Permissions problem in Time Machine

I need to restore my iPhoto Library which I've somehow messed up today. I renamed the damaged library to Old_iPhoto Library then went into TM and selected the last backup from yesterday but the iPhoto Library will not restore. It starts to copy but then fails saying I do not have permission. Any suggestions?

Found it! You have to restore through iPhoto and not through the finder.

  • Is it possible to change the read/write permissions on a time machine back-up of iTunes? I need to restore it, but old version is locked....

Is it possible to change the read/write permissions on a time machine back-up of iTunes? I'm needing to restore it as my phone deleted half our playlists during sync  & am not seeing a way to unlock the permissions. I have the current version unlocked, but can't seem to get the backed-up version. When I click on restore I get a pop-up that says iTunes can't be deleted as it is part of the OS. I'm not even trying to delete, just restore the old version. Any suggestions?

Hmmm, ok I'll give it a shot. I've always had the iTunes sync w/ my phone set up to only load selected playlists to the phone b/c there's a lot more in iTunes than I have room or desire for on my phone. A few months back I started having trouble w/ trying to sync everything & subsequently adding more to the phone than it could hold. The quickest thing at the time was to unclick the sync music option in iTunes so I could still backup the phone to the computer & not have a problem.
When I asked about it during one-to-one session shortly after, they advised me to delete the music off my phone & then re-sync it to the computer, run a backup of the phone & redownload the music to the phone. When I tried this it ended up deleting all my playlists (but not my husband's) from iTunes. Irritating, but I've been rebuilding the playlists since. I had also unclicked sync music again & an Apple person told me the most likely best fix was to delete & reload iTunes completely.
A few days ago I realized I hadn't backed up the phone to the computer in over a month so after deleting & reinstalling iTunes, & w/o changing anything (sync music was STILL unchecked) I ran a backup & my phone went from having 4 GB free space to being 2 GB over capacity due to iTunes trying to download the entire music library to the phone. I made a one-to-one appt again & it was suggested AGAIN that I delete all the music off my phone & then resync it to the computer & redownload the music. We did this (though a few random songs that had previously been purchased somehow remained on the phone), I got home, connected the phone & instead of the music that shows  as 'on my device' disappearing from iTunes it just sat there, so, as the guy had told me I MIGHT have to do, I threw all those songs showing in iTunes as being on my phone, in the trash so that it was completely clear.
At this point I checked sync music, made sure the options were 'selected playlists only', checked the ones from my own list that I wanted (I usually have one playlist of comedians from my husband's folder that I also have on the phone, but didn't check it at this point). It uploaded all my stuff just fine, but for whatever reason when it saw that I wasn't uploading that comedy playlist any longer, it not only didn't upload it but proceeded to delete my husband's entire folder of playlists from iTunes. -_- I got on the phone w/ an Apple support person right away but he wasn't able to tell me anything .. basically said we'll have to rebuild everything. I asked about the possibility of using time machine, he said he's not qualified to answer that, so that's when I started looking around online & found, among others, the link I referenced a couple replies ago.
I hope this all makes sense. It's been a long-term issue so I'm trying to go from memory as I figured to begin w/ that I had just made a mistake somewhere, so didn't try to document anything. Now w/ it having happened a 2nd time, I'm not sure if it was 'user error' or something else.......

  • Problem with Time Machine Backup or Maybe Not Time Machine

The problem manifests after a Time Machine backup.
    I have an iMac 24-inch, Early 2008. iMac 8,1
Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM.
Last week I purchased two  4-Terabyte G-technology G-Drives. Each drive is equip with FireWire 800 and USB 3.0/2.0. In general use they seem to work fine on the iMac.
I designated one drive as a Time Machine Volume. This is where the problem happens.
Time Machine will do the initial backup just fine. Then it runs once per hour with no problem. Intermittently however, Time Machine will fail and report :
“Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “hard disk name”.
Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder.”
Interestingly enough if I try to open a folder on the Time Machine volume using the Finder I get:
“The operation can’t be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code -50).
If I try to eject the volume I get the irksome “Cannot eject volume because it’s currently in use by one or more programs.”
To resolve this I’ve tried everything, from the banal verifying permissions, to swapping the two G-Drives around, swapping out all the cables, etc.. When the error occurs I go into the shell and check with lsof and always find no software apparently holding or using that volume.
    Very frustrating
I can force eject the volume, then remount the volume and things are back to normal. Same with restarting.
This happened under OS X Mountain Lion and is now happening under a clean install of Mavericks.
I thought that even though I don’t see any MDS  related processes using the drive, it might be spotlight, so I told spotlight not to index the volume. Problem still happens.
I’ve found that one person had almost this exact same problem at:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4756742
His solution turned out to be replacing the G-Drive with another brand new G-Drive.
Unfortunately, I cannot return the drives to the Apple store because the boxes were tossed out. I also don’t relish trying to explain that the drives work just fine until some glitch that occurs either just before or just after a Time Machine backup.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

You can also contact G-Drive while the drives are under warranty (one year I believe).
I have the same problem using Time Machine with the 2T G-Drive and my MacBook Pro. G-Tech emailed me a Firmware Update Utility app and, when that didn't solve the error message problem, they sent me a replacement drive and new cables, twice. The problem persisted; I get one or two backups each day and then the error message. I also can't copy anything to the drive and have to force eject it, so G-Tech suggested I see how well it worked with the USB cable.
Time Machine works flawlessly with the USB cable and the G-Drive, so G-Tech suggested it is a problem with my Firewire 800 port. I worked with Apple Care over the phone, doing all the tests suggested in Eric's post - testing with Disk Utility, Time Machines interface with my User Accounts, the Operating System, then resetting Time Machine, etc. and then I took it to the Genius Bar so they could run the tests themselves. All looked like it should be fine (but they were using a 1T G-Drive and all testing was done within 30 minutes)...when I got home, after two good backups, I got the error message again.
Apple Care finally suggested I make a Genius Bar appointment and sit at the store working with my MacBook, the G-Drive and Time Machine running until I got the error message, to prove the only thing left that could possibly be the cause of the problem, is the port.  I did this last Wednesday.
It is 9 days later and I got my computer back this afternoon...the logic board was replaced because the Firewire 800 port is attached to it...I got my first Time Machine back up at 5:34pm...and the error message again at 7:34pm.
The only solution, it seems, is to use the USB cable instead of Firewire. USB and Thunderbolt seem to be the direction Apple is taking, which is why so many people have been posting about this problem, here and elsewhere, with no real solutions from Apple. See this article:  http://www.infoworld.com/t/mac-laptop/how-cope-the-end-of-firewire-205957
I hope the USB works for you too.

  • Problems with Time machine caused by removing PKCS11.log?

I haven't yet found a solution to my Time Machine no longer backing up: "while an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk"
I requested help before, but so far nobody could help me solve this problem!
I noticed that I removed, in a file clean up, a log file: PKCS11.log."
I still have this file in the Trash but can not restore this file from Trash to its original location because I don't know its original location. The command" restore", or "put back" does not figure in the menu of Trash.
It can be that the removal of this log file causes the back up problem in Time Machine?
As you will notice from the above, I know very little about software and subjects like this and hope that somebody can help me to get Time Machine backing up again.
    Thanks on beforehand!

  • Problem using Time Machine with Seagate BackUp Plus Pls HELP!!

I have a late 2006 iMac (running OS 10.5.8) & am trying to back up using Time Machine with a new Seagate BackUp Plus drive. When I select the Seagate drive in Time Machine it tells me I msut first erase the (Seagate) disk. When I hit ERASE, I get a Time Machine error : COULD NOT UNMOUNT DISK. I see from various posts that 10,5 & 10,6 have issues with some external drives so want to upgrade to Mavericks (to get around this incompatibility issue): HOwever apparently my iMac is too old (by 1 year) to allow this. Can anyone give me any advice on how to get my iMac content backed up via Time Machine using the Seagate BackUP PLus drive I  bought (becasue it is supposedly "compatible with PCs & Macs".
    Thank you!!
    Wendy

Your Seagate drive should work just fine. If it doesn't have any important data on it, try re-formatting it with Disk Utility to blank it out. Or run the Disk verify/repair and see if you can get it to fix any problems.
I have a Drobo FS too. You probably need a firmware update, they issued one a while back to fix problems with Time Machine. Use the Dashboard or download it from their support site, http://www.drobo.com/support/updates.php
Just curious how long you let it run after it "stalled". If it is a big file it could just be taking a while to copy over, do you see activity lights on the USB drive? The first time you use time machine let it run overnight, it's going to take a while, after that it will update quickly.
While you're at it, you might want to verify your start-up disk too with Disk Utility.

  • Problem with Time Machine/Finder not finding and (keeping) remote drive

I have a Mac Pro and hooked 2 Western Digital My Book 750GB drives via Firewire onto it to use as my time machine backup for the two MBP's in the house.
The problem I run into may be more network related than Time Machine related. I have the file sharing turned on in Mac OS 10.5.2. I am able to select Mac Pro in Finder on each MBP and then under that select my Time Machine drive. Then within Time Machine I can select the My Book as my Time Machine drive. At this point I have no problem using Time Machine.
Where the problem occurs is if I use Finder to browse other drives such as an Internal Drive I have in my MBP or my Mac Mini's drive it no longer can find the Time Machine drive. It just is like it loses sight of it somehow. All I need to do is once again go to Finder/Mac Pro and then select the specific Time Machine drive and then Time Machine is fine again.
How can I get around this? It seems i have to make some type of permanent logon or so to this drive.

    1. try plugging in directly (think you did this already)
    2. try a different cable - switch to the one you know works.
    3. try a different port on the case.
    4. does the faulty one power up at all? can you hear the drive spinning?
    5. try switching to the good power adapter if you are not seeing action under #4.
there may also be a reset button on the board or case.
if these are not working, then the bridgeboard has died in the case. there is a board that the drive plugs into that gives you the firewire, usb connections, etc. the drive likely hasn't failed, you just need a new bridgeboard or case, as I doubt maxtor will sell you just that part. the drive can be pulled & put into another case.
check out macsales.com if you need a new case.

  • Can't force quit applications problem during Time Machine backups

I've run into a frustrating problem with Time Machine. I'm using an external 750gb USB hard drive as a backup disk with my Mac Mini; the connection is visa the Firewire 400 port.
When I'm doing anything that's CPU-intensive while a Time Machine is backing up, it is a 50-50 chance that one or more applications will crash. It is impossible to Force Quit them, which means that it is impossible to log out or shut down. The user is faced with a choice: Kill the whole system, and risk corrupting the system hard drive, or yank out the Time Machine disk's connector, and risk corrupting the Time Machine backup. Of course the latter is preferred, and that's what I've done. Thus far, I haven't seen any corruption on the Time Machine drive, fortunately, but in order to work with my system, I have had to disable Time Machine backups while I am working. (I reconnect the Time Machine drive overnight.)
I know from some Google searching that others are experiencing this problem. My question is, has anyone figured out why this is happening, or developed a workaround?
    Regards,
    Bryan

In the process of restoring my MacBookPro from an external TM drive as we speak. I can say with almost 100% certainty that force restarting (holding the power-button down until the book shuts off) will corrupt your start up disk to some extent.
My problem is that I was away from my network when TM tried to do an update. I'm not sure if TM was actually able to connect to my server but none the less I was on a verizon wireless card and so even a minor backup would have been slow.
I needed to shut the computer down and leave. I have had TM hang when trying to shut down and tried to tell it to stop the back-up (which it tries to do for hours on end and have had to force quit before... had to run disk first aid that time) So this time I figured Id leave the computer on (though unplugged) while I drove home.
I did not close the case until the screen went dark. Unfortunately, it had just gone to sleep (a half hour later) instead of shutting off but I did not know that at the time so I shut the case then.
When I plugged it in in the AM it was dark but not black... I could just see the screen and could see it was frozen. Force restart completely screwed my startup disk. Luckily I have a BU from the night before.
Maybe TM should also be linked to the location, and or connection you are using. So, if I am away from my LAN it will automatically turn off. I also wish I could set it to back up every x hours instead of every hour.
Good idea... just needs some work on the routines. (only an hour left on my restore now)

  • Slow backup (and spotlight problems) after time machine restore

    Hi All,
After having some shaky moments with my macbook pro's internal hard drive, I have now installed a new one. I am running the latest version of 10.6.8.
The machine is running fine after a restore from my Time machine backup, but there are a few problems:
    1) Time machine is now making a new backup - it looks like it wants to do a complete backup, which is ok as I have the space. However, after about 30 mins it has completed 156k and is now running at about 1k a second (or less).
    2) Spotlight is reindexing, but appears to be stuck on "Estimating indexing time".
    3) I tried opening mail, and it said it had to convert my mailbox - it got part way through the number of messages and stopped. I force quite, I'll try that one again later.
Any ideas for 1) and 2) above? I can't see any odd looking messages in the console...
    Cheers

So... thought I'd update this since it may help someone else later...
The time machine backup completed fine in the end - it looked like it wanted to do a complete backup but I think it just did a delta in the end.
The spotlight reindex ran for about another 6 hours, judging by the console messages.
However, now I'm trying to run mail - and it's stuck on importing the mailbox - it got to 14157 of 57904 and stopped there. The "time remaining" is increasing by about 5 minutes every minute....
I've seen the following message in the console, which I also saw while it was trying to do the spotlight index last night:
    NSDataMessageStore: couldn't find body
Anyway, I'll let it run and see what happens...

  • Another problem with Time Machine

This is the second time I have experienced the following problem with Time Machine. After 2 months of backups it gets to a point where backups fail and I cannot enter time machine. In each instance I have only used 110GB of the 500GB space.
Is there a better solution to fixing this problem than deleting the sparsebundle? That seems to be the only way to get it to back up again.

  • I am having problems with Time Machine and having enough space to finish my last back up.

I am having problems with Time Machine and having enough space to finish my last back up.

Take a look at this link, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427

  • Interesting problem with Time Machine and Spotlight

As I was searching for spotlight problems in time machine, I came across many discussions about the indexing and whether or not to include your external Time Machine back up drive. My drive has always been indexed and one day when I plugged it in, it ran a quick index which hadn't happened before. I put it in the Spotlight Privacy Tab in Preferences not really knowing what I was doing, and after that whenever I opened Time Machine I couldn't search for files on my external HD - it just wouldn't find them even though I could navigate backward without using spotlight and find the specific files myself.
Thinking all I needed to do was take my Time Machine drive out of the privacy tab, I did so but am still encountering the same problem. Although - it seems to be a little bit better. Say I have a file on my desktop labeled "First Draft" - I backup TM, delete the file from my main comp, then back up TM again to simulate a lost file over time. I search in spotlight "First Draft" click the back arrow and am easily taken to my missing file - exactly how TM should work.
However, I have a folder named "First Draft" that I backed up a while ago, deleted, and now replaced with a new folder with the same name but with different files in them, then Time Machine can only seem to find my current folder. I search "First Draft" in spotlight in TM and then click back, but it can't seem to find it - it just goes back to the first backup date with a blank window. I know it's there because when I take off the search words and navigate through a certain day, I can see the files. Does anyone else have this problem? It's such a detailed problem - sorry it took a long time to explain. I hope you understand my problem. Thanks for your time!

Nevermind - what's even stranger is that right after I posted this - it fixed itself. Wow I hate when that happens...

  • Problems Moving Time Machine to New Hard Drive, Error -8062

I'm in 10.8.5, trying to copy my Backups.backupsb folder from my current 2TB ext drive to a new 4TB drive, following Apples instructions for changing the Time Machine drive.  Both are Seagates, single partitioned (GUIDE) formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
The 2TB is nearly full, hence the move.  This morning after 12 hours of the projected 14 to copy the backups file over, I got an alert that action could not be completed because of Error 8062    I've found pages with suggested fixes from simple restart to more elaborate measures.  The one thing I've done so far is restart and check Disk Permissions for both drives, which read as okay.
But before trying again, since error occured 12 hours into the process (of course it did,) I would like to see if the portion of the file that shows in the folder, size 1.46TB out of the 1.93 total, could be "replaced" by the original folder and thus not have to copy everything again.
One apparent problem is that, after a similar attempt to do similar replacement after a problem 3 hours into copying, instead of asking if I wanted to replace it, it just started copying it with  "(original)" added to the end of the folder name.  That file tagged (original) is the 1.46TB partial copy.  So I deleted the much smaller initial partial copy, but of course the *true* original folder from the active Time Machine will not replace the existing partial copy.  I don't know if removing (original) from its name so it matches will help because I can't; the folder is greyed out and I can't alter the name.  I've tried changing Permissions on it, and tried Terminal commands that will supposedly change the name of a hidden file - nothing works.   Of course, I don't even know if it would ask to "replace" the next time I try, since it didn't do so when the folder names matched on the first attempt.   And since *when* does Finder not ask to "replace" an identically named folder, anyway?  This begs the question if it is simply not going behave like a normal folder with files no matter what I do to it.
Is there anything else I can try?  Barring a solution, any other precautions I might take to try to avoid the joy of anohter "cannot complete" 12 hours in?   I've got multiple backups to make of loads of data, including a full extra backup to keep offsite, and would love to avoid such time wasters.
    Thanks for you kind assistance!
    Brian

This looks right on point and very thorough.  I've started a new backup directly to the new drive.  Since I don't necessarily need the old drive for storage of anything else for the time being, I will probably do as he recommends and keep the old backups ther,  at least until I'm reasonably sure I'm never going to need anything dating back that far, and long enough to confirm the new configuration is stable, and everything is there and backed up off site.
I"m all for simple solutions right now! :^)
