Personal Domains, MobileMe and GoDaddy

Hi everyone,
I have purchased the domain for my personal Portfolio website through GoDaddy,
I followed the online instructions to add the domain to my Iweb through MobileMe, with it all saved whenever I try going onto my site (OllieHoff.co.uk) it just brings me to the Godaddy website. Anyone know where I have gone wrong?
Thanks!

Well, did you do everything that is needed?  It is not only at MobileMe that you need to make changes.  These need to be done at GoDaddy too.
Also, you don't add the domain to iWeb - iWeb is just what you use to create the site.  You enter the domain name into the personal domain name settings at MobileMe where the site is published.
You then need to log into your account at GoDaddy and go to the DNS settings and you need to set the CNAME to web.me.com and it should then work.
You need to do both because you are effectively linking your domain name at GoDaddy with you website that is published to MobileMe/the Apple servers.

  • Iweb, mobileme, and godaddy HELP!

I purchased a domain from godaddy.com, designed the website on iweb '09, and have chosen to host the site through mobileme.
After an initial CNAME error on my part, I have been assured by godaddy reps that everything is correct on their end. I have set up the personal domain on my mobileme account, and have published the site from iweb '09 to mobileme. I have waited for the site to propogate onto godaddy servers, and the website is not pulling up. I get an error message that states that the website is temporarily unavailable. I tried republishing through iweb, and nothing seems to help.
My mobileme account is not set to private, and all of the mobileme information is showing correctly.
What do I do to fix this--fast?
    Thanks!

Thanks for your help. I spent 4 hours yesterday at my local apple store to see if anyone had additional ideas, and finally a representative deleted the site from my iweb and had me create a new user on my mac. I set up the site through iweb under the new user, but we were still having issues, so we went into godaddy and changed the url forwarding and then masked the site. It was the only solution that worked, and I am thrilled that the site is up and working. I had followed all of the godaddy instructions on the site, and so did the apple reps, (we were troubleshooting mobileme, iweb and godaddy simultaneously) but nothing provided by the godaddy site or godaddy representatives worked. It was just a long process of trial by error that eventually brought us to a solution.
Thank you, everyone for your suggestions, and please know that I tried each one--multiple times. I truly appreciate the help.

  • Iweb was not publishing changes to my personal domain name, AND now it won't let me publish at all!

Hi, i am new to the apple community so bare with me whilst i struggle to explain...
I recently purchased a hosting site through netregistry.net.  www.toyboxtherapies.com.au I spoke to them to allow the changes to the CNAME through their site. They did this for me. Once they did this my original 3 page site that I had published to mobileme came up.
When i added changes to the site, none of them were published even though iweb said they had been. I gave the site 48 hours (well, i gave them a week) to update the changes.
I went to double check today and now iweb wont let me publish to my domain name at all, it just lists File>Set up personal domain on mobile me.
When I log into mobile me my domain name is there. I have tried removing t and setting it up again, but nothing is happening with iweeb. Still the same problem.
Please help! I am trying to get this business off the ground and its all very frustrating!

This is what I see in a Lookup :
    ; <<>> DiG 9.6-ESV-R4-P3 <<>> www.toyboxtherapies.com.au cname +multiline +nocomments +nocmd +noquestion +nostats +search
    ;; global options: +cmd
    www.toyboxtherapies.com.au. 3600 IN CNAME web.me.com.
It means that the CNAME record points to MobileMe.
So go where you manage your domain and delete the CNAME record and change the  A-record(s) to point to your new webhost.
It takes some time for the changes to propagate thru the internet. A minimum of 20 minutes.
Note that when you publish to MobileMe, iWeb recieves the domainname information from the MobileMe server. Only when you publish elsewhere you have to enter the domainname. But if you do not change the settings where you host your domainname, it still directs to MMe. But that's beyond iWeb.

  • Personal Domain help with GoDaddy

Hi - has anyone performed this with GoDaddy? I don't see where on GoDaddy you actually insert your .mac info as a CName. Is this different than forwarding? Thanks. Also, can you do this for multiple personal domain names?
    Steve

This is a helpful thread. I'm just dangerous enough to stumble my way through doing this, but I'm stumped right now with something unclear on GoDaddy's site:
When I go to edit the CNAME record for my domain at GoDaddy, the current settings are:
    Host: www
    Points To: @
Editing the cname record, I get the following options in the window that pops up:
    Enter an Alias Name:
    Points to Host Name:
I'm confused about where "web.mac.com" goes.
Do I enter it under "Enter an Alias Name" or "Points to Host Name"?

  • Is it possible to publish to personal domain name and publish blog to .mac?

I just finished publishing my website to a personal domain via iweb and .mac. Now I want to create a blog to post to .mac. Is this possible or will it automatically publish to my personal domain? I really don't want to mix business (website) with pleasure (blog). Thanks to all who post.

Create a separate site and put the blog page in it. You can make it easy to make two separate domain files, one for each site, and manage them with iWebSites or Multisite for iWeb. That will keep your personal site separate form your business one. Each will have a separate URL. The personal one will be http://web.mac.com/your .Mac account name/the site name/the site name.html (or index.html).
I use iWebSites to manage multiple sites.. It lets me create multiple sites and multiple domain files.
This lets me edit several sites and only republish the one I want.

  • So That I Understand Personal Domain Names and dotMac

We have several domain names registered to us with GoDaddy.
We like to use .Mac and the new iWeb, etc. to create a site, and then have the site accessed by using one of those (or several of those) domain names.
Is this now possible? I can type "www.mydomainname.com," and this will manuever to my .Mac site, and show "www.mydomainname.com?"
    Thanks

What you want to do has always been possible. You just set up domain forwarding/masking at godaddy. The new feature probably does this somewhat better.

  • Problem with iWeb after associating a personal domain name with my MobileMe

I think I did this by the book. I associated my personal domain name with my MobileMe account, then changed the CName pointer at GoDaddy to MobileMe (MM), then went back to MM and hit 'Done'. iWeb now lists my MM account as 'My account name (personal domain name). It took a little while for the DNS pointer to propogate, but now I can go to a browser, type in my personal domain name, and MM delivers my iWeb website as I wanted it to, apparently from my domain, not web.me.com. The problem is, as soon as the DNS propogated, MM delivers my MM site OK, but iWeb can't find the files for it anymore. All my pages immediately went red (unpublished) when I tried to update the site, and any attempt to Publish gives me this error "iWeb couldn’t connect to MobileMe. Make sure your Internet connection works and try again." I'm cable connected to an ADSL router, and Airport connected to a cable router, and neither service has dropped out. I've rebooted, and retried, and the website is up under my own domain, so GoDaddy and MM both got it right. What did I do wrong? Thanks, someone... anyone?

This is now sort of resolved, but not very satisfactorily. One of the trainers at my local Appple Store found an old support issue in the archives going back to 2008, which blamed security settings for update problems. Coincidental with associating MobileMe with my personal domain, I had checked the privacy box and added an ID and PW to the site. That was the problem, not the personal domain, that was preventing iWeb from finding my MM account. Uncheck that box and my site happily updates. Of course, now I have a site that I cannot make private. In this case, not a show-stopper, but disappointing. I have reported it as a bug in the latest version of iWeb. Thanks for your help.

  • Personal Domains and Multiple Sites

Hi, I've looked through several pages worth of questions but none of them seems to be exactly like what I want to get done.
First, I have 2 sites in iWeb. The second was created in iWeb '08 just because of the addition of the Personal Domain feature and so for the first time, I want a site that is hosted at Mac.com.
The first site is hosted elsewhere. I always publish to a folder and use an FTP software to upload it.
So, obviously, what I want to do is to use "Publish to .Mac" to upload my 2nd website ONLY to .Mac. But, iWeb seems to want to publish both. Even after I deleted the 1st website manually in iDisk, iWeb will publish a folder with the 1st website's name and throw in some content (like feed.xml, and "Media" and "Scripts" directories).
So, Question 1, can I make iWeb to stop this? Or, will have to create multiple Domain files and manage the 2 sites separately?
The other question is this. I just set up a CNAME thingy with Godaddy.
Let's say my domain is www.hogehoge.com.
I set the CNAME alias to web.mac.com.
In iWeb, I call the 2nd website "hogehoge" (just so I know which site it is). When iWeb publishes that site, everything goes inside
    Web/Sites/hogehoge
And when I access the site at www.hogehoge.com, the index.html in Web/Sites
will redirect me to the index.html (or, since I currently only have the blog file, /blog/blog.html file) inside the hogehoge directory, so the address looks like
    www.hogehoge.com/hogehoge/blog/blog.html
but that *****. I don't want the second "hogehoge". Is there any way to get rid of that?
Hope those questions were clear enough...

I've just started with multiple iWeb sites. While I still need to look at one of these utilities to manage multiple websites independently, I think I already figured out how to publish to multiple .Mac accounts from within my main user. The method below worked for me, although it published my entire set of sites, so yeah, still need to work around that.
Granted, having multiple users on your Mac, each associated with specific .Mac accounts would certainly work, and the cost is $0, but depending on where you keep files you need to access for each web site (like iphoto, itunes, etc), hopping between users could be a bit messy. I suppose you could store everything in the SHARED folder in the User directory, though.
    THE METHOD
Assuming you have a utility to manage multiple iWeb sites (the two popular ones seem to be iWebsite (free) and Multisite (shareware), neither of which I've tried yet), I THINK another way you can publish to a specific .Mac account is simply to go into SYSTEM PREFERENCES, click on the .Mac icon, and then SIGN OUT of your current .Mac account (do this right before you're ready to publish). You are then presented with a dialog to sign in to a different .Mac account ---> enter the access to the one you want to publish to. Now, when you hit 'Publish to .Mac' in iWeb, it defaults to THIS account and publishes it there. You just have to remember to go back into SYSTEM PREFERENCES and log back in to your original .Mac account when you're finished publishing.
The advantage to this, as I see it, is staying in my primary user and having access to all the files I need, as well as being able to switch to other apps and running programs in my primary account without issue.
Again, relatively new to iWeb, and I haven't played too much with this, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong ....

  • Multiple Personal Domains on MobileMe

Thinking about getting Mobile Me but between my wife and I we have four web-sites all with their own domain names.
I know that MobileMe definitely supports having one personal domain name and multiple sites but does it support multiple sites with different personal domain names and if so, how?
    Many thanks!

Welcome to the discussions. Yes, but on an Individual MobileMe account, only one domain can be configured via CNAME. The other domains have to be configured as "web forwarding" (with or without masking.) More details here:

A MobileMe *Family Pack's* members could each have a domain configured via CNAME:

  • Personal Domain confusion

Ok, iWeb says you can use a Personal Domain name, and instructs you to first give them the name (ie: yourpersonaldomain.com), then to go to your registrar and "define web.me.com as the new CNAME (alias) for your domain". First off, shouldn't web.me.com include your personal user name in the information (ie: web.me.com/yourname) or something like that? 2nd, I am using GoDaddy and they don't have a "define your CNAME", but something which seems simpler: enable forwarding, where you can plug in your web address, and also a feature called Masking which hides the address. Very simple, except I can not get any of this to work. Any suggestions? Many thanks! Dave B

    Dave B:
I have domain names thru GoDaddy and don't use the CNAME method. CNAME may have some benefits but since I have multiple sites that I have domain names for I opted to use the full URL for forwarding:
    http://web.me.com/accountname/site_foldername/index.html.
Adding the index.html after the site folder name is optional. You could use the html file of the first page in the site if you'd like. The index.html in the site folder file just points to the first page of the site.
Here's a screenshot of the forwarding and masking windows and how I used it.
I had domain names before the CNAME was available in iWeb so never learned how to use it.

  • Remove Personal Domain Problem

Hi. I had a personal domain setup and it was working fine. I recently removed the domain from my .Mac account. iWeb still thinks it is publishing to the domain, and shows the little green indicator light at the bottom with my domain. After it publishes, the Visit Site button tries to load up with my domain and not with the .mac address.
How can I get it to revert to the .mac address mode?

I'm pretty good on computers but my dad asked him to help him with a Mac problem so here I am...
Our good friend has built our website from his computer at his house, me and my dad need to be able to edit the website using iWeb (the same program our friend uses) so we can make appropriate changes...
We can log into the .Mac the same one that our friend uses but we can't figure out how to actually "load" the work our friend has already done so we can add to it and edit it...
    Any advice is appreciated

  • Personal Domain Name HELP - 2 names, 2 sites, 1 .Mac Account?

    Hey,
I need some help and advice about personal domain names and making them work with .Mac.
In iWeb (v1.1.2) I have created a Digital Portfolio, and then I have a writing site which I'm going to launch in the summer when I have plenty of time to redesign it - that site has four other created sites linked it to.
Anyway, on my CV I want to put a webaddress, but I'm not wanting the .Mac *http://web.mac.com/username/iweb/sitename.* I want something like: www.sitename.co.uk. However, I want one address for my Digital Portfolio, and then another later for my Writing Site (www.writingsitename.co.uk).
    Can this be done?
I've started looking for domain names, and www.123-reg.co.uk and www.ukreg.com seem to have the best prices. Anyone used them? Or suggest something else?
Thanks for any help, information and advice.

If you upgrade to iWeb 2 in iLife '08 you can use the Personal Domain feature; click here:

I am trying to use a personal domain name with my iWeb page. I found the directions to do so - it says go to File>Set Up Personal Domain. I am using iWeb 06 and I do not have an option under File (or anywhere else) to "set up personal domain". What am I doing wrong?

I wonder if you could help. I have iWeb 08 and have followed the instructions for personal domain name and its be 4 days now and my page is still loading with the long address. I've contacted .mac about his but nothing yet. Do you know what to do?
Did you purchase a personal name and, at the place where you have it, set the www CNAME to web.mac.com? Or arrange ordinary forwarding?
Could you provide your personal domain name plus the name you gave your site inside the iWeb app?
