Persist Entity Bean in flat file?

Is it possible to persist entity bean in a flat file? I need to persist a single value (sequence number) and I can not use database to do so.
I would need to run this in a clustered environment and need to recover the value if something goes wrong. The statefull bean would almost do except when one server fails before it replicates value onto another box.
thx.

I'm also trying to get a grip on the best way to handle some static application properties in a clustered environment. My need mostly relates to
a need to read in some flat file type properties and then store them someplace
where business logic can call them as needed.. Like a static hashmap or
something. But someone mentioned Entity beans, BMP, etc..
Now.. here's the strange part of the message.
Back in 1999 I traveled over to our west coast office in San Francisco. I was meeting and greeting the staff there and along the way I had a short
meeting with someone named Bisera Ferrero. I mention this event because I
was really impressed with the beauty and charm of Bisera. Therefore, I guess
I'm a fan. I rememered the name.. a little. Really, I had sort of forgotten
about it until reading this forum this morning. So.. who knows. I guess
there could be a lot of Bisera Ferrero names on our planet.
Good luck in your quests..

  • Storing Persistent Data In A Flat File -- Design Ideas?

    I have an application that needs to store a small amount of persistent data. I want to store it in a flat config file, with categories and key-value pairs. The flat file might look something like this:
    John:
    hair=green
    weight=170
    Sally:
    eyes=blue
    weight=110
    and so on. My application will initialize a custom class with the data stored in the file, and then work with that class. When updates are made to the data as the application runs, the file will need to be changed too (so that changes will be reflected even if the program crashes, eg).
    What is the best way to implement this? Does Java have any built in classes that allow for something like this? I was thinking about Serializable (which I've never used), but I want the file to be human readable and editable. How about using RandomAccessFile? I'm guessing there is a better way....
    Thanks for any advice,
    John

    I'd use a XML structure; classes for XML storing/parsing are part of the API, the structure of XML is flexible enough and human-readable.

  • Confused with Entity Beans

    Hello:
    I ve been trying to learn EJBs using Wrox's Professional EJB.
    At page number 145 sequence diagram, it shows that ( for a bean
    managed persistance Entity bean ) every find<METHOD>(args) invoked on
    an EJBHome object will be delegated to a corresponding
    ejbFind<METHOD>(args) method on the bean implementation object. I m a
    bit confused here.
    1. Since from the OO point of view, "find" is about finding, shouldn t
    this have been a method on some kind of broker object, that should
    have created/found the corresponding implementation objects and
    returned the corresponding handles ( object references ). In the case
    of findInRange() that returns multiple objects this becomes more
    apparent, wherein one need to have an ejb implementation object to
    start with in order to get the collection of objects he has been
    looking for. Where did I 'didn t get it'
    2. One of my friends says Container managed persistence ( CMP ) is not
    at all popular due to the inefficiency compared to BMP, and that only
    very few projects will be actually using it. Is there any truth in
    this.
    3. Is there a vendor neutral newsgroup ( and more specific that
    comp.java.lang.help ) for posting ejb related discussions.
    Thanks

    this.It depends on application requirements. CMP are perfect for writing
    simple persistance objects with "one object per one DB table" pattern.
    From efficiency point of view weblogic does it's best to optimize
    bean's behaiviour. You shouldn't be concerned about it.
    BMPs are good when you need to deal with coarse-grained persistance.
    I'd recomend you to get hands on experience with CMPs and
    BMPs. Practice is invaluable source of knowlege.

  • NotSerializableException on Entity Bean Client

    hi
    Am new to entity beans, specifically Bean-Managed Persistent Entity Beans. I am trying to return a DTO back from the business method of entity bean. In short the code in bean is this
    public EmployeeDetailsDTO getEmployeeDetails(int empNo){
         // Code to fetch emp details
         // Set values in DTO
        return empDetails;
    }On the client side its
    AccountPK pk = new AccountPK("4");
    account = home.findByPrimaryKey(pk);
    EmployeeDetailsDTO empDetails = account.getEmployeeDetails(4);However, i get this excpetion on the cleint.
    java.rmi.MarshalException: error marshalling return; nested exception is: java.io.NotSerializableException:com.tpt.practice.entityBeans.bmp.EmployeeDetailsDTO
    Note: The EmployeeDetailsDTO does implement the Serializable interface. Any other reason why i should get this error?

    Is it possible that a field on the DTO is throwing the Serializable Exception? ..is serialVersionUID manually declared? Perhaps that would help?

    There is a problem with generated key
    that code won't work:
    @Id
    @GeneratedValue(strategy=GenerationType.AUTO)
    public int getId() {
    return id;
    But, if I remove line "GeneratedValue", it can insert into the BD, once only :s
    The ID is set to 0 by default, so I can't add more than one entity :s

    Although I am not super familiar with Jboss, my guess is that looks like the ejb xml sheet is not specifying the persistance type correctly for an entity bean. Take a look at your ejb xml sheet or post it if necessary.

  • Entity beans caching non-persistent data between transactions

    Some of the properties in our entity bean implementation classes are not declared
    in our descriptor files, and therefore, are non-persistent (we are using container-managed
    persistence); I will refer to these properties as "non-persistent properties".
    In WebLogic 5.1, we've noticed that the non-persistent properties are cached in
    between transactions. For instance, I ask for a particular Person (Person(James)),
    and I set one of the non-persistent properties (Property(X)) inside Transaction(A).
    In Transaction(B) (which is exclusive of Transaction(A)), I access Property(X)
    and find that it is the same value as I had set in Transaction(A)- this gives
    the appearance that non-persistent entity properties are being cached in between
    transactions.
    The same appears to hold true in WebLogic 7 SP1, however, we must use the "Exclusive"
    concurrency-strategy to maintain this consistency.
    I am worried that this assumption we are making of non-persistent properties is
    not valid in all cases, and the documentation does not promise anything in the
    way of such an assumption. I am worried that the container could kill the Person(James)
    entity implementation instance in the pool after Transaction(A), and create a
    new Person(James) instance to serve Transaction(B)- once that happens our assumption
    fails.
    "Database" concurrency strategy seems to fail our assumption on a regular basis,
    but that makes sense, since the documentation states that the "database will maintain
    the cache", and the container seems more willing to kill instances when they are
    finished with, or create new instances for new transactions.
    So my question is this: What is exactly guaranteed by the "Exclusive" concurrency-strategy?
    Will the assumption that we've made above ever fail under this strategy?
    Thanks in advance for any help.
    Regards,
    James

    It simply means that there is only one entity bean instance per PK in the
    server, and transaction which uses it locks it exclusively.

  • How to upload a BLOB file from CMP Entity Beans

    Hi,
    I want to upload a .xls file as a BLOB using CMP. And also to get back the BLOB from the database through CMP. I am using oracle 8i DataBase and weblogic 8.1 server with weblogic workshop as IDE.
    I don't have any idea to save a file as BLOB.
    Could any one please help me to solve this as it is very urgent.
    regards
    KumudaRajarshi

    I would just put the .xls file into a byte array in a
    class that implements the serializable
    interface. This class then becomes a column in your
    database table(as a blob) represented by an
    attribute in your entity bean. On sun appserver7
    serializable is mapped to a blob column in the
    database by default. You don't have to deal with a
    blob at all in the code, just your
    serializable type. You may have to use a type 2
    driver to get it to work with files
    over 4 or 5k.
    See the appserver7 EJBdevguide, page 92 for details.could you descrbe the detail how to use the class to become the column as blob?
    is that any sample code can be provided?
    it's very urgent, please help..
    thanks

  • Query about reentrant in ejb-jar.xml file(in case of entity Bean)

    Hi all friends,
    I am new to EJB I couldn't understand in ejb-jar.xml file in case Entity Bean[<reentrant>False</reentrant>
    &<reentrant>true</reentrant>]what is the function of this tag and what is the effect of value true and false of this tag.Can any one please explain it.
    Regards
    Bikash

    Hi,
    Re-entrant tag is used in the ejb-jar.xml to notify the container if you would want your bean to call itself through another bean.
    Most of the time you would want it to be set to FALSE because you would have to consider the multi-threading issues if you set it TRUE.

  • Can I deploy the entity bean in different jar files?

    I have an application EAR, which contains several JARs. I have an entity bean A that has relationships with 2 other different entity beans B and C in the same DB. Now, I have to deploy this entity A together with B in AB.jar, and A with C in AC.jar. Both AB.jar and AC.jar are modules of the same application EAR file. They all use the same data sources to the same database, and named by different <ejb-name>.
    I have no problem with deploying the app to WebLogic 8.1. But the JSP page accessing entity A got errors. Sometime, it got error complaining that the container-generated ejbFindAccount mehtod is abstract.
    My questions are,
    Can an entity bean be defined twice in 2 different jars?
    When container load AB.jar and AC.jar, does it generate the finder methods twice?
    I guess there are some name conflicts going on here. What should I do to avoid it?
    Any comments are very much appreciated.

    where business logic can call them as needed..

  • Noob Question: Problem with Persistence in First Entity Bean

    Hey folks,
    I have started with EJB3 just recently. After reading several books on the topic I finally started programming myself. I wanted to develop a little application for getting a feeling of the technology. So what I did is to create a AppClient, which calls a Stateless Session Bean. This Stateless Bean then adds an Entity to the Database. For doing this I use Netbeans 6.5 and the integrated glassfish. The problem I am facing is, that the mapping somehow doesnt work, but I have no clue why it doesn't work. I just get an EJBException.
    I would be very thankfull if you guys could help me out of this. And don't forget this is my first ejb project - i might need a very detailed answer ... I know - noobs can be a real ....
    So here is the code of the application. I have a few methods to do some extra work there, you can ignore them, there are of no use at the moment. All that is really implemented is testConnection() and testAddCompany(). The testconnection() Methode works pretty fine, but when it comes to the testAddCompany I get into problems.
    Edit:As I found out just now, there is the possibility of Netbeans to add a Facade pattern to an Entity bean. If I use this, everythings fine and it works out to be perfect, however I am still curious, why the approach without the given classes by netbeans it doesn't work.
    public class Main {
        private EntryRemote entryPoint = null;
        public static void main(String[] args) throws NamingException {
            Main main = new Main();
            main.runApplication();
        private void runApplication()throws NamingException{
            this.getContext();
            this.testConnection();
            this.testAddCompany();
            this.testAddShipmentAddress(1);
            this.testAddBillingAddress(1);
            this.testAddEmployee(1);
            this.addBankAccount(1);
        private void getContext() throws NamingException{
            InitialContext ctx = new InitialContext();
            this.entryPoint = (EntryRemote) ctx.lookup("Entry#ejb.EntryRemote");
        private void testConnection()
            System.err.println("Can Bean Entry be reached: " + entryPoint.isAlive());
        private void testAddCompany(){
            Company company = new Company();
            company.setName("JavaFreaks");
            entryPoint.addCompany(company);
            System.err.println("JavaFreaks has been placed in the db");
        }Here is the Stateless Session Bean. I added the PersistenceContext, and its also mapped in the persistence.xml file, however here the trouble starts.
    import javax.ejb.Stateless;
    import javax.persistence.EntityManager;
    import javax.persistence.PersistenceContext;
    @Stateless(mappedName="Entry")
    public class EntryBean implements EntryRemote {
        @PersistenceContext(unitName="PersistenceUnit") private EntityManager manager;
        public boolean isAlive() {
            return true;
        public boolean addCompany(Company company) {
            manager.persist(company);
            return true;
        public boolean addShipmentAddress(long companyId) {
            return false;
        public boolean addBillingAddress(long companyId) {
            return false;
        public boolean addEmployee(long companyId) {
            return false;
        public boolean addBankAccount(long companyId) {
            return false;
    }That you guys and gals will have a complete overview of whats really going on, here is the Entity as well.
    package ejb;
    import java.io.Serializable;
    import javax.persistence.*;
    @Entity
    @Table(name="COMPANY")
    public class Company implements Serializable {
        private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L;
        @Id
        @GeneratedValue(strategy = GenerationType.AUTO)
        private Long id;
        @Column(name="COMPANY_NAME")
        private String name;
        public Long getId() {
            return id;
        public void setId(Long id) {
            this.id = id;
       public String getName() {
            return name;
        public void setName(String name) {
            this.name = name;
            System.err.println("SUCCESS:  CompanyName SET");
        @Override
        public int hashCode() {
            int hash = 0;
            hash += (id != null ? id.hashCode() : 0);
            return hash;
        @Override
        public boolean equals(Object object) {
            // TODO: Warning - this method won't work in the case the id fields are not set
            if (!(object instanceof Company)) {
                return false;
            Company other = (Company) object;
            if ((this.id == null && other.id != null) || (this.id != null && !this.id.equals(other.id))) {
                return false;
            return true;
        @Override
        public String toString() {
            return "ejb.Company[id=" + id + "]";
    }And the persistence.xml file
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <persistence version="1.0" xmlns="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/persistence" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/persistence http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/persistence/persistence_1_0.xsd">

    Well I don't understand this. If Netbeans created a Stateless Session Bean as a facade then it works -and it is implemented as a CMP, not as a BMP as you suggested.
    I defenitely will try you suggestion, just for curiosity and to learn the technology, however I dont have see why BMP will work and CMP won't.
    I also don't see why a stateless bean can not be a CMP. As far as I read it should not matter. Also on the link you sent me, I can't see anything related to that.
    Maybe you can help me answering these questions.
    I hope the above lines don't sound harsh. I really appreciate your input.
    Best regards

  • Unable to upload delimited flat file (Datastore)

    Dear All,
    Drilling down the tutorial:  ODI11g: Creating an ODI Project and Interface: Exporting a Flat File to a Flat File
    facing quite a problem while reverse-engineering delimited flat file (Datastore ->Model). No matter which type of delimited flat file is uploaded (txt, csv,prn), the system stayes intact while pressing "Reverse Engineering" button.  Changing to Fixed Flat File option reveals that the system uploads correctly only the first row - Header of the columns (second option from the top)..and ...of cource, all the rest of the rows were placed in the first column.
    I was preparing delimited flat files using Excel 2007 and  2010, in both cases no success. I tryied to create Fixed Flat File with Excel....confused completely since I could not realise how doing that?!
    Properties are below. Please, help!
