Persistent Hum Is

I am using a X-FI card, but I believe the hum issue I am trying to address is card independent. I want to run iTunes through my computer sound card to my stereo. That worked for a while, but I made some hardware changes and now I get a loud hum when I attach to my home stereo system. Using the same cabling, I can connect the iPod directly to my stereo system its clear as a bell. However, using my PC sound card (or the onboard sound on the motherboard) the hum is present. I suspect there is some sort of electrical field or grounding issue. I am hoping people on this list have some insight as to what that might be and how to address it. Thanks!?Hagen FinleyBoulder, CO

I'm guessing that your screen reduces brightness with some sort of resistor which is applied to it as you turn it down. This resistance then creates more electric build-up (all electro-magnetic stuff I believe, but I'm no expert) and a sonic byproduct in the form of a hum. It may be being pickup by passing audio cables.
I had a hum from a power source that I manage to reduce heavily when I re-organised my cabling. I have audio cables (speaker wires, RCA/phono/jacks etc.) all running in separate parallel courses crossing as infrequently as I could manage. By keeping them separated by a couple of feet, the hum markedly came down. Check your cables aren't running too close, or that the monitor is not too close to the speakers.
If that is not possible, you may want to invest in some better shielded cabling.
May help....

  • Hard Drive Hum on brand new IMac i5

    All,
Just settling in with my new IMac, and a very noticeable, persistent hum comes from the machine. It is not read/write noises, but very clearly it is the 2tb Hitachi Drive (Hitachi HDS722020ALA330) making the majority of the noise (I can hear the fans, but those are acceptable). The noise is a steady, persistent hum. I can hear read/write noises when accessing files, but these are very quiet.
The reason I know its the hard drive, is that during shutdown, while the screen is still lit, the noise will die and then a second later the machine goes off.
The noise itself kind of sounds like a transformer hum, and is noticeable even when playing music on the machine (at a fairly low level). In a silent room, this noise is noticeable from across the room. The noise does not fluctuate with changes in screen brightness, or even putting the screen to sleep.
Anyhow, I am considering calling AppleCare, but wanted to see if there is a way to quiet this drive down. Some IStat info:
    HD: 55°
    CPU 50°
    GPU Diode 64°
    GPU Heat sink 60°
    Mem Controller 56°
    Optical Drive 48°
    Power Supply 2 61°
    Ambient is 27°
    the fan speeds are:
    Optical Drive 999 rpm
    Hard Drive: 1099 rpm
    CPU Fan: 1199 rpm
There are a ton of threads around humming, clicking, fan noises...etc... after reading them (some anyhow), I think I have accurately noted the sound I am hearing. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Greg

I confirm that my iMac 21.5'' Core i5 2011 has a constant HDD humming as well. It's not too loud, but very recognizable in a silent room even from some meters away. the HDD access noise does not bother me as it's quiet enough. Actually all Apple coomputers I have had a crappy loud hard drives, which is weird for the computers of such price. While the silent drives do exist on the market, Apple prefers to install a cheap hard drives to save some bucks. I am really disappointed that 2011 models have a proprietary hard drives, which limit the upgrade. I tried to listen to this Mac at the shop where I purchased it and heard nothing, but the room was not perfectly silent. When I ran it at home I've got the noise immediately. I have Hitachi 2 Tb drive (it's pretty old model to install in 2011 computers, what a shame Apple). While the drive speed is good, the humming just kills the entire iMac idea , because you have it right at your face. I don't wish to go back to the shop cause it's actually in another country and it will be not easy to move it back and forth.. And I doubt they will be able to help me.
I am just curious is this humming in every iMacs with 2 Tb Hitachi, or mine is not OK?
BTW there are LOTS of complaints on noisy iMAc HDDs for years, and it's weird Apple does nothing to fix it.
I would probably prefer to have a 1 Tb HDD without a humming, than pay so much extra for BTO iMac just to get this problem. I think I will try to replace my HDD at some moment, but with 2011 iMac limitations that could be some problem if you are not in the USA.

  • Hum Through DV Cam When CRT Connected

Would anybody have any idea why attaching an external CRT to my PowerBook via the DVI-VGA adapter would cause a rather loud hum from the analog output of a DV cam when it's attached to the PowerBook via firewire?
Even if the external monitor is turned off, the hum still persists. However, it goes away if I unplug the monitor from the power outlet, or unplug it from the DVI-VGA adapter.
I have plugged the monitor into different electrical outlets with no improvement.
Maybe a bad ground in the monitor?
    Thanks much,
    Brad

The camera doesn't let you change the input volume
    What I did was:
Made the VIDEO ONLY go from VCR > DV CAM > MAC
But made the audio go to VCR > PC LINE IN > PC LINE OUT > DV CAM > MAC
When the audio came through my PC - I lowered the LINE IN volume so on the FCP audio level meters the audio peaked at -6dbs.
    Not a bad idea hey
Lucky I had all the cables and connectors laying around.

  • How to deal with hum/interference - 30in Cinema display?

Hi, I hope someone can help with this!
I have a 30inch Cinema display, which has started to create a hum through my powered speakers (Genelec 8040's). I have tried plugging the (mains powered) speakers into a separate mains socket, moving them about, as far as is practical, and even sticking a sheet of tinfoil between the back of them , but no luck.
The hum comes on at very low volume levels, and is persistent, i.e. if I am playing a track in iTunes, and there is a quite bit in the song, I get 'errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr' in the background.
Now the weird thing is that I was playing a game, and for some reason there was no hum, which suggests it may be fixable via software/settings?
I'm a bit of a newbie at this stuff (as the tinfoil experement, may suggest!), so I'd really appreciate any advice!
    TIA,
    Steve

Thanks for the feedback. I thought it was the monitor, as the hum is only present when it is on. It may be a combination of the Mac Pro & the monitor though... Mmmmm...
I think I may have fixed it, well improved the situation, I'll say what I did in case anybody else has the same issue, or has a better fix.
I tried unplugging the mini jack audio out, which goes from the mac, to a mixing desk, to the powered Genelec audio monitors. When I did this the hum stopped, which I think means that the issue is a poorly shielded mini jack to phono cable, as if it was direct interference from the monitor to the speakers, it should (in theory) be present regardless of whether the audio is connected into the mac or not.
I have moved the cable about, and the hum is reduced, so I think I have found the problem.
Hopefully this will be of use if anybody else has the same issue!

    Dear All,
I have resolved the above problem by following the below procedure.
    step-1
HUM log recovery has been done, but problem still persisted.
    net stop crmdmgtd
deleted upm (hum) log file from the location NMSROOT\databases\cmf\upm.log
NMSROOT\objects\db\win32\dbsrv10.exe -f NMSROOT\databases\cmf\upm.db --> the database was set to forced closed (i.e. indicating that there are no more pending transactions)
    step-2
    net stop crmdmgtd
    NMSROOT\bin\perl.exe NMSROOT\bin\dbRestoreOrig.pl dsn=upm dmprefix=UPM --> reinitialized the HUM database
    net start crmdmgtd
Now I am successfully able to create the interface utilization poller in HUM.
Please rate this thread if it is useful of anyone..

Actually, here's a clearer image. The middle stroke is with 20% drawing smoothness, and 100% pressure strength.
The top stroke is 100% both, and the bottom is 100% drawing smoothness with 20% pressure strength.
In all three instances, the dark watercolorish ring persists.

  • Mac Pro loud humming

Having owned/used an iMac White, iMac Silver, Macbook & MacBookPro. I have never heard a computer as loud as my MacPro.
I am running the default stock standard 320GB Apple/Samsung drive. And 2 other drives - which I suspected could cause the noise, so I removed them and rebooted. But the loud humming is still there.
Its uncomfortable, and in a small room I can't hear myself think. My mum listened and said it sounds similar to a fridge.
I have searched the web and the bottom links recommend shoving towel in the MacPro, or bending the drive bays. I just really don't feel comfortable doing that.
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=463342
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=413163&highlight=resonance

Unfortuneatly, noise is subjective so you'll never get a definitive answer as to whether the Mac Pro is noisy. People coming from noisy pcs will tell you the Mac Pro is whisper quiet. People using them in work environments won't notice any noise because of the general ambient noise. (It's amazing how much humming noise flourescent bulbs alone can make.) My Mac Pro is used in a quiet room so the noise is quite noticeable to me. Your description of "fridge" is spot on. Mine sounds like a mini fridge when the condensor kicks in. My only guess is that it's coil resonance from the power supply, because i've pretty much ruled out any visible "moving part". I've booted up with no hard drive connected, briefly stopped each fan individually (including the video card fan) and the humming persisted. Having given up at this point, i simply play music on iTunes in the background while the system is on. I'm fairly certain if i took it in for service, i would be told it is operating normally and be charged for having them look at it so thus far have not taken that route.

    Hi Danny,
Per my understanding that you can't get the expect result by using the expression "=Count(Fields!TICKET_STATUS.Value=4) " to count the the TICKET_STATUS which value is 4, the result will returns the count of all the TICKET_STATUS values(206)
    but not 180, right?
I have tested on my local environment and can reproduce the issue, the issue caused by you are using the count() function in the incorrect way, please modify the expression as below and have a test:
    =COUNT(IIF(Fields!TICKET_STATUS.Value=4 ,1,Nothing))
    or
    =SUM(IIF(Fields!TICKET_STATUS=4,1,0))
If you still have any problem, please feel free to ask.

Have you changed something on your SharePoint 2007 environment recently before this issue occurred?
This issue may be related to Alternate Access Mappings settings like the following similar post, if you have configured AAM, you can check if this issue happened to some URLs, if it's the case, please add the problematic URLs as a Publish URLs for the default

  • How to populate/persist right-side of Shuttle in apex 3.1.2 after submit

In the new Shuttle I can only specify one LOV (select empname, empid from emp where empid not in (1,3,4)) but I also want to populate the right-side of the shuttle to show values which the non-members (select empname, empid from emp where empid in (2,5)) so that the user can make selections which persist after submit.

    Rashid,
The method that worked for me was to:
    1) Create the LOV to populate the Left side of the shuttle (unselected).
    2) Define the Source property to populate the Right side (selected). In my case, I used a PL/SQL Function Body type, but any would work.
I set the Source Used to Always, so that my user always started with the same default selection, but if you set it to "Only set when session value is null", that should do what you're asking for.
Good luck (and thanks for the points by marking my answer helpful or correct),

  • Hitachi drives hum in MacPro?

I just got a refurbed MacPro with the stock 250GB hard drive and so I ordered 2x500GB Hitachi Deskstar 7K500 drives from zipzoomfly.com (1.25TB total) The drives arrived today and so I went and installed them (very easy in the MacPro)
Upon boot up, I noticed a really nasty "clicking" noise and thought "oh no", the machine never fully booted, I even got the circle w/ a line through it. So I shut it down and removed one of the drive trays and figured out which one of the drives was clicking.
So, with the other drive still in place, I booted again and this time it came up and wanted me to initialize it so all is well... but the thing is that it seems to "hum" quite a bit. Overall, it's much louder than with just the 250GB boot drive installed, I was wondering is this "hum" normal on a MacPro? I can kind of understand it because the case is aluminum, but I'm surprised at how it cycles the hum. It's like it'll hum, then it'll be quiet, then it'll hum again and so on.
I have another Hitachi 7k500 in my PC and it doesn't make any noise...
    What do you think?
    G5 Dual 1.8GHz 1GB RAM Mac OS X (10.3.9)
    MacPro Quad-core 2.66GHz, 2GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

A couple other people have taken similar measures. I bought a 10K Raptor last Sept that makes the case hum and vibrate. Bought a new one, doesn't do it.
I have two WD Caviar SE16s that are so quiet you don't know they are there. But a Maxtor MaxLine Pro sounds like some old big SCSI drive from centuries past churning away. But no case issue.
Sometimes making sure to tighten those bolts and firmly insert the drive is all that is needed. For months I had mine on its side rather than upright and the noise and hum was abated.
I like to take some tools to loosen up and break a drive in at first. Just zero the drive to insure all is well and scan all the blocks. Or use Speedtools to test media and performance.

I believe this error is attributed to the NULL value under LOCK_ID. I think that the value under LOCK_ID should be the name of the broker from the config file (even though I specified them in the config files). Any ideas?? THANKS!

Just some pointers -- maybe this will be of use:
If you haven't already read it, please take a look at the [ MySQL setup guide|https://mq.dev.java.net/OpenMQ_MySQLCluster_Setup_Guide.html] .
We recommend using NDB Data-store of MySQL Cluster, though this isn't an absolute requirement. Due to some issues we have found with earlier versions, we recommend using MySQL Cluster, 7.0.9 or better (the current version is 7.0.16, or 7.1.5). Either of these would contain Connector/J.
I'd also recommend using the latest version -- MQ 4.4update2 (just in case you happen to have an older copy). There were many minor improvements in the integration with MySQL from the original 4.4 release, to update 2. This is linked at the MQ download page: [https://mq.dev.java.net/downloads.html]

  • ISCSIprt errors with persistent disconnections

    What we need:
    ==========
Determine why we have Persistent iSCSIprt errors in Hyper-V cluster Windows Server 2012
    Environment:
    ==========
4x identical hosts Dell R720 running Windows server 2012 standard
    4x - iSCSI NICs: Intel(R) Gigabit 4P I350-t Adapter - Driver 12.1.76.0 - FW Family 13.0.0
    MTU set to 9000
Chimey disabled, auto Tuning disabled, congestion provider set to None
All kinds of OffLoad features were disabled in the iSCSI NICs properties
No teaming configuration is in place
RSS/TOE/TOEv2, Virtual Machine Queue (VMQ) and energy saving options are disabled
    2x PCT6224 - FW 3.3.5.5
    2 stack cables interconnecting them
STP port-fast enabled on all ethernet ports
MUT set to 9216 on all ethernet ports
Flow control is active in all ports
Speed in 1000 full duplex being auto negotiated
Multi, broad and unicast storm disable
None errors logged in any ethernet or stack ports
    3x EQL Storages
    2x EQPS6100X + 1x PS4100E all running 6.0.4
    Current situation:
    ===========
Customer is experiencing timeout and disconnections:
    * All four hosts are logging the following System Events every 1 minute:
ID 9 / Source iScsiPrt / Target did not respond in time for a SCSI request. The CDB is given in the dump data.
ID 39 / Source iScsiPrt / Initiator sent a task management command to reset the target. The target name is given in the dump data.
ID 129 / Source iScsiPrt / No Description
This events shows up only in Windows Server 2012 environment, the issue was isolated and do not occur with Windows Server 2008  in the same SAN.
    Troubleshooting steps so far:
    ===================
Disable windows Firewall and make sure the non-san subnets are excluded in the hit kit *
Make sure the latest drivers from Dell D&D are installed for the iSCSI NICs
    Jumbo Fram size setup correctly.
Disabled TOE, RSS and Large Send Offload, FlowControl setup
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disable netsh int tcp set global chimney=disabled netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled
    Followed some practices from here:
    http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/storage/f/3775/p/19480319/20326067.aspx
RSS/TOE/TOEv2, Virtual Machine Queue (VMQ) and energy saving options are disabled
All nodes are updated with the latest rollup update.
    Teaming not configured.
    Changed binding order on NICS
Disabled NetBIOS on iSCSI • Made sure that each NIC is NOT set to register its connection in DNS • Remove File and Printer sharing and Client from Microsoft networks

    VP

    Hello,
I have three Hyper-V 2012 (not R2) nodes and I'm experiencing similar issues.
I get iscsiprt error suddenly after a storage migration of a big VM ends: I launch the storage migration, it starts correctly and, more or less 60 seconds after it ends, iscsiprt errors appears in the event log of the node. I lose iSCSI connectivity with
the iSCSI target on the storage were the VM was on before migration. The storage migrated VM works because is already moved to the "new" storage but obviously all the CSV on the "old" storage become inaccessible, I can see them offline
or online (no access) so all the VMs that are on the old storage goes offline.
I noticed that it didn't happen eveytime I storage migrate a VM, but only sometimes and with big VMs.
I tried both with MPIO and with MCS since our storage supports both of them. I tuned some iSCSI parameters on the initiator. I leave a list of parameters I tried to tune at the end of this message.
The only thing I didn't do already is: disable RSS, disable TCP autotuninglevel and disable delayed ACK.
Someone can help me to understand what is causing these problems? What is AV you are referring to?
This is the parameters I tuned in order to increase timeouts but right now I didn't yet solved the problem:
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\mpio\Parameters
    UseCustomPathRecoveryInterval 0 -> 1
    PDORemovePeriod 20 -> 120
    PathRecoveryInterval 40 -> 40
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E97B-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\<Instance Number>\Parameters
    EnableNOPOut 0 -> 1
    MaxRequestHoldTime 60 -> 90
    LinkDownTime 15 -> 35
    Thanks in Advance,
    Davide

  • Satellite X200-191 = Laptop turns on 4 seconds, black screen,humming sound

    _*Satellite x200-191*_
    Core2 Duo T7700
    *Original:* 1024MB + 1024MB Memory 667MHZ / 512MB VRAM *Replaced:* Kingston Kingston KVR667D2S5/2G (I have this 2x)
*Original:* 200GB + 200GB Harddisk Drive (4200RPM) SATA *Replaced:* Only 1 HDD left, other one I will get back in 2 days.
    17 WSXGA+ TRUBRITE TFT Screen
    HD DVD-ROM Drive
    56K Modem / Lan
    W-Lan (802.11 A/G/N)
    1/3MPixel Web Camera
    Bluetooth
Microsoft Vista Home Premium 32 Bit
    _*My Problem:*_
I take out the battery, plug it in the power. Charging light turns on.
I press the power button, power led turns on. Followed by the hdd led turn on, which blinks real quick, stays on for 1 second, then turns of. The power led stays on during all the time.
2 seconds after the power button, a fan starts blowing, while the above mention hdd led blinks for 1 second, 2 seconds after the fan starting to blow, it turns off.
We are now 4 seconds farther, pretty much, everything stopts, except a very tiny minor humming sound. (I just left it on for a couple minutes, sound remains, nothing happens.) (While writing this all I left it on for 10 minutes, the laptop heats op a bit, the adapter gets hotter, but still only the very tiny minor humming sound.)
+So my laptop works for 4 seconds, wont give any screen (black screen) wont load even BIOS. What could be wrong ?+
    _*Fixing?:*_
Ok so I left the laptop after a couple of months, being told it was dead, just getting it dusty. (Read history to get this)
But since last week, I figured its getting dusty, I never opened a laptop before, why wont I try doing that.
_+*I replaced the Memory modules, Slot A and B , both memories , same time, one at a time, all possible ways.*+_
_+*Since I have only 1 HDD, I used it in both slots. Looks to no difference. Using NO HDD, I do NOT have the very tiny minor humming sound!!!*+_
I followed a guide [http://www.irisvista.com/tech/] to open my laptop, to see what is inside.
Finding no lose plugs, but did find a certein oil, and some white paste.
Closing the laptop, to try it out, I accidently screwed a couple wrong screws in the laptop, piercing the top cover of my laptop, but no chips were hit during this :P (Yeah, Im a bit to strong, I should have figured using force for a couple of the screws wasnt the best thing I could do, but now i know :p)
*SOOO* My question, while I wait for the extra old HDD (getting it in 2 days). (Probably making no difference)
What could be wrong, more precisly. Should I like try taking out the video card or something ?
Is there something I should do with some soldering?
Any tips/tricks that could work, wether to fix the laptop, or to narrow down the problem , to a small part which i could replace ?

    _*History:*_
Not sure if this is any important, but just to let you know, if intrested what happend all to the laptop ;)
I bought the laptop at Shape Computers (in the netherlands) Asking this laptop mentioned above, with 2 things changed. I wanted more Memory, and I wanted windows XP. The shop told me this was possible. They bought me the laptop in, they replaced the Memory with the kingston memories. They installed windows XP instead of the Vista. They laptop did work at this very moment. So I bought the working laptop, with 1 year warranty.
With the folders extra given with the laptop, I was able to increase my warranty from 1 to 2 years for free, so I did.
After probably a couple of weeks I noticed that the laptop was getting real hot, after longer usage. But according to the manual this was normal.
I did use the laptop for gaming, but also 2 months for a gaming study. So I did take it several times to school in a backpack.
After not using it for school anymore I reinstalled Windows Vista 32 BIT
At a very point not sure when precisly I noticed that it wouldnt turn on (probably same problem as I have now) but I was really relaxed about it, tried it later, and somehow it did work again. This happend perhaps about 5 times in total.
Knowing something was wrong, I took it back to Shape Computers. They checked it. (Not showing me what they did to it) But they told me I had nothing to worry about.
After about 2 years I actually sold this laptop to my mom. She used it a couple times (she is like realy noob, just about computers in generally, not even knowing if she should double click icons or not) She took it with her a couple times on trips, and they after about 2 years and 2 months ... this problem happend.
My mom knows a guy, and a friend of that guy, works alot with broken laptops, which told me that the problem was the _+motherboard+_.
I decided to take it back to the shop. After a long progress being down there (about 6 to 8 weeks)(Me going to the shop like 15 times). The shop managed to tell me it was the motherboard. That the motherboard couldnt be fixed and that a new one would be way to expensive.
+(I Known at this very point, after getting the motherboard back, that this laptop was not screwed open yet. The screws were still brand new.)+
Funny information(not for me), during this period of about 8 weeks, they actually told me lies like ... I left a message at your voicemail, I DONT HAVE A VOICEMAIL ... sorry for the caps but im still xxxxxx about those lies.
So still believing the shop ... my laptop is gone .... dead ... but then since last week, I started looking into the laptop myself ...(Fixing)

Ok, the company did not reply at all ... I ended up sending another email. And they did reply with a automatic message. Now weeks later still nothing more then that auto reply.
While I was waiting I contacted another guy that knows alot from these laptops. Getting a new part would cost me about 300 euros, and thats just the part, not even replace time.
Considering the toshiba help I have gotten ... (pretty much none) in these last years.
I declare my laptop dead. And decide at this very moment, that I (ofcourse) never will buy toshiba hardware again.
I might pay a bit more at my Dell computers, but the support in the last 8 years with 5 different computer systems and 1 laptop. Has been perfect in compare to the toshiba support I have gotten in the last 3 years, which just fails.
Thx tho all you guys for the replys.
