Permissions repair repairs many permissions...why?

I'm wrestling with the Snow Leopard install on an iMac 3.06. I've got the OS installed and updated along with all the other software. I'm attempting to fix printing/scanning problems now, and having not such a good time, but that's a different post.
What I'm inquiring about is this: after my every install move, I repair permissions with Disk Utility, then restart.
However, every time I Repair Permissions, I get a boatload of repairs, all from the same source: System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachine/...
In fact, I just ran Repair Permissions two times in a row, and it repaired those same permissions twice in a row. What's going on?

I agree with Antonio and, I have read posts here about problems migrating from a PowerPC to an Intel machine…
That does not, in & of itself, mean there is any problem with Migration or Setup Assistant or any comparable manual method. If users migrate incompatible or damaged software, preferences, etc. from one Mac to another, then of course problems are possible. However, there is no need to worry that (for example) an Intel Mac will try to execute migrated PPC code or use out-of-date migrated cached info -- if the OS does that, then it was severely damaged by something else since these are fundamental checks the OS should perform routinely as part of its day-to-day operation.
Also, using the Setup Assistant (during the initial setup) is better than using the Migration Assistant later; although they basically perform the same tasks, the first one only sets up one account, whereas MA will sometimes create a second account with some degree of havoc to follow (this is what happened in my case; it took some time to sort it out and I won't be using MA again).
Setup Assistant will offer to migrate multiple existing accounts, just like Migration Assistant. The difference is that on the first user startup, when Setup Assistant runs automatically, there are no existing user accounts & thus no account name conflicts. Since it is not possible to merge two user accounts automatically, running Migration Assistant later, when an account has already been created on the destination Mac with the same name as an existing one on the source Mac, can result in two accounts on the destination Mac, one having a different name. Migration Assistant informs users of the name conflict before the migration begins, & gives the user several choices for what to do about it.
Some users are apparently confused by this or do not pay close attention to the dialog choice options, & end up with user files in two different accounts, each inaccessible from the other. Merging the two accounts manually can be messy, but this is true whether or not Migration Assistant is involved. The problem is the duplicate accounts, each of which contains a conflicting set of files, preferences, & other user settings in their respective home folders.

  • New, updated, even reinstalled. Must repair many permissions. Only OHuh?

Could someone please explain to me why I had a long list of disk permissions to repair

    Continue. First was posted inadvertently.
Nothing on the new Mac Pro except FCP and OSX. Even reinstalled (disk format), because there was a problem with the keyboard. Everything updated. Our internet connection is secure through the Swiss telephone company. We use the computer for nothing except updates.
The list of disk permissions to repair was hundreds long, and included a wide variety of places, like Itunes (haven't even agreed to the contract yet).
We did click yes to a contract while we were running a series of updates on FCP.
    Idly curious.

  • ThinkPad X1 Carbon Repair... why so long?

I purchased a ThinkPad X1 Carbon laptop in early November, since I really needed a PC (I regularly use a Mac) to work with a few applications. However, 3 weeks into using the laptop, its printscreen button fell off, and I have only used it once or twice. I called the customer support and delivered it to my local service centre. I asked customer support how long it would take to repair my laptop, and the representative said "around 5 business days". It has been at least 5 weeks since I dropped off my laptop at the service centre and they told me they're still waiting for the parts to arrive to repair my laptop.
I bought this laptop for school work that requires a PC and now school's starting again, and my laptop is not ready and I don't even know when it'll be ready. I am very frustrated - I mean, it is only the keyboard that needs reparation and why is it taking THIS long? I bought a laptop to use, not to wait for a simple reparation for 5 weeks. And now I have no laptop to use and this is seriously interfering with my school work.
Is there a way to formally file a complaint on this case?
    Any suggestion would help, thanks!

I went through this exact same thing with my X1 Carbon. It took 4-5 weeks to the point they were still waiting on a keyboard replacement that was backordered. Eventually they just said I can get a replacement model and I waited for the X1 Carbon Touch.
I now have the X1C Touch and the touchscreen barely works. It's going back and I am done with Lenovo. This has been ongoing since August and I've had to resort to using a Sony Vaio from 3 years back that has less problems than these brand new "high-end" Lenovo ThinkPads.

  • When I delete many movies, why is my hard drive not showing more space?

I have deleted many many movies, but my hard drive does not register any more space available. I delete my movies from Vuze, using the "delete from computer" button. Shouldn't that trash all copies? I am thinking there must be another copy somewhere for my available space to not change.
I would appreciate any help on this.
    thank you all,

Hello miss.d.p, and welcome to discussions.
Below are 2 main links to assist with Apple Software. The first link covers all the programs that belong to Apple that you can remove through add/remove programs. And then you download and install latest iTunes and sync again.
If for some reason first link does not work you can then look at the second link below. Please post back if you need more assistance.

  • Windows 8 Packages - How Many and Why ?

Just to clarify, beyond the regular Windows 8 drivers etc.
For the "new age" apps I am currently getting the following as needed :
    Lenovo Dependency Package @ 1.5.23.0
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS034404
Lenovo Settings Dependency Package @ 1.1.0.18
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS031946
    Lenovo Settings Metro Application
Firstly, why are there two similar dependency packages with completely different version numbers.
Secondly, what was the other metro app that preload windows 8 people got that we haven't got.
Thirdly what options are you getting in the Settings App, the Dependency Package (1.5.23.0) installs two things I haven't seen before :
System Agent Driver and Service + QuickSnip Service - there is no mention of either anyway.
All in all this rollout is proving to be a bit cloak and dagger - no one knows what is doing what (the very little they do do) and it's all a bit confusing to boot.

  • Mac installers With Many Drives - Why the Wait?

    Hi,
I don't know if this is the right category, I apologize if it's not, but couldnt find anything on this topic.
Something about Mac that really bugs me is that when you have many drives, external drives and partitions like I do, software installers hang for ages on the "Select A Destination" screen while it mysteriously scans these drives, all of which are assigned a yellow "!" sign and you're not allowed to install to anyway! Completely pointless.
So I'm wondering: is there any way to tell OS X to ignore these other drives during software installations?

Are these all off PCIe SATA? or are some of them USB and FireWire?
Apple primarily or 3rd party or any and all?
Have you run Disk Warrior against all your volumes?
I've seen it of course, but never seen it take that much longer, all the drives are either FW800 or PCIe.

  • Many permissions don't seem to get repaired!

My screen went a little crazy today after coming out of sleep mode- lots of patterns and colors no menus available. I restarted and decided to Repair Permissions. On the first pass, Disk Utility repaired many permissions. I ran Permission Repair again and the same permissions were repaired- mostly frameworks and quicktime related items. Is this normal or do I have a problem cropping up?
    Richard

that depends on the particular error messages you see. most are usually harmless. see this link

  • Repair Disk Permissions getting busy with time

When my PowerBook was newer (8 months ago to 2 months ago), permissions repair rarely returned much in the info display window. Now it gives many lines of permission corrections. Often repeating the same ones. For example it often repairs many items in the Resource folder of the Apples DVD player. [ie. - We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./Applications/DVD Player.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/AboutBox.nib/objects.xib. New permissions are 33204]. Always the same permissions. It will display these same corrections upon immediately rerunning the repair from Disk Utility. When the PB was new, ran OSX 10.4.1. Now up to OSX 10.4.4
Most other repairs are Widgets. Many of which I have not used. Thus I have been deleting them.
Why should the content of the DVD player resource folder get constant permission repair attention?
    Harmz

You can safely ignore all of the "We are using special permissions...." messages. They are not errors.
There have been a lot more than with 10.4.0 but they don't mean there is a problem.
It looks bad, but it's not. There is an Apple KB article that explains it further (it needs to be updated to include the Widget, iDVD and any other lines that say "using special permisisons" but the idea is the same.

  • Repairing Permissions (pre-install)

Could somebody clarify something for me. From information elsewhere on here, I have an upgrade procedure which includes using Disc Utility for disc repair - I understand why this cannot be the copy of DU on my internal drive so needs to be from the copy on the install DVD, but it's also recommended that you repair permissions. Is this also from DU on the DVD or should that be from DU on the internal drive?

"Is this also from DU on the DVD or should that be from DU on the internal drive?"
Ordinarily I don't believe you would have to worry about using the DVD for repairing permissions. Since you will already have the DVD up and running the DU for Disk Repair, you might as well go ahead and do it that way.
I believe DU tells you which way to go once you're inside the utility .. on the top portion of it. You can just load it up and see what it says. It is not going to hurt anything, it won't require you to run anything, and you can back right out of it. So load it up and see what it tells you.

    Permissions repair complete
And when I verify Disk Permissions again then everything is the same like there wasnt any repair done.
Why is that? How can I repair it?

They are absolutely NOT fixed in Lion. It doesn't show up on initial installation, nor after any update, as you would expect if that were the cause- it just shows up, and then things begin to go wrong. Maybe they're 'all unrelated', maybe not. Either way, if you're not using ARD/Remote Management, why not just delete it? I have done that successfully in Lion, but have had problems doing so with Snow Leopard- when I try to delete it (with all the permissions set) it tells me the process shown in the photo is running. Strange, as I don't have Screen Sharing on, RM, or Remote Login on!
This is photo evidence of my personal experiences with the issues both in Snow Leopad and Lion:
That second pic is the process in SL that I can't quit and shouldn't be running. The last picture is of my permissions being clean after deleting the file in Lion.
Have a look at this (older article, but relevant, shows what this is and how long it's gone on):
    http://www.macworld.com/article/134165/2008/06/ardagent.html
And this is the associated process: RFBRegisterMDNS -- 'This is started up when you enable Screen Sharing', according to: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10330407-263.html#ixzz1oPDZb1DH
There is more info on that if you Google it.
People on these forums have been very, very nasty about my posting my own problems with this. That only encourages me to try to help others. Ignoring the issue is absolutely not an answer. No one will tell you why the issue can't be repaired, or why it hasn't been fixed in 3-4 OS versions. They also can't explain the associated problems and processes. They just say to forget about it, and get extremely angry if you continue to question that. For that reason alone, I'll continue to post what I know when I see the question.

  • Using Disk Utility to repair Permissions

    Hi there,
When running Disk Utility to Repair Permissions, why does it do it's job and then when you run it again to check, the same files are still being listed again as repaired?
    Thanks.

What; are the messages that keep coming up in the show results window?  What system are you running?
Are they like those described in this Apple document: Mac OS X: Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore

  • Repair Lion permissions from Snow Leopard?

If I have an external drive with a clone of a Lion system on it, can I use a computer running Snow Leopard to repair permissions on it?
    Thank you,

David, if you had a 2012 Chevy, and you lost the computer program that ran the tuneup/automatic readings, would you go get another one from a 2011 Chevy, and think it was going to find the right stuff to fix?  I have seen posting rom people who tried it, and things got so cofusing and messed up, a reinstall of the OS seemed the only way out.
Thank you for the added info. I will take your word that some people have done it with ill consequences. I am just trying to understand the mechanism by which that would result.
In answer to the question, "Should I start up from a Mac OS X install disc to repair disk permissions?" Apple says, "This is not necessary because Disk Utility looks at the receipts on the volume being checked" http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1452. That led me to think that it might not matter which system was invoking the repair, which was why I asked my question. In other words, does Disk Utility in ML or L run a different routine than in SL, or is it the same routine regardless of the system that Disk Utility is on? That is what I am trying to understand.

  • I want to install a WiFi- USB dongle. I tried to install two. Installation seems to go well until when the 'Install' button appears but cannot be selected. It stays faded. I've tried repairing permissions but there were apparently no repairs necessary

    Can't install non-Apple software.

    hi Bern
    Firstly welcome to Crowd Support
The Australian Communications Industry Forum (ACIF) Credit Management code states that Telstra must perform s credit assessment when a customer is applying to us for credit.
For our Credit Assessments to be passed there are many factors of information considered to determine if the Credit Assessment is satisfied.
There are many reasons why a Credit application may be declined, and one of the most common is due to the new Customer not having any previous history with Telstra.
While this may be frustrating for you, in the circumstance of a Mobile Phone contract being involved, we really do need to be sure that we have the correct billing information, up to date contact details and also viability to pay bills on time.
There is a process where this decline decision can be disputed, and I would be more than happy to lodge this dispute for you if you could provide me with some information.
I will send you a PM so that we can work together offline to lodge this dispute.
