Permissions locked on external drive when networked. But now when local.

Here's my problem. Running the iTunes library from an external drive, and it's been running fine for months and months on the home network. Just bought a new aluminum iMac and suddenly permissions on the disk are screwed up. When the ext. disk is plugged into the new iMac permissions are fine, read and write. When plugged into AEBS there are only two entries under permissions: (unknown) which has read and write permissions, and 'everyone' which shows 'no access'.
Can someone suggest a way to change the permissions that a networked drive has as opposed to a non networked drive, and why is there a difference:
Thanks.

why is there a difference:
Leopard uses ACLs which which replaced posix permissions. ACL's are extendable.
POSIX permissions if they were applied to an external drive they are ignored when disconnected from the computer that set them when plugged into another device.
ACL's extendable so they are not lost when the drive is plugged into another device.
If you want more detailed information on this google for ACLs vs POSIX.
So your drive was plugged into your new iMac, the iMac applied ACL permission to it. So it messed with its original permissions.
Try plugging the drive back into the new imac give everybody in the permission read/write access, Then plug the drive back into your AEBS.

How do I prevent itunes from moving my music from its original place ie folders in an external drive when I play music from itunes. I have all my music in artist folders and separated by MPG3/MPG4 and FLAC folders within the artist folder and itunes moves the track/s whenever i try and load selected music to my ipod/iphone. I've tried to find some sort of preference to prevent this, but no joy? What am I missing?

Try opening iTunes preferences. Then click on advanced tab. Then uncheck "Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library." By default, iTunes copies music to its own media folder when you use iTunes to play the music.

  • How do you boot from an external drive when internal drive is dead?

The internal drive is dead, but I have a complete dupolicate on my fire-wire external drive. I think I remember reading that there is a combination of keys to press down when starting to allow one to choose which drive to use as a startup volume. As it is, the thing won't start up at all.
So I know it's supposed to run from the external drive, but how do you get it to boot from it without having designated it as the startup when it was last running?

Hold down the Option key when booting the computer.
When I asked the question I was working on my daughter's ibook.
Now I'm back home and I have a firewall external drive, so I tried pressing option when I started and icons for startup drive come up BUT there is only one icon -- that being for my internal drive. I know that the external drive, which has a duplicate of the internal, is capable of starting it up ok, because when I go ahead and , after starting it up on the internal drive, then pick the external drive to start and then restart it, it goes to the external drive ok. But again, if it has been preferrenced to start on the internal drive and I do the thing by pressing with option when I start, it doesn't give me the option to use the external drive. (The external drive is partioned, and the duplicate startup is in one of the volumes, but I don't think this should have anything to do with anything, since it can start up using the appropriate external hard drive volume when I have selected it in my preferences.)

I have just installed Photoshop Elements for a MAC. MY photos were in iPhoto, I have 47,000 pictures and my drive on my Mac laptop is not large enough. I store my photos in iPhoto on an external drive. Can I store all my photos on an external drive when using Photoshop Elements? If so, in what format should they be stored in? I do I move them from iPhoto to the new storage location? How do I call them up in organizer? And how do I call them up to Edit? I do not want to store any pictures on my Apple Mac laptop. I want to store pictures on several external devices.

Yes you can store images on an external hard dive and have them referenced in Organizer. It’s best to export copies to separate folders/subfolders and that will ensure iPhoto does not get corrupted.
Alternatively you could continue to use iPhoto with the Elements Editor set up in the iPhoto prefs as your external editing app. Then there is no need to use Organizer and no need to duplicate your images.
You can then call up photos directly from iPhoto as normal with the additional option e.g.
Double-click on a thumbnail to edit in iPhoto editor.
Control (right) - click on a thumbnail to edit in the elements app.

Do you have a TM backup or a clone? If so, erase the drive and restore with TM or clone back.
If not you'll have to reformat and re-install the OS that shipped with your Mac. If it shipped with Lion or ML you can do the restore from your Recovery Volume
EDIT: I assume you are saying that you just installed 10.8?

It's not clear whether you were able to do any backups to this drive at all.  If not, it's probably not formatted properly.  See #5 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for instructions.
If you did get any successful backups, there may be a problem with the drive, or the backups may be corrupted.  Try to repair the backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • Cannot mount external drive on network when no user logged in

We have a few workstations on our network that have multiple accounts for users in order to preserve preferences, etc. An external hard drive attached to the each workstation, holds work done on that station by the different users. When all users are logged out, the external drive does not appear as a mountable device when trying to log into the workstation from another computer; only the internal drives are seen and mountable.
Is there a way to make the external drive visible and available for mounting over the network when no user is logged in? The external drive is set to ignore permissions for that drive in the get info window.
Additionally, when a user is logged in to the workstation and someone tries to log in over the network to access the external drive, the drive is sometimes available over the network and other times not. What causes this inconsistency?

(On IntelMac the Drive it needs the GUID Partitioning scheme mentioned at the bottom.)

  • How to unlock a locked folder on external drive when locked checkbox greyed out

I use an external hard drive for Time Machine backups and to store some larger video files in a folder called Videos.  The Videos folder on the external drive is now locked and I can't unlock it.  I go to Get Info, hit the lock icon and enter my password, but the "Locked" checkbox is greyed out in the General section.  In the Sharing and Permissions section, instead of displaying my name, it says "Fetching . . ." and I can't change the Privilege from "Write Only".
Anybody know what's causing this or how to fix it?

  • How do I repair a damaged time machine backup drive/remove pictures from library on locked/failing external drive

I have a WD 1TB external hard drive that I use as my time machine backup drive as well as to store a number of things including my iphoto library (due to its size of about 85 GB) as well as documents. I began using the WD 1TB external drive with my 2007 13" MacBook and when I purchased a brand new 13" MacBook Pro in 2013 I used the WD to transfer what I wanted to the new laptop. My new MacBook Pro is running OSX 10.8.4 (2.9 GHz Interl Core i7 with 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3) (not the retina display). The WD 1TB product # is WDBACX001... and it's only about one year old so I'm super bummed that it's failing and trying to take my life with it It has only ever been used with my two MacBooks, never with a PC.
The external WD was working fine until this week when I noticed that it wasn't appearing on my desktop. I rebooted, unplugged and replugged the WD drive in each USB portal, and still nothing. I ran Disk Utility to verify and repair the disk, which did force it to show up on the desktop again, though it made everything painfully slow. After running the repair function Disk Utility told me that the drive couldn't be repaired, and that I should backup whatever is on it and restore the WD drive. I managed to pull off most of the documents before it decided to freeze up my laptop (I had a couple of folders with a few documents each left), but I wasn't able to move the iphoto library over before the drive disappeared again. I got it back by running the repair option in disk utility, with the same message that the WD drive is failing and to back it up, and tried to move the iphoto library. It told me it would take 180+ days, and kept going up. I left it up anyway for about a day to see if it would change, and instead it gave an error message, and moved nothing. I can't open the library in iPhoto- it tells me it's on a locked disk. I checked the permissions and it's set to Read & write by me (the admin user) but then under that it says read only for "everyone." I can't get into the library to pull out my pictures, which I cannot afford to lose.
I would appreciate any help or advice on how to crack into my iphoto library on this failing drive to remove the pictures. I read a lot about DiskWarrior but I also read that it won't work on newer macs (anything after June of 2012 supposedly), so I'm wondering if that's true or not, and if not is that a good program to use?
I can't afford to take it to a professional right now, so any help or advice would be so greatly appreciated! Also if anyone then could suggest the best way to back up in two places (digitally and perhaps a better brand of external drive) it would be amazing.
If you need more info let me know!

If you're very lucky, you might be able to salvage the drive mechanism, and the data, by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

  • Library locked on external drive

    Hi,
I was using the Aperture on a PowerBook 17" laptop without problems. I was running out of space and copied the aperture library file on an external USB drive. It worked fine for a couple of weeks but than, after one import from my D200 stoped in the middle of transfering files, I received the message that the database is "locked". I looked at the file with the command-I key and the "locked" box is not checked and I do have read and write permision on the file. I copied the file back to the internmal HD (it takes forever for this 44GB file) and ran the disk verification and permisions on it: all fine with no errors given. I can read this file on the internal drive with no problems. I subsequently tried to copy this file on 3 other external disk drives and they all give me the errer message that the file is "locked". I am really at a loss: the Aperture library file can be read without problems on the internal drive but not external drives. I used the vault feature being afraid I will loose a few thousand picutures. I gave me some errors re. few projects: it could not back them up. This was not a problem before. I called Aperture Apple support and they were not very helpfull: they informed me that they had this problem "rarely". The fellow provinding customer support instructed me to delete the preference file in the "Preferences" folder pertaining to Aperture, create a new Aperture file to see if all works well (which it did) but did not solve my problem of "unlocking" the database on external drive where I would like to work with it since I am out of space on my laptop.
Did any of you had this problem? This could be a major shortcomming for this program if it locks your DB and can't unclock it. I should also mention that when I click the "loced" tab on the information pannel, the tick mark flashes but nothing happens.
Any help that will result in solving this problem will be appreciated.
    CoolMac.
    iMac17 and Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

Bear in mind that Time Machine will apply ACL's (extended permissions) to the backup disk so it may be completely normal to be unable to access files on that disk. If you are trying to use an iPhoto library inside the backups folder it may not work at all - it must be copied off to another disk to use with iPhoto.
With that said, if the disk is failing or damaged it may not mount in Finder - is that what is happening here?
It is also possible that the failure is the 'external case' and not the actual disk, if the controller is not working the disk may not mount - sometimes you can get a disk to work by using a different external case or a USB toaster
You will need to consider data recovery if the disk is on it's last legs or is corrupted. Frankly this is complex & you should send it to data recovery professionals if you are inexperienced - it is the best way to stand any chance of recovering data on a failing drive, but it is costly. You are also correct to se the disk as little as possible - if the damage is a mechanical issue reading the disk can cause the disk to fail quicker.
If you are intent on doing data recovery yourself you must get another disk that is larger than the disk you need to repair. Then you can use tools like Disk Warrior or or Disk Drill to repair the disk or recover the files.
Provide more info about where the library is & the state of the disk, you may not need to do recovery.

  • How do I change the "Permissions" on an external drive to 'read & write'?

I am experiencing a problem with an external Hard Drive that I'm now using with my iMac, that used to be connected to my old PC.
I can't write anything to it. When I check its "Info", under the "Sharing and Permissions" tab, it says "You can only read".
Does anyone know how to change this so that I can both read and write to the drive like normal?

    Hello br121
You will need to *Partition and Format* the External Hard Drive.
+Warning save all the data to another drive, partitioning and formatting will erase your drive.+
If you want to setup the drive exclusively to use with the iMac (Time Machine, Cloning your Mac HD or storing large files) you will have to reset the partition map scheme to *GUID Partition Table* and format to *Mac OS Extended (Journaled).*
If you want to setup the drive so that both Mac and windoz systems can read and write to it, then you will want to reset the partition map scheme to MS-DOS and format to FAT-32
+(keeping in mind that FAT-32 has a single file size limit of 4GB)+
The following article by Ken Stone was written before Snow Leopard, but it's still very helpful because basic Disk Utility partitioning and formatting is the same.
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/partitioningtiger.html
If you get stuck you can refer to Ken's article above, Disk Utility HELP and or come back here.

  • External drive is visible but...

I was fooling around seeing what permissions I had set for my external drive and switched the permissions from my user name (admin with my login name) to system, thinking that when I switch from PPC to Intel the Intel would read my drive. Well, now the drive is mounted, and I can see my folders but no files appear. When I try and change my permissions back I get error code 213.
This happened once before but the drive couldn't be seen on the desktop but was mounted. I remember going into Terminal or having to delete a pref. file?
I'm trying to backup my files onto the drive so when i make the switch I can pull my files off the external to the Intel macbook pro.
    Thanks

I'm not sure to exactly understand your message, but I can help you getting good permissions for your whole drive again, using Terminal.
Assuming the user from which you want to use your disk is joe, and is in the administrators group, you can do the following :
    sudo chown -R joe.admin /Volumes/myVolume
    sudo find /Volumes/myVolume -type d -exec chmod 775 {} \;
    sudo find /Volumes/myVolume -type f -exec chmod 664 {} \;
This should set some standard rights to every file in the disk.
If this is a system disk, things are more complicated and I would treat each folder case by case, but repairing permissions with disk utility is a good start.

  • Sharing external drive over network - problem

    Hey guys,
I searched the forum, but nothing posted to other threads helped.
I want to share a LaCie external USB drive over my network. It consists of two macs: a mac mini and a macbook running OSX 10.4.9.
The external drive is formated in FAT32. I enabled sharing in the system pref. but I don't see it when trying to connect. I installed SharePoints and shared it from there, still nothing. I tried connecting using the "afp://..:" stuff, but I get an error message, saying I cannot connect.
    Got some ideas?

    Thanks for your reply
Did you use the little "Show File System Attributes" yet?
    Yep, it's r&w
Did you use the enable Windows(smb)Sharing to Shared?
    Yes
    Did you add Users yet?
Yes, my username which i use to connect is added.
