Permissions not being reset in LION

Help I need to reset the permissions on my 10.7.3 lion software. Apple support has escalated this to software engineering levels and have not been able to give me a resolution. For some unknown reason all of a sudden my permissions would not allow me to properly move files to the hard drive. Also it would not allow me to take and move files around with the hard drive, it would just perform copies and not moving files to these locations - these were unexpected actions that were happening within the system.
I have worked with Apple support and have reset the ACL's using a root user this has still not resolved the problem.
Apple keeps escalating this issue up to higher levels of software engineering department however it takes 2 to 3 days every time to reply to me and this is unnerving.
Can someone help me with mastering this whole permissions issue at the user level and unlock everything so that my computer can just go back to normal?

Most likely you have Office 2004 which are PPC-only applications and will not work in Lion. Upgrade to Office 2011. Other alternatives are:
Apple's iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.)
Open Office (Office 2007-like suite compatible with OS X.)
    NeoOffice (similar to Open Office.)
LibreOffice (a new direction for the Open Office suite.)

  • Group Permissions Not Being Respected

After upgrading our file server to 10.4.8, group write permissions (POSIX, not ACLs) are not being respected for users connecting via SMB. If Group X owns a folder, and has Read and Write permissions on that folder, User A can log in via SFTP and modify that file. However, User A can not log in via SMB and modify that same file. When looking at the "Effective Permissions Browser" in WGM, it will correctly show the user and group ownership of a file, but state that User A does not have permissions to modify that file (in spite of User A being in Group X).
Has anyone seen anything like this? Or does anyone have any suggestions? We can't try switching to ACLs to resolve the issue because the files being shared are mounted from a remote NFS server (ACLs are only supported on HFS+ volumes).
    Thanks.
    Xserve G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    like so:
    drwxrwsr-x 6 jwalcik laitssta 4096 Oct 9 23:13 test
where the folder belongs to the user "jwalcik" and to the group "laitstaff". both are shown as having read, write, and execute status, and the setguid bit is set for the group. other users have read and execute privileges.

  • Permissions not being fixed

i tried to fix permissions on my macbook and it seemed to work fine, but five minutes later, i fixed permissions again "just to check" and i figured out that my permissions are not being fixed. What can i do?

If you recently installed the iPhoto and Front Row updates, then you are probably seeing messages that are innocuous and can be safely ignored. We all see the same thing. Hopefully this may be fixed in a future update.

  • Bind Variable Not Being Reset

I am using JDeveloper 11.1.1.2 and ADF with BC. I have the following situation:
I have a view object whose where clause has multiple bind variables. On one of my pages, I dragged this view object as a form onto the page. I also dragged the ExecuteWithParams method for this view object onto my page as a command button. I dynamically set the bind variables for this action via EL-based NamedData elements. When I click the button, the query is run with the bind variables I specify. Everything looks great.
On another page, I am programmatically setting one of the bind variables (let's call it bv1) for the same view object and then navigating to the page described above. The data displays fine. However, when I try to use the command button (ExecuteWithParams) with a different value for bv1, the query continues to use the value that I set programmatically.
It seems like the bind variable value set programmatically (using vo.setNamedWhereClauseParam) always trumps the one that gets set using the NamedData element in ExecuteWithParams. Why doesn't this value get reset with the value from the NamedData element?
    Thanks,
    Brad

    hi Brad
... It seems as if once the bind variable gets set on the view object programatically, the corresponding parameter in ExecuteWithParams does not overwrite it. ...Looks similar to the behaviour I describe in forum thread forum thread "10g versus 11g : bind variable issue"
at 10g versus 11g : bind variable issue

  • Permissions not being inherited to subfolders

I have recently formatted a 1TB WD drive in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. The pemissions are set to read + write for all users on the root of the drive. However when i create a new folder it does not inherit the same permissions! The drive will be used by other devices other than my Mac and they need full write acced to it.
What settings do i need to change to ensure the new subfolders inherit the root permissions.

The easiest way to accomplish this on an external drive is to open a Finder  Info window on the drive (Get Info) and at the bottom of the window, below the listing for the permissions is a checkbox, Ignore ownership on this drive (or ignore permissions, can't remember the exact wording)
Set that and everyone will have full access to the drive
Message was edited by: Frank Caggiano - You could also accomplish this with ACL's but it can get a bit complicated.
The trouble I see with using umask for this is that all files will affected not just the ones written to this particular drive. That may not be a problem but it is something to keep in mind.
The two solutions I mentioned will only affect this drive.

  • Errorlevels not being reset

Ok, so I'm quite embarrassed to post this but I'm completely stumped.  I've tried it across various computers and the same result.  When I use a batch file or go direct to the command prompt and enter the commands below it does not properly report
errorlevels.  These are the commands :
    msiexec /x {123456} /qb
    echo %errorlevel% >>"%TEMP%\log.txt"
Again, whether a batch or a cmd prompt it spits out errorlevel of "0", not 1619 or 1605.  Try it out, and yes its an invalid GUID.  Now another example is if I run a command prompt and enter a bad command to get a 9009 error and then
run msiexec /x it still holds the 9009, it never resets the errorlevel to what it should be.  See photo below:
Now if I run an msiexec /x with an incorrect GUID from vbscript and echo out an error code to a log it reports accurately.  What am I missing as I'm sure its something simple and I feel dumb for asking this.  The end goal is for it to properly
report an error level so if it fails an uninstall it will tell me the error code in the log and report it back up to SCCM for a proper response from technicians.  Thanks for any input.
Be kind and Mark as Answer if I helped.

Thanks Bill and JRV, that helps.  I've used start /wait before but never really ran into an issue with not using it.  Batch is just a very peculiar language, vbscript handles error handling much better......and probably powershell as well.
     Thanks again.
Be kind and Mark as Answer if I helped.
Nope - works exactly the same in VBScript and in PowerShell.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • Apps Crashing, Permissions not being repaired.

iShowU crashes and I get this (see bottom) I've tried to fix my permissions but since upgrading to SL it never finds any problems except these ones.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
I used to have a lot more errors, and I'm wondering if it's not finding them because they are not there or because something is not working properly. It could be that iShowU just isn't compatible but my overall stability has been decreasing...
    What should I do?

Here is the link about SUID:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?viewlocale=en_US
I have noticed that since upgrading to Snow Leopard 10.6.2, I have only the one SUID. So I don't think you have any permissions problems.
Unfortunately, I am not familiar with iShowU, and I can't read your log, so I can't help with that. Is iShowU fully compatible with Snow Leopard?
    Good luck!

  • File permissions not being set to files in shared volumes

I have recently taken over responsibility a small OS 10.5.6 server and several clients. Workstation users log in via user accounts on the server, which also has several shared storages spaces.
I have recently reinstalled the OS on several of the workstations. They are up to date (10.5.6) and added the directory server using the "Directory Utility".
My users are able to login and operate using their accounts on the server. However when a file is created on one of these rebuilt workstations, and placed into a common share, they retain the users permissions instead of assuming the group permissions.
I hope I have stated my problem clearly, thank you in advance for your assistance.

    Hi cdavec007
I'm having the exact same problem :-/ I've just setup a dual G5 as a server in standard mode, and I've added user permissions (ACL's) as described in the manual via Server Admin App.
But still when I transfer e.i. a folder containing a bunch of files from my client-Mac to the server HD, it retains ownership and permissions, instead of taking over the permissions set with the ACL.
This is truely frustrating :-((( I've read the f**** manual, and I think I've done exactly what it says.
    Can anybody help?

  • Permissions not being propagated to files

    Hi.
Wondering if anyone can help me. Iv recently updated to Mavericks & Server 3.0.2. Iv setup permissions on a shared folder using the server app. Works fine apart from files aren't getting the correct permissions. Instead they get a permission called custom.
    Here's a basic example. I have a lot more users/groups.
Folder: Office support = Full control (grayed, so its been progated from a higher folder)
File in the folder above. Office support = Custom
Anyone know why this is happening?
    Cheers,
    Ben

No answers for you, just a similar issue. If a single user works on files in a folder and drags that folder to a shared directory, no other users have access to the new folder, even though pretty much everyone in the universe has RW permissions to the enclosing folder.

  • Lion Server postfix mail not being delivered to mailboxes. "SMTP restriction `reject_invalid_helo_hostname' after `permit' is ignored" and "connect to private/policy: Connection refused" errors.

All, Im stumped. In fact I have been on the phone with Apple Support and this has been escalated to the top engineers, as I think its got them too..
    Anyway, here is my problem..
I'm running an Mac Mini with OS X 10.7.4 Server. I have had mail running on it for 2 months or so, without any issues. The mail was actually migrated from 10.6 in March, and It actually went smoothly. I have 3 domains which all recieve mail and they all work (or did up until 2 weeks ago)..
So the story is this.. I can send mail from my domains, without issue.  imap and dovecot must be working.. cause all the stored mail, can be read with the mail IMAP client.. I can even transfer mail messages from one mailbox to another with Mail client. Sending mail is a breeze, it still works and the recipients still recieve their mail. But I noticed I wasnt getting any mail at all from those mailboxes... no mail, no spam, nothing.. which is unusal. I fired up Server admin and checked out the SMTP log, and this is what it showed for every email recieved: (xxxxxx is just me hiding sensitive info)

Ok, now what is odd, is these rejected messages are not even appearing in the mail queue in Server Admin. I have no idea why there are not being delivered
Ive checked my postfix main.cf file and master.cf files they both look ok.. Ive even replaced them with the main.cf.defualt.10.7 and master.cf.default.10.7 files and to no avail... same problem..
    So in summary
    I can send mail out
IMAP is working on the client end (thus dovecot is) exsisting stored emails can be accessed, read, moved unread etc..
mail is coming into the sever, but its being rejected. there is NO rejection email sent back to the sender.
mail is recieved by postfix, but cyrus isnt doing anything with it.. I have no idea where it goes...
Could anyone shed light on this...

Ok 1st one. The warning restriction message relates to this line in main.cf:
    smtpd_helo_restrictions = permit_sasl_authenticated  permit_mynetworks  check_helo_access hash:/etc/postfix/helo_access  reject_non_fqdn_hostname  reject_invalid_hostname  permit reject_invalid_helo_hostname
The last reject occurs after the single word "permit" and is ignored.
    However, that's not the problem.
I'm not exactly sure what's happening, but this might be a clue.
It would appear that either postfix is not being able to create the socket for private/policy or it's somehow created with the wrong permissions.  You might need to ramp up the debug level to get a better idea.
You could check if it's being created by "netstat -a | grep private/policy" in terminal.
My guess is that it's not being created because there is no setup statement in your master.cf file, but I don't understand why postfix would be looking for it if it isn't set up.  Private/policy I think relates to grey listing.  Maybe gives you a hint.

I assumed this would help my problem with not being able to open apps like Preview or TextEdit since I installed Mountain Lion. Instead, first I'm prompted to enter a password, then once I do that, I get an error box telling me the Library needs repairing. So I click on Repair, and once again I'm prompted for a password, which I enter, then the same error box opens, and so it goes. Can anyone help me with this problem? I'd greatly appreciate it.

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -Rh $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Step 1 should give you usable permissions in your home folder. This step will restore special attributes set by OS X on some user folders to protect them from unintended deletion or renaming. You can skip this step if you don't consider that protection to be necessary, and if everything is working as expected after step 1.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • IPod Touch 3G (iOS 4.1) not being recognized in iTunes (10.5.2.11) on Mac OS 10.7 Lion

Prior to updating my Mac OS to OS (10.7.2) Lion, and thus while on Snow Leopard (10.6.8), I began experiencing problems with my iPod Touch 3G running iOS 4.1 which was not being detected by the latest version of iTunes (10.5.2.11). It was quite frustrating since i could access the iPod on other computers and with this same version of iTunes, with no problem and thus, it had to be a problem isolated to my computer. In addition, my iPod was working fine and therefore, didn't merit an OS restore and I was also reluctant to perform one. Lastly, it seemed like upon plugging my iPod into the USB ports, the mac would detect the device but would subsequently, partially eject eject so that the device would cease charging but would still be visible in System Profiler.
These were some of the solutions I sought, after not finding an answer specifically for Mac OS 10.7 Lion. I hope it helps, as this was a complicated fix.
I would recommend deleting the 'AppleMobileDevice' Service see: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1747 (This should allow the device to remain connected and charging on the mac)
    Re-install iTunes (latest version)
Also, make sure you have the most up-to-date version of Xcode which incorporate iOS connectivity in the software.
Launch 'Image Capture' from Applications, and in devices you should see your iOS device (iPod Touch in my case) appear in the 'Devices' tab
Select 'iTunes' in the dialog area which allows you to choose which app should launch the device.
Here, I noticed that iTunes didn't immediately respond, but by specifying iPhoto and Aperture, the iPod began to Open in these applications
At this point, I quit and re-install iTunes from a download from Apple's website.
Prior to re-running the installer I re-selected iTunes in Image Capture, and after the installer completed most of the installation, iTunes began to launch.
At completion, iTunes began to launch again, and loaded the iPod Touch in the side bar again.
P.S. I perhaps should acknowledge that I had spent maybe an entire week, crushed and loosing productive time over this problem. I eventually began to pray and trust God (Jesus) that it would eventually work again.

I have the same problem, that when iTunes is open it does not recognize when a CD is inserted.  I don't have an answer but I have a workaround that may be similar to yours.
The problem occurred the first time I tried to import a CD after having updated iTunes on October 12.  I think this is the first version to support iCloud (which I don't use).  That version did not have a Help Menu.  I reinstalled iTunes and now have 10.5.0.142.  I did get a Help Menu but still no recognition of CDs.
I can import CDs if I close iTunes and let AutoPlay take over.  I have AutoPlay set to "Import songs using iTunes".  "Show songs using iTunes"  is closer to the setting you want.  When the CD is inserted AutoPlay opens iTunes and iTunes sees the CD.

Ipod Touch 4th generation 32G not turning on, not charging.
I have used multiple cords on both computer USB and wall USB converters. I let it sit there for over 20 min with each attempt.
It is not being detected by Itunes or my Windows 7 64bit OS. I have tried all 4 of my USB ports (both USB 2.0 and 3.0), with 3 different chargers.
Holding home and power button will not reset.
Tried taking it out of "DFU" mode but Itunes won't detect it, I didn't think that would work anyway.
NO DAMAGE, I have been very careful with it, aside from a few minor scratches. (that you can't even see unless the light reflects them)
My Itunes is up to date, as is my OS.
All I'm getting is a blank black screen. It has been working fine on this computer before. I have no idea what could have happened. I'm at my wits end here.

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
