Persistent Channel 13 Dynamic Channel Assigment (DCA)

Dear WiFi Experts,
Why is AP still choosing channel 13 when Dynamic Channel Assigment is enabled and channels 1,6,11 are the only channels selected/checked in the DCA list?
Can't the AP choose only 1, 6, and 11 and nothing more?
WLC country code is set to SA (Saudi Arabia).
WLC code 7.0.98

HI ,
It chooes the best channel.
Just info:
Here is the list of channels (and frequencies) of the ISM (industrial, scientific and medical band) (2.4 GHz) used in the WiFi technology:
Channel 1: 2.412 MHz
Channel 2: 2.417 MHz
Channel 3: 2.422 Mhz
Channel 4: 2.427 Mhz
Channel 5: 2.432 Mhz
Channel 6: 2.437 Mhz
Channel 7: 2.442 Mhz
Channel 8: 2.447 Mhz
Channel 9: 2.452 Mhz
Channel 10: 2.457 MHz
Channel 11: 2.462 MHz
Channel 12: 2.467 MHz
Channel 13: 2.472 MHz
Channel 14: 2.484 MHz
If you want then you can manually change Channle per AP:
Here is the process:
1. Login WLC GUI
2. Go to Wireless > Access Points > 802.11a/802.11b then on far right side of AP from drop dpwn menu click on configure.
Under RF channel assignment you can change the channle manually.

  • Dynamic Vlan Assigment on 2950 with acs 4.2

    Hello to everyone
We have a problem with Cisco 2950G 48 EI and ACS (version 4.2) providing dynamic Vlan assignment based on groups
On the ACS we configured the following attributes for the specific group
    64 = VLAN
    65 = 802
    81 = VLAN Name
We tried for the 81 attribute both Vlan name and Vlan ID but we get the same results
In detail, we need the machine to be placed on Vlan ID 6 named vlan_sio so we inserted these value in the attribute field
Before we configured the switch to speak with ACS:
    aaa new-model
    aaa group server radius Switch
                                   server 172.16.0.93 auth-port 1812 acct-port 1813

                    radius-server host 172.16.0.93 auth-port 1812 acct-port 1813 key xxxxxx
    radius-server retransmit 3
Configured the ports for the use of dot1.x.
    switchport mode access
                   dot1x port-control auto
                   dot1x guest-vlan 7
                   spanning-tree portfast
The users are correctly authenticated but the ports are always connected to the default Vlan of the ports
We tried to debug with the debug dot1.x events command and we get the following errors:

  • Anyone deploying Auto-RF for channel-assignment only?

    Hi folks,
Curious to know if anyone is deploying LWAPP Auto-RF just for Dynamic Channel Allocation (DCA), not for Dynamic Transmit Power Control (DTPC).
We have a dense deployment of APs (ten floors of a hospital in a 4-leaf clover design with "pods" at each leaf having 2 APs each) and have enabled DCA only, with a static Tx Power constant of TPL3 (31mW). Note: the original IOS AP setup was at 20mW and we intend to lower the TX Power to TPL4. Its our understanding that AP neighbor beacons (sent at 100mW) are controlling DCA behavior regardless of this.
We are finding that DCA is going nuts in this environment (12-24 channel changes/day on several floors of APs all at once). It seems to never to stabilize. And it impacts both APs in a coverage area: each floor "pod" loses both APs (due to client de-authentications prior to the channel change) at the same time. See attached DCA reports for two floor pods APs (9 floors apart).
Is it acceptable to enable Dynamic Channel Allocation but not enable Dynamic Transmit Power Control in this way? Could this be contributing to the DCA activity?
    Thanks folks,

    Sabhasin,
I appreciate your response, however the issue, even with the current enhancements over execution of the DCA algorithm, is that it sends simultaneous channel-change requests to multiple APs at once, and dis-associates active clients from their APs, and any nearby APs that they might be able to connect to, with no regard to applications.
As before, it also lacks the means to set a Rogue AP RSSI DCA floor (rogues are the main trigger for DCA), and the DCA beacons sent from each AP to determine DCA changes is sent at 100mW and 1Mbps data rate, rather than the user-configured data-service rate, which the clients hear and use. As a result APs are changing channels for no good reason as far as the clients are concerned. As it stands now, good luck using more than one subnet (via AP Groups VLANs) per building w/o DCA kicking clients off and changing their IP address (and breaking apps). Unless they can treat these clients like a standard roam event, one subnet per building is the limit (and aren't we supposed to be following Cisco's wired subnet design policies of one VLAN per floor?).
There have been recent changes to the algorithm to modify the execution. The "5dB better SNR" metric now has a range of 3 values instead of one, DTPC will not power up if it has only 1 client on the fringe of coverage, and they've defaulted the neighbor RSSI to -71). This "numbs" DCA so it is not as reactive, but its equally or more important that it be sensitive to existing (including non-intelligent) associated clients and traffic.
What happpened to providing min/max TxPower limits for DTPC, and how about deferring DCA on APs with clients or any traffic (not just voice)?
Its all well and good to make things work for Intel and the CCX/CCKM compliant crew, but if you have any of the other brands of WLAN NICs (like those made by medical device manufacturers, who won't subscribe to fast roaming features until they're adopted by the IEEE) you are best keeping RRM disabled until it delivers on its promise as stated in the following 802.11TGv Objectives draft:
    Service and Function Objectives
Solutions shall define mechanisms to provide the service listed below.
[Req2000] TGv shall support Dynamic Channel Selection, to allow STAs to avoid interference. Solution shall be able to change the operating channel (and/or band) for the entire BSS during live system operation and be done seamlessly with no intermittent loss of connectivity from the perspective of an associated STA. Solution shall not define algorithm for channel selection.
P.S. And how about a detailed doc showing how to tune the product in a live environment? Is it too much to ask for a legitimate case study with requisite RF environment assumptions and real before and after data with a mixed client base?

  • Updating channels on 5508 controller

I have a 5508 with 4 APs connected to it.
I wanted to change the global wireless channel configuration for the b/g/n networks from channel 1 to channels 3,6,11
I disabled the network by going to
802.11b/g Network Status and unchecking the box
then I changed the channels in DCA to 3,6,11
the controller took the commands, but my LWAPs are not updating. They still show up as channel 1. I tried to reset them, shut and enable switch ports, etc., but for some reason they always go back to channel 1 (even though 3,6,11 show up under DCA).
    did I miss something?

Maybe the channel is hard set on the AP. Click the blue drop down button on the right of the AP name and info. Click on configure and you can set it there.
Again... You should leave this at 1, 6 and 11.

  • WLC DCA algorithm updates

We have two 4404's . Both using TPC and DCA. One of the WLC's does not respond to DCA updates at all.
When looking at the DCA parameters (802.11a > RRM > Dynamic Channel Assignment (DCA))  the 'last channel auto assignment' is always displaying N.A. This problem is not applicable to the Channel Assignment Leader only on the Group Member.
Both WLCs are in the same RF group.

  • Secured persistent connection - RTMPS

    Hi,
I'm pretty new to Actionscript and I'm trying to find ways to
have some means of communication between a server and a flash
client (written using Actionscript 2.0). The flash client needs to
be able to handle unsolicited requests from the server. I can do
this with XMLSocket, but I can't find ways to secure the channel
without installing additional components (stunnel) on the client
machine. I can also do this with Actionscript 3.0 using RTMPS
(using red5) as the server. However, Actionscript 2.0 does not
appear to have full support for RTMP. The NetConnection class in
Actionscript 2.0 is a lot skinnier than in Actionscript 2.0.
Any thoughts on this? Is there anyway I can have a
bidirectional secured persistent channel between a flash client
    (Actionscript 2.0) and a server?
    Thanks for your help.

    David,
    Thank you for your reply.
We have a stored procedure that output a ref_cursor generated from a global temp table.
When I try to populate the ref_cursor, I got ora-8103 error.
I can use OO4O to run the same procedure and get data back.
This error let me wonder it ODP.NET provide persistent connection (or single session connection) to oracle.
Also, If I use MS provider for oracle, either for COM+ or .NET, they always get the error.
Do you have any solution for this issue?
    Thank you very much.

  • 802.1x RADIUS with EAP-TLS/EAP-TTLS & Dynamic VLAN Assignment

Hello, My team is looking for switches supporting 802.1x authentication on either EAP-TTLS or EAP-TLS protocols with dynamic vlan assignment enabled for these. Looking at the data sheets of the Linksys desktop switches, I found only SLM224G4PS and SLM224G4S models to support EAP-TLS or EAP-TTLS. Am I right? Do they support Dynamic VLAN Assigment for either of those protocols? This is not explicitly mentioned in the data sheets, and I happen to find switches from other manufacturers that announce to support EAP-TLS/EAP-TTLS but no dynamic vlan assignment. Thank you for any help.

SLM switches do support 802.1x RADIUS with EAP-TLS/EAP-TTLS unlike the SRW switches which support MD5. But I don't think that they support Dynamic VLAN.

  • Diferrence Between RRM and Clean Air

    Hello Everyone.
I want to say thank you for read my post.
Well I'm having some problems here, because I don't get the correct Idea for RRM & Clear Air. For me they do the same.
Can anyone explain me the differente?
    Thank you.

    Hi Ordonez,
    CleanAir:
With Cisco CleanAir technology, if an interference source
is strong enough to completely jam a Wi-Fi channel, the
system will change channels within seconds to avoid the
interference, resuming client activity on another channel
outside of the affected area. The system remembers
intermittent interference from persistent sources such
as a microwave ovens, wireless bridges, or wireless
video cameras. Through tight integration with Cisco radio
resource management technology, the CleanAir solution
indicates the channels where these devices operate so
that system administrators can optimize performance and
    minimize future disruption.
Others claim to have integrated spectrum intelligence
but can’t effectively distinguish between Wi-Fi and non-
Wi-Fi interference. Spectrum intelligence products from
other manufacturers typically falsely interpret any network
noise as interference and randomly switch channels,
which jeopardizes network stability and may reduce
    overall network performance.

    RRM:
The RF Group Name is an ASCII string configured per wireless LAN controller (WLC). The grouping algorithm elects the RF Group leader that, in turn, calculates the Transmit Power Control (TPC) and Dynamic Channel Assignment (DCA) for the entire RF Group. The exception is Coverage Hole algorithm (CHA), which is run per WLC. Because RF Grouping is dynamic, and the algorithm runs at 600-second intervals by default, there might be an instance where new neighbors are heard (or existing neighbors are no longer heard). This causes a change in the RF Group that could result in the election of a new Leader (for one or multiple logical RF Groups). At this instance, the Tx Power Threshold of the new group leader is used in the TPC algorithm. If the value of this threshold is inconsistent across multiple controllers that share the same RF Group Name, this can result in discrepancies in resultant Tx power levels when the TPC is run

RRM and CleanAir perform approximatley the same.
Only difference being in CleanAir they have implemented spectrum level intelligence which can differentiate between different wireless interfering devices for ex: microwave oven , cordless phone. With this if youre using NCS you can easily plot and mitigate the source of interfernce with exact device type.

  • Questions on the Wireless Installation.

    Experts,
We have a good number of wireless access point installed on our network and I want to make sure that these AP's are not conflicting with each other.
Why do all the wireless access points show me the channel as 1(for 2.4 GHz)? and channel 36(for 5GHz)?
If I run a WiFi analyses what does the singnal strength in dBm really indicate? Is -70 good?
    regards,
    Nik

You can configure your WLC for Radio Resource Manager (RRM) and Dynamic Channel Assignment (DCA).
The radio resource management (RRM) software embedded in the controller acts as a built-in RF engineer to consistently provide real-time RF management of your wireless network.
RRM automatically detects and configures new controllers and lightweight access points as they are added to the network. It then automatically adjusts associated and nearby lightweight access points to optimize coverage and capacity.
The controller's dynamic channel assignment (DCA) capabilities are also useful in minimizing adjacent channel interference between access points. For example, two overlapping channels in the 802.11b/g band, such as 1 and 2, cannot both simultaneously use 11/54 Mbps. By effectively reassigning channels, the controller keeps adjacent channels separated.
Check more details on RRM and DCA in document.
    -Thanks

  • Best practices in wireless configuration?

    Hi,
Is there a best practice document that shows 3500 AP with 5508 controllers? The questions I have are below.
    1. Do I configure each AP to non overlapping neighbor channels(1,6,11 for 2.4GHz) or leave that to controller to decide? Does controller change the channel of an AP when it sees congestion on a specific frequency?
    2. For 5 GHz is it good idea to bond the channels? What frequency to use for neighboring APs? OR again, leave it to controller to shift as needed?
    3. For security what's best practices? 802.1x or different?
    Thanks,
    Sm

    1. Do I configure each AP to non overlapping neighbor channels(1,6,11 for 2.4GHz) or leave that to controller to decide?
Let the controller(s) decide.  By default the Dynamic Channel Assignment (DCA) verifies the channel for interferrence every 600 seconds.  Because you have 3500 then make sure you enable Event Driven RRM (Radio Resource Management) on both channels.
Does controller change the channel of an AP when it sees congestion on a specific frequency?
The controllers will not change the channel when it sees congestion.  The controller will change the channel if it sees interference on the same channel.  The CleanAir will change the channel when it sees interference from non-AP interference like Bluetooth, Microwave ovens, cordless phones, etc.
    2. For 5 GHz is it good idea to bond the channels?
    Sure.
What frequency to use for neighboring APs? OR again, leave it to controller to shift as needed?
    Leave this option in default.
    3. For security what's best practices? 802.1x or different?Sure.

  • WLC RF Group Leader election - can config. influence this?

    Hi,
    Can config. influence this?
    Regards, MH

    Hi Mark,
    Hope all is well with you :) The answer to this question is not really. Have a look at why this is;
    RF Group Leader
The members of an RF group elect an RF group leader to maintain a "master" power and channel scheme for the group. The RF group leader is dynamically chosen and cannot be selected by the user. In addition, the RF group leader can change at any time, depending on the RRM algorithm calculations.
The RF group leader analyzes real-time radio data collected by the system and calculates the master power and channel plan. The RRM algorithms try to optimize around a signal strength of -65 dBm between all access points and to avoid 802.11 co-channel interference and contention as well as non-802.11 interference. The RRM algorithms employ dampening calculations to minimize system-wide dynamic changes. The end result is dynamically calculated optimal power and channel planning that is responsive to an always changing RF environment.
The RRM algorithms run at a specified updated interval, which is 600 seconds by default. Between update intervals, the RF group leader sends keep-alive messages to each of the RF group members and collects real-time RF data.
If the value of this threshold is inconsistent across multiple controllers that share the same RF Group Name, this can result in discrepancies in resultant Tx power levels when the TPC is run.

  • Content admin - iview not in top level navigation bar

    Using my Administrator ID.
Also Portal Admin -> channel assigment not in top level navigation bar.
    What role am I missing?

    Hi,
The short answer to your question is that you need to add the relevant iView(s) and change the applicable role or iView properties to display in the areas necessary.
Generally you require the super admin role to structure other admin roles to the different types of admin roles in your enterprise with a default installation.
You could for example determine that your content admin receive more than just the default iView(s) applicable to them, and that you want those iView(s) to display as tabs, or only in the detailed navigational areas. This is a matter of personal preference and thus SAP allows you to customize this as you see fit.
    I hope this helps.
