Permissions problem with old Windows XP folders & files

Hi,
I migrated about 8.7 gig of files (21,742) from a set of folders on a Windows machine some time ago. I know keep them on my iMac HD and access them through VMWare Windows XP instances and shared folders.
I want to copy the entire folder to an external drive for taking to client sites, use on windows laptops etc.
However, there are long standing file permission errors within the folder structures that raise the following error during a copy.
"The operation cant be completed because you don't have the permission to access some of the items".
I have tried setting the permissions on the top level folder, setting the bit to "apply to enclosed items". I have run disk repair, permissions repair & I have used Disk Warrior to do the same. I have removed as many of the dodgy Windows style files that are unrecognisable (eg. .LNK files) but no joy.
I tried running a SUDO CHOWN command recommended in another post, but it didn't work.
Does anyone know what might be at the root of the problem. I need an automate solution to this as there are too many folders & files to deal with individually and if I start chucking things out Murphy's law says I will need the ones I ditch.
Thanks
Eric

Download a program called BatChmod and use it to change all of the permissions. It works better than the Finder at fixing permissions on a deep folder hierarchy.
Chown only changes the owner of the files. It doesn't change the posix permissions.
Chmod is the command that changes the posix permissions. You can use BatChmod to do it in a GUI, or use this in Terminalsudo chmod -R u=rwx, go=rx after copying this to the Terminal, drag your folder to the Terminal window and hit return.

  • Problem with old namespace in WSDL file

I have a problem with my WSDL file.  My scenario is SOAP to IDOC.
Originally the ESB data types were configured under namespace urn:test1:xxx  for development purposes.  When it came time to implement and test, we copied the data types from the old name space to a new namespace http://company.com:interface.
After the new objects were created, all the old test objects were deleted, including the old namespace definition.  Now when I generate the WSDL file, the top part of the WSDL file looks correct, but toward the bottom, there are references to the old namespace.
Does anyone know why these reference are appearing, and is there any way to correct this without deleting all my objects and rebuilding everything?
Thanks in advance for any help.  Will award points for help.

Found the problem....the XML namespace in the Message type still contained the old namespace.  When this was changed to the new namespace, second target namespace was no longer generated.

    Repair your Apple software update.
Go to START/ALL PROGRAMS/Apple Software Update. If it offers you a newer version of Apple Software Update, do it but Deselect any other software offered at the same time. Once done, try another iTunes install
If you don't find ASU, go to Control Panel:

When installing 10.5 it terminates with an error message "There is a problem with the Windows  installer package. Contact the package vendor".

I know there's a million threads like this, but I thought I'd record my experience.  I, too, was having the original poster's error when I tried to update iTunes on Windows XP.  I think I was stuck on 10.
I solved it by un-installing iTunes and every other Apple app.  I discovered that Apple Software Update would not un-install as its MSI file could not be found.  I used the "Windows Install Cleanup" tool from Microsoft to remove Apple Software Update from the list of installed programs.  Google "kb290301" for a Microsoft page that includes a download link for it.  After that, I was able to install a fresh copy of iTunes 10.5.2.
I'm not sure why this app's folder and MSI were missing from my computer.  I had once used Laplink PC Mover to move everything from my old computer to this one, and perhaps it missed a bit.

  • Trying to download iOS 5 it says there is a problem with my Windows Installer Package?Help?

I'm trying to download the iOS 5 and I get almost all the way done but then it stops when it's on Status and goes to an error and says "There is a problem with this windows Installer Package.  A program run as part of the set up did not finish as expected.  Contact your support personnel or package vendor."  I have a windows vista computer.. but it should be able to run on it...
Any ideas on how to fix this??
    Thanks!!

'NOsaint09' - I was getting your same error message trying to install the iTunes 10.5 update on my Windows XP machine (in order to install iOS 5 on my iPhone 4). Tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes several times to no avail - same message, no install.
Well, after reading the above post by 'wiss...' i went to start Apple Software Update and was getting another (very cryptic) error message just trying to start ASU. I thought perhaps the problem with this program was causing iTunes 10.5 not to install - so I went to uninstall Apple Software Update using Windows Add/Remove Programs, and got another error message (not allowing the uninstall)!
Knowing there are programs out there just for the purpose of doing a forced & thorough uninstall, I search Cnet Downloads for the best free Uninstaller and downloaded Revo Uninstaller. Used Revo to uninstall Apple Software Update (and all associated files/data it found in registry).
Then to be sure, ran Disk Cleanup in windows to empty the Temp files/folders and Restarted the computer.
Finally, I ran the iTunes Setup.exe for 10.5 and it installed successfully!!  Woohoo! I hope my experience may help others with similar troubles!
And thanks to Wiss for directing me to the problematic ASU program!

"there is a problem with the Windows Installer Package" Does anyone know how I fix this??
My itunes ends up being so out of date becuase I can never upgrade it.
I have a sports kit and want to make sure I am using the most uptodate version
I managed to delete the old version, just in case it was the fact it was about 10 versions out of date that was the problem but now I can't reinstall it at all......
    Please help

Go to Microsoft website to fix install and Unistall problems. Click "Run now" from Fix it to remove all iTunes & related installer files:
    http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall
Be aware that Windows Installer CleanUp Utility will not remove the actual program from your computer. However, it will remove the installation files so that you can start the installation, upgrade, or uninstall over.

Follow Microsoft instructions below on how to take control of the Folder. You may apply this on your C:\Program Files(x86)\iTunes
You may take the ownership of the folder and then use the steps to grant permission to everyone–
Locate the file or folder on which you want to take ownership in windows explorer
Right click on file or folder and select “Properties” from Context Menu
    Click on Security tab
    Click on “Advance”
Now click on Owner tab in Advance Security Settings for User windows
Click on Edit Button and select user from given Change Owner to list if user or group is not in given list then, click on other users or groups. Enter name of user/group and click ok.
Now select User/group and click apply and ok. (Check “Replace owner on sub containers and objects” if you have files and folder within selected folder)
Click ok when Windows Security Prompt is displayed
Now Owner name must have changed.
Now click Ok to exist from Properties windows
Once you have taken the ownership of file or folder
      Grant Permissions to everyone-
Go to C: and then click right click on folder and chooseproperties.
Then go to security tab and click Edit then clickAdd => Advanced.
If you click on advanced now click on Find Now and chooseeveryone and click Ok.
Then again click Ok and now click onAllow => Full control => Ok.

  • Whenever I try to update iTunes to 10.5 I get the message 'There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.'

Whenever I try to update iTunes to 10.5 I get the message 'There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.'
I then uninstalled iTunes to try and reinstall it but I still get the same message for both 10.5 and previous versions, please help!

    My situation:
    - get error when updating iTunes from 1041 to 1050 or above: "There is a problem with this Windows Installer Package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."
My system: XP SP3 with all latest updates.
Found out that the 1051 update fixes a major intrusion possibility during the update process, so I want to get iTunes upgraded to 1051.
Did more research and the following worked (not known if all steps outlined were necessary) (I do not guarantee success nor any more issues as a result):
    - ran: MicrosoftFixit.ProgramInstallUninstall.exe (did JUST the patch option).
    - ran: Windows Installation Removal Tool.exe (uninstalled JUST the iTunes program installer folder) (this does not remove the actual program).
    - removed all apple software update registry entries.
    - removed: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple\Installer Cache\(JUST the software updatefolders) (hidden folder).
    - removed: C:\Documents and Settings\current user\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple\(JUST the software  update folders) (hidden folder).
    - DID NOT need to restart
    - downloaded latest iTunes update (1051)
    - opened using WinRAR
    - extracted all files
    - ran JUST the apple software update MSI
    - it succeeded
    - ran JUST the iTunes MSI
    - it succeeded
    - normally I then uninstall the apple software update program, but DID NOT this time
    - DID NOT need to restart
    Hope it works for you.

I am trying to install iTunes on my PC (using Windows 8.1), but I get this error: "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. Hi,
I just try to install the setup download from apple website for iTune and iCloud.
During the installation, there was error message prompt out "There is a problem with this Windows installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."
I am using Window 7 32 bit. I have try several time for install, but the result is getting same error message.
    Anyone can help on this??????
    Thanks.

I have also tried extracting the individual components to the temp file and attempting to install them individually despite being unable to remove the previous install of Apple Software Updater.  The outcome, both Apple Software Updater and itunes encountered the same error message during the install process.

  • "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package ..." error messages when installing iTunes for Windows 7 64bit

I was promted to upgrade to the new itunes version today (11.0.2.26), but wish I never had as the previous version worked just fine!! I have been unable to install the new version and keep getting the message about there being a problem with the Windows Installer package. I tried following the instructions on this support pages on removing all Apple programs but that didn't work either!! I have Windows 7 64 bit and am close to throwing my PC out of the window!! Quicktime will not re-install correctly either...
Any suggestions will be most gratefully received

Just in case, let's try a standalone AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi install.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe, and select "Extract to iTunesSetup". WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup".
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi to do a standalone ASU install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If not, what error message do you get? (Precise text, please.)

  • There is a problem with this windows installer package. a program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.

I've been seeing this since wednesday. And I tried to get rid of iti via support instrcutions including changing startup settings rum-msconfig etc. and I even uninstalled itunes considering there can be a conflict  or something. Now I cannot even download the old version, and my hands are tied I Cannot sync new songs to my ipod and I coulnd't download any applications to my new iPhonse 4S. I'M using windows XP by the way. none of the support issues solved my problem yet.

Let's try the following user tip with that one:
"There is a problem with this Windows Installer package ..." error messages when installing iTunes for Windows

  • Error when downloading itunes 10.5 that says Product: Apple Software Update -- Error 1722. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package ven

Each time I attempt to download the new itunes 10.5 I keep getting the following error message:
Product: Apple Software Update -- Error 1722. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. Action SoftwareUpdate_UnregServer, location: C:\Program Files\Apple Software Update\SoftwareUpdate.exe, command: /UnregServer
For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Any Ideas of how to solve this one?

After reading all these posts, one by one did not resolve my problem until I got the very end.  Regardless of what step would resolve your problem, these are the steps I would recomment to everyone for a what seems to be a safe and fool-proof upgrade to iTunes 10.5.
    1. Stand alone upgrade to the latest Quicktime version
    2. Go to control panel and "change" then select repair to the following applications in the order specified by the post on Oct 27. (Notice I skipped Quicktime because it had been upgrade manually, and Bonjour did not have a "repair" option)
iTunes; Apple Software Update: Mobile Device Support; Apple Applications Support
Some of these applications may not appear if they do not apply to your configuration (no iPhone, or no iPad, or other apple devices).
Once all updated, I did not need to restart nor launch any applications, I simply went straight into the 10.5 upgrade, and where it normally got stuck, this time the installation continued for a while longer until it completed successfully.
Great work everyone who contributed!  Thank you very much!

  • Itunes doen't install on my 64 bit machine "there is a problem with this windows installer package..."

Ever since ITunes has come out with a dedicated 64 bit version, I have been unable to install Itunes. the first time I had the problem it suggested I unistall itunes which I did. Itunes still will not install however. I have cleared my temp files, moved my music off of my hard drive, everything I can think of and there is no change. Any help someone could provide would be appreciated as I am at the point where I have copied all of the files from the program directory of someone else's installed 64bit itunes and I am running a makeshift version. Should I see if I can get my hands on a disk version of the installer?
Here is the message: "there is a problem with this windows installer package. a program required for this install could not be run. contact your support personnel or package vendor"

Perhaps let's first try updating your Apple Software Update.
Launch Apple Software Update ("Start > All Programs > Apple Software Update"). Does it launch and offer you a newer version of Apple Software Update? If so, choose to install just that update to Apple Software Update. (Deselect any other software offered at the same time.)
If the ASU update goes through okay, try another iTunes install. Does it go through without the errors this time?
