Permissions repair takes hours, never finishes

I've been doing some looking around the forums but haven't found an answer to my question.
PROBLEM: Permissions repair takes FOREVER. I started a permissions repair task on the startup drive yesterday afternoon and it hadn't finished by this morning. In fact it said it had 12 more hours to go. Right from the start there are hundreds of entries about ACLs found but not expected. After awhile the list stops populating. And just when you think the thing has locked up, you hear disk activity and see the list change.
WHY DID I RUN PR?: We'd recently created a new user account on that machine and Final Cut Pro was crashing a lot on the new account.
OTHER TIDBITS:
- The account I ran PR from is an administrator account
- There are multiple administrator accounts on this machine
- This machine has a lot of disk: startup drive, project drive, scratch drive (2 disc RAID0) and an external FW800 RAID1 drive. (I ran permissions repair on the startup drive only.)
QUESTION: It seems like we have serious ACL pollution on this machine. Is there a way to clear them out and "start over"? I can reinstall if necessary, but would prefer not to.

Hi,
Since Permissions Repair is checking permissions on (I believe) most every file in your system, it's not unreasonable to expect that the more files on your system, the longer the repair process will take. Twelve hours does seem a bit long, but as long as PR seems to be working and not hanging, if I were you, I'd pick a time when the computer won't be needed for anything else and let PR run to completion. Also, it seems that the remaining time calculation is an extrapolation based on the time already spent to do the completed work, and if some of that work took a proportionately long time, the 12-hour estimate could be a significant overestimation. Since you aren't eager to do a reinstall, letting PR run to completion seems to be the most prudent thing to do.
Hope this helps,
Ken

  • How long should permissions repair take?

I have a MBP 3,1 23.4GHz/4GB/320GB 7200RPM HD running OS X 10.5.7. I remember permissions repair, a long time ago, being a relatively quick process. It has waxed and waned over time, and at times there were many messages up (SUID...) that I was told to ignore.
Today, all messages are gone. I ran a permissions repair, then ran a second one and timed it. It took 5 minutes 9 seconds. Of that time, I got the barber pole for about 4 minutes and the crawling line for 1.
That seems awfully long. Any comments?
    Thanks!

    Hi Donna,
I've never heard of it taking this long, so something doesn't sound right.
How long has it been since you've run it?
I would quit the process and run Verify to see if the HD directory is ok. If it won't let you quit, try a force quit (command-option-esc), and if that doesn't work, you may have to do a forced shutdown (hold power button down for about 10 seconds/until MBP shuts down).
The "whirring" sound may be your fans revving up now and then.

  • Repair Disk Permissions taking 19 hours so far...

I semi-regularly use Onyx to repair disk permissions. (probably once a month). It normally takes around 30 minutes to complete. Yesterday my system started hanging so I ran repair disk from the boot cd. This was fine and took around fifteen minutes. Then I ran repair disk permissions from the boot CD. After around 30 minutes it said '1 minute remaining'. That was 19 hours ago....
It's still chugging along so it sounds like somethings happening - but the progress bar and remaining time have not changed.
So my question is - should I let it finish? How long should I wait? Is there anything else I could check?

    Update to the Update!
I ran repair disk permissions from my profile and it finished (around 7 minutes). I've attached the log below in case it points to anything specific?

  • Should it take sooo long to install Flash on a new Mac book pro?  And should the CC panel say "syncing files" and look like it will never finish?

I Have CC and it's taking so long to install on my new Mac book pro.  The CC panel also says its syncing files down at the bottom, it's so slow it looks like it will never finish.  Should it be taking this long?

I had an issue where I had to wipe my mac as well. What you have to do to format the hard drive and reinstall is this:
Restart the computer while holding down the option key. Choose the recovery disc. Find the main hard disc and hit format. Then you can reinstall Lion via the internet, it takes a while though, my computer took 5 hours or so.
For your first question, if you got the family version of office, I believe you have 3 computers you can authorize it on. If you are not sure, look it up in the apple store.
For the second: Time machine would probably be your best option, but I would reccomend restoring from a backup before you were having problems, and restore that one (put new files you need on another external or a digital-online storeage site such as dropbox.) To restore a backup, restart your computer and hold command+R and select "Restore from Time Machine Backup" (for more information go here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427 )
I don't believe tere is anything else you need to do, but I am new to macs, so I may not be the best source, but this is what I have found/have had to do.

  • Repair permissions now takes 15-30 minutes

In leopard, permissions repair was slooooow. but upon moving to SL, it got a lot faster - that is, until just recently, probably coinciding with the 10.6.2 update, where it now gets stuck at the "2 minutes remaining" mark for approximately 15-30 minutes. it is at this point, we get the message:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
    anyone else experience this?
btw - this is on my wife's white macbook, not my MBP.

i've seen this issue before - but my problem is that repairing permissions takes up to half an hour now. on my MBP, which runs the same version of OSX and has a much bigger drive, repairing permissions takes under 5 minutes.
i'm wondering if it's an unrelated issue. is it possible to see what's hanging up the permissions repair?

I rented a movie a few hours ago and never finished it.  I can't view it on my Apple TV nor on my Computer.  When I go to rent it again it says you have already rented this movie, but I can't find it anywhere.  How do I watch the remainder of the rental?

I had the same issue with my apple tv 3rd generation. I rented Sinister and selected the "rent and watch now" option. Half way through the movie I accidentally pressed the menu button. When I looked for the rented movie on my apple tv I could not find it. Not even above the movie pannel where "purchased" and "top movies" comes up on the main menu. the apple tv suggests to go to settings>downloads but I don't have that option. I did go to settings> itunes store> check rentals but that didnt work either. It took too long to even check. Thank you because this SOLUTION worked great.
SOLUTION: How to reset apple tv 3 3rd generation to view rented movies:on the apple tv remote: press and hold "menu" to go to the main menu. Select SETTINGS> GENERAL >RESET >RESET ALL SETTINGS. After the apple tv resets, input all your information again and your rented movies should be visible when you cruise above the "movies" section. THANK YOU!!
Apple needs to solve this issue because honestly it took me 3 hours and a half to watch a movie that only lasted 2 BECAUSE I wast trying to solve the issue, reseting and all. blahh.

  • Recently my pc crashed and I had to have a new profile built.  now when syncing my iphone to the computer the sync gets stuck on step 8 and "syncing artwork"  It never finishes syncing...just sits there for hours.  How do I fix this?

Recently my pc crashed and I had to have a new profile built.  Now when syncing my iphone 4s to the computer the sync gets stuck on step 8 and "syncing artwork"  It never finishes syncing...just sits there for hours.  Subsequently most of my music and apps are missing from my iphone because it never finishes syncing.  How do I fix this?

    1) ensure iTunes is authorized for your iTunes store account(s)
    2) connect your device and right-click or control-click it in the iTunes Source list, then choose transfer purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.
    3) sync the device
iTunes will wipe the iPhone but, since you transferred your purchases in the previous step, your content will be in your library and you can re-populate the iPhone with it.
above works for purchases from the iTunes store. for everything else, check out this post by Zevoneer.

    Hi henry1963,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
It sounds like your are correct and shuffle is turned on in iTunes. Please use the following article as a reference for turning shuffle off.
iTunes 11 for Mac: Ways to play songs
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12131
You can play music in iTunes in various ways.
    Shuffle or repeat songs
    Do any of the following:
Turn shuffle on or off: Click the Shuffle button. Shuffle is on when the arrows are blue.
Shuffle albums or groupings: Choose Controls > Turn On Shuffle > “by Albums” (or “by Groupings”). iTunes plays the songs in the order in which they appear on the album or in the grouping, and then chooses another album or grouping at random.
    I hope this helps,

  • Import picture never finish

    Hi,
When Import a picture from a file, it imports the picture but never finish it.
I Force Quit iPhoto, and the picture was imported.

    Chiky:
Where is the file located when you're importing?
Try deleting the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder. Also run Disk Utility and repair disk permissions.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Permissions repair in 10.5

I just got a MacBookPro with 10.4.10 installed and the OEM Leopard update included. Before doing anything else, I immediately updated to 10.5 and everything seemed to go without a hitch.
Then I started moving over some apps, files, etc. and ran permissions repair several times. Every time, it takes at least 10 minutes to finish.
When done, there are dozens and dozens (possibly hundreds) of these:
ACL found but not expexted on "System/Library/User Template/... wording continues with mostly zh... or languages/french, etc, etc.
It takes this long and shows all of these even when I run it twice in a row.
Does anyone know what "ACL" is and how/what I can do to get rid of it - I am tired of waiting for 10 minutes only to have the same thing happen again the next time.

Yeah, quite common to get bunches of items "repaired" after doing major updates like 10.5.7 and it is the recommended way of doing such an update to avoid problems later on.
You will also get a large number of items that never seem to be repaired. It seems that after the 10.5.4 update or so, Apple decided to move some things around and left symbolic links in the original places where the files were. Unfortunately, a symbolic link (aka "shortcut" in Windoze-speak) does not have permissions per-se; it just points to the file in its new location. So, since then we get oodles of warnings every time, with no ill effects.
You did boot from the Install DVD #1 and do a Repair Disk on the startup volume, just to make sure it has no issues, right?
