hi there i have recently tried to repair my permissions but i keep on getting these not getting fixed how can i repair these permissions as the normal way seems not to fix the issue, so when i run the scan it idetifies the following:

I then select Repair and it goes through the motion of repairing these permissions but, fails to do so! how can i manually repair these or fix these issues on my macbook,
cheers for any help

They don't have to on that list. The tip-off that these messages are not errors and completely harmless -- and will always be repeated no matter how many times you run Permissions repair is that many of them show an l, as in
...should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r-- .
This is a symlink, indicating that the file has been moved (and the link can't be followed), but the Permissions database has not been updated by Apple to reflect the change.
All you need to know is that you got the messsage "Permissions repair complete," You can keep repairing them until you are blue in the face and it won't change a thing.
These are the ones I get all the time, at least as of 2/9/12 when I made this screenshot. Btw, I repaired Permissions only for the purpose of making a screenshot to illustrate any post I make on the subject.
YOU DO NOT HAVE A PERMISSIONS PROBLEM, SO STOP REPAIRING THEM.

    Griff,
    I believe you have just made a mistake. The message Disk Utility was putting out about ARDAgent is totally innocuous. But by replacing the file with the original from the Leopard install disk you have, I believe, just undone the Remote Management update, which was one of the first updates Apple released after Leopard launched.
    Folks,
    These SUID warnings are simply Disk Utility's way of telling you that it has detected a file which has been UPDATED without also updating Disk Utility's records as to what's correct regarding that file. So Disk Utility is letting you know that it isn't going to second guess things here and perhaps undo an important change -- and that if there is something wrong with the permissions for that file you will need to correct it manually instead of relying on Disk Utility to do it for you.
    Which is why Griff's ARDAgent message went away when he (mistakenly) replaced the updated file with the original from the Leopard install DVD. Now he's got the older version of the file (and its various permissions) that Disk Utility knows about (thus no message) instead of the newer version installed (quite possibly with intentional permission changes) by the Remote Management update.
    Eventually Apple will put out another update that also brings Disk Utility's records up to date and these messages will go away. If you download the standalone version of the 10.5.1 update and apply it, then that correction to Disk Utility's records is added for all but the ARDAgent file. They'll get around to telling Disk Utility about that ARDAgent change down the road I suppose.
    Again, these SUID warning messages can be safely ignored except to remember that if there IS something wrong with the permissions of one of these listed files then you will have to correct it yourself. That's all the message is telling you.

  • Dear Santa bring me 10.5.2 i.e.  Permissions not fixing in disc utility

    Dear Santa:
    I spent a number of hours trying to verify and repair permissions in Disk utility before I checked the support boards. Please don't bring the boys and girls at Apple any toys this year because they SHOULD SEND OUT ALERTS to their computer owners instead of making them waste their time trying to fix something on their computer that they think is unique to them. I know I should spend every waking hour on the boards but I have bills to pay and I make my money editing with Final Cut- not searching discussion boards. II will admit that the board helped me when the Leopard ate my dingos- The eSATA firmware issue that I resolved with the help of all the little elves out there.

    That has been a topic of discussion for the past several OS upgrades.  Nearly two years ago, I went through excrutiating detail with Apple tech support "higher-ups" and despite what you're seeing, it's not a concern.  The bottom line is that you should ignore it.  I agree that it's annoying but there's no benefit in chasing non-problems.
    Some six months ago, Apple produced this document.
    Yeah, I know that you get a list of a bazillion permissions that were "fixed" but if you immediately do another repair, you'll see that they get fixed again!

    McAfee AntiVirus by any chance? See the thread Why does iTunes delete my itunesprefs.xml?
    Or it could be an issue with the SC Info folder. See TS1277 - iTunes: Missing folder or incorrect permissions may prevent authorization for details.
    Or a repair install of iTunes from the Programs and Features control panel might fix the problem.

  • DiskWarrior not fixing things

    I put new ram in my G5 last month. Things were fine until a couple days ago. I started getting kernel panics and was unable to run superduper because of bad permissions. Diskutility was unable to fix persmissions. So I bought DiskWarrior and removed the new ram.
    DiskWarrior was able to fix permissions to the point where I could run a backup, but there are still many errors that it will not fix. I am no longer getting kernel panics but superduper has now put those errors onto the backup.
    Any suggestions on how I can repair the remaining permissions?
    thanks

    Those permissions are probably the ones you can ignore:
    Permissions you can ignore on 10.5:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?viewlocale=en_US
    using 'should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r--' as an example, you will see the that the permissions are not changed, but the | indicates a different location. This is because an update to Leopard changed the location of a number of system components.

  • When I load sites such as ESPN it loads the headlines and news from weeks ago. I've cleared my cache, history, cookies, and it did not fix the issue.

    When I visit sites such as ESPN where the news and headlines change daily or even hourly for some reason my browser loads the site from a few days ago. I try to refresh the page but that does not fix the problem. I have cleared all history, cache, etc... that did not work. I added a ? to the end of the URL and that loaded a different page but still not the current new head lines. It's almost like it is stuck with the info from a previous visit.

    Hi Elkhorn,
    Please try this:
    # Open the url about:permissions
    # search for the site in the filter
    # click "Forget this site"
    # Restart Firefox
    # Open the site and see if the headlines change :-)

  • Why is repair of file permissions not automatic if it is so important?

    Over an over I have seen advice to use Disk Utility to verify and repair permissions to prevent or to try to repair OS problems. Some say repair weekly, some monthly, other say after updates, others when there are problems and on and on and on. If this is something that should be done periodically, why hasn't Apple made the system software do this for us automatically? What are permissions? Why can't repair be automatic????? How do they get screwed up?

    Permissions tell the system who the file belongs to, and who is allowed to do what with a file or folder. Thus the system folder is owned by root, belongs to group wheel, the owner has read and write permissions, the group can read and execute (that is, look at things inside and open the folder), and so can others (users on the computer). When the system is installed this information is saved, and when you repair permissions the list of what permissions "ought" to be is consulted and applied. The list ONLY refers to files that are installed by Apple, so your own home folder and its contents are not fixed or changed in any way.
    Occasionally a program needs access to files or folders where you don't have write permission in order to be installed. When that is the case the installer will ask you for your admin password, and change some permissions so it can do its thing. If the installer is badly written it leaves the permissions in the altered state. Personally I don't believe in giving an installer my password. I don't think a normal program should be mucking about with the System folder, and have discovered several that can be installed perfectly well without adding anything to the system--they didn't really need the password to start with.
    At any rate, if an installer goofs the permissions, or if you yourself monkey around with something and goof the permissions, or if a stray cosmic ray hits, the permissions can differ from what the system file says they ought to be. On very rare occasions this can cause a problem. In the course of many years of reading these forums I have seen about half a dozen problems that are fixed by repairing permissions.
    As routine maintenance Repair Permissions is not necessary. If you never install anything that asks for your password, never mess around with system files, Apple never sends out a software update that messes up something, and no cosmic accident happens, then there is no need to repair permissions. I know a number of people who have never repaired permissions at any time, and their computer runs just fine. Indeed, permissions can be "incorrect"--that is Disk Utility will report the file or folder has a "wrong" set of permissions, but things will still work. For instance, if the incorrectness is that the item allows EVERYONE read, write, and execute permission it will work, it may be wrong (perhaps only the owner should have write permission), but it will work just fine. It's probably a security risk, but it works.

    A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox without informing you about that, maybe after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
    Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox.

  • Permissions not enabled on disk.

    Hello,
    I previoiusly had linux installed in parallel to Leopard on my macbook 4,1.  I'm trying to merge all my partitions so I can reinstall Leopard in as large a space as possible, but the partition that was used as the swap returns error 9973 (Permissions not enabled) whenever I try to do anything with diskutil.  The partition mounts, but doesn't show up in my Volumes directory, so I can't use vsdbutil or chmod.  Here's a layout of my drive:
    #:         TYPE                               NAME                   SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                                *149.1 Gi   disk0
       1:      EFI                                                               200.0 Mi   disk0s1
       2:      Apple_HFS                       Macintosh HD        123.6 Gi   disk0s2
       3:      Apple_HFS                       Linux HD                 23.3 Gi    disk0s4
       4:      Linux Swap  <---- Problem!                                 1.9 Gi     disk0s3
    Any suggestions for fixing this?
    Thanks,
    Jeremy

    Hi BDAqua,
    Thanks for the suggestion, it wasn't my final solution, but it did something very interesting.
    chown root /dev/disk0s3 seemed to execute but I couldn't run chmod on it.  I tried erasing the partition to FAT32 after running chown and instead of displaying error 9973 (Permissions not enabled) it appeared to perform the erase without being able to mount the volume afterwards.  I checked things over with diskutil list and it still listed the partition as being the linux swap.  Only now do I realize that I should have tried running vsdbutil after chown to see if that would have worked.
    My fix was to boot from the Ubuntu install cd and select "Try Ubuntu without installing" from the menu that came up.  Once it was up and running I used the GParted Partition Manager to modify my drive.  Much to my surprise, GParted didn't list the linux swap partition, but rather the name and format I applied after running chown root /dev/disk0s3.  I'm still not sure why diskutil didn't list the change after I erased but I suspect it had something to do with the volume failing to mount after the erase.  From here it was a simple matter to delete all unwanted partitions and resize the one for Mac OS X.
    I should add that I tried GParted Partition Manager because I read a post that it could easily deal with Linux Swap partitions.  Here's the post: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1748051?start=0&tstart=0
    Thanks for the help,

  • 3.1EA2 bug still not fixed - Members of package body not listed in the tree

    Hi, I was working today with SQL Developer again and found that this bug is still not fixed even when it was reported more than 1 year ago!!!
    I did a quick search and found it here
    Package Body Tree not always showing
    The problem is when you expand the package specification or package body tree, not all members of the specification/body are listed. This is mostly observable in the package body, but it regards to the specification as well.
    Consider this case:
    CREATE TABLE EMP (
        ID               NUMBER(6,0) DEFAULT 0,
        NAME             VARCHAR2(20 BYTE) DEFAULT NULL,
        DEPT             VARCHAR2(20 BYTE) DEFAULT NULL,
        FUNCTION         VARCHAR2(20 BYTE),
        PROCEDURE        VARCHAR2(20 BYTE));
    CREATE TABLE LOOP (
      AREA    VARCHAR2(5),
      VALUE   VARCHAR2(2));
    CREATE OR REPLACE PACKAGE Test_Package1 AS
    gvc_const CONSTANT VARCHAR2(10) := 'xxx';
    PROCEDURE Test(p_RC OUT NUMBER,
                   p_ID IN NUMBER);
    END Test_Package1;
    CREATE OR REPLACE PACKAGE BODY Test_Package1 AS
    PROCEDURE Test(p_RC OUT NUMBER,
                   p_ID IN NUMBER)
    IS
    BEGIN
      --INSERT INTO EMP (ID, NAME, DEPT, PROCEDURE) VALUES (1, 'Tina', 'xxx', 'xxx');
      --INSERT INTO EMP (ID, NAME, DEPT, FUNCTION) VALUES (2, 'Jeff', 'xxx', 'xxx');
      --INSERT INTO LOOP(AREA, VALUE) VALUES('a','b');
      NULL;
    END;
    END Test_Package1;Compile the package specification and the body. Expand the spec + body in the tree. Uncomment any of the commented lines in the package body and compile the body again. Now expand the package body again and look what is displayed.
    Why? It is because SQL Developer handles words "Function", "Procedure" and "Loop" as keywords and according to them does the parsing.
    Another case
    CREATE OR REPLACE PACKAGE Test_Package1 AS
    gvc_const CONSTANT VARCHAR2(10) := 'xxx';
    TYPE Loop_rec IS RECORD(
      item1   LOOP.AREA%TYPE);
    PROCEDURE Test(p_RC OUT NUMBER,
                   p_ID IN NUMBER);
    END Test_Package1;Compile just this specification and try to expand it in the tree. Again, during parsing the package, SQL Developer takes the word "LOOP" into consideration and fails to parse the specification.
    There is exactly the same problem when you declare functions from external dll libraries in package body. Since there is no "END;" in this case, SQL Developer's parser fails...
    To me it seems you simply blindly took some keywords like "FUNCTION" and expect there will be some "END;" keyword corresponding with it.
    Can anyone have a look at this and finally fix it?

    Hi,
    Thanks for trying out SQL Developer 3.1 EA2 and providing a clear, reproducible test case for this issue. I logged an internal bug for it:
    Bug 13438696 - 3.1EA2: FORUM: CERTAIN KEYWORDS IN PKG BODY BLOCK MEMBERS FROM CONN VIEW TREE
    It seems the bug noted in the other forum thread you reference has been fixed, but really had nothing to do with problems discussed either here or there. That fix involved adding an Edit Body... item to the Package context menu in the Schema Browser, not displaying Package members correctly in the Connection view tree.
    Regards,
    Gary

  • ACR 7.1 RC Issue Not Fixed in ACR 7.1

    The issue I identified in ACR 7.1RC is not fixed in the production release of ACR 7.1.  Maybe I did not explain this in enough detail, it's very easy to miss.
    1. Select a RAW file that was previously adjusted using PV2010.  When you open the file with ACR 7.1 it will open with PV2010 since the xmp file was saved with that process version.
    2. Click on the "!" next to the image and it changes to PV2012 with suggested slider settings.  Adjust one of the sliders in the Basic Panel - this is very important becasue if you don't adjust a slider the issue does not show up.
    3.  With the Basic Panel still selected, click on the three dashes to the right of the Basic Panel to get the pop down menu and select "Image Settings".  The image changes back to PV2010 with settings that are saved in the XMP file.  Now click on the three dashed again to get the pop down menu and "Custom Settings" is checked, but the image is displaying PV2010, not PV2012 like it should if "Custom Settings" is checked.  You just lost your PV2012 settings. ACR 7.0 does not have this issue.
    4. If in #3 above you select another panel before you click "Image Setting"  the first time you can switch between PV2010 and PV2012 by clicking "Image Settings" for PV2010 and "Custom Settings" for PV2012.   After you do this first in a panel other than the Basic Panel for the first time you can then do it in the Basic Panel without the problem occuring.
    I discovered this while converting images that were adjusted using PV2010 to PV2012 and like to compare the two Process Versions.  I did not have any problems with ACR 7.0, but when I installed ACR 7.1RC the issue occured.  I was hoping it would be resolved in the Production Release of ACR 7.1, but it's still there.
    I am using Photoshop CS6 on a Windows 7 Professional 64 bit computer, don't know if this same issue exists in Lightroom.

    None of the issues reported on this forum have been fixed in Camera Raw 7.1, near as I can see.
    The Camera Raw 7.1 software was built on May 15, but Adobe appears to ignore beta feedback unless it's a real show-stopper.  I can only imagine the definition of "show-stopper" must include users' systems actually catching fire or something.
    Camera Raw 7.1 puts columnar color artifacts like this into images, for example:
    Compare the above to the same conversion done with Camera Raw 7.0:
    Plus Adobe has removed several color-fringing reduction features without providing suitable substitutes.
    I recommend eveyone avoid upgrading to this release.
