Persistent repetitive Finder relaunch

Every 90 seconds, my Finder spontaneously quits and relaunches.
Finder window changes made between relaunches aren't saved. (This started after installation of latest version of Quicktime via Software Update.) . . . DiskWarrior v.4 directory replacement does not fix the problem. Applejack aborts in mid-process. (The later has been the case for much longer than the Finder relaunch problem. And Mail stopped being able to Reply or Send a long time ago. . . . But I can live with these for now; I can't live with a Finder relaunch interrupting my work constantly.)

2008-06-10 12:26:48 -0700: Installed "QuickTime" (7.5)
2008-06-10 12:29:59 -0700: Installed "Security Update 2008-003 (PowerPC)" (1.0)
After installing the above Software Update, repairing permissions and restarting, Firefox quit unexpectedly. I rebooted Firefox 3 times and it quit unexpectedly each time. The final unexpected quit left my mouse and keyboard unresponsive on-screen. This has happened occasionally before but would not respond after unplugging the USB and re-plugging in another USB port (usual work-around).
I restarted the computer and since that restart, the Finder relaunches anytime I try to open the Applications Folder on my startup drive. Not only does the Finder relaunch, but it opens the 2 exact same Finder windows as were open when it first crashed.
Things I have tried without success.
1) Started the computer in Target Mode from my G4 PowerBook. Viewed all my Quicksilver's Preferences folders (in Library, System>Library and User>Me>Library) organized by date and compared them with my PowerBook Preferences Folders.
I dragged to the Trash, the Quicksilver User>Me>Library>Preferences that were dated at the time of the original crash, and replaced them with identical Preference files from the same location on my PowerBook. Restarted the Quicksilver logged in to Me. Problem persists.
2) I restarted Quicksilver from Admin User Account (Me User Account is Standard). The problem with the Finder does NOT occur in Admin User Account. Next, I archived Me User Account files to Users>Deleted Users. I restarted in Admin Account and and created a new Me User Account with the same name and password as old Standard Me User Account. Copied Mail and Mail Downloads to Users>Shared folder. (My Quicksilver failed to Sync with dotMac back in March, knew I should have sorted it out, only recent copy of AddressBook and iCal are in deleted Me User Account, ARRRGH!!) Problem persisted in NEW Me User Account both before and after copying Mail etc over. Tried this step 2 more times without copying any old Me User Acount files over. No dice.
3) Downloaded CharlesSoft 'Pacifist' and 10.4.11 Combo disk image. Tried verifying my System Files vs the Disk Image. Didn't understand how, which files and whatnot to repair. There were long logs of files that were suspect in Pacifist's opinion. Significantly exceeds my comfort level. What do Finder files look like in OSX 10.4 and where do they live? I have used Find to find Finder and it doesn't exist as an app?
4) Reset PRAM per another post. Nothing.
On occasion I can use Find to locate an application, drag it to the Dock and launch it. Applications will quit unexpectedly if I try to access the Applications Folder from the internal Application Finder (found this out trying to reload my FONTS in Linotype FontExplorerX had to Force Quit). Spotlight quits when trying to find anything in Applications folder. Find is dicey. Firefox works now. Been to preoccupied with this issue to try working on anything, afraid that the problem is progressive and I'm worried about not being able to BackUp.
MY problem. BackUps 3.1.2 has failed for the last couple weeks. I cannot get it to work. Also, I need my current calendar and address book from my original Me User Account.
Sorry for the long post, I've been living with this for a couple days. Any ideas short of re-installing the System and losing my calendar, address book, keychain etc?

  • Finder relaunches when viewing M2V file info ...

    I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this question, but I imagine I'm most likely to find an answer here. So, here it goes:
    As the topic states, the Finder relaunches itself whenever I try to view the file info of a M2V file. This happens when I'm attempting to "Get Info" or simply scrolling the window to the right. More specifically, this occurs when I reach the "Kind" column (removing "Kind" from the window disables the problem). While I wouldn't mind simply excluding "Kind" from my windows, I am still unable to "Get Info" on any M2V files. Any ideas why this may be occuring?
    The Files:
    - compressed with Compressor 2.0.1, via Final Cut Pro 5.0.2 (source media uses "Animation" codec)
    - MPEG-2 compression
    - 1-pass, 7.5 Mbs CBR, 29.97fps progressive, 720x 480
    The System:
    - Dual 1.8GHz PowerPC G5
    - 2.5 GB RAM
    - 372.62 GB SATA RAID (96.11 GB available)
    - OS 10.3.9 (all "Software Updates" installed)
    Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
    take care & God bless,
    Steve Cole

    I suspect you are seeing a variation of the problem discussed in the following link:
    Waymen, "quicktime 7.0.2. and m2v" #4, 11:35pm Sep 8, 2005 CDT
    However, since you experience a crash in the Finder when you try to access the Get Info you will have to use a different technique to reset the file association. Select one of the .m2v files that is giving you a problem and then do a control-click (or right click) to show the Finder's contextual menu, then go to the Open With item and select Other... and click the Always Open With checkbox and then navigate to your QuickTime Player and select it as the application to open. This will change the file association for the .m2v file kind and it should fix the problem. You may want to do a system reboot after you do the above fix.
    Summary: control-click or right click on the problem .m2v file then:
    Open With -> Other... -> (select "Always Open With" checkbox) -> Open (choose) QuickTime Player.
    If this suggestion helps in any way, a confirmation or acknowledgment would be appreciated, since that would also help others who may be having the same difficulty. Do for others as you would have them help you.

  • Finder relaunches after opening Apps folder

    I've seen other Finder relaunch posts, but the problem I've been having is a bit different.
    So, I recently decided to install the beta of Photoshop CS3 to see what it looked like. The installation went fine, and I was able to open the application. After opening it several times, I decided to open my Applications folder.
    But for some reason, it was taking longer that it usually does. I could see the spinning wheel in the bottom-right corner of my Finder window, and suddenly, the Finder just relaunched. This has been happening every time I try to open my Applications folder.
    So, I deleted the files that seemed to relate to PS CS3, restarted, and it's still happening. I then decided to run my machine in FW Target Drive mode on my second machine. When I tried to open the Applications folder from there, the Finder on my secondary machine restarted.
    Can anybody help me out with this? I've already tried deleting my com.apple.finder.plist and that didn't work. I'd really like to be able to access this folder, even though Quicksilver could hold me over until it's fixed. I won't be able to see a Genius until next week, and this is really getting on my nerves
    Thanks
    -Powerbook 17" 1.33 Ghz, 10.4.8

    It sounds to me like there is something inside the Applications folder with an illegal character in the name or some other sort of serious corruption, and when Finder tries to list the contents, it hits the bad file and then crashes.
    You could try rebooting from your install disk, dismiss the installer and go to the menu, select Disk Utility and run the Repair Disk and Repair Permissions functions, then restart.
    If that doesn't do it, well, no super easy and fast solution occurs to me. I would launch Terminal and see if it will list the contents of the Applications folder. It it will, then I think you would need to create a new folder, call it NewAppsFolder or something, then use Terminal to move everything you want from the old Applications folder to the new one. After you finish that rename Applications to OldApplications, the folder you created to Applications and see if it works. Then try to trash OldApplications. If that seems like a lot of bother, well, it is. Maybe just wait and see if the genius can sort it out.

  • Mac pro finder relaunch by itself when running CS2

    Hi, I got my Mac Pro running on Leopard Jan this year. Not long it starts to have issues.
    When I am in the midst of doing work cs2, the program suddenly shuts down abruptly, leaving a blue screen for abt ten secs and the other programs (eg. itunes and msn messenger) also shuts down as well. It is as if the finder relaunch automatically but suddenly.
    I called applecare but they are not sure whether there's a problem with my OS or hardware.
    Anyone can please advise me, I'm exasperated

    First of all, I finally figured out that when you write
    "com", you mean
    computer. :/
    Second, I told you in post #1:
    CS2 is not supported by Adobe under Leopard. There will be no patches or updates for any version earlier than CS3.
    I guess you didn't believe me. :/
    Third, you are right. You cannot revert to Tiger because your
    "com" won't support it.
    In order for an application to run in the native Mac-Intel environment, it has to be written for that CPU. CS2 cannot run natively on a Mac-Intel machine because it was written for PPC Macintosh computers so it needs to run in a software emulation mode called Rosetta. That's the difference between running natively and running in an emulation mode that emulates a pre-Intel PowerMac chip (PPC).

  • Finder Relaunches Constantly ... Can't Check Crash Logs

    I know, I know....
    The primary user on this eMac is having serious troubles because Finder relaunches immediately after login then continues to do so, so fast that we can't even start the console to check the logs ... not that this would help anyway because I think one of the problems is that I just used Onyx to clean and delete a bunch of things that I didn't know what were, including logs I think.... I know, I know....
    Anyway it's just this one user and we could delete it and start fresh but for reasons I won't go into we'd still be implementing damage control two months from now. What we did is commonly referred to as "Putting all your eggs in one basket."
    I just reset PRAM and removed all apps from the login thing. Repaired permissions, etc. I'm still reading threads here about this but the usual thing seems to be checking crash logs and like I said I think that's moot now.

    I'm still trying to figure out some other stuff as far as logs but if this helps here are system log entries from the last crashes:

  • Maverick : finder relaunch

    Hello everyone
    Since I've upgraded my MacBook Pro to OSX Maverick, my finder relaunches every 30 seconds.
    I didn't not install any new apps since Maverick

  • Finder Relaunching

    Hi all. I read through some older threads with similar problems, but I can't get rid of this bug. My system runs fine, but if I open my startup drive, there's a 5 sec. pause then the Finder relaunches. If I open my external drive, then I can access my startup from there. It still relaunches sometimes even there.
    As you can see below, Thread 0 crashed, but there isn't any info as to what crashed. I've run the lates Disk Warrior, rebuilt the directories (with a few issues), but at the prompt that says to Save in the final step, it crashes. Not sure if the directories were actually replaced or not.
    Booted in safe mode, trashed the finder.plist. Nothing.
    Can anyone shed any light on this?

    "Command: Finder

    Version: 10.3.3 (10.3.3)"
    That had to happen sometime back in August-2006 or perhaps under another earlier Security Update.
    My Finder was Version 10.3.2 for some time prior to the Security Update 2006-004 that shows;
    Article ID: 304063
    Date Created: July 14, 2006
    Date Modified: August 08, 2006
    My fix then required me to reformat and start all over.
    From what I now know is that I should have just Repaired Permissions and rerun the above mentioned updater. I feel something got messed up with that update because my permissions went wacky.

  • Does your finder relaunch every time ?

    Since i installed Mavericks the Finder relaunches itself every time (three or more times by minute).
    And i also notice that when i open an application in full screen, i can't stay on this wondow's application.
    Is it the same for you ?

    There have been hints to GoogleDrive being the culprit. See if quitting it remedies the situation.
    If you want to further use it: unchecking the "Show file syn status icons" in GoogleDrive's references helped with my installation.

  • Finder Relaunch when connecting to server

    Hello. I was wondering if anyone had some insight to why my finder relaunches when I GO>>>Connect to Server. I am connecting to an external network drive that is working fine with all other workstations. Thanks

    Hi there,
    That's a strange one I've not seen before, but try dragging this file to the Desktop, Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), off the HD & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more....
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist

  • Finder relaunches when I click on certain folders

    For some reason, finder will relaunch when I click on certain folders. Most folders are fine, but there are certain folders that will always cause finder to relaunch. I use Serato (DJ software) and I can use the files contained in those folders with no problems. But when I go to finder to go straight to the file itself, finder will relaunch.
    Any ideas?

    Thanks. Just tried that, and still the same problem. What's interesting is that I can get into those folders through other networked Macs. If I access my Macbook Pro (which is where I'm experiencing the problems) through my G5 desktop, the Finder on my G5 does NOT relaunch.

  • Finder relaunch issue.

    Often times when I resume my computer from sleep or turn it on; I will occasionally have to relaunch Finder to get Finder to work. Before I relaunch Finder I can't see any of my connected hard drives on my desktop, can't open a new finder windows, finder is almosts completely non-existent. I tried erasing the stored app data for finder and that seemed to help for a short period of time. I have noticed this issue ever since upgrading to lion, I did not do a fresh install, I installed on top of snow leopard.
    Any help would be much appreciated. If a fresh install is the only advice you have; I am planning on doing so once I get a new hard drive. I won't get a new hard drive until the prices drop (ie: Thailand flooding).

    . I tried erasing the stored app data for finder
    Are you referring to the preference file?
    Go to ~/LIbrary/Preferences
    Move the com.apple.finder.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
    Restart the Mac.
    Just checking... how much free space on the startup disk?
    Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.

  • Problem persisting after finding

    Hi everybody sorry about my english i have an issue that if driving me mad
    I'm making an GUI to manage cities i got a jtable that shows all the cities that the user may update and a jbutton that initialize all field to insert a new one
    If i click on a city (use find of tha jpacontroller) and then click on the button ( make a persist), insert the new one and update the previous with the data of the new!!!
    Here is the code:
    //NEW button reset fields
    private void botonNuevoActionPerformed(java.awt.event.ActionEvent evt) {
    tfCodigoPostal.setText("");
    tfNombre.setText("");
    tfCodigoPostal.requestFocus();
    ciudadActual=null; //Object that manage the actual city to update or insert is of class Ciudad (city in spanish)
    //Mouse releade method of the table
    private void jTableCiudadesMouseReleased(java.awt.event.MouseEvent evt) {
    controladorCiudad= new CiudadJpaController(); //JPA controller
    Integer fila=jTableCiudades.getSelectedRow();
    Integer valorCelda = Integer.parseInt(jTableCiudades.getValueAt(fila,0).toString());
    controladorCiudad=null;
    jLabel3.setText(fila.toString());
    private void jButton1ActionPerformed(java.awt.event.ActionEvent evt) {
    if (ciudadActual==null) {ciudadActual=new Ciudad();                                                     //if is null is a new city, make a new one and load the data if not only load data
                    ciudadActual.setCodPostal(Integer.parseInt(tfCodigoPostal.getText().toString()));
                    ciudadActual.setNombre(tfNombre.getText().toString());
    try{
    entityManager1.getTransaction().begin();
    if (ciudadActual.getIdCiudad()==null) //if there is no id then is a new one use persis else use merge
    entityManager1.persist(ciudadActual);
    else entityManager1.merge(ciudadActual);
    entityManager1.flush();
    entityManager1.getTransaction().commit();
    listaCiudades.clear();
    listaCiudades.addAll(queryCiudades.getResultList());
    } catch(Exception e) {
    System.out.print(e.toString());
    JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null,
    "No se pudo ingresar el registro:" + e.getMessage(),
    "Error de ingreso",
    JOptionPane.ERROR_MESSAGE);
    entityManager1.getTransaction().rollback();
    return;
    JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null,
    "Valores ingresados con exito",
    "Actualizacion exitosa",JOptionPane.INFORMATION_MESSAGE);
    If i click in a exiting city of the table then insert a new one 2 modifications to the database is made (insert the new city and update the one that clicked with the new data)
    and help will be apreciated
    thanks in advance

    It sounds like you are modifying an existing city object, instead of a new one. Ensure that you create a new city object and do not modify an existing one from the UI.
    If still stuck, perhaps include the full source to this class, where is ciudadActual used and where is it being modified. Sounds like the UI is directly modifying this object.

    Just loaded the last Security update and now the finder keeps re-launching itself every 90 seconds or so in the background. Have run Onyx and used disc utility to repair permissions. Programs are unaffected. Any ideas?
    (iMac G5 1.8 running 10.4.11)

    I had the exact same problem over the past couple of weeks on this older PowerBook that I use at home to read basically email. I finally decided to look up for a solution and this was the second link I read, which did the trick! I still do not know what triggered it, since I had StuffIt installed since forever and I don't recall making any changes in any preferences (at least consciously). Maybe some combination of keystrokes that I did not really intend to type had turned on this option. It's probably a good idea to ask StuffIt folks if they know about it or can do anything to prevent this from happening. It's really annoying and I do not know what controls the interval between the relaunches. Thanks Miriam, good job!

  • Icons keep moving to the upper right corner - a Finder relaunch fixes it but only for a short while

    I'm having an issue that really irks me and it's very frustrating.  Whenever I open certain programs (ie. iPhoto, Pixelmator, Safari (sometimes)) and I click to the desktop to either drag a file in or drag one out to the desktop, all the icons start gathering in the upper right hand corner on top of the Hard Drive icon.  No matter where I try to drag them, they all snap right back on top of the Hard Drive.  Now, I can stop this by option clicking and holding on the Finder dock icon and selecting Relaunch.  I can also turn "sort by" to none, but I am a little OCD and I like to have my icons snap to a grid.  Here's another vital piece of information.  I use my computer at work on an external monitor connected by the Thunderbolt port (an HP monitor) using a DVI adapter.  However, this occurs with or without using the external monitor.  I noticed this program started happening about 2 months ago after I swapped out hard drives (upgraded size) going from 500GB to 750GB.  I used carbon copy cloner to clone my hard drive as opposed to going with a fresh install.  I'm beginning to think this may have been a bad idea.  I have trashed all the Finder preferences, used Onyx to clear the .DS_stores and other tricks found on the internet.  Does anyone have a concrete way to fix this?  I am baffled with this one.  I've never seen this problem until recently.  Any ideas?

    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Trying to open Trash from Dock in 10.4.9 "spinballs" finder / relaunch

    Hi;
    I installed 10.4 Tiger and updated with Software update on two machines from the Family pak dvd.
    I than ran Combo 10.4.9 on one to fix a spotlight problem.
    On both machines, clicking on Trash in the dock puts the finder into an endless spinball that requires a relaunch.
    I tried renaming .Trash in my ~ folder and a new .Trash was created on reboot. It still spinball's finder.
    Any suggestions? I own the trash from ls -la
    thanks

    Curiouser and curiouser.
    OK, so the tactic i decided upon: renaming both .Trashes and Trash on each volume, resetting the permissions/invisiablity, checking that i really wanted to trash the stuff (i'm one of those "store in the trash" kinda person) and get back to normal.
    One great big help:

    Article on Invisiable files; i used the /Developer/Tools/SetFile -a v to make the folders visable once i mv'ed them to new names.
    I also, from finder, reset the ownership permission to me and did all enclosed folders. It's not perfect (there still seems to be nested invisible things; walk the directory tree in terminal and do a lot of "ls -al | more " commands to walk around and look if there's more there.)
    When i did the above to my external hard drive, bing! my trash worked again.
