2 days, I was told that the engineering team has confirmed that this is a hardware issue.
What I am surprised about is that no one seems to have done any analysis or debugging to figure this out. How do they decide that this is a hardware issue?
The first time I tried it from my laptop and got this message. The support guy told me that my laptop may have an antivirus software which may be causing this issue. So I took it to the service centre. They tried the same restore from their machine and got the exact same error.
The senior analyst that was later assigned to my case, again asked me to restore from my machine. I got the same error.
Basically what they had verified in all these activities was that I was getting error 23. I dont know how they decided that this was due to hardware issues?
Online documentation on Error 23 is vague. It is bunched long with other error codes. There is no clear explanation of what Error 23 is.
But most importantly It says 'In rare cases, this may be a hardware issue'.
So if it is a hardware issue in rare case, how was my case deemed to be a 'rare case'?
When I asked them to escalate this, they said that there is no way to escalate.
I have had a horrible experience with Apple support. Till this point I used to think of Apple as a class apart. But now I am totally disillusioned.
My phone was about a year and a half old. I dont mind it if it actually turns out to be a hardware issue. I will take it as my bad luck.
But I dont see how the support guys decided that this is a hardware issue. I need to know.
And secondly I am shocked that Apple has no escalation path.

You sound like an Apple support guy who hasn't been able to answer my questions.
To respond to some of the points you made,
- I did not ignore Ocean20's suggestion. If you has read my post, you would have known that I took my phone to the apple service centre where they tried this restore on THEIR machines. I am assuming that Apple guys know how not to block iTunes. So I actually do not understand your point about me trying the hosts file changes on my machine. Do you not believe that apple tested this issue with the correct settings?
- you also give a flawed logic of why the issue is a hardware issue. You mentioned that If I thought that the issue was with the software, i should try a restore and getting it to work. The problem is that my error (23), and many others comes up when the restore fails. And you would be astonished to know that not all errors are hardware errors. Sometimes even software errors prevent restores. Funnily enough Apple itself mention that 'in rare cases, error 23 could be hardware related'.
- all Apple has done so far is replicate the issue. I don not know how anyone can conclude that the issue is a hardware issue.
And by the way, I am not certain that this is a software bug. Again if you read my Posts, you will notice I only want a confirmation,/proof that the issue is hardware related as they mention..

I updated my Iphone 4s to IOS 7, now it reboots after every 2 minutes, I tried to restore, but the reboot gets it disconnected from PC, help me solve this reboot issue..

So i have an HP e118dx running on windows 8.1 with very little software on it. Currently running FF 37.0.1 and in wireless mode it always hangs up, runs slow, or times out. When plugged in it runs just fine. Can get on net using IE via wireless and no issues. So it seems to be something specific to FF on the wireless side. Thought it might have been my wireless card but running IE just fine seems to rule that out.
Have already tried system restore a few times, factory reset, turn off hardware accel., run in safe mode(FF), disabled add ons and nothing seems to help. If i have tabs open while wired, then go wireless and refresh the pages or browse on the already open pages i tend to get a couple minutes of trouble free experience before it slows to a halt again.
To recap....FF on wireless=slow and wired=fast. No difference when using IE wireless---always fast.Not sure what you mean by # of connections being made. Not sure if that means tabs open, or folks using the actual wireless network. A while back when i was going through this with the isp i got a crash coarse on how to go into the modem and check a bunch of different stuff, as well as reset things. When looking in there only 1 or 2 computers showed on the network. The network is password protected......i guess protected only to the extent that a pswrd can. Not certain if someone nefariously connected somehow.....didn't show up when looking for users on the network though.
The first bullet point......Not sure how to do any of that so i'd say no.
Second bullet point......Yes, did lots of clearing temp files, caches, history, etc. along with systems restores and factory resets. although not exactly sure what you mean by dns cache. Might have done this but don't recall specifically seeing that.
Third bullet point.....It doesn't make any difference on this end whether its on no proxy, auto proxy, manual proxy. While i have no idea what all this stuff does/affects performance i played with it on all different settings and nothing changed here. Put it back to no proxy.
The thing is even when my wireless FF is acting up other devices in the home can be on the wireless with no issues. Think the other devices are using Chrome and some phone wifi hookup. Keep in mind if i switch to IE on the same device with FF windows open the IE will run just fine. At any given time there should only be 1-4 devices on the network so i'm guessing that shouldn't overload anything. Besides none of the other devices ever seem to come into this issue.
There always seems to be some issue that pops up after updates. Can't ever just leave working things alone. -

I tried to use the Browse button on the left pane to go to a server which has my local copy so that I can FTP to ISP, but I get a window saying there is a permissions issue. How do I resolve?
If it has a cloud icon it means its no longer on your device. Tapping on the cloud will effectively reinstall the App from scratch to your device.
There is no way to remove it from the cloud because its not yours to remove from there. Its the general App repository, you are just given access to it to download content you've already purchased. -
I am trying to restore my iphone 4 ios 6 to acheive unlock. hit restore and it unloads software, confirms with apple then displays the 3194 error. I have turned off my virus scanner, unplugged all usb except for iphone, edited the hosts file and run diagnostics which showes communication with apple is fine. There is nothing wrong with the OS update.
Delete ALL your email accounts.
Restart Playbook
Put the accounts back and ensure they are all set with PUSH ON. Manual (push off) will burn battery.
Similarly delete your wifi connections and add back when required.
Turn off wifi is not connected to wifi.
Any "hunting for connection" in email or wifi will burn up battery. -
i keep trying to restore my iphone 4s as there is some lag so i need to install 5.1.1 but it keeps telling me servers are temperarily down. according to me it permanent what can i do to fix this issue
Either your security software is blocking access to Apple's servers, or your computer was used at some time in the past to hack or jailbreak some iDevice (not necessarily the phone you are restoring), and your computer's network database has been corrupted. If you know this is the case edit your "hosts" file and remove all lines containing "gs.apple.com". If you are sure it is not the case temporarily disable your antivirus and firewall.

My iPhone 4 crashes very often (3-4 times per day) and sometimes (2-3 times per month) all my apps disappear and I have to restore them with iTunes. I downloaded all the system updatings and I also tried to restore my device, but I still have this issue
If you haven't already, try restoring your iPhone as a new device, not from a backup, and with only the apps Apple includes. Then see if the problems persist. It's possible that a corrupted file on the iPhone is causing the problems, and that could perhaps be coming back onto the iPhone if you're restoring using a backup. Problems with an app could also be causing problems. If the problems persist after restoring the iPhone as "new", then you almost certainly have a defective iPhone and will need to contact Apple for servicing.
If the problems go away after restoring the iPhone as "new", then you can start putting your other apps back on and see if the problems reappear; if they do, you probably have a badly-coded app.

Hello, Hope someone can help. I am trying to restore a backup of my Xperia Z and SBfM keeps saying my memory is full. But my phone has been reset – the memory should be close to empty. It's like SBfM can't recognise the reset. I have made a copy of my logs which Fredrik on this forum suggested I do, but I don't know how to PM them to him, and I accidentally marked my last post as solved. Yep, am doing very well here!!! The problem I'm encountering is on an iMac 24" from 2008, Intel Core 2Duo 1.3 GHz processor. I'm running 10.7.3 but have yet to install the client combo update.
My computer would not wake from sleep this morning after having been left on all night. The last two apps I had been running last night before this morning's freeze up were Google Chrome and iTunes. I restarted the computer and noticed at the login screen that one of the login accounts that is normally set up for use had disappeared. Once I logged in to my account, which had not disappeared, and arrived at the desktop, Chrome automatically tried to relaunch and restore the previous session with a note indicating that the browser had not been quit properly.
iTunes was running as well but had no functionality - non responsive to mouse click commands, etc. About thirty seconds later the rainbow wheel appeared and began spinning.
Tried force quitting both applications applications respectively but the finder was non-responsive as well. The dock would pop up when moused over but I was not permitted to select any of the icons. Restarted the computer and essentially the same thing occurred but I was able to quit out of iTunes this time before the rainbow wheel started.
Tried restarting with all peripheral hardware disconnected. No change. Tried booting up in safe mode - didn't work. Rebooted in disk utility mode - ran disk verification and was told all was well. Ran permissions verifications and was told there were problems. Repaired the permissions issues successfully. Rebooted again but same issue with desktop/apps freezing up. Rebooted into Disk Utility mode and tried a reinstall of lion - reinstall successul but upon normal reboot desktop still frozen once I launched Chrome and attempted to get to apple site to download the 10.7.3 patch.
Tried rebooting in disk utility mode to restore from a time machine back up - the external hard drive where my back ups are stored did not appear as a restore source even though I had reconnected the USB cable.
I then rebooted again into disk utility mode and tried to use safari to navigate to the apple site and download the 10.7.3 client combo update. No dice - received error messages saying the download could not be completed because there was insufficient memory available.
Called Apple - rep said I should take the computer in to the store - refused as of the time of the call because I had already wasted half the day on this and didn't want to flush the remainder down the toilet hanging around at the Apple store. So much for that - the day is now totally wasted any way.
Another couple of bits of information which may or may not be helpful:
When I'm in disk utility mode the disk image icon at the top of the list of disk images/mounts on the left hand side of the utility window is in red text: 320.07 GB WDC WD320...and the main dialogue box says: "This drive has a hardware problem that can't be repaired. Back up Data and see Apple dealer for help." One might conclude that my computer is therefore dead...not exactly. This happened once before after trying to set up a bootcamp partition using XP instead of windows 7. XP is not supported by Lion but I was trying a work around. Soon thereafter I upgraded my OS to 10.7.2 (or.3 can't remember) using software updater instead of a full native download from the Apple Support site and the computer went bananas. After the upgrade I was getting the CUI ???? errors which have since become infamous. While working with Apple phone support on the CUI issue and using disk utility on that issue, that same red text disc image came up and the note about my hardware having failed as described above. Apple told me I was cooked and my machine was finished. They were wrong. I can't remember what I did but I worked on the problem a bit more and was eventually able to upgrade my OS from the native download and get my machine back in order and runnign fine.
I recently attempted the bootcamp partition (stupidly) work around for XP again without success - last week before all of the latest drama set in. YES I have learned my lession and will not attempt this again.
So that's what's going on - sorry for the Moby Dick lenght description but I figured the more details available the more likely some one is to know how to fix the problem.
Any thoughts, suggestions, HELP please!!!
