Permissions Of File Put In A Drop Box?

Hi,
If you put a file in the Drop Box of someone on another Mac, what permissions should that file have? Should the permissions of the file automatically change as they are copied, to include read&write permissions for the owner of the Drop Box they're going into?
I never really thought about this before. Are all files that you share with Macs, by default, read only? That seems really messed up because it means nobody else can edit them, change them, or modify them in any way.

Thanks for your help. It's all very confusing isn't it. Maybe permissions when file sharing are a bit more confusing in Leopard than they were in TIger. Maybe the problems I've encountered are due to a bug with Leopard? Who knows.
I went into Mac Help and read the article on Drop Box. I also read the article "Finding shared file folders". From what I've read:
The *Public folder* is set up with read-only permissions that allow others to see and copy, but not change its content.
The *Drop Box folder* is set up so other people can copy files to it, but can't see its contents.
The *Shared folder* (Macintosh HD > Users > Shared) you can use to share files with other users on your computer. The Shared folder is set up with read/write permissions so that all users can open files in this folder and copy files to it.
For my purposes, sharing files between users on the SAME computer, the Shared folder seems like the thing to use.

How to play video files that are in Drop box on iPod?

I am going to have to write a technote about this, because it comes up a lot.
Flash Player itself is designed to play SWF content as a browser plugin or as an ActiveX control (when it's IE Windows).
There is a standalone Flash Player, but that's something Adobe  provides directly as a feature of Flash CS4 Professional. It gets installed with Flash. We have made some standalone players available on http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html, but not all (and I don't know why.  Looking into it)
There are numerous 3rd party standalone SWF players out there though.  Some designed to just play video, others that play full SWF. I suggest a google search of 'play SWF standalone' and read the results.
On the Mac, consumers who want to play SWF content off their desktop can use the Adobe Media Player. You can import a local SWF (and FLV and other video) and play it in AMP.  Get it here:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/mediaplayer/
That's Mac only, doesn't work on Windows.

  • Can't delete file from my public drop box

Files were copied to my own drop box folder at ~/public/drop box/ and when I want to delete them it says it is locked. I can't unlock because I don't have permission. If I look at the permissions I see "fetching: custom, fetching: read and write, everyone: read only". The file is also locked and I can't unlock it. I tried using terminal to "sudo chmod" or "sudo chown" but it still says I don't don't have access. "ls -l" shows -rw-------+ 1 staff. "id" shows that I am a member of staff (uid=502(andrew) gid=20(staff) groups=20(staff)). OS is 10.10.1. What do I do now?

I managed to fix it. On the drop box folder itself I changed the permission for staff from write only to read & write and then applied to enclosed items.

  • Lost files after creating a Drop Box - WHERE DID THEY GO?

Having set up a Drop Box for certain private pictures of my fiance by creating a folder and changing the access permissions using "Get Info", and changing everything to "Write Only (Drop Box)" I later tried to access the files by changing the permissions back to "Read & Write", to which OS X said "Are you sure, this cannot be undone?" I said Yes and entered my password, at which point the picture folder reverted to being a normal filder again, but now with apparently nothing in it. It seems that I accidentally deleted the picture files I had dropped into the drop box. The mystery goes on, since in the 'More Info" panel for the folder, it still says that it's taking up around 9MB of disk space (about the size of all those pictures), so could it be that they're still lurking somewhere?
    Any help gratefully received......

  • File permissions issue when putting a file into another person's Drop Box

I frequently drop files from my Mac into a co-worker's Drop Box on her Mac. When I do so, however, the files are inaccessible to her until she does a Get Info and changes the owner to herself.
I've done file sharing of this sort between many different Macs before, but this is the first time I've ever seen someone have to alter file permissions on a file I gave to them--every single time. How can I avoid this problem?
    We're both running 10.4.9.
    Thanks very much.
    MacBook 1.83GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I too have noticed this behaviour with the drop box and find it irritating. I don't use it much so I haven't investigated a solution, but your colleague could try opening Terminal from her admin account and entering these commands:
sudo fsaclctl -p / -e [this enables ACLs on her boot drive]
The below two lines can be pasted in at the same time (replacing "mary" with her short user name):
    sudo chmod +a "mary allow delete,chown,list,search,add_file, \
    addsubdirectory,delete_child,file_inherit,directoryinherit" ~mary/Public/Drop\ Box
That should allow her to have full access to any files put into her drop box. Rebooting might be necessary for the ACL settings to take effect.
Disclaimer: AFAIK this should work because I have gotten similar things working before. But I have not tested this specific solution.
FWIW, it might be easier to just e-mail her the file instead.

  • Script for copying files to drop boxes of other Macs

I don't know much about scripts as yet, but for daily backup purposes
I would like to copy all new or modified files from various folders
to the drop boxes of two other Macs (like the old DOS command XCopy)
and then reset the "modified attributes" (is there something like that at all?)
    of these files.
A script could do this without the need to always find and select these files
and to always confirm the messages "You can put items into “Drop Box”,
but you won’t be able to see them. Do you want to continue?".
    Thanks!

Here is a short skeleton which doesn't treat subfolders.
May you check if it do what you want ?

if exists disk item sn of folder destFolder then
set needCopy to modification date of disk item sn of folder destFolder is not smd

sourceFile is the path to the source file as text,
dest_folder is the path to the destination folder as text
newFileName is the name of the file as text

  • Receiving files in Drop box

What is a trustedmethod to have files sent to my Drop Box by another party?

Are you referring to the paid Dropbox service? If you are, I suggest visiting their site for more information:
    https://www.dropbox.com/help/90
If you are referring to the Drop Box in your Public folder then you will need to enable file sharing so that your system is visible on the network and listed under the 'shared' section in the finder window. Other people can then connect to your system to gain access to the Drop Box inside the Public folder so that they can deposit files in your Drop Box.

  • Drop Box behaviour

I've just put a folder of photos in my wife's Drop Box.
When she tried to import the photos into iPhoto, all went swimmingly, except at the critical point, nothing happened.
It wasn't too hard to realise that what has happened is that the containing folder I dropped was given "Read" privilege in her Drop Box, but that none of the photos were - they were all "No Acccess".
Easily rectified, but is it anyone's opinion that this should be reported as a bug or do you think this (initially perplexing) behaviour is "correct"?
    I'd welcome your opinions.
    DerekH

The permissions of items added to the "Drop Box" normally won't be modified, with the exception of files copied over a network. Files added to a user's "Drop Box" locally *ie. one user to another) will retain their original permissions, so if the photos were originally "No Access" for users other than the owner, the recipient won't be able to access them, and this is normal behaviour. Normally, the onus is on the owner of the files to set permissions so that the recipient may access them.
What may not be normal in this case is that the permissions were "no access" at all - the default permissions for files created by a user in OS X usually allow at least "read" access for everyone, but that may depend on the source of the images...
If in fact you are referring to a situation where the files were transferred over the network, the ownership and permissions changes for items added to the "Drop Box" will only occurr if the folder appears as a "Drop Box" (ie. "write only") to the user adding the files. If the "Drop Box" folder's permissions have been changed, the permissions modification will not occur. Also, AFP / "Drop Box" behaviour has a history of being subject to glitches, and in earlier versions of "Tiger", there may have been an actual bug. If the problem is just a one-off glitch, restarting "Personal File" sharing, or sometimes rebooting, may be required for the situation to resolve itself.

  • Drop Box or Public folder?

What is the difference between the Drop Box and Public folders? Which is easier for getting files to other users?

all users have read access to your Public folder. so if you want to make something available fro everybody to view that's a good place to put it. but nobody but you can write to your Public folder or change anything in it. but everybody can drop files into your DropBox. they will no longer see or have access to the files dropped into the drop box but you will and you'll automatically get write rights to anything others put in your drop box.

  • Annoying Drop Box Message

Is there a way to get rid of that
You can put items into “Drop Box”, but you won’t
be able to see them. Do you want to continue?
    Message?

    Thanks for your help!
    Then... is this information...
    path to file:
    "/Users/home/Documents/Pages/2Do.pages"
    path to folder:
    "afp://cr1’s iMac.afpovertcp.tcp.local/cr1's%20Public%20Folder/Drop Box"
    ... correct?
Could I make a script file with just this...
    cp "/Users/home/Documents/Pages/2Do.pages" "afp://cr1’s iMac.afpovertcp.tcp.local/cr1's%20Public%20Folder/Drop Box"
    ... line?
Is there a way to not only copy specific files (2Do.pages in the example above)
but to copy ALL modified files of a folder (like the old DOS command XCopy )
and then reset the "modified attribute" (is there something like that?) of these files?
    That would be perfect!

  • Drop Box folder in the Public folder not showing on the network

    Hi everyone,
I am running a MacBook Pro 2010 running OS X 10.8.3 Mountain Lion. We have an office and multiple mac computers connected to our network. For us to transfer files we use the Drop Box folder inside the Public folder (We do not use the dropbox website/service). We would use the finder and click on the computer on the sidebar, open the Drop Box folder and drag files in with no hassel. However my Drop Box folder is not showing up when other users are trying to access my computer via the network.
My file sharing is on and I have attached an image with the settings I am using. I have compared these settings to other macs in the office that have a working Drop Box folder and they match. Hope you guys can help me.

  • Drop box Cache Snow Leopard

Hello all.How can I see what files are in my Drop box cache folder in Snow Leopard so that I can clean out the cache? Are there any other caches that I should clean out periodically? Is there a free program that will clean out my drop box files? What does the Drop Box cache do?What files go in it?

Yes, very strange. If you see a few posts up I actually did get it to work the way I need it to. I called Epson and they had ne reset the printer settings through the system preferences. On my first try this did NOT work, however everything worked as it should in Preview (another image program) and since it did work there the Epson tech basically siad then it's not their problem - most likely adobe.
However just for the hell of it after I hung up, I tried resetting the printer settings again and sure enough it worked. I was able to change the color settings while using Photoshop to manage colors - namely I needed to print a B&W through the Advanced B&W setting. When they are grayed out I can't do this. But even while doing color I don't like that it's grayed out. I've been printing both color and B&W for the last 5-7 years with photosjop manageing colors. I know about double profiling and how to avoid it.
If this was by design from adobe, it deosn't make sense that I was able to access it a few weeks ago after resetting the printer settings. And if this was the case when did Adobe supposedly make the change?
I don't know what's different now, the only thing I can figure is that I had this issue sometime after I installed the lastest Epson print driver - hence the call to Epson... Maybe it's snow leopard weirdness, but I had snow leopard on my laptop and was always able to print sucessfully, but have not tried it since I got the new Mac Pro.
And the strange thing it works fine on other programs. I can have photoshop manage colors and they are not grayed out. Strange and frustrating. Time to set up the DR.
I guess I shoud uninstall PS and then try re-installing it.
    thanks...

  • Duplicate Drop Box Folder in Public Folder

    Hi!
I'm using Lion 10.7.2. The Drop Box folder appears twice in my Public folder:
    in English = Drop Box
and in French, default system language = Boîte de dépôt
If I delete one of the folders, it reappers later on.
Are you experiencing the same problem? Have you find any solution? Thank you!

    It appears that
the [English] Drop Box folder doesn't have a .Localise file
while the [French] Boîte de dépôt does have one.
    How to proceed?
ask for hidden files to be shown—I use the superb Onyx utility
    go to the Public folder
delete the [French] Boîte de dépôt folder
copy/paste the .Localise file into the [English] Drop Box
magics happen: Drop Box is now called Boîte de dépôt

  • Easiest Way to Share Files Between Users? -- Public, Shared, Drop Box.. .

We have five family members (and so five user accounts) using our Mac. What is the easiest way to copy files between / share files with / ... files from one user to the other?
    Shared ... Public ... Drop Box ...
I do this so infrequently that I forget -- or have never figure it out properly.
    Any advice would be great.
    Thanks!

The Shared folder is fine, but anything a user puts there will be read-only to all other users. If other users want to be able to edit such a file they can make a copy of it and edit the copy. If you want all users to be able to edit one of your files without them having to make a copy of it first, you must change the file permissions to allow that.
There are a few ways to have new files automatically set so that others can write to them. Storing such files on an external hard drive on which file/folder ownership is set to be ignored is one way. You can also use ACLs - see this page for an example.
