Personal File Sharing Won't Start

My computer (G5 Dual Core Intel, 10.4.10) has suddenly stopped allowing connections from other computers. Went into the Sharing preference pane and personal file sharing was unchecked. Checked the box, set there saying "starting..." for a long time, closed the window, went back in and it was off again. Everytime I click on the Sharing preference pane it takes a REALLY long time to open, all other panes open just fine. I have ran Applejack, which repairs permissions and such, still no luck. Any ideas?

No Luck.... Still doesn't work, after dragging those files to the desktop I couldn't even connect to the network or the internet from this computer any longer. The sharing preference pane still hangs (either for a long time or forever) when trying to open it. Also, one of the files you mentioned isn't there and not found anywhere else on my computer. com.apple.internetconnect.plist
Sorry on the G5, old habits die hard I guess.
Thanks,
Eric

  • Personal file sharing won't complete 'starting up' phase

i'm trying to network my Power Mac G5 to my iBook G4...
everything seems fine on my G5: the Sharing preferences went smoothly, and i can access my iBook from it. (they're both connected via ethernet to my DSL router)
but when i try to set the Sharing preferences on my iBook, for both the Personal File Sharing and Personal Web Sharing services, when i click 'on' box they just sit there, grey, in 'Starting Up' mode and never actually turn on.
i ran a Disk Repair Permissions to no avail.
i have no idea what to do next...
    thanks for any help,

    I'd Trash these files...
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist
    /Users/nnnnLibrary/Preferences/com.apple.internetconnect.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
    then get Applejack...

After installing, boot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.

  • Personal File Sharing won't be turned on anymore

Under the Sharing System Preference, the Personal File Sharing will not be turned on anymore. When I select it, "File Sharing staring up . . ." message comes up, but it stays like that forever. Because of this problem, I can not share my files with other computers anymore. Is this due to a corrupted preference file, or something? Please help me.

  • Personal Web Sharing won't start up

I'm sorry if this is duplicated but I when I try to start up my web sharing, it goes grey, says starting but never gets anywhere.
I was tring to install PHP and tried the 5.0 verison as I have the intel mac. I guess that was a big mistake.
When I try to use terminal to launch apache I get the following message.
    AllisonServer:~ allisonserver$ apachectl start
    Processing config directory: /private/etc/httpd/users/*.conf
    Processing config file: /private/etc/httpd/users/+entropy-php.conf
fopen: No such file or directory
httpd: could not open document config file /private/etc/httpd/users/+entropy-php.conf
/usr/sbin/apachectl start: httpd could not be started
In the console utility, when I go to /var/log and then into httpd the window is empty.
In the console log I'm getting this message
    Processing config directory: /private/etc/httpd/users/*.conf
    Processing config file: /private/etc/httpd/users/+entropy-php.conf
fopen: No such file or directory
httpd: could not open document config file /private/etc/httpd/users/+entropy-php.conf
/usr/sbin/apachectl start: httpd could not be started
Can anybody help me clear out the PHP5 if that's my problem.
I would also like to know how to tell if i have apache 1.2 or 2.0?
    Thank you in advance

  • Personal Web Sharing won't start

It will only say "starting" but nothing happens. Is there a known fix for this?
    Thanks

    Hi Eric!
The only thing I can think is turn off your firewall first then turn on the sharing. Then go back and turn your firewall on again. Because if you want this feature enabled you must have this port open in your firewall. There's a chance this is what you're experiencing...

When was the last time you did any of the following?
    Restart your computer?
Repaired Permission & restarted your computer?
Run "Repair Disk" from your install DVD?
Please detail all you have done to resolve your issue.  Need this information so that the users can avoid the "been there, done that" scenario type responses.  This is to avoid repeating the troubleshooting you may have already tried.  Thank you.

  • Cann't start personal file sharing service

open "system preferences->sharing",then start "personal file sharing "service, the status is holding on "file sharing startup" for a long time,I donn't know why, please help me,thanks.

See if dragging this file to the Desktop, (can move back if it doesn't work), then rebooting allows you to set it...

  • Personal File sharing doesn't work

I'm trying to transfer files from my G4 to my G5.
    I've been successful until now.
All of a sudden my G4 will not allow me to enable Personal File Sharing.
I click the "Start now" button, and nothing.
I have also been having start-up and sleep problems as well as mouse cursor disappearing after sleep mode. Could they all be related?

I'm using a Network cable on the G4.
    Airport card on the G5.
    Aftermarket wireless G router.
As I said it worked fine just hours before. Now won't network at all.
I'm using an Apple USB mouse.
G4 will sometimes just freeze after chime and screen will not come up, or comes up very slowly. Mouse will often disappear after waking from sleep mode. Or sometimes it will not wake from sleep. I've removed all peripherals except Apple monitor and mouse.

  • Personal File Sharing problem

We networked an iMac, iBook and PowerBook G4 through airport. Worked swimmingly until recently. Now the PowerBook is making difficulties. It recognises both other computers but fails to actually connect to them (just continues 'thinking' eternally while trying to connect). The other two computers don't see the PowerBook but still network well together.
Problem (I think): iMac and iBook in System Preferences> Sharing> Services Personal File Sharing is still selected, but on the PowerBook it was somehow automatically deselected. The PowerBook now refuses to start Personal File Sharing no matter how often I click on it. All other services (Windows Sharing, Personal Web Sharing etc) can still be selected, but that is not much use.
    A known problem?

It's system wide then. A reinstall of the OS will probably cure it. You can try an Archive and Install (choosing the "Preserve Users and Network Settings" option) but if the problem presists after that, a full reinstall (after backing up user accounts to another drive) may be necessary.
If you have an external drive, backup your user account Home folders. If you don't have one, backup important documents to CDs/DVDs prior to reinstalling the OS.

  • Personal File Sharing fails on network of (2) cascading Linksys routers.

    Topography:
Comcast cable modem attached to (WAN-port) Linksys BEFSR41 (4-port).
    Linksys WRT54G (WAN-port) attached to Linksys BEFSR41 (4-port).
    Linksys BEFSR41 starting @ is 192.168.1.1.
    Linksys WRT54G starting @ is 192.168.2.1.
All systems attached to either the ethernet ports of the BEFSR41,
the ethernet ports of the WRT54G, or Wi-Fi of the WRT54G connect
    to the Internet flawlessly.
    Problem:
Using Personal File Sharing (Connect to Server…) all Apple systems
(all MacOS X v10.4.7) only see other systems attached to the router
that they are attached to & vice versa, i.e. systems attached to BEFSR41
can not see systems attached to WRT54G & vice versa.
    Any ideas?

I think you could get around this by changing the subnet mask to 255.255.254.0, (maybe 255.255.0.0), but not sure if it would open Security problems for you.
With the subnet mask set to 255.255.255.0, you can only see other computers in the range where only the last number is different... if it was set to 0.0.0.0.0, then theoretically you could connect to any Computer in the world, havent tried it though!:-)
Other ways exist of one router handing out all the IPs, but that's for later.

  • Personal file sharing Crahing

I am using 3 G5 1.8GHz having 10.4.6. I observed that personal file sharing service is crashing again and again on all the 3 mahines. If i start the service manually it runs for a moment and then automatically stopped again. any ideas why this is happening??

Thank you. I started to go through the hints but I am not through till now. I suppose I shall have to delete the hard disc and install the whole system new. But the time to do all the work will be not earlier than in two weeks.

  • Personal File Sharing can't be activated

    Hi all,
Just got a Macbook and try to connect with a G4 MDD together with a wireless router. I found that the personal file sharing setting in preference in G4 can't be activated. It stays "starting up" status forever. However Bonjour is fine: my Macbook can share the iTune library, printer sharing is fine, windows sharing is fine too. And the G4 can share Macbook's folders. Have tried reset PRAM, reset PMU, runs Disk Utilities but still no use. Any idea?

Before you go the "archive and (re)install" route, try just reapplying the OS 10.4.11 combo update for PPC and see if that fixes you up. Just as the knowledge base article recommends, run Disk Utility first to verify disk (to make sure it is not in need of repair before you start), then run repair permissions. Then, after done with either the "archive and install" or the "combo update", rerun repair permissions again.

  • Personal File Sharing on my eMac turns off by itself

I have three computers in my home office environment-- a eMac using Tiger fully updated--in fact it just came back from Apple Care doctors due to hard drive and memory issues-- (we think a power surge into my house caused it)--I also have a iBook-- four years old--running Tiger fully updated, but slow--- then I just got a MacBook running Leopard---- anyway I can get my laptops to network and share files, and I can get my eMac to connect to the laptops for file sharing, etc--- however, when I try to link the laptops to the eMac it hooks up for less than a minute, then I lose the connection--- it indicates issues with the connection, and on the MacBook yo use the link is gone. I go into the preferences in the eMac and see that the Personal File Sharing check box is no longer checked. I have tried resetting it, locking the preferences, etc. but I cannot get it to stay connected-- it is a minor issue, but one I would like to resolve--- thanks

Well, I have tried everything that you have indicated, including re-starting the eMac from the Tiger installer DVD and going to the Disc Utility and repairing the disc (nothing wrong) and repairing permissions-- lots needed corrections-- anyway, I still get the issue--- when I try to locate the eMac on the home netwrok, it looks like it hooks up for a second or so then I get a yellow triangle with an explanation mark in it saying the network is interrupted--and when I go into the system preferences the Personal File Sharing button is unchecked--- weird !!!
Ok, here are a couple of other interesting items-- when I go to the Go menu item and scroll down to the Network command, it will open a box for more than a split second the first time-- then not at all after that.
Secondly, when I do try to access the eMac, I do not ever get the little Connect to Server box asking for the short name and password to enter (??)-- also weird.
Any other suggestions--- this eMac was recently totally re-built-- new hard drive, new memory and new logic board-- (Seems I had a serious power surge in my office and it fried everything) -- I even had to re-install my printer and scanner software-- !!! Thanks for any suggestions.

  • Personal File sharing is on but not working

This problem has been plaguing me for some months. When I try to access the problem computer on the network it will not show up until I turn off Personal File Sharing and then turn it back on. Then all works fine for several days until it doesn't work, and then I repeat the process (turn PFS off and then back on again) to make it work. I can't make an association with any third party programs that might be contributing to the problem.
I thought that the problem might go away with the purchase of a new iMac (10.4.10) and initialized with Migration Manager. Apparently, I imported the problem.
In the past I've tried restart with opt-cmd-P-R which works for awhile and then the process start over again. I've also tried dragged /Library/Preferences/com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist to the trash and restarted.
Anybody have any ideas on how to solve this one? Is there a log file that might show when PFS is tampered with?
    Thanks in advance.

At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
Also, if you trash those files again, and it re-occures again, I'd suspect RAM maybe.

  • Personal File Sharing and Kernel Panic?

I used Personal File Sharing between my MacBook 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and my iMac G5 both with Mac OS 10.4.9 and within the same AirPort Extreme net. Now both computers no longer find the other server after I unplugged all computers and the AirPort basic station during a thunderstorm. The program MacSysInfo which I installed today found the following kernel panic. It seems to me that the time of the kernel panic is the time from which Persoanl File Sharing is no longer working. The connection to the printer within the same net still works for both computers. What can I do to solve the problem?
