Permissions on /tmp?
What should the permissions be on /tmp?
i get :
can't bind to /tmp/claws-mail-1000: Åtkomst nekas
When i try to start claws-mail.
If i start it as root it works.
There was a bug a while back in pacman that messed up the permissions on /tmp, that's how it got to be wrong.

Not able to fix permissions after time machine full restore
After doing a full restore from a time machine backup, the permissions of /tmp and /usr/share/derby won't fix. Every time I go into Disk Utility and fix disk permissions these items show up as having incorrect permissions even after stating that they are fixed.
post the full error messages please. they are almost certainly harmless. everybody is getting the one about /usr/share/derby after the recent java update. but do post them anyway.

Merging Partitions - forgot to preserve permissions
Hello Archers,
Recently I was merging some partitions on my drive, and stupidly forgot to preserve the permissions when using cp. It seems that all files are now owned by root 755. I have fixed my home directory permissions, but it seems there are a whole bunch of other directories/files on system that need to have different ownership and are screwing things up (/tmp and /var/log for example) is there some sort of list of proper file permissions for arch? or some way to set these back to the way they are supposed to be? I can't even start X because of these permission problems(it works fine on root).
Thanks for any help,
PerogyYou might perhaps restore many of the permissions by forcing pacman to reinstall all your packages, but you would still have to change permissions of /tmp, /var, and so on manually.

New inst: HP-UX: db2icrt fails: CLP frontend unable to get request handle
We are migrating our installations from the beautiful AIX to ... HP-UX. I am told I will learn to love it, but probably not until they update df to at least 1988 levels.
This is the pilot install. We have never seen this work before (and maybe no-one has...?)
sapinst runs correctly up to the "Create database instance" phase. At that point it dies with the following:
FUNCTION: DB2 UDB, command line process, clp_start_bp, probe:3
MESSAGE : CLP frontend unable to get REQUEST handle
DATA #1: Hexdump etc.
DBI1281E: The database manager configuration file could not be read initialized.
No further useful information is provided.
In db2<sid> I have a bunch of dot files (.profile and the like) and the db2_software directory containing the database installation.
During the create database instance phase, I can see that directory sqllib is created, but it is deleted when the phase fails.
There is no litter of any kind in the /db2/<SID> directories, - nothing has been done at all.
I have done the following: <<imagine nice bullets below - they dont seem to be available here>>
checked that the permissions on /tmp and the installation direcctory (redirected by setenv TEMP /usr/sap/install) are 777: they are;
checked the OS parameters with db2osconf - they are good
checked the host name resolution with a perl script - gethostbyname and gethostbyaddr agree.
the ip address, simple hostname and FQDN are on a line in the hosts file
there is no litter from previous installations - this is a clean machine
I could not find any reference to required environment variables (such as LD_LIBRARY_PATH) in the install guide or the install note - so I have not set any.
I have been hacking away at this for days. I have put in a call to SAP, who will get back to me after dark (of course...)
This seems to be a massively popular problem, and the helpful error message ("Sorry, Sport, just can't bring myself to do it") seems to have people jumping from tall buildings and in front of busses all over Google-world. Furthermore there also seems to be a near-infinite number of possible causes and none of them seem to apply here.
H-PUX version is 11.31. DB2 is 9V5 patch 4. sapinst is latest available. Weekend is fading fast...

No need to apologise for assisting, Paul, but I have dealt with most of these.
The host file contains the unqualified and fully qualified hostnames, on the same line, unqualified first.
I am logging in as root (because there were no other users, and I'm old school, from when everyone logged on as root to do everything.
There is no instance, and in fact there is no sqllib except when the "create database instance" step is running.
The only detectable db2 process running is db2fcmd
I have not been able to find any instructions regarding LD_LIBRARY_PATH and LIBPATH for HP-UX. They are not mentioned in the installation guide at all. I cannot find it in any of the installation notes. I presume sapinst is setting them itself before they are needed. Neither are set in the enviroment of db2<sid> or <sid>adm. I have gnawed my fingernails to the elbow over this one, but I cannot see any indication that either should be set for HP-UX. Anyway, they are definitely not set anywhere, to anything. This was a clean machine before I started chopping it up to do this install.
I figure it must be complicated - I have been trying to get an answer for 10 days already. I will absolutely hate myself when it turns out to be something obvious, documented in 10 places, mostly in bold italics. I shoulda taken my dads advice and been a riverboat gambler or a piano player in a cathouse - its a lot less complicated, -
Cannot install InDesign Trial on Mac (10.9.5)
Hi All
For the past 2 days, I've lost count of how many times I've downloaded and re-downloaded a trial version of InDesign. All I wanted was a working 30-day trial, but it's turned out to be quite a nightmare. I wanted to at least get a trial, before splurging all the cash for the full version... but at the moment I'm glad I didn't blindly just buy it outright!
Initially, I downloaded a CS6 version. Downloaded from: https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/cs6-product-downloads.html.
This gives 2 files:
InDesign_8_LS16.dmg, and
InDesignFamily_8_Content_ALL.dmg.
Opening the first .dmg gives me a error message, saying it cannot be installed on my system, and that I should use Adobe Support Advisor:
Following the link provided, I discover that Adobe Support Advisor has been discontinued:
I then go back to http:adobe.com/au/downloads.html and click the InDesign CC link. This forwards to creative.adobe.com/products/download/InDesign.
This downloads CreativeCloudInstaller.dmg.
I double-click and open the installer, enter my admin p/w and the installer begins, and then fails. Error:202
Doing a web search brings me to:
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1485561
http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/error-downloading-cc-apps.html
https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1520566
These provide links to suggest that I change my folder permissions in ~/tmp (which already has full permissions). Additionally, Error:202 (according to the Adobe list of log errors) states 'there is a problem downloading updates to the location specific in preferences. Change the path and continue.' The solution then states 'download the update from Adobe.com and install.'
What is this 'update'? Where do I find it?
Another thread, https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1497278 provides a multitude of links to other threads, the first handful are regarding the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool. I download the cleaner tool, and run it, only to get an error message:
But if I mount the .dmg, it loads and tells me that there are Adobe ID Credentials that can be cleaned. So I clean them.
It also suggests restarting my MBP and trying the Creative Cloud Installer, which I've done and had no luck.
I've also followed suggestions of verifying and repairing disk permissions (which I've done) as well as restarting after each install and each uninstall (which I've also done), but still can't get it to work.
I'm running a Macbook Pro / 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 / 8GB RAM / OS X Mavericks 10.9.5 (13F1077) /
Welcome any and all suggestions you may have!!A ) Click on the Finder and look for the options listed next to Apple Icon located at the top left corner of the Desktop screen and click on "Go" menu button and select "Utilities" option.
(Applications>Utiliites)
Locate Adobe Creative Cloud and Adobe Application Manager folder under Utilities window and trash both folders.
First click on the below link and open Photoshop Elements download page , just simply keep it open :

waiting for an answer from guiHi,
can you check if your user has permissions on /tmp?
Usually this error occurs when the user doing the installation does not have enough permissions to create files in the tmp folder.

Xorg doesn't start after update
After updating this day (my system was last updated at the beginning of July
this year) I have some problem with Xorg. The server just doesn't start, and

Edit (08.08.2008): All right, don't bother answering this question anymore. The problem is no longer important. This topic can be closed, since it won't be solved.
(I think it was caused by some error during copying files while updating my system.)

Damn you're right. The pacman cache filled the disk...
Problem solved - thanks!
Only question left is:What are the correct permissions for /tmp since I'd like to set them back to default.

Weirdest thing - all of a sudden I can't drag and drop, or cut and paste. I fixed permissions, deleted varied preference files and rebooted, reset the permissions on /tmp, etc. and still no go.
Any suggested avenues to find what the possible problem is, and how to solve (short of reinstalling)? On the left side of the browser at the top of the iPhoto window you will see two symbols. The top one looks like a sheet of paper with the corner folded down, the bottom looks like multiple sheets/cards. If you click on the top symbol, you will view thumbnails of the pages in the book; the bottom gives you photos. At the bottom left of the window, there are two buttons above the word "view". Clicking on one button versus the other changes the window to view either one or two pages. This also affects whether or not the pages are locked together in the browser. When you are in page view, you can drag and drop pages in the browser to create the order you wish.
I hope this helps. -

Pls have a look on steps involved for kernel upgrade and let me know if i m missing something
1) Take backup of current kernel directory-:
cd /sapmnt/PRD/exe
cp * /tmp/backup_kernel_old
2) Download latest kernel from service maket place put it in directory latest_kernel
cd /tmp/latest_kernel
chown prdadm:sapsys *
3) Give permissions
cd /tmp
chmod 777 latest_kernel
4) Upgrade the kernel using following commands
./SAPCAR -xvf SAPEXE_* -R /sapmnt/PRD/exe
./SAPCAR -xvf SAPDB_* -R /sapmnt/PRD/exe
Please suggest me if I m missing something or anything in these steps is wrong.

Add (+) printer in Sys Prefs Print & Fax makes Print Setup Utility crash!
Something is wrong with System Preferences Print & Fax pane, or something else... From there, I can't add any new printers. When you click + below the list, it's supposed to launch printer setup utility? But it does nothing what so ever.. or that's what I thought until I looked in Console to see what's going on (if anything), and the console reports that the printer setup utility crashed. It launches fine directly from Utilities. What gives?
Here is the crashlog report, if anyone can make sense of it:

912 files examined. No problems were found.
11 missing files/directories found during the verification process. They may be responsible for certain printing problems. Printer Setup Repair cannot replace these items. Please refer to the log file for a list of the missing files/directories. You may need to reinstall OS X to resolve your printing issues. Certain files and directories are deleted when using the Reset Printing System option. These files and directories, if required, will be recreated during normal printing.
All the other tabs on Printer Setup Repair were uneventful except the verify permissions on tmp items:

OSB 11g import sbconfig.jar error
Hello everybody,
I'm trying to import OSB config jar to newly created OSB 11g environment. The following error occurs in Oracle Service Bus console during import:
The import failed with exception: com.bea.wli.config.component.NotFoundException: Failed to create temporary jar file
Operation System is RHEL 5.5, JVM is JRockit 1.6.017
OSB is installed to /u01/bea and oracle is the owner of this directory. Oracle user has write permissions to /tmp directory too.
Any idea, why this can happen? What directory does OSB use to create temporary jar file ?

Groff / grops temp file location
I was bit by the sudo grace period bug. Because sudo has a brief grace period,
during which anyone can execute it without being prompted for a password, anyone
who makes it past the firewall can execute anything he wants if he knows when sudo
was last executed. One clever chap changed my root password on me.
I share this verbose background because I want others to be aware of this security hole.
Add these three lines to /etc/sudoers, which removes grace period and prints su activity
in a secure file (so no one knows when su or sudo is executed).
Defaults:ALL timestamp_timeout=0
Defaults:ALL !syslog
Defaults:ALL logfile=/var/log/secure.log
Now on to the question. Because I followed this inconvenience with a reset of all
permissions, I suddenly found that grops (the troff2ps postprocessor underlying
groff) no longer had permission to create temp files, rendering it defunct. I can
only run it successfully as root(!).
Because I cannot find the src for grops, I do not know where the temp files are
created. The man page's specification of /tmp/gropsXXXXX is incorrect. I need
to find that directory and liberalize the permissions.
Thank you.Thank you for your interest in my other security issues. I was able to resecure root and the machine right away...
Great! Sorry I wasted your time with my post then. I must confess that I know pretty much nothing about groff/grops. But I didn't realize that you had simplified your post and weren't having further root problems.
That said, I hope the following isn't equally useless:
1. According to the groff man page:
<pre style="line-height: 50%; background: #eee">
GROFF_TMPDIR
The directory in which temporary files will be created. If this
is not set but the environment variable TMPDIR instead, tempo-
rary files will be created in the directory $TMPDIR. On MS-DOS
and Windows 32 platforms, the environment variables TMP and TEMP
(in that order) are searched also, after GROFF_TMPDIR and
TMPDIR. Otherwise, temporary files will be created in /tmp.
The refer(1), groffer(1), grohtml(1), and grops(1) commands use
temporary files.
</pre>
To my surprise, $TMPDIR is set to something seemingly obscure: /var/folders/XX/XXYYYYYYYYYYYYY/-Tmp-/ where XX is a random pair of characters and YYYYYYYYYYYYY is another random sequence of characters. This folder is owned by the currently logged-in user, and has permissions 0700! YMMV, but this, and the parent directories, may be worth investigating.
2. You may already know this, but just in case (or for anyone else who reads this), 0777 is the wrong permissions for tmp-like directories. The correct permissions is 01777, or drwxrwxrwt. The difference (the '1' in the 512-place) is the "sticky bit" and partially overrides the write-permissions to prevent users from deleting files that they don't own. This is a useful security measure: otherwise, say, an attacker could potentially attempt to exploit a race condition, and replace the temporary file which grops creates with a different file, before grops gets around to reading the temporary file which it created. (On the other hand, with the sticky bit set, a different security issue is created, namely, if the 'XXXXXX' part of the gropsXXXXXX filename is predictable--e.g. the PID of the grops process--then an attacker could try to create the gropsXXXXXX before grops gets a chance to, thereby effecting a DOS attack.) I would be surprised if the incorrect permissions would be an issue for you--why would groff/grops check the sticky bit on the temporary directory?--but it is still worth fixing, if necessary.
