Personal File sharing is on but not working

This problem has been plaguing me for some months. When I try to access the problem computer on the network it will not show up until I turn off Personal File Sharing and then turn it back on. Then all works fine for several days until it doesn't work, and then I repeat the process (turn PFS off and then back on again) to make it work. I can't make an association with any third party programs that might be contributing to the problem.
I thought that the problem might go away with the purchase of a new iMac (10.4.10) and initialized with Migration Manager. Apparently, I imported the problem.
In the past I've tried restart with opt-cmd-P-R which works for awhile and then the process start over again. I've also tried dragged /Library/Preferences/com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist to the trash and restarted.
Anybody have any ideas on how to solve this one? Is there a log file that might show when PFS is tampered with?
Thanks in advance.

At this point I think you should get Applejack...
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...
applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
Also, if you trash those files again, and it re-occures again, I'd suspect RAM maybe.

  • Power book G4 Leopard 10.5.8. File sharing preference checked but not working after start up until unchecked and the rechecked?

I hope the title is enough info, please ask. In the mean time I have created an applescript to open preferences/ sharing and uncheck then check the file sharing box. This works but I would obviously prefer it just work normally. I have no corrupt preference files. Perhaps a file is missing? Thank you.

    Greetings Kwnez
I'm not up to your level of expertise yet. I'm networking and file sharing too, on my Mac Powerbook 1.33 GHz PowerPC G4; OS 10.5.8 Lepoard. At the public library I found by asking the clerk a book Authored by David Pogue. "Mac OS X Leopard the Missing Manual". It (the book) has helped me ask better questions. I'm not saying that your question "
Power book G4 Leopard 10.5.8. File sharing preference checked but not working after start up until unchecked and the rechecked?
is hard for me to understand, I went to system preferences and looked at the sharing box. when I clik it it opens up and the first thing I see is my computers name, and under that i see, " Computers on your local network can access your computer at: ...-powerbook-g4-15.local"
What I'm saying is "Are we on the same Page"

  • Printer and File Sharing with Windows is not working

I have a MacBook Pro, Vista machine, and an XP machine on my network.
The MacBook Pro is running 10.5.2.
The Windows machines can see the MacBook Pro and access files on it, but I cannot see the Windows machines in Finder - thus I can't access the printers on those machines.
If I goto 'Finder> Go> Connect to Server' and enter smb://ipadress I am able to mount the shares and access them.
But obviously this does not help me with Printer sharing.
Any help is appreciated, but FYI I have been reading many suggestions and none have worked.

Go to "System Preferences/Security/Firewall" and change settings to: "Set access to specific services and applications". "File Sharing" and "Printer sharing" were already present for me, I don't know how to get them if they are not, and I don't know what the ramifications for security are. I can now see Windows computers and printers.

  • File sharing with MBP does not work

The problem is that I cannot connect to my first-gen MacBook Pro from my 2 Ghz Intel iMac in my own home network. I have tried opening all ports in the sharing menu without success. The laptop shows up in the finder window but no connection is made. There is not even an error message. It simply says (after a long while) that the connection failed. Nothing even happens when I try to click on the "connect as" button. This is true for file sharing and screen sharing. I can connect to the iMac from the laptop, ironically enough. I was able to connect both ways at one point. My set-up is as follows: airport express connected to modem/router; iMac and laptop connected wirelessly to airport express. Any ideas would be great. I am at a complete loss as the laptop has no other connection issues of any kind.
Update: I just got an error message for the first time: The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and your network connection and try again.

Connecting via "connect to server" in finder menu using afp does not work either. FYI. It just tries connecting for a long while and then gives me the following error (-36). The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "afp://....." could not be read or written.

  • File Sharing on the Network not working properly

Hoping someone can help and not really sure if its the right place to ask but I am totally at a loss so thought I would give it go. Technically it is an issue with logging onto the Shared Folders from a Media Player but not sure if the issue has been caused by settings on the Mac.
I have an IMAC with shared folders that can be accessed on a network. Can be accessed fine by all users.
I also share the folders with a Philips Media Player HMP/5000 which allows you to stream media via wifi from your network. I have had no issues with it streaming from the Mac up until yesterday when I upgraded to Maverick Operating. System.  Now when I try to access the shared folders the Philips Media Device wants a Network Login and Password which it never wanted before. I changed none of my file sharing permissions and everything is as it was. I don't understand why all of a sudden it wants a network login. I have tried my user name and password for my Mac but that doesn't work.
Nothing in the UserGuide for the Media Player talks about this. I contacted Philips and they said it is an issue with my computer not letting me access the files.
I am wondering if the upgrade to Maverick has somehow changed some sort of settings somewhere which no longer allows this device to access the shared folders?
My file Sharing is on and states that everyone has access. My firewall is turned off.
    Anyhelp would be greatly appreciated.

Although not directly an answer to your question, I recommend you use a wifi router to allow all your devices to get onto the Internet. I never recommend using Internet Sharing with a computer. Sorry I could not directly answer your question.
That said, someone will be along to help you with Internet Sharing.

  • File Sharing Between 2 iMacs not working on Leopard

My son and I have iMacs on a home LAN as part of a larger network comprising four computers. Prior to the last Leopard update (both iMacs are recent Intels with Leopard), we could reciprocally share content via the Finder under "Shared". Now, I can access his computer with no problems, but when he tries to access mine, the connection fails. I have read that this is a glitch of the Leopard update, but can anyone help? We are running the identical OS update, our Firewall settings are set for specific applications including AFP, sharing is set to "On", yet I can mount his HD but he can't mount mine.
It's driving us crazy! Why my computer shows up on his Shared menu under finder but doesn't connect after having done so prior to the first Leopard update tells me that something in the update may have screwed things up. Please help!

    hi,

i've tried disconnecting the secondary, reconnecting, nothing manages to refresh the list of shared directories.
am i missing an important step along the way? i'd like to avoid having to copy all my files to the 'public' folder just in order to share them.
    thanks
You are connecting as a guest. To connect as an administrator, in the Finder either click connect as, or if you are already connected as guest, click disconnect and then click connect as.
A login window will appear. Enter the administrator username and password for the other machine and you have full access to all the files.

  • File sharing through i-tunes not working

I found out reciently that you could transfer files through i-tunes with particular apps. I have tried repeatedly but no file share option appears in app section of i-phone when connected to i-tunes. A friend of mine had the same app as me an is able to use file sharing but he has a mac instead of a pc. Would that make any difference. Any help would be great,
    Thanks

File sharing should work on both Windows and Mac, but the app has to be designed to do it. As the same app works on our friend's iPhone all I can think of is that you don't have the same version of the app.

  • File sharing 10.8.2 not working

I have two macbook pros and a mac pro connected on a lan. two computers are running osx 10.6.8 (mac pro and mac book pro) and the third is running 10.8.2. (new macbook pro). The one running 10.8.2 can see the other two in the finder but will not connect to them after typing in password through "connact as" button. The two running 10.6.8 can file share between them no problem but get a connection failed message in finder when trying to connect to the 10.8.2 machine with the "connect as" button. Is anyone else having this issue?

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work.

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode.  Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal.

  • File sharing between macs oddly not working

I'm trying to share folders between two macs running Lion (at work so sharing is important) but the one computer doesn't connect.
    The problem.
Mac1 is set up to share and appears in the shared list on Mac2.
When Mac2 tries to connect to Mac1, I have a Connection Failed with a pop up that reads
"There was a problem connecting to the server " 'Users' iMac".
Check the server name or IP address, and then try again. If
you continue to have problems, contact your system administrator."
Mac1 can actually connect to the shared folders on Mac2 so there only seems to be a conflict 1 way..
I don't have any other alerts throughout the system that relates to IP address and Mac1's name is correct.
Really puzzled. My knowledge of IP address and problems with IP conflicts is limited so I'm not sure how to get things to work..
    Hope you can help.

  • Receiver File Channel is green but not working

    Hi,
I have a service which receives the data form a sender channel and send the same data after content conversion to a reciever channel.
In the communication channel monitoring I can see the log for the sender channel and the processing log is displayed even if no file is there in the specified location for the channel to pick up.
For the Received channel, no processing log is being displayed and it is not processing the file even though the same service is being used.
    What am i missing here?
    Can you please advice?
    Regards,

    Hi! Archana,
Just check once again the below mentioned steps..even though u have configured correctly...
    Do one thing..
    1) go to Rwb > Component Monitoring>Select Adapter Engine> below that Select TEST MESSAGE tab-> there enter your PAYLOAD and also give your scenario details once again and try to test the scenario again.
    2) You can also do the same test at the Integration Engine level instead of selecting Adapter ENgine u need to seleect Integration Engine ok
    3) By doing this the PI Server will took the payload directly from the RWB instead of Sender  ADapter so that you can come to know where exactly you strucked whether at adapter engine or Integration Engine level.
    4) Also you can check your messages in the below URL at MEssage Display tool other than SXMB_MONI and RWB in detail..
    5) Also monitor your message at Ingration as well as Adapter Engine level in Message MOnitonig at RWB.
    6) Try to check both the queues at SMQ1 and SMQ2.
    7) If possible refresh your CACHE once at SXI_CACHE.
    Regards::

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these files to the Desktop.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist
(Then Trash the original of this one, as "moving" it only copies it.)
    Then reboot once more.
Try to setup Personal File Sharing again.

  • Personal file sharing is not working from Snow Leopard (10.6)

I am having hard time making the personal file sharing on my MacBook running 10.4.11 accessible from my work computer MacBook Pro running 10.6.2.
They are connected to the same router.
On 10.4.11 MacBook side, I turned off Firewall and started Personal File Sharing.
On 10.6.2 MacBook Pro, I saw the MacBook below "SHARED" in the side bar of Finder window. I double clicked on the icon. It showed all users of the MacBook. I double clicked on one user, then an error dialog showed and the connection had been disconnected. Since then, only "Not Connected" is shown in the Finder window. There is no Reconnect button. I had to reboot 10.4.11.
Should 10.6.2 be able to open the public folders on 10.4.11?
What is the best way to trouble shoot this?

I had much the same problem except that it was a PB running 10.4.11 to a G4 running same.
    Check this article - http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20070226213016446
The PB could connect to an iMac with no problem and the G4 could connect to the PB and iMac and vice versa.
Turns out that com.apple.ByteRangeLocking.plist had been deleted from the G4 Root Library at some point. Copied it from the user preference file and everything now works again.

  • Personal File sharing doesn't work

I'm trying to transfer files from my G4 to my G5.
    I've been successful until now.
All of a sudden my G4 will not allow me to enable Personal File Sharing.
I click the "Start now" button, and nothing.
I have also been having start-up and sleep problems as well as mouse cursor disappearing after sleep mode. Could they all be related?

I'm using a Network cable on the G4.
    Airport card on the G5.
    Aftermarket wireless G router.
As I said it worked fine just hours before. Now won't network at all.
I'm using an Apple USB mouse.
G4 will sometimes just freeze after chime and screen will not come up, or comes up very slowly. Mouse will often disappear after waking from sleep mode. Or sometimes it will not wake from sleep. I've removed all peripherals except Apple monitor and mouse.

  • IP address not showing in personal file sharing

I recently upgraded to Tiger (am running 10.4.6 on imac G5) and not sure if this started straight after upgrade, or since I had a hiccup with my wireless broadband connection and my mac started to run an airport configuration, which I stopped.
When I go to the services tab in sharing, instead of showing afp://192.~ under personal file sharing, it shows afp://my computer's name.home Also it now shows .home instead of .local, which is also not right. The same thing is also happening in windows sharing (which also shows .home instead of .local and no IP address). In the system profiler my domain name is shown as home. I don't know if this is the reason why it shows .home not .local. In the top of the sharing window, it shows my computer name as .local
I am able to connect to the net normally and can get my mac to see my pc laptop through wireless network. However if I put my IP address in safari, it says it can't connect to the server (may not be doing it right).
When I first noticed something was wrong, the server in the network pane was showing my computer name has changed from ------.local to unknown followed by my airport id.home. I have changed the computer name in my router settings to the correct name and now shows my computer's name.home. I also have a mystery folder called Bt suddenly appeared, which is showing a connection to a server called Thomson.
I know that once up a time everything was OK (definitely when running 10.3.9). I don't know if binning the com.apple.networkconfig.plist file would rectify things, but I have no idea as to how to put things right.
Any help would be gratefully received. Thanks

    A few ideas/questions...
First suggestion is to get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, boot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
This will assure that the filesystem, Permissions, etc are OK, it'll clear caches nicely too.
    Then get Little Snitch...

    /Users/nnnnLibrary/Preferences/com.apple.internetconnect.plist
