Personal Edition for Linux

The personal edition of Oracle database server is only available for the Windows platform. Given the Oracle's increased platform support and even having their own version of Linux, is there any plan making personal edition available for the Linux OS as well ?
this is not a technical question - or using XE or using OTN license for development - etc, I am simply asking if Personal Edition become available for the Linux platform. (having a 64bit and/or 32bit 11gR2 personal edition running under X distro of Linux - for example).
Maybe an Oracle employee can answer.
thank you.

All of the various editions available are free to download and use for personal learning.Personal Edition is for business usage.
Personal Edition is a kind of "substract" of Enterprise Edition, same components, same core, except the license terms are very differents (the usage for business), and installation type is available only for Windows. An SR won't help for that.
Find out more in the installation type of the Installation Guide :

It has been discussed many times over here, enhancement request already submitted multiple times, suggested multiple times here or there :

Why is Personal Edition only available in WIndows?

Win98 was released in the late 97/98 and the Oracle version then was 7 and the then brand new 8i version. Cannot recall ever seeing 9i for Win98. Do recall running PO 7 on Win95 and Win98.

  • Error installing Oracle 9i Database Enterprise/personal edition for win xp

    Hi,
Not sure if anyone can help me, but I just finish downloading the
Oracle Database Release 2 Enterprise/Standard/Personal Edition for Windows NT/2000/XP (32 bit)
When I finished unzipping the 3 files into Disk1, Disk2, and Disk3 folders I tried running the setup.exe file but nothing happens.
I am using windows XP as my operating system. Can anyone tell me why the setup is not working?
    Thank you.

    XP Professional, or XP Home?
There are a lot of cases where people have tried and failed to install on XP Home. Also a few successes.
Also, how is your firewall and anti-virus software configured. Those may be blocking your install process.

  • Voting Thread for the SAP NetWeaver ABAP Developer Edition for Linux

    Hi Everyone,
as Mario Herger suggested in the discussion to his Blog [New Community Developer License is available|/people/mario.herger/blog/2010/01/20/new-community-developer-license-is-available] I start the topic requesting a SAP NetWeaver ABAP Developer Edition for Linux.
    Best regards

I think having a pre-packaged VMWare machine running on Windows or Linux would be great as it would help a lot of the non-Basis consultants get a system up and running. Perhaps even offer it as an AMI package on AWS so that hardware is not an issue.
I'd also like to see the traditional installation packages offered as many technical consultants use the build as a process to look at installation issue and post installation configuration.
I think both the pre-built and build it from scratch approaches have an audience here on SDN and I'd like to see both being offered.
In fact I'm just looking at the new license options one of which come with the DVD's which is ideal but at a price!

  • Oracle9i Database Release 2 Enterprise/Standard/Personal Edition for Windows NT/2000/

    Hi,
Ive just been trying to download your Oracle9i Database Release Enterprise/Standard/Personal Edition for Windows NT/2000/XP for my home computer, but it wont even download properly. The Disk 1 file, "92010NT_Disk1.zip", intializes, and downloads in less than a second, saying all 67.7kb is complete, taking into consideration the file is over 600mb big. When i open the *.zip file, its absolutely empty. I tried the links for Disk 2 and Disk 3, and they are working perfectley.
    Whats going on?
Is there a bug on my side, or OTN's?
    Will this be fixed soon?
Or should i download an older version?
A little feed back would be grately appreciated, due to the fact i cant find the latest version of Oracle anywhere else on the World Wide Web.
    Thank you for your time.
    - File: 92010NT_Disk1.zip
    - Date/Time: 03/09/02 11:30PM
    - Internet Browser: IE 6.0.2600.0000
    - O/S: Windows 2000
PS: Your "Preview" Button didnt seem to work for me either.

    Hi Peter,
I downloaded the same zip files as you did for my home pc. The first zip file was not able to be unzipped by winzip. So I had to download the fisrt zip file again from OTN and the second time it was fine. I got all three zip files extracted and ran the setup.exe. Everything was fine till this point.
My problem is that Oracle 9i release 2 personal edition is not for XP home edition. I couldn't get the database correctly configured.

  • Oracle 9i Personal Edition for Windows 98

I am having problems installing Oracle 9i Personal Edition for Windows 98. The install is hanging at the same place every time.
The installer works fine, but at the end of the install, when the Oracle Configuration Assistant tries to create the new database, the system "hangs". On a Gateway PC, there were fatal exceptions about VxD and vVMM. I finally had to power down the PC. I tried again and got the same error.
On a Compaq PC, when the Configuration Assistant started, it tried to access my floppy drive and opened a console window with "Abort, Retry, Fail". I chose "Abort" and the configuration continued, but the system hung when trying to start the Oracle instance.
I am evaluating different software packages and need to install Oracle in order to test them.
    Thanks for your help.

if you go to iSelfSchooling.com, you will find Oracle Installation Issues on Windows. It gives a list of "default usernames and passwords" and also states that you can leave the HOST name blank to get at the starter database.

  • Personal Edition on Linux?

Can anyone explain why one can license Oracle Database (any version) Personal Edition on Windows Server but not on Linux? Both OSs are designed to support multiple users, are they not?
    Ref: http://download-east.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/license.102/b14199/editions.htm#BABDJGGI

So Oracle database Personal Edition does have meaning on Windows Server context but not on Linux Enterprise?
Many organizations I know use Red Hat Enterprise Server, or SuSE Enterprise Linux in ''dedicates user' mode. Not to mention those developers and consultants who want a supported environment for Oracle EE and *nix and have an enterprise Linux machine.
Running a single person consulting shop, I find the combination of RHES and Oracle PE totalling USD$650-700 for supported development is a lot easier to swallow than needing to go to a Oracle EE license for an added $50,000. (Too bad SE or XE do not support options like SPatial.)
Right now, the ONLY reason I have any Windows machine left in my shop is for Oracle PE.

  • Oracle 8i Personal Edition for windows 98

I have received the personal edition from
    Oracle.
I did the installation which completed without errors.
Then, I went to start up the database. The
database started, but would not mount.
The error that I got was...
    Ora-00202: controlfile:
    'c:\oracle\ORADATA\orcl\control01.ctl'
    ora-27041: unable to open file
    osd-04002: unable to open file
o/s-error:(OS 3) The system cannot find the path specified.
ora-205 signaled during: Alter database mount exclusive...
    archiving is disabled.
What I discovered was that the control file
    it was looking for control01.ctl
    was not on the cd.
Any idea how to get rid of this problem??
If I need this control file, what is it for
and where would I get it??
    Thanks for your help...

    Hi,
    I figured it out.
For some reason, when I installed the "typical" install, it failed.
But, when I did the Database install only,
which installed the database properly, then
did the "typical" install which installed the
additional stuff (sqlplus, etc.), it worked.
    Thanks for your help, though.
Please see my other problem regarding using
    the developer tools.

  • Disk 2 of 9i Enterprise Edition for Linux corrupted

I've attempted to download the second disk of 9i EE for Linux four times already and everytime, when I unzip it, I get a file corrupt error, which isnt surprising because the downloaded file size is only 450Mb. I monitored my last download from start till end and I'm very sure I received all the bytes. I'm beginning to believe that the source is really corrupted!

1). download from the second link.
2). Yes. After few pre-install configurations.

  • Personal Edition for Windows 95

I have an old PC that I want to load a copy of Oracle on for training. The PC has windows 95 on it and I can't upgrade the OS because the PC is 7 years old.
Where can I get a copy of Personal Oracle that runs on Windows 95. Looks like you can only download 9i from OTN.
    Thanks,
    Jolene

I doubt you'll be able to get the software from Oracle. Oracle only ships current software, not older versions. You could try a news group and ask to buy an old CD from someone?

  • JSP in Oracle 8i enterprise edition for linux

    Well, the thing is,
i'm trying to configure my server to run with JSP, i've tried ererything, map the directories, see de wrapper_classpath, everything, even servlet zones, but my problem, is that i can't put JSP to work, all the time it gives me this error:
    java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: sun/tools/javac/Main.
I believe this is a simple thing, and probably a stupid one, but i just can't figure it out. I would like someone, if possible, to help me in this one.
i'm sorry to be spending your precious time.
    Nothing else.
    I than you in advance
    Nuno Rodrigues.

if you're using ias 8i/9i or rdbms 817
    consider the following :
    Problem Description
You are trying to call a simple Java Server Page using iAS on Tru64 Unix.
The call fails with java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: sun/tools/javac/Main
    Solution Description
Go to the Jserv configuration directory ($ORACLE_HOME/Apache/Jserv/etc)
    and edit the jserv.properties file.
    Uncomment the following line :
    #wrapper.classpath=/jdk12_home/lib/tools.jar
Replace jdk12_home with the location of your JDK, typically
    /usr/opt/java122
If you are using JDK 1.1.X, replace tools.jar with classes.zip
    (e.g. /usr/opt/java118/lib/classes.zip)
    Explanation
Java Server Pages need to have access to the java compiler, in order
to generate the servlet from the JSP.
The JDK is not automatically included in Jserv's classpath
