Personal file sharing: not possible

Hi all, when I tried to turn ON Personal File Sharing , it switchs back to Off. Any ideas.

Hi Borec,
It could be that your System Preferences plist file is corrupted.
Navigate to User/Library/Preferences folder, and find the file:
com.apple.systempreferences.plist
Trash this file, and reattempt to reset your Personal File Sharing. (By the way, you'll need to reset all your system prefs, after you trash the above file...)

Personal File Sharing not in Sharing list

Hi. I am running Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.8 and I would like to turn on the Personal File Sharing service under Sharing from the System Preferences menu. Unfortunately, the only services available in the list are Remote Login, Apple Remote Desktop and Remote Apple Events.
Any advice on adding Personal File Sharing to the Sharing list would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Personal File sharing is on but not working

This problem has been plaguing me for some months. When I try to access the problem computer on the network it will not show up until I turn off Personal File Sharing and then turn it back on. Then all works fine for several days until it doesn't work, and then I repeat the process (turn PFS off and then back on again) to make it work. I can't make an association with any third party programs that might be contributing to the problem.
I thought that the problem might go away with the purchase of a new iMac (10.4.10) and initialized with Migration Manager. Apparently, I imported the problem.
In the past I've tried restart with opt-cmd-P-R which works for awhile and then the process start over again. I've also tried dragged /Library/Preferences/com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist to the trash and restarted.
Anybody have any ideas on how to solve this one? Is there a log file that might show when PFS is tampered with?

At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
Also, if you trash those files again, and it re-occures again, I'd suspect RAM maybe.

IP address not showing in personal file sharing

I recently upgraded to Tiger (am running 10.4.6 on imac G5) and not sure if this started straight after upgrade, or since I had a hiccup with my wireless broadband connection and my mac started to run an airport configuration, which I stopped.
When I go to the services tab in sharing, instead of showing afp://192.~ under personal file sharing, it shows afp://my computer's name.home Also it now shows .home instead of .local, which is also not right. The same thing is also happening in windows sharing (which also shows .home instead of .local and no IP address). In the system profiler my domain name is shown as home. I don't know if this is the reason why it shows .home not .local. In the top of the sharing window, it shows my computer name as .local
I am able to connect to the net normally and can get my mac to see my pc laptop through wireless network. However if I put my IP address in safari, it says it can't connect to the server (may not be doing it right).
When I first noticed something was wrong, the server in the network pane was showing my computer name has changed from ------.local to unknown followed by my airport id.home. I have changed the computer name in my router settings to the correct name and now shows my computer's name.home. I also have a mystery folder called Bt suddenly appeared, which is showing a connection to a server called Thomson.
I know that once up a time everything was OK (definitely when running 10.3.9). I don't know if binning the com.apple.networkconfig.plist file would rectify things, but I have no idea as to how to put things right.

Restart your computer?
Repaired Permission & restarted your computer?
Run "Repair Disk" from your install DVD?

Personal file sharing is not working from Snow Leopard (10.6)

I am having hard time making the personal file sharing on my MacBook running 10.4.11 accessible from my work computer MacBook Pro running 10.6.2.
They are connected to the same router.
On 10.4.11 MacBook side, I turned off Firewall and started Personal File Sharing.
On 10.6.2 MacBook Pro, I saw the MacBook below "SHARED" in the side bar of Finder window. I double clicked on the icon. It showed all users of the MacBook. I double clicked on one user, then an error dialog showed and the connection had been disconnected. Since then, only "Not Connected" is shown in the Finder window. There is no Reconnect button. I had to reboot 10.4.11.
Should 10.6.2 be able to open the public folders on 10.4.11?
What is the best way to trouble shoot this?

I had much the same problem except that it was a PB running 10.4.11 to a G4 running same.

The PB could connect to an iMac with no problem and the G4 could connect to the PB and iMac and vice versa.
Turns out that com.apple.ByteRangeLocking.plist had been deleted from the G4 Root Library at some point. Copied it from the user preference file and everything now works again.

Personal File Sharing - Shared Folders not found

I have a mbp and 2 iMacs. They connect to the internet through an airport extreme. I would like to share files between them all. I have tried using personal file sharing in System Preferences. I turned it on, on all the machines. I also turned on apple talk under Network in System Preferences. All of the machines can ping each other yet when I go to Network no folders come up.
Do I need to do anything with the router or any other settings?
Any help would be great. Thank you.

Personal File Sharing between Remote Networks

Trying to connect my Mac (OS 10.4.9) in one state to a Mac in another state (OS 10.3.9). I am connected to the internet via Airport. Second Mac is connected to the internet via DSL modem. With file sharing turned on, on both computers, and firewalls turned off (System Preferences: Sharing: Firewall Off), neither computer can connect to either computer via Personal File Sharing (I went to Go: Connect to server... Then entered the correct IP address).
Also, have not been able to use my computer as an FTP server (System Preferences: Sharing: FTP Access On) such that the second computer can connect via Cyberduck (FTP client software).
I know little about all this, but in my research over the last two days I am unsure why my efforts have not worked (for either Personal File Sharing or FTP connections). the following two Support pages on Personal File Shariing have not worked for me:

This is like saying the Interstate highway system makes it easy to drive from one city to another. It's true, but you need to know something about driving first. Similarly, you need to know something about Internet traffic.
To continue with the highway analogy, let's say your data is like a car. Actually, it's a packet with addressing information inside. The key addresses are source and destination IP addresses. When inside your town, or LAN, it's got local addresses. Maybe your computer is 10.1.1.2 and your printer is 10.1.1.3 and a car destined from your computer to your printer has a source of 10.1.1.2 and a destination of 10.1.1.3. This is like saying take a left at Main Street.
But there are maybe millions of Main Streets. Where this all changes is where we go out to the Interstate, or global Internet. Your router is your gateway to this traffic. It has two interfaces, one side talks to your locality and it has a number like 10.1.1.1, and another side which talks to the global Internet and might have a number like 71.126.45.113. As your car goes through this router, it's source number changes to become that of the router (71.126.45.113). This is so it can find its way back, and others can follow. The local address has no meaning out here. When it (or rather another car) returns, the router swaps the addresses back and sends it to the local network. This process is called NAT (Network Address Translation).
Now, the problem you find is that you can reach the destination router, and what you want is to get to another machine in that locality, but there is no local destination. You get to the toll booth at the end of the Interstate, but the toll taker doesn't know where you want to go. This is where ports come in. Your car has a number which corresponds to a service. In this case, the port is 548 and the services is Apple Filing Protocol over TCP. The toll taker know this. "Oh yes, Mrs. Johnson on First Street handles afpovertcp. Take a left on Main Street." This is called port-forwarding. You set the router to send requests for port 548 to the machine you want shared.
Another possibility would be to disable NAT. This has some drawbacks. If you have more than one machine, you may violate your contract with your ISP. You also open yourself up to certain attacks and need to be much more careful. There's another possibility called DMZ, but that's like disabling NAT for one machine.
I hope this clarifies things. You need to use the addresses of the routers, and forward the ports you wish to use. There's one more consideration: unless you have static IP addresses, those are likely to change. You can use a service like www.dyndns.com to use a host/domain name to connect your machines. It's free and easy.

File sharing not working

First, sorry this is so long but it needs a good explanation. I first posted this in the airport forum but I have decided it must not be an airport problem. Here it is: I have two macs and a pc connected wirelessly by a linksys wrt54g. The macs have worked perfectly for quite a while but the pc refused to stay connected due to a weak signal even though only 50 feet from the access point. After trying signal boosting antennas and such I finally moved the access point and wired the pc directly to the router. After resetting everything the pc now works fine, the macs connect to the internet and can connect to the pc, the pc can see the macs, but the two macs can no longer see each other. All settings are the same as before. The wireless network seems to be working fine, It seems like file sharing is not working between the macs. I have tried resetting everything several times. I turned off file sharing, restarted the macs , repaired permissions, restarted the macs and then restarted file sharing. Still no go. I'm not new at this but this really has me puzzled. Does anyone have any ideas?

Two Macs Networked, file sharing not working correctly

Okay, I've had a Mac Pro since February this year and it has been connected to a new iMac since about two days ago. Both computers can see each other on the ethernet network (their respective icons appear in the Finder sidebar). However, something weird is happening because not only are the correct "iMac" and "Mac Pro" icons showing, but also Windows "blue screen of death" icons are appearing also! These icons are named "mac001ffXXXXXXX" where XXXXXXX are a bunch of numbers. I can access the other computer's files by clicking on EITHER the official Mac icons in the sidebar, OR by clicking on the "blue screen of death" icons.
It should be noted that a Windows XP computer is also a part of this network. I currently have only the AFP sharing option selected (I did have both AFP and SMB, but I disabled SMB because Windows sharing is not really needed), but still the old Windows icon is appearing alongside the iMac icon -- both icons applicable to the iMac.
I believe this problem is connected to the file sharing issue I am having. While folders I have shared on the iMac can be seen by the Mac Pro, files on the Mac Pro for which I have specified Read and Write guest access to "Everyone" are not visible on the iMac -- the only way to access these files is to log in as a Registered User. I have tried a whole bunch of different things, but nothing seems to work. I was under the impression that communication between two Macs would be completely problem-free!
So is there something I am missing, or is it a Leopard issue?

Personal File Sharing

I have a small office network setup with 8 macs. I'm currently using personal file sharing within the network. Sometimes I can not tell who is connected to which machine at any given time.
When I go to shut my machine down, I'll get the message "There are X users connected using apple file sharing. Are you sure you want to shut down?"
#1 How can I tell who is connected?
#2 Is there a way that I can force them to disconnect from my machine?

No need to "install" Sharepoints, you just run it once to set the type of logging you want in it's AFS Properties, then you use AFS Monitor to easily check the Logs to see who is or has been doing what.
No need to change Sharing with Sharepoints unless you want to finely tune your sharing.

Problem with "Personal File Sharing"

"Personal File Sharing" does not work in my Powerbook G4 17 inch with 1.67 ghz CPU and with 1 gb ram.
There is long delay, if I turn on the "Sharing" dialogue box.
When it works shortly, I click the "Personal File Sharing" option.
Then there is long delay again, then "Windows Sharing" is automatically selected without any change.
"Personal File Sharing" is always off.
When I click the other options while this short moment, they can be turned on and off.
Only "Personal File Sharing" does not work!
And my Laptop can not be seen in other OS X.
How can I find the reason and how can I solve this problem?
What I can suppose is only the installation of Server Assistent.
Can it be a problem?

This may or may not help you, but doing so has helped numerous other users in other forums here (iChat, Mail, Print&Fax, etc.) that have reported crappy performance problems of one sort or another.
Download the OS 10.4.10 COMBO update for Intel (for ktom) or PPC (for prko).
Close all services and ports in Sys Prefs Sharing. Run Disk Utility and verify your boot drive. Then repair permissions. Reapply the combo update. Repair permissions again. Reopen desired services and ports in Sys Prefs Sharing. Reboot. Post back and let us know if that helped or not.

Personal file sharing, ok to leave on please?

hey guys!
just wanted to check what some other mac users do re personal file sharing!
i have an imac G5 and a macbook (intel core 2 duo) and i turned on file sharing for both systems, firewall is on and it works great!
both the question is, is says other mac users can access my files, when i access them i input a password so others will be asked the same right?
firewall is on stealth mode so this should be safe, right?

Mine is on all the time and, like you I have two machines, so one thing I use it for is to transfer data.
To get into the second machine needs username and password and if you are behind a firewall and a router, there is very low possibility for them to see your Macs. On the same system, perhaps they can be seen, but getting in needs those passwords and usernames.
Make sure your passwords are strong, of course.

Personal File Sharing problem

We networked an iMac, iBook and PowerBook G4 through airport. Worked swimmingly until recently. Now the PowerBook is making difficulties. It recognises both other computers but fails to actually connect to them (just continues 'thinking' eternally while trying to connect). The other two computers don't see the PowerBook but still network well together.
Problem (I think): iMac and iBook in System Preferences> Sharing> Services Personal File Sharing is still selected, but on the PowerBook it was somehow automatically deselected. The PowerBook now refuses to start Personal File Sharing no matter how often I click on it. All other services (Windows Sharing, Personal Web Sharing etc) can still be selected, but that is not much use.
A known problem?

It's system wide then. A reinstall of the OS will probably cure it. You can try an Archive and Install (choosing the "Preserve Users and Network Settings" option) but if the problem presists after that, a full reinstall (after backing up user accounts to another drive) may be necessary.
If you have an external drive, backup your user account Home folders. If you don't have one, backup important documents to CDs/DVDs prior to reinstalling the OS.

Personal file sharing: file copying broken from/to imported account?

I have an iMac G5 with two user accounts A and B ; and a MacBook Pro with two user accounts A' (imported from A with the migration assistant) and C.
Personal file sharing, FTP and SMB are enabled on both machines. The firewall is disabled. Permissions, as well as the Keychain have been repaired.
When I am logged as A' on the MBP, and when I connect to the iMac with the username/password of A, I can't copy files from A' to A : I get the following error message [The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items]. However, a 0-byte file is created on A'. The same problem occurs from A to A'.
This problem drives me crazy because :
- I can read and delete any file in A' from A (and vice-versa). Only copy and modification doesn't work.
- I can copy files from A to C, A' to B, C to A, B to A'.
- FTP sharing between A and A' does work.
Someone got the problem solved by re-creating his account and re-importing all his data, but I absolutely want to avoid that. I'm sure there can be a simpler solution...
It appeared to me that the only reason why AFP copy doesn't work between A and A' is that A' was imported from A. It seems also that a common broken preference/setting is not the source of the problem, since sharing works from/to any other account (and well, re-creating the account couldn't solve the problem as it would re-set the broken settings).
I would like to know which information is used to determine user privileges when copying from one machine to another...
A strange thing I noticed is that both A and A' have the same generateduid (which is thus not "unique") - could it be the source of the problem?
If you have two machines with one account imported from one machine to another, can you check whether Personal file sharing with this account works? I love understanding why stuff doesn't work.

From the MBP, trying to access Account_B on the iMac:

501 is the uid of account_A (on the iMac). (The uid of account_A' is 503).
