Persistent blue screen startup

I finally took the jump and upgraded to Leopard. I CarbonCopied my system to an external FW drive and reformatted my internal HardDrive.
Initially the switch went smoothly. The first 2 times, I had my external FW with Tiger attached and started up with the option key down and selected the internal Leopard system. Then I removed the ext FW drive and when the iMac booted up it took forever with the spinning timer before going to a blue screen that also took 5-10 minutes before finally getting onto the log-in screen.
Once booted up I found I couldn't get it to recognise the FW drive on any of the ports. I took the FW drive to another iMac and it booted fine with the same cable. My USB drives are mounting OK.
I also couldn't connect to my VDSL modem via ethernet, but finally, with some trouble, connecting via my Airport Extreme. I still can not connect to the ethernet.
It seems to me on boot up it is possibly looking for something (possibly on the other drive) a long time and something has gone AWOL in the communications that is effecting the FireWire and ethernet but not the USB 2.0.
I tried force quitting during the slow boot up to try and read what the problem could be in the report, but I can't make head or tail of it.
Could someone please guide me as to steps I can take to isolate the problem. Possibly from some legacy software that transferred with CarbonCopy.

I would definitely NOT do an erase and install. I think that should be for disasters (I have never done one). I would back up as much as possible first (always a good idea before software changes).
Yes I have plenty of room, after all it was a fresh install.
I have received Mac Tool Pro 4.6.1 the latest and run that with a detailed hardware & file test. Again the FireWire and Ethernet are greyed out in the tests but all other hardware checks OK. I noticed that boot up time was what should be expected from a DVD start up ie shorter than the nearly 6 mins I have been experiencing.
I guess it maybe something to do with the FW failure. The system maybe trying unsuccessfully to connect to any potential external FW devices. Just a guess though.
Are there direct FW and Ethernet probes that I can use to get some sort of real test, not just the absence of one?
My 1.5 terabyte drive with both USB & FW should be arriving next week so I'll do another backup and A&I to see what happens. After that I guess I am off to service! Not looking forward to that.

I was hoping you could help me out here. I have been experiencing persistent blue screen of death problems on my Toshiba laptop since December 21 of 2014. The first two times I started having theses persistent issues, I downloaded a bunch of redundant programs and games onto my computer, some of which were virus infected. I had these programs on my computer for a while before my laptop was taken in for repairs. I eventually uninstalled some unnecesssary programs from my pc, hoping it would have fixed these issues, even tried windows update. I didn't have a clue that my problems were due to virus infections/malware until the two most recent times my computer was taken in for repairs; I had always been thinking it was a defective driver. My laptop has already been in for repairs at least twice due to these perpetual BSOD problems; I had Norton Internet Security installed on my pc before the Geek Squad team (who repaired my computer and found 312 traces of malware in my system during the virus test; I was told by them that I had mistakenly downloaded infected web browsers onto my pc) switched me to Webroot SecureAnywhere (they said it was better at detecting viruses/malware than my NIS), but even after my pc has been through repairs twice in a row, I am still experiencing blue screens (this only seems to have happened once each week, and on one occasion, I went through almost two weeks without it occurring). I am pretty sure, that I haven't downloaded anything onto my computer infected with viruses/malware (each of the scans done by my Webroot antivirus have found nothing), I have only a few games/apps installed on my pc, and what I downloaded all came from Microsoft's official website. I can't afford to be wasting any more money on repairs, and I am desperately searching for any possible way to fix this myself. Any help would be appreciated. I have a copy of two of the memory dumps from my most recent crashes (I also have the dump reports from my most recent crashes dating back to March 6; I got these from an app from NirSort called Blue Screen View, if you need those) I also have my system specs:

Note that many of these earler dump reports (the ones from March) came from viruses. The ones from most recently as last month, I am not sure about.

Thrashing about this way gets us nowhere.
Best to restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents.
Settings > Change PC settings > Update and recovery tab > Recovery tab > Remove everything and reinstall Windows
Use the freshly restored machine for a day or so before any installations of hardware, software, or updates of any kind. If you get no crashes, the problem is not likely due to hardware.
Then add updates and other things slowly, keeping track of them. If you get crashes after that, give us the corresponding dmp files.

Can't start in single user mode, trying to fix blue screen startup

Trying to fix my blue screen startup and I'm on the step to fix the Network Preferences and I'm suppoed to go into single user mode. It starts but then locks up. last line is: localhost:\ root# Anyone have an idea?

If you have access to another firewire equipt Mac then you could also use Target disk mode (connect the two together with a firewire cable, then start up your own computer while holding down the t key. ) Your own HD would then appear on the desktop of the other computer as another HD, and you can then proceed to remove or shift the same .plist files (on your own HD) identified in point 4 or 5 of http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464

Another blue screen startup

As far as I know I didn't put anything new on my iBook, but it now will only startup to a blue screen. I've tried running Disk Utility from the Install CD, but it wont repair. This is what it says:
blah blah...
Checking Catalog file.
Incorrect size for file temp2029816
(It should be 0 instead of 52736)
Anyway, when you repair disk it goes through the whole process, says repair completed, but the verify disk permissions and repair disk permissions stay greyed out. Is there anything I can do to get my workhorse working again?
Anyone got any ideas?

further investigation tells me this
I connected the blue screening mac to another via firewire as a target disk. the hd would not mount, but i could run the same verify and repair in disk utility, but the disk permissions buttons were still greyed out. And i couldn't mount it from there. I then tried the migration assistant, but again it couldn't see the disk.
what am i doing wrong, or what do i need to do differently?

Blue screen startup blues....

today i got the update software window so i installed the new updates of itunes, quicktime, and i think os10.4.11...
after it installed and asked me to restart the computer a message came up that said my startup disk space was low, i checked and there was about 600mb available.
i hit restart and now it just goes to a blue screen with the cursor. but just before it goes to that screen, for about 5 seconds a vlack darwin login screen comes up, again, it immediately goes blue after about 5 seconds.
any help from all you smart people out there?? where would the world be without you....?

You posted in 2009 area. Is that what you have?
Those have FW800 only, no FW400, so it seems not.
Scant on details and hardware, but clean install should be tried, and SL brings a lot of new problems so you might even want to test your system with 10.5 or the system it shipped with (10.4.x).
There have been terrible FireWire issues on some machines. Some require a new logicboard, some people buy PCIe FW cards. and isolate audio devices from FW drives (and try not to daisy chain).
LaCie has so many issues with FW ports - the cure is to shutdown and unplug every cable and device. SMC Reset - now done using statup button while unplugged from power source.
I would not put any faith or weight in TechTool Deluxe. if you like. upgrade to TechTool Pro 5.
Zap pram and permissions are not as you found fixing other than it seems temporary and symptom goes away.
bad FW cables can even cause panics; shortouts.
I bought FW800 PCIe almost as soon as I got my Mac Pro 4 yrs August.

Blue Screen:Startup & Shutdown

I'm getting a very quick blue screen during Startup and Shutdown.
I've only had the Macbook for a few weeks, and don't recall this happening until recently.
Is this normal?

Hi , I'm having the same issue too. When I switched on my macbook pro , a white screen with apple logo in centre appeared & including a loading icon turning.Then, it follow by a bright blue screen & change into lighter blue screen.This blue screen process took about a few seconds before it brings me into my window screen . (This happen for shutdown too) I tried to google for this issue but couldn't find a better answer.Hope it's not some software issue. I just bought it 2 weeks ago. Hope to hear some advise from this forum. Thanks.

Blue Screen Startup

Hello all -
I have a quad core Mac Pro running OSX 10.6.3 On startup the computer displays the apple logo w/ grey screen, then a blue screen, but doesn't progress any further.
I have tried holding the shift key to start in safe mode, but that has no effect.
I have booted from the OSX DVD and tried 'repair permissions' but nothing changes.

IMac LCD screen replaced, Blue Screen startup

Hi there, I just had the LCD screen replaced on my late 2007 Aluminum iMac today (due to a permanent red vertical streak) by an Applecare certified technician. He did a meticulous job with the replacement, and the iMac booted up just fine afterwards. About an hour later, though, I tried starting up the iMac and after the grey screen with the Apple logo it gets stuck on a blue screen with a constantly spinning pinwheel.
Now I tried everything, booting up in Safe Mode, Single User Mode, resetting the PRAM, FSCK, Disk Utility using Disk Repair, unplugging the power cord for 30 seconds, etc. and nothing seems to work. It just gets stuck on a blue screen whenever it tries to boot up.
Just wanted to see if there is anything else I could try out before I give Apple a call tomorrow, if this boot up problem is a result of the new LCD screen replacement or what? Any help or insight in the matter would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
Update: I should note that right now I'm in the (lengthy) process of restoring from a Time Machine save to see if that helps out in any way.

You could try the following first, but a repair may be required.
iMac G5: Fails to startup (From an article at MacFixit)
Some users are reporting an issue where iMac G5s fail to properly startup -- apparently at a hardware level -- never reaching the Mac OS X startup splash screen (Apple logo with a spinning progress indicator).
Note that in cases where the system does reach the Mac OS X startup splash screen or further progression but stalls, software issues may be to blame.
Potential fixes
Disconnect external devices External devices -- especially those that draw power from the system -- can cause issues with startup that manifest either at the beginning of or later in the boot process. Try temporarily any external FireWire or USB devices then re-attempt startup and check for persistence of the issue.
Reset SMU Although this workaround was not successful in Connors' case, resetting the iMac G5's SMU (system management unit) as described in Apple Knowledge Base article #301733 can resolve a variety of power-related problems, including sudden-onset startup failure.
Check power cables Check your power cord for a loose connection. As noted in the aforementioned reader case, unplugging and re-plugging the power cord can sometimes result in a successful startup -- likely the result of a more snug fit.
Also, power cables can become defective or ship in such a state.
Try exchanging the power cable from a problematic machine with a system that starts up properly to eliminate this as a potential cause.

5 MINUTES ON BLUE SCREEN STARTUP.. but it DOES finally appear

Brand new 27 inch iMac .... seemed fine first two days .. applied all the new updates suggested by Apple (repaired permissions before and after each time..) so .. 10.6.6
This morning, on wake-up from sleep, there were LOTS of 'dead' pixels on screen, and I mean LOTS .......
When I took a screen shot of them .. as I moved the curser on capture, the 'dead' pixels moved ........
Restarted ...... no pixel issues ..... then I thought I had the blue screen reported so often about these iMacs ... and I did, it's just that after 5minutes (no hard-drive activity that I could hear), the screen suddenly appears as normal
Any idea what is stopping this screen appearing after 30 seconds or so after start-up .. or how I might do something about it ?

Swoosh, blue screen, startup problems

Hi all,
Took delivery of two MBAs in September 2013. However, one of them has the following problems:
1. There is a "swoosh" sound every few minutes from its speakers, even when there are no apps being run.
2. Very often, after putting my computer to sleep, it refuses to start up, until I plug in the charger. EVEN if it had already been charged. More recently, it did not even start up even after I plugged in the charger, until I closed it and tried again after some time.
3. The computer showed a blue screen and was unresponsive for half a minute, midway while in use.
Are these issues easily fixed or do I have to send it in?

Far too much a hardware issue to mess with, you just got that one, return it for another.

IMac intel: 5 minutes of blue screen before startup! Help!

I have a Core Duo 17" iMac. I've erased the hard drive and installed a clean, new copy of 10.5. It takes the computer 5 minutes of blue screen before starting. There are no peripherals attached, no other software than the Apple system software installed. I erased the hard drive and installed 10.6, and had the same problem. Reset the SMC, zapped the PRAM. Replaced the memory chips. Replaced the hard drive. Nothing helps.
The console log shows lots of delay about "did not die after sending SIGKILL." The Console log also shows the 5 minute delay in startup. In the log below, look at the entry at 5:21 pm on 9/15. That's when the computer started, then the next entry is 5 minutes later at 5:26pm. That's my 5 minute blue screen startup.
Anyone know what's going on? Thanks.

Curious to know how you got to 10.5.8, If you went through Software Update, using the "Delta" updates, or if you used the 10.5.8 Combo? It might be worthwhile applying (or re-applying) the 10.5.8 Combo, which might serve to fill in anything missing or possibly corrupted.

The other thing I'd try is running Applejack which is a very useful little program for troubleshooting and repairing. It runs from Single User Mode. Hold CMD-S at the startup chime. Here's a short article explaining how it's used. (Also, be sure to read the Read Me.) It's very easy to use. You just follow the on screen prompts. First, just type in applejack and press return. To begin with, I'd only run it only for steps 3 and 4, which will do a relatively light cache cleaning (but, importantly in your case, clean out the boot cache) and check for corrupted Preference files. Doing it this way, you'll also be able to run those steps for your user, not just the system. If that doesn't help, you can run it for deeper cache cleaning by typing in applejack AUTO and let it run through a full sequence of tasks. Note: that if you do a deeper cache cleaning, you can expect the system to run a bit slower until those caches are rebuilt.

Since this problem seems to have happened with most people here, as a result of an Apple software update, Apple should be responsible to help us solve this problem. It is their responsibility. ... They broke it, They bought it.
