Permissions Music Folder not right

I am having troubles with permission in my iTunes folder, after I changed my account from 'robskt' -> 'rob'. I just simply moved it to my new account, and since then I am having these troubles. I fixed it through the finder, and everything was okay for a couple of months, until I did permission repair in the Disk Utility yesterday. When I want to change the owner back to 'rob' I can't select it.
I have these permissions:
Pandora:~ robskt$ ls -ld ~/Music
drwx------+ 5 robskt  staff  170  1 jun 09:50 /Users/robskt/Music
Pandora:~ robskt$ ls -ld ~/Music/iTunes
drwxrwxrwx+ 13 robskt  staff  442  2 jun 12:58 /Users/robskt/Music/iTunes
Can anyone help me out?
Thanks in advance!

As you can see, changing your short user name is very difficult.
I would try the instructions listed here. Note they were written for Leopard, but work equally well for Snow Leopard, just use the Snow Leopard installer.
If that doesn't work, we can try a more brute force method.

  • Why is music folder not recognized and what can I do to solve this problem?

I had to reformat my computers hard drive and re installed iTunes version 6. My songs were in iTunes 5 before the system crash and now that I have fully restored my computer, I cannot import my backup music folder into the iTunes library. I have over 5,000 songs on a self powered USB drive and iTunes does not recognize it. How can I import the songs from my USB drive to iTunes 6? I'll be really glad if someone could suggest a solution.
    P4 3.4Ghrtz   Windows XP

See if any of these things will get the videos app working again.
    Quit the videos app completely.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Try the videos app again.
If that doesn't work, reboot the iPad. Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
If that fails, try this. Swipe to the right from your first home screen to get to the iPad Spotlight search. Type in the name of the movie in the field at the top. When the movie appears in the search - tap on it and it should start to play. Let it play for a minute or so - hit done - go back to videos app and see if all is OK.

  • Importing only songs to music folder, NOT videos?

OK, so here's my problem... I have probably 25+ gig's of Movies, and only have about 15 GB's of space left on my laptop. (I have a LOT of music, TV shows, etc...)
I would like to know if there is a way to get iTunes to import music ONLY into the iTunes music folder, and leave videos and such at their source (a 500GB external drive).
I obviously could copy the music manually, but that means it is no longer organized in the iTunes folder.

Note - You don't need to copy them to the HD first,
    as btabz suggested.
There are different ways to import music. You can copy them (the music files) onto the HD wherever you want and then import into iTunes, or have iTunes import directly off the DVD and put the files in the iTunes Music Folder. Both ways get the music into iTunes and stored on your HD. It depends if you want the music in the iTunes Music folder or not. With the way I suggested, the music is placed where you want, instead of having iTunes put it where it wants.
Both ways will work fine though.

  • Why would files that are in my iTunes Music folder not show up in iTunes?

Downloaded emusic.com files show up in my iTunes Music folder like usual, but iTunes doesn't seem to detect them. Then, each time I quit iTunes I receive a problem report saying iTunes quit unexpectedly.  Help?

iTunes is a data base manager and as noted needs a reference.
If I am adding tunes not purchased from the iTS then I d/l to a folder on my Desk Top then as noted 'Add to Library'.
I also have the iTunes prefs>Advanced>copy .... option enabled. This way iTunes will copy the tune into iTunes and then you can delete the Desk Top copy.

So is this album in iTunes?
then I have like 3 albums already saved on my computer that I just cant get to the itunes folder at all
What have you tried so far? Have you tried using the *File -> Add Folder to library* option and then navigate to each of these three albums and adding them to iTunes? Have you tried dragging and dropping them into iTunes as well?
I would maybe take a look at this Apple support document related to adding content to your iTunes library.

  • Songs in itunes music folder not showing

    Hello all:
Songs in user/music/itunes music folder are not showing up in itunes 7.6.1 are not showing in the itunes application. Recently upgraded from previous version. TIA for any advice.

Maybe I need to expand and clarify a bit.
In my "user/music/itunes music" folder there are songs located in folders listed by artist/album. Some of these songs show up in the iTunes browser. I'm assuming this is due to my recent migration from my old Powerbook to my new Macbook Pro.
Any help would be very welcome.

  • ERROR You do not have enough access privileges / Music Folder Permissions

OS...W XP iTunes 7.6.2.9 HP. Classic 60 GB HP iPod. I have this error when I try to import some CD's. Am trying to import a brand new cd I just bought and error reads...
*"Error occured while converting the file "Large Time" ( or whatever the 1st songs name may be). You do not have enough ACCESS PRIVILEGES for this operation.*
iTunes could not save your music folder because you do not have write access. Check permissions on your Music folder and folders in your Music Folder, then try converting this file again".
Well I've tried every way I can think to check the permissions and am clueless. I do know that after going through my pc settings for folders, that after some time, I was able to save the last playlist and sync it. I've no idea why, but I do know I have this problem frequently. And it's BAaaaack.
If you find or have the answer please post...ty. MP3 players seem more user friendly, using WMP, but this iPod was more for the money.

    To fix Home folder permissions
Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder.  At the command line prompt enter or paste the following command line:
    sudo chown -R `id -un`:`id -gn` ~
Press RETURN.  You will be prompted to enter your admin password which will not be echoed.

  • Combing two large libraries (over 1.25 TB total) and music will not show up in library but does in media folder. Help?

I'm a Windows PC user, and I'm currently in the process of combining my 12,000+ song library on my laptop (we'll call it Library A) with a 180,000+ song library (Library B, and yes, one-hundred-and-eighty thousand) onto a new hard drive. I have successfully moved Library A from my laptop onto my new hard drive. The method I have tried so far to move the Library B music into A on the new hard drive is by using the "Add Folder to Library" and selecting only a small portion of the folders in Library B's media folders as not to overload iTunes and to be able to pinpoint problems.
This worked for a few small iterations but the moment I tried doing half of the "A" artists (alphabetically), most of the music doesn't show up in the library. Some of it doesn't show up in the regular library but in the "Recently Added" playlist, and some don't show up in either. I have even tried adding just single files now and those don't show up at all.
THEY ALL SHOW UP IN THE MEDIA FOLDER ON THE NEW HARD DRIVE. That is why I think this might be true but I'm not sure: I've heard that it is because iTunes needs to process all the songs before it shows up in the actual library. Is this true? I have waited over an hour for adding about 6,000 songs; half showed up right in the beginning and half haven't yet. When I added about 4,000 just before this, they all showed up without any problems.
Any help? And is there an easier, error-free way to add this many songs into a new library at once? I'll keep this updated for anyone trying. Thanks in advance!
I have tried signing out and signing in and that does not work either.

    hey.
finally somebody with the same problem! i bought a new external drive because i was running out of space and backed up my entire library. then my computer crashed and i wanted to take advantage of a clean drive and not add my whole library back onto my computer. i'd love to be able to access my music folder on the external and have that show up as my library on iTunes when connected...
i followed all the steps as closely as possible and am pretty confident that my advanced preferences in iTunes are correct, but the library does not show these songs from the external drive. have you had any feedback or figured it out on your own?! i hope so, i'm at a deadend.

  • How can I add songs to itunes music folder without them being duplicated within the folder (not on my hard drive)?

I have music files all over the place and want to put them all in itunes with no duplicates and get rid of all the rest. how can I do that? Some of my playlists are missing songs. I would like to move the playlist back to itunes from my ipod without having to put the songs in my media folder yet again! I have wasted so much time fooling with this. Really what I am trying to get at through all of this is to run the songs on the ipod through ivolume so they play equally.
Can anyone make sense of this for me?

It sounds like you have a few different problems.
To find all your music, try using a spotlight search. Type "kind:music" in the spotlight search (the magnifying glass in the far upper-right corner ) then choose "show all in finder". You'll end up with a window that shows all your music files, regardless of where they are on your hard drive. But don't move any files, because that may confuse iTunes (it won't be able to find files that you move, because - d'oh! - you moved them and now they're not where iTunes left them. That's usually how people end up in the kind of situation that you're in.)
If you want to let iTunes organize your music for you, make sure those options are turned on in the iTunes preferences (in the "advanced" section), then go to the "File" menu, choose "Library" and then choose "Organize library". That will put all your music in the iTunes Library folder (but leave copies of the originals wherever they were, all over your hard drive).
To find duplicates in your iTunes Library, choose "display duplicates" (or hold down the option key and it changes to "display exact duplicates" which might help in some cases). You'll still have to manually go through them to delete one of each duplicate.
Now you can start combining those three techniques - if you consolidate your music and let iTunes copy everything into the music folder, you'll know that iTunes safely has a copy of all your music in the iTunes Library folder. So you can do the spotlight search, and delete any duplicate files that are not in your iTunes library folder. Anything that's left over (that is, it's not a duplicate and it's not in the itunes music folder), you'll need to add to iTunes (try using the "automatically add to itunes" folder - spotlight search to find it -  anything you drop in there will get added to iTunes without leaving a duplicate file). Then you can use the itunes "duplicates" feature to find the duplicates in iTunes and fix those.

  • ITunes:  Bulk of music is in media folder, not in Library.itl file

    Hello,
    Windows 8.1
    iTunes 12,1,1,4
The bulk of my music is in my iTunes Media and cannot be accessed by the iTunes Library.itl file.  (The Library.itl has approximately  900 songs and I have over 7,000 in the media folder.)  I can open the individual files under the Media Folder and actually click and move those files onto the iTunes "My Music" section and they become a permanent part of the Library.itl file and stay there with no more issues.  The songs are no longer in the Media folder after moving them to the Library.itl file.  Is there an easier and quicker way to move the files from one to the other?  I have tried consolidating and organizing.  I have moved the Library.itl file to the desktop, deleted the one within iTunes, and attempted to have it import the playlist, and that didn't work.
I would appreciate any input.  Many thanks in advance.
    Wordy

If you apply either method to the folder Broken Social Scene this will add the album(s) to your library.  The location of your media folder may indicate that your library is misconfigured, or that some other application (typically Windows Media Player) is conflicting with iTunes and moving files and folders to locations that iTunes then can't find.  See turingtest2's user tip on Getting iTunes & Windows Media Player to play nicely for guidance on this issue.  At this point I'd also take a backup of your current iTunes folder and all its contents so that if necessary you can revert to the current state in case anything doesn't work as intended.  I'd also suggest looking at another of tt2's documents on Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows - sometimes you end up with a structure as you describe if iTunes can't access its default locations due to issues with Windows permissions.
Unless you have specific needs to do something different, I'd recommend configuring iTunes as follows, under Edit > Preferences > Advanced:
This is the location of your iTunes Media folder.  For best results this should be contained in the same folder that holds your iTunes database (the iTunes Library.itl file).  The example above is from my library, which is located on external drive, so the database file is in K:\iTunes and the media folder is as shown in the screenshot.  In the default case:
the iTunes Library.itl file is in C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes
the media folder is C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media
When this option is checked iTunes will place everything in folders and may rename files based on the metadata held within the database and/or embedded within the media files - for music, this will be folders of the form iTunes Media\Music\artist_name\album_title with files named according to the values of disc number (if set), track number and song name.  The one exception to this is for albums that are grouped by having the "Part of a Compilation Flag" set - these will be found in iTunes Media\Music\Compilations\album_title.
This option works in conjunction with the different methods by which media can be added to the iTunes library, as shown in the table below:
Having both the Keep iTunes Media folder organized and Copy files to iTunes Media folder ... options checked results in a completely self-contained library structure.
Just to reiterate what was in my original response, using your example, either:
in iTunes, make sure that the menu bar is visible (press Ctrl-B if it is not), then select File > Add Folder to Library... navigate to your iTunes Media folder and select the Broken Social Scene folder (just select it, don't open it to see the contents), and click Select Folder, or
in Windows Explorer, select the Broken Scene Folder and copy (or drag and drop) it to your iTunes Media\Automatically Add to iTunes folder; assuming iTunes is running, the albums/songs will immediately be added to your library, the media files moved into the iTunes Media\Music hierarchy, and the Automatically Add to iTunes folder left empty (if iTunes isn't running when you do this, the process will start automatically when you next start it)
In either case you'll find that:
the Broken Social Scene album(s) will now be in your iTunes library, i.e., you can see / play / sync to iDevices from the iTunes UI
the media files for the album(s) will have been placed in iTunes Media\Music\Broken Social Scene\album_title
Continue this process until everything's correctly added to your library - you can add multiple folders using both methods I've described.  Once everything's done, you can delete any folders/files that are still sitting outside the iTunes Media\Music folder hierarchy.
Then make (and continue to maintain) a backup of your library so that you have a duplicate in case of any disasters

  • Blackbery Link - browse pc folders and copy mp3 files not in music folder

    Hello to all of you
I have music archives in different drives and pendrives
It is not intuhitive at all how to browse local PC drives and or PC folders to select and copy single or many .mp3 files from the PC to the BlackBerry device.
Please don't tell me that the silly solution is to move the mp3 files to the windows music folder.
Additionally, i find really against an user friendly approach the BlackBerry Link in the music section. It doesn't allow to show the mp3 files names and use, manage and browse .mp3 files by their name, I see only
    - All the music
    - Album
    - Artists
    - Genres
    - Playlists
    well,
    - I have so many .mp3 files
    - they don't have all the mp3 tags
    - I see only an unfinished list which doesn't allow me to select the file I need, and I must scroll all of them every time
A TOTAL NO SENSE in my personal opinion
Anyway , from BalckBerry Link and from PC side, how to select one single mp3 file, QUICKLY, and copy it inside the BlackBerry device in the music folder?
    Thank you
    C0r

    Yes CRAZY!!! It is confirmed,
trying to find a solution to this crazy behavior, I've turned to documents side.
I've added my mysic folder to the documents and TA-DAAAH! The .mp3 files don't show!!!
On the right panel a big string says "The folder doesn't contain supported files"!!!
Well, looks like that BlackBerry Link leaks like the OS 10
Anyway, if you can provide a solution that allows to copy mp3 files ID3-less (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ID3), mean that none of the ID3 has been filled, thank you so much in advance.
To BB Link developers, think about allow users to tranfer files as files and not as you arbitrary want, thank you.

  • ITunes Library Does Not See Music in iTunes Music Folder

I'm sure this has been posted before, but I can't seem to search the right combination of terms to find the answer.
The issue: I just bought a Macbook Pro, an upgrade from my Powermac G5. On the old setup, iTunes was accessing its library from a second internal harddrive. I've removed that drive and put it in an external enclosure for use on the MBP.
When setting up my MBP, I used migration assistant to import my settings (probably the source of my problem). Once set up, I copied my entire iTunes Music folder to the harddrive of the MBP and pointed iTunes to it.
iTunes lists all of the music but can't find any of it. I've tried changing the iTunes Music folder location in the preferences to something else and then back to where the music is, just to force iTunes to reread it and nothing seems to work.
How can I get iTunes to recognize this music? Again, iTunes is pointed to the correct folder and all the music is in there. It's very important that I don't lost my comments and playlists if at all possible.
    Thanks!

Not sure why this worked, but I dragged my old iTunes Library file and iTunes Music Library.xml from the old computer into the new one, and it automatically worked. Weird fix, but I'm happy nonetheless.
