Permissions Warnings explanation please

My 2010 27" iMac 2.8Ghz has been running erratically lately and although Diskwarrior 4.4 didn't find anything wrong, I ran Disc Utility to check the permissions and got the following:
Warning: SUID file “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent” has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file “usr/lib/sa/sadc” has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file “usr/libexec/authopen” has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file “usr/libexec/security_authtrampoline” has been modified and will not be repaired.
Have I got anything to worry about? I have update to the latest OS 10.10.3 and have Sophos Antivirus which is automatically updated.
Thanks

They don't mean anything except what they state. The Permissions Repair is extremely ignorant of everything except what Apple programmed into it on the last update. It looks at the system files and compares them to the "receipts" that were installed when the original software was installed. If Apple changed any of the permissions on those files after the initial deployment, the Repair Permissions database knows nothing of them.
Also, if you change permissions on something for a valid reason, it has no idea that you changed them. It merely notes that they don't match the Receipts.
Several of yours are listed here: Mac OS X: Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore - Apple Support
I don't know how often they update that list. It was last updated prior to the most recent updates.
Are you Repairing Disk Permissions for a specific reason? Generally, there is no need.

  • Permissions Repair Warning Explanation Please

    Hello Everyone,
It's been a while since I last posted on the Apple forums.
I just installed the Mac OSX 10.6.3 v1.1 Combo Update.
After doing so, I launched Disk Utility and ran "Repair Permissions".
At the very end of the permissions repair log, I found the following warning:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Does anyone know what this means, or why it cannot be repaired?
If ARDAgent means Apple Remote Desktop Agent, as I suspect, then I am mystified, because, to my knowledge, I never use Apple Remote Desktop for anything, unless it is possibly used during the Software Update process without my knowledge.
I just want to know who has modified it, and why its permissions can't be repaired.
My computer specs are in my sig below.
    Thanks!

Hello Niel. Thanks for your response. I just did some checking, and it appears that Mac users have been reporting this -- and similar messages by Disk Utility -- since at least three years ago when Leopard was first introduced.
In fact, I found a page here on the Apple site called "Mac OS X: Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore".
It can be accessed at the following URL:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?viewlocale=en_US
So I suppose that, as you have stated, the message can be ignored.

  • This history look right? After Repairing Disk Permissions WARNINGS exist.

I just repaired disk permissions on my iMac, does the history look OK? Plenty of WARNINGS at the end of the history. I am not too concerned with the ACL stuff.

  • Crystal 2008 - New Page Setup options - need explanation please

I have been unable to locate documentation on the new Page Setup screen for Crystal 2008.  I am specifically looking on detailed documentation about the following check boxes:
    Printer Options:
         No Printer
    Page Options section:
Dissociate Formatting Page Size and Printer Paper Size
    Margins section:
         Adjust Automatically.
Can someone please detail for me these options.  I'd like to know why I would use them and how do they work when combinations of them are selected.  I am most interested in the second option (above), but would like explanations about all of them.
    Thank you.

I do not think the No Printer option is valid for us as our reports are not web based.
Does the Adjust Automatically apply to the reports as they are run from a runtime client?  or does this just adjust for design mode?
This is why I am asking about the 'Dissociate Formatting Page Size and Printer Paper Size'.  It sounds like this is the setting we may want to check when creating our reports before we distribute to runtime clients.
Here is why I want to know.
We develop our reports to fit 8.5 inch x 11 inch paper.  We distribute our reports to our clients along with the runtime merge modules.  We have a VB.Net 2005 program that our non-vb.net software application executes in order to print the reports (using the Crystal for .NET methods, etc.) from our software application.
Some of our clients are in Europe.  They use A4 paper.  We have re-designed some of our reports so the fields will fit within both paper sizes (8.5x11 and A4).  However, we have over 500 reports we distribute, so we have not modified all reports.  Therefore, prior to Crystal XI, we recommended to our runtime users that if the data on the report did not fit on the A4 paper (it was truncated), then they need to go into the printer properties (from the printer dialog box...these are users running the report, not developers) and change the report from portrait to landscape before they print.  This would print the report landscape with data across 8.5", and then white space on the right/remainder of the page, but all the data would print, nothing truncated.  After we installed Crystal XI, using this option of selecting landscape at print time, no longer worked.  The report would print with the orientation in which it was created (in our case portrait) regardless of what the user selected from printer properties.
This is why I am asking about the 'Dissociate Formatting Page Size and Printer Paper Size'.  Can someone at SAP elaborate on this please?

  • Repair Permissions Warnings

I keep getting the following warning messages in Leopard when I repair permissions. Even if I repair again, I get the same messages. I did a complete erase and install of Leopard. Then I don't get the warnings. But when I upgrade to 10.5.1 I get the warnings again. Something in the upgrade is doing this. System works fine, just wish I could eliminate this.
Anyone know what is going on here, or have had similar behavior?

    Permissions repair complete

I'm getting a very similar set of "warnings" when I repair permissions. This is after a new install of Leopard followed by using migration assistant to copy my documents from an external drive. I tried re-running the 10.5.1 upgrade using the stand alone installer instead of software update but this did not fix the problem. The name of my boot volume is a single word.
I had problems with Office apps related to lack of permission for some accessory files but fixed the problems after deleting all the preference files associated with Office. I also had to copy my address book files over from the backup for similar reasons. Quite a mess really.

    MacBook 6, 1
    OS X 10.6.8

let me know of any details that i can give that will help

Shut down MB and now it wont start no matter what i do.
fsck comes up with modified then nothing each time i enter SUM.
I'd say that the filesystem is hosed if fsck in SUM shows the filesystem has been modified. At this point call Apple, have the computer serial number handy and order a replacement DVD. It will cost you around $20.00. In SUM, you can run this command to get the serial number->
    /usr/sbin/ioreg -l | /usr/bin/grep IOPlatformSerialNumber
From the DVD you can run Disk Utility and check the smart status of the internal hard drive.

    HI Marcus,
the system always seems to be dragging
Check to see how much available space there is on the startup disk. Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. *Make sure you always have a minimum of 15% free disk space.*
If free disk space isn't an issue, help here for the SSBOD

  • Nvidia ethernet config options, need explanation please!

I've been having lots of disconnects/crashes in online games I play. At first I thought it was my video card or some bios/windows setting, but I recently found (from reading game forum posts of people with the same problem/motherboard) that the onboard ethernet was causing all the disconnects. The other people on the game forum all bought a NIC card to use instead of the onboard LAN and said it completely fixed the problems.
I'm wondering if the problem could be from bad ethernet config options in the "NVIDIA Web-based interface" which you can get to after installing the firewall software. I have no clue what any of these options do, and was wondering if something in this could be an alternative to buying a NIC card. Does anyone have any experience with these or could offer a quick explanation?

I do not think the No Printer option is valid for us as our reports are not web based.
Does the Adjust Automatically apply to the reports as they are run from a runtime client?  or does this just adjust for design mode?

  • My MacBook Air keeps coming up with an error message stating "Your computer was restarted because of a problem" It has been happening almost daily now.  Any explanations, please?

I seem to be getting this message fairly regularly.  Even on start-up, I get a message in half a dozen languages, stating the the computer shutdown due to an error.  I have spoken to support and conducted a disk repair but the next day it happened again.  Does anyone have any ideas? I have copy/pasted part of the report below.

If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select the most recent panic log under the heading System Diagnostic Reports on the left. If you don't see that heading, select
View ▹ Show Log List   from the menu bar. Post the entire contents of the panic report — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports.

  • Time Machine Permissions Issue "fetching" Please help!

    Hello,
I did a fresh install of Mavericks and have accessed my time machine many times since then.  Tonight I tried to access it as usual, but all of a sudden I cannot access any files.
It says I don't have permission...nothing has changed!?  "The folder “Pictures” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents."
I have done ALOT of research, even on these forums, and have tired advice from Lych Davis (I think is his name), but it didn't work.  The permission says "fetching".
I have tried to add me in the get info tab....Nothing shows up
I have tried to delete the "fetching" acount....It won't die
I went to my Users and Groups and my Group is, by default, set to "staff."
I tried to "verify disk" in Disk Utitlity..it didn't help.
Please help me...I have done NOTHING different, not even an OSX update since I accessed my TM a few days ago.  Please help me.

  • CCC/Permissions/Admin problem, Please help

I am attempting to clone Volume Alpha Tiger, which is stored on an external drive, onto Volume Beta 250, which resides on a G4 Power PC. I am managing this exchange with CCC via an Intel iMac linked by Ethernet and File sharing. Volume Beta already has a system on it which I want CCC to replace and archive old files.
The problem is, after running CCC I am told I cannot proceed until:
The account that you used to mount the destination volume does not have sufficient privileges to create or modify this item. Modify the permissions of this item or its parent folder on the destination computer or exclude it from this backup task to eliminate the error message. Alternatively, you can try backing up to a different folder on this volume, or back up to a disk image on this volume instead.
I have gone to Beta 250, opened permissions (Command I), which tells me the System is the Owner. I figured that CCC wants the owner changed to my admin name. I unlock the volume, put in my account serial, unlock confirmed. Then I change Owner to my account name, put in my account serial. This results in a loop with a window telling me I do not have permission to change certain items on the volume. Back to square one.
Assuming I have understood the message correctly, how do I get the priviliges/permissions correct to get CCC to do its work?
Am I to understand that individual folders on the Beta 250 require permissions changed?
Would I be better off giving Unix instructions via Terminal? If so how should they be expressed?

Thank you for your consideration and your thoughts.
Had I an alternative such as you describe I would have employed it. I have no experience of TDM and after reading a little about it it seems I have to involve myself with more hardware/software and another learning curve. If I can understand the Permissions and Priviliges issue that CCC identifies, I can replace the whole OS from the back-up disk. I will be able to use the computer normally and if the Apple install disk continues to fail it will confirm the hardware issue and I can act accordingly. I have a complete mirror of the OS on an external drive and it should have been a simple process to transfer the back-up onto the G4 using CCC. But CCC has minor issues which I seek to resolve.
My experiments suggest there is probably a hardware problem which so far eludes me. I have removed and re-seated every card, relocated Ram and HDD connections as explained in my earlier post. Although my HDD is repeatedly verified as OK by different utilities, I nevertheless intend trying a drive swap to be certain. I have even started up with mouse and keyboard disconnected in case a faulty USB might be the source of hardware problems. All to no avail.
Loading a Leopard install disc results in it loading then freezing, failing to complete the loading process. Loading a Tiger install disk results in a kernal panic. Both discs are supplied by Apple and are not machine specific.
Since writing this post I have succeeded in booting up the computer normally on repeated occassions, but still cannot use install disks. My last CCC attempt clearly improved the OS even thought there are issues, according to CCC with certain files. Hence my querie regarding Permissions and Priviliges.
That is the subject which would help me most at this stage.

  • Cannot allocate memory - Concept Explanation Please

    Hello all,
    Just wanted to confirm something.
I compile a helloword class and the javac does it job.
Now when I am preparing a larger program from ant like so: /usr/local/ant/bin/ant prepareI get:Buildfile: build.xml
[property] java.io.IOException: java.io.IOException: Cannot allocate memory
    [property]     at java.lang.UNIXProcess.<init>(UNIXProcess.java:148)
[property]     at java.lang.ProcessImpl.start(ProcessImpl.java:65)So more memory is required for different compilations of programs, right?
Is there a way, I can allocate all (most) memory to the javac compiler?
If I have some of my theory and terminology mixed please correct me.
    Thanks all

  • Brief Explanation Please

    Hello,
I was recently given some good advise here pertaining to a script. In case you don't check the link I do not need a workable script here, that has been taken care of but thank you anyway (is not necessary to answer this question).
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/26354845#26354845
    However, I understand the change in the dictionary portion of QuickTime Player I am still unclear as to why there is a specifier error with the fixes that I came up with myself. Could someone explain to me please why there is a specifier error with this script;
set this_sound to (((path to folder from System domain) as string) & "Sounds:Submarine.aiff") as alias
    tell app "QuickTime Player"
    open this_sound
set close after completion of document 1 to true
    play document 1
    end tell
Hope you all have a great day!
    dofromon

    Hello
Just for the record, there has never been a property named "close after completion" of "movie" object or "document" object in QuickTime Player (7 or X).
In QuickTime Player 7, there're "close when done" and "quit when done" properties of "document" object, which is indeed "movie" object.
In QuickTime Player 7, the term "movie" is defined as synonym for "document" in its AppleScript dictionary (this synonym definition is hidden in aete resource), that is why the term "movie" in source code in context of QuickTime Player 7 is compiled as "document" in AppleScript editor.
And the reason why the expression such as:
set close after completion of document 1 to true
does not throw compilation error in context of QuickTime Player X is that AppleScript compiler parses it NOT as
    (set
        ("close after completion"
            (of (document (1))))
        (to (true)))
    but as
    (set
        (close
            (after
                (completion
                    (of (document (1))))))
        (to (true)))
    where
(close (after (completion (of (document (1))))))
    is interpreted as
(close ("insertion point" (after (completion (of (document (1)))))))
and this (close ...) construct is expected to return something to be set to true.
Of course this should fail at run-time with various reasons, which include the said coercion error (provided that "completion" is not mere user variable name but defined as constant in QuickTime Player X), but compiler doesn't care and happily yields a non-sense byte-code.
Hope this may help you understand the situation better,
    H
