Persistant exclamation folder

Ok I have searched about 10 forums now and tried everything on them and still can't find out what's wrong.
First of all I got my Ipod mini from a friend as a gift for helping her out(since she bought a newer one) so i'm not sure as to how many GB's I have or what model it is, but it worked fine till I plugged it into my computer. I am using windows xp with sp2 software 1.4.1
So after seeing a problem I've been to several places to find a solution, I have: done the "5 R's" with no effect, after I reinstalled Itunes and it still didn't work, I went as far as to format my whole computer, still nothing. Then I went into disk mode, but then ITunes stopped recognizing my Ipod. Then I tried having windows manually format it from "my computer" and it always freezes when I try to right click on it, or go to click on the file drop menu. finally i went into diagnosis mode, and still it seemed everything was working fine. I am charging and connectiong to computer via USB port since I don't have firewire. At this point I'm at wits end, and still no solution.
So please if you might know something I haven't tried please post, and if needed I will give any information I may have forgotten to the best of my knowledge.

Please find a Mac computer and try to do a Restore there. Trust me, it works at the time in my case, otherwise, likely a bad hard drive of the iPod mini.

  • Exclamation folder nothing works, PLEASE HELP!!!!!

I restored my 4th gen 20g ipod yesterday afternoon and now all i get is the exclamation folder. i have tried resetting, nothing. tried connecting to computer, nothing. CAN ANYONE OUT THERE HELP ME PLEASE?!?

    If you've tried these.....
    Folder and ! error.
Your Windows PC doesn't recognize iPod
.......and they don't resolve the issue, then your iPod needs service.

  • EXCLAMATION FOLDER ICON

I have an ipod and it just stopped working while I was scrolling through songs. Now all I get is the exclamation folder icon and the apple icon back and forth. I've tried the 5 R's and all I get is that the ipod won't "mount" whatever that means. Any suggestions? Help, I need my IPOD!!!

First and the simply way is to find a Mac, plug your iPod with it (put in disk mode before plug in). Open the iPod updater and click Restore. once it has being completed, connect it back with your PC and do the Restore back with PC version.
Second, in case you can't find a Mac computer, try to plug and unplug your iPod few times with your PC, and hope it get mount . Then do a Restore
If both fail, hold your iPod with your left Palm and hit its back with your right Palm few times, until you see the language menu.

  • Interesting Twist on exclamation folder error

My son has a 5th gen iPod he got for Xmas. It was synced to a PC out of the box, never saw a Mac.
For some reason, it acquired the Exclamation Folder error, and could not be reset or restored. iTunes 6.0.4 for WinXP and iPod Updater for Windows could not see it. The iPod could be put into disk mode, but that did not change the failure to acquire in iTunes or iPod Updater.
We got an Apple return authorization and everything. At the last minute, I plugged the failed iPod into my Mac, and BANG - It showed up in Mac iPod Updater, which correctly read the SN and identified it as a Windows iPod, and then restored it flawlessly.
Before returning a Windows iPod to Apple because it cannot be restored, try Mac iPod Updater. It worked for me, it could work for you. YMMV.
    Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4)

Yep. Semi-easy fix. Crack open the ipod(you can find instructions and pics on the net).
Disconnect and reconnect the battery from the circuit board. Done.
Has worked for me on mine and several of my friend's 20GB 4th gens.
This is kind of a last resort fix since you could scratch it up doing it.

  • Exclamation folder

A friend gave me their old ipod mini and it worked fine at first. After updating and restoring it the exclamation folder comes up when not plugged into my computer. My computer still recognizes it and i can add songs. I tried everything suggested in this article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61003
but it still doesn't work. I dont have the cd the ipod came with but i do i have itunes on my computer. Any suggestions?

The exclimation folder icon means that the firmware is corrupt. You HAVE to restore it. Which isn't alwasy easy. I'm guessing that you are connecting via USB, which in the past has shown to be an issue with some PC's.
The easiest, but will cost some $$, is to go get the firewire cable and connect that way. Hopefully you have a firewire port on your PC, if not you have to go out and buy a firewire card. Again more $$. Kinda frustrating with the amount of $$ you already spent on the iPod.
Another option. Uninstall iTunes and the updater software. Try to connect the iPod after the uninstall and reboot. Hopefully it will show up as a drive in WinExplorer. If so, disconnect the iPod, and install the updater software.
If you NEVER see the iPod in "My computer" or WinExplorer, you will need to run "diskmgmt.msc" and assign the iPod a drive letter.
Run the updater software, wait for it to prompt you to connect the iPod (you might have to wait awhile, be patient). Connect the iPod, and select the restore option. Hopefully it will restore the iPod, and prompt you to connect the device to the wall adapter (to finish the update process).
If the update/restore fails, disconnect the iPod, and exit the updater software. Reconnect the iPod. Go to My Computer, and see if it shows up as a drive, if so, right click drive that is the iPod, and select "Format", then "Quick Format", "Start". When the format is done, Run the updater software, then restore. Again, it will prompt you to disconnet the device and connect it to the wall power adapter if all goes OK.
There are other options to run through if all of this fails, but I'm getting tired of typing. Try the above and come back if none of all of them work.

  • Ipod Mini Exclamation Folder

I have a 4Gb iPod Mini and it has a folder with an exclamation sign next to it.  I have tried resetting it without joy.  It won't go into disk mode.  My PC won't recognise it at all so neither will I-tunes.
Can anybody help or shall I just throw it away?

It's certainly your choice to trash/replace your iPod, and I wish you a good deal if you purchase a replacement media player.
Remember that you can always consult an Apple Genius at the Apple Store to see if it's ultimately cheaper to repair the iPod as opposed to replacing it. If you're thinking of replacing the iPod with another iPod, I'd advise you to bring your malfunctioning iPod to the Apple Store, see what your repair options are, then determine to repair your current iPod or replace it since you'll already be in the store to purchase one. And if you're really lucky, the Apple Store might offer you a discount on a new iPod if you give them your old one.
But even if they don't at least they'll probably be kind enough to let you use their trash can for your iPod that has sadly moved on to the afterlife.
    Best of luck!

  • Setting up a persistant, protected folder between a Macbook and Mac Pro?

    hi!
i am wondering what the easiest way to access my mac pro's files remotely and save to it from my macbook when i am not on the same network?
i do most of my work on my mac pro, however when i am out of town i would like to save to my mac pro FROM my macbook, keeping everything all synched!
these files are usually Logic Pro songs, and are therefore a too big for dropbox or any similar cloud synch service that is free (not viable for me to buy any subscriptions at the moment) - my goal would be to have a 'songs' folder on my mac pro that is accessible from my macbook and which i can write to. it'd obviously have to be somewhat secure!
the mac pro is usually online so it could be done via the web.
i'm thinking of something like a virtual LAN or persistant FTP connection? - but have never done anything like this before - any recommendations on how?
    your help is greatly appreciated!
    thank you!

Linc Davis solution is probably better. If you want to set up an FTP solution...
    Try:
PureFTPd Manager. Free. Is the server. It runs on your home computer. I found PureFTP easier to use than the Apple solution in Tiger. The apple solution could have changed.
You would have to contend with these issues:
Enable your Mac firewall to pass ftp traffic.
Do you have a local router? Enable it's firewall. Tell it to pass ftp data to your home mac.
Verify that your isp lets you run an ftp server on your home mac.
One your laptop, run one of these ftp clients:

  • Won't turn off Exclamation/Folder!!

Ipod won't turn off and I'm getting the exclamation point/folder icon. Sometimes it will have the Apple icon and restart itself, then the folder pops back up.
Does anyone have any idea what I can do before I pitch my 2nd Ipod out?
You can forget about getting help from Apple, they told me it's old (1 1/2yr) and that they'll give me $30 for this one!
    Thanks

  • Exclamation folder and my ruined ipod please help

My ipod no longer responds anymore. It either displays the apple logo, the folder with the exclamation point or nothing at all. My computer will not recognize it when I plug it into the usb port. I've tried resetting it and it does not work. I can't update it or restore it because the updater won't recognize it. Does anyone know anything I can do to get it to work again?

I had the same experience with mine a few weeks back... So I might save you alot of headache by telling you straight up what you should do...
    1) Dig out your "original" CD that came with your ipod
    2) Install ipod software from scratch (Itunes will say its already installed btw, so dont worry about that)
    3) When the installer says to plug in the ipod try it (I know it sounds stupid, but when i did it, the computer saw the ipod)
    4) Restore the ipod with the original updater
    5) Download and update with the new updater.
I always say (now) "When all else fails, start from scratch"

  • Calling all you mini ipod whizzes!! - issues with the exclamation folder!

Please help! My mini ipod won't charge or turn on. It's 18 months old now. It is not on hold, I have tried to reset it, charge it and plug it into my computer, all to na avail. When i plug it into the mains to charge, the apple sign comes up briefly, but then the folder sign comes up. I plugged it into my brothers computer, which has his itunes software on, and it said 'do not disconnect' for a period of time, then got stuck on a tick with 'ok to disconnect' on the screen. Again no luck. I would be really grateful for any help you can give me! I am training to do race for life in a couple of weeks and miss my ipod!!

Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.

  • IPod nano being read by Windows as "Removable Disk"

I have a 4gb nano, current firmware 1.1.1. Now, I've updated it before to the music on iTunes (back when it was on 1.0), but then one day, the iPod suddenly showed the exclamation/folder icon. So I restored the iPod with firmware 1.1 (it recommended I update, so I did), but my computer couldn't recognize the iPod. It kept showing a little baloon (I'm using XP) saying that the device could not be written to (only when I unplugged it, however). So, I thought that maybe it was just trying to write to it very slowly, but after leaving it there for a day, supposedly "writing" to the iPod, there were no results. I updated to 1.1.1, thinking that maybe 1.1 had a bug that caused this, but then I was confronted with the problem of nothing recognizing it at all. Windows now shows the iPod as a "Removable Disk", and when I double click it, it shows the loading mouse for about a minute; until it says
    "E:\ is not accessible.
The Files or directory is corrupted and unreadable."
NOTE: I have NEVER used any third party software like linux or "hacked" my iPod.
So, after looking around, I followed the method here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
Because I could see the device in My Computer but couldn't open it, and iTunes didn't recognize it.
However, it was not a success, so I tried the method here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301343
But that also didn't work. I am now at a loss for explanation, can anyone help me? This is my mother's iPod, and she's leaving on a business trip in two days; I'd like to get her music back on it so she can use the iPod on the plane. Any ideas?

It wasn't being recognized by anything... including the updater. But after searching through other threads, I found that other people have had this problem as well; it seems the firmware is the prime target for the scre-up. Thanks, Benoa, for the steps! Although you've probably heard it enough times already.

  • IPod troubles

    Hello,
I'm having problems with my Ipod...it's not being recognized by my PC and is making some clicking noising from the HD I suppose.
I tried to restore/reformat it but it's not recognized by iTunes or the iPod Updater...I also tried to put it into disk mode but thats not working either...all I get is the exclamation folder
    any tips?
    thanks for the help

    Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“Partition Magic”.
    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iPod updater.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2364921&#2364921
    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning ! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

  • Impossible problem with iPod Photo

    Ok, so here's the kick:
I joined this forum because I cannot find a solution to this problem whatsoever. I have an iPod Photo that has been sitting in a drawer for about 2 years. I just got a new car stereo and I wanted to fix my old iPod instead of buying a new one. Besides, all I want is the music playback. The original problem with the iPod was the hard drive. It made the usual "clicking" noise everyone has heard at least once, so my first goal was to change the hard drive. I ordered a 30GB Toshiba Drive that fits exactly for my iPod. Actually, it upgraded it's old 20GB one without occupying any additional space. While I was at it, I also ordered a new battery, since I was pretty sure 2 years ago the battery already had problems, and it couldn't have gone better with the years.
So, first package arrives: Hard Drive.
I replaced the hard drive and connected the iPod to my computer. Yay! No more noises! But, for some reason, the iPod cannot connect to my computer. Here's what happens:
    I connect the iPod
    iPod turns on
    Apple Logo appears
Exclamation Folder or Sad iPod icon appears (normal, since I just changed the hard drive and there are no iPod Software files)
After a few mins, the "Do not disconnect" message appears, and my computer starts to connect with the iPod
Not even 30 seconds later, the iPod completly restarts. The screens flashes off like it ran out of battery.
So, I though, maybe it was the battery. So, 2nd package arrives: Battery.
I changed the battery and I'm still having the same problem. Here are some steps I've taken:
    1. Put iPod in Disk Mode and connect: Computer doesn't recognizes it, iPod restarts after 45 secs approx
    2. Charge iPod: iPod wont charge in any outlet. It will just try to start and, since it will fail due to the lack of software, it will just turn off. I tried putting the iPod in Disk Mode and then charging it, and it did work. I left it charging for about 30 mins and retried connecting it, and I had the same problem/results
    3. Put old Hard Drive back: just for the heck of it
I sincerely have NO IDEA of what to do, and I haven't been able to find any help on Google nor any other forum.
Does someone, ANYONE, has a suggestion?
    Thanks in advance!

I, too, have this exact same problem after trying to use my daughter's IPod Photo 30GB that she abandoned about 2yrs ago. I've replaced the battery but this does not make any difference. I managed to get it into Disk Mode but when I try to restore it on the pc, it cannot see it. I also tried someone's suggestion of using a Mac but it made no difference.
Someone also suggested rebooting the hard drive using the reset button inside. However, have opened the IPod up and can't see a reset button anywhere on the hard drive. Have seen photos of hard drives in other IPods and it is really easy to find!
All I want to do is restore the IPod, there must be someone out there who can help. PLEASE?!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • IPod continuously restores and updates to no effect

    I have my girlfriend's grey-display 4GB iPod mini.
Here's the problem. When starting up the iPod goes to the exclamation folder icon (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61003). It then shuts off. Following the instructions I plug it in and make sure it's charged. Windows recognizes a USB device just as iTunes recognizes the iPod. Per instruction I restore it using the latest iTunes (7.0.2.16). It gives me the instruction to not touch the iPod while it restarts. I don't. upon rebooting, windows once again recognizes a USB device, and iTunes informs me (once again) that the iPod is in recovery mode and must be restored. I repeat the process once more. Same results. Then, I begin following the steps concurrently with the Restore option; reinstalling iTunes, changing the iPod's letter/path (from G: to Q:), resetting the iPod with the Hold button and putting it in disk mode. I've followed the five R's in exhaustive measure, every concurrent link from their onward has garnered nothing. I've dug thru these forums 12 pages back to no avail; picking and screening possible headers for a problem similar to my own.
I only require two things from you fine people now. First, I'd like a suggestion for my next possible step I could try that is uncatalogued by the Support pages here at apple.com
Secondly, barring this next step, is there any way I could get an estimate on repair or replacement if I were to send it back to apple?
PS: Windows has recently been opening the iPod like a storage device.
    Thanks for all the support.

I do not suggest that you send your iPod to apple for service, as the repairing cost is very high e.g. 60-70% cost of a new iPod Nano with same capacity
Bear in mind the battery of your iPod may also reach the time for replacement
    I suggest 2 things:-
First find another PC (even better a Mac with firewire), do a Restore for your iPod there
If does not works then to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
