Personal hotspot data overages?

We live in a rural area and connect to the internet using a personal hotspot.  We do not play games, stream videos/movies or anything like that.  Most of the time we are just browsing the internet and uploading photos every so often on FB to share with family and friends.  My data usage has spiked from 10 to over 20GB a month!  I have researched this and contacted Verizon tech support and no one can give me an explanation.  I have all the settings on my phone set to use the least amount of data possible and this is STILL a problem.  I am so disappointed with Verizon and the customer service I have received.  When I asked what/where most of my data was be used my response was something about how a bank could tell me where my money was being spent but Verizon was not able to tell me where my data was being spent.  We are currently shopping around for another cell phone provider but I would like to know if anyone else has had this same problem. I refuse to pay $300 for a service that is not that great to begin with.

    Hi 3applesnmyi,
We would never want to see you leave! I know how important it is to be able to understand your data usage charges. I see that mosst of your activitees involve uploading and downloading photos, click here to see how much data that really uses on a device http://vz.to/1cRXvFh . Do you have access to Wi-fi? How many devices are connected to or have access to the Hotspot?
Thanks,

  • Appletv personal hotspot data usage

I have an iPhone 5 under family share 10GB and personal hotspot. what I want to know is if I connect my iPad and AppleTV to my personal hotspot to play movies that are already downloaded to my iPad to my AppleTV, will it use a lot of my data?

    Yes.

  • HT204023 I was able to activate and use my personal hotspot with my iPad4 yesterday but today it says I have to contact my carrier!  I did make the $50 payment today as my data was used up this morning, could that be the issue?  How long does it take to w

So yesterday was the first time I used my iPad's personal hotspot, and it was great.  Just click on it and typed in the password on my laptop.  This morning while working out my iPad's data plan ran out so I paid another $50 and was good to go.  However when I tried the personal hotspot, I get a message to contact my carrier.  What is up with that?

Contact your carrier and ask them.

  • Unlimited Data Plan and Personal Hotspot possible?

Hello all, I have been a customer with AT&T for over 10 years now and was pretty disappointed with the conversation I just had with one of their customer service representatives. Since I first purchased an iPhone I have had the unlimited data plan for $30 that was required for purchase at the time. I recognize that since they've done away with unlimited data as an option, I have not gone over the 2GB $25 plan, but I still have opted to pay the extra for unlimited usage in case the day should come that I needed it.  Today I called the customer service line to inquire about why I was not able to set up a personal hotspot (when I try, my phone tells me to contact AT&T). I was told that I would need to "upgrade" (don't get stuck on the terms) to a 2GB ($25) or 5GB ($50) monthly option in order to use this feature. Something about this seems off to me since I have been carrying forward a plan that AT&T required me to have in the first place, but now it disqualifies me from a feature of the phone - not due to capabilities, mind you. Does anyone know if there is the ability to combine these two features? Really frustrated with AT&T for making it (seem hopefully) an impossibility. Appreciated.

My siblings have Sprint and love it, they also offer unlimited everything for cheaper than ATT, plus an insurance plan for 7 bux a month that offers water damage coverage!! Once I can afford to pay the cancellation or my contract is finally up, ATT will not get another dime out of me, my ten year loyalty apparently is not enough, I have to fight to get some recognition for this loyalty, so its time to move on. I am with you on that. I am so insulted to have paid for two phones for 10 years and I cant share my unlimited data with my dam tablet (which they want me to pay 25-50 dollars just to give it internet access as another phone line so that will also need the 9.99 for the added line too I presume) Its sick and disapppointing. Is there anything ATT offers that doesnt require the customer to be inconvenienced and work twice as hard to get what they need (or THINK they already pay for - as misrepresentation is another special here)? I even had u-verse, and let it be known there was NEVER a month that the bill was the same, there were always charged that needed to be disputed and it was always getting more and more expensive and not a single Rep could explain it to me where it made sense.  ATT get your stuff in line. With you not offering unlimited anymore and being one of the more expensive plans I think your loyal customers should be more of a priority, as the new ones will be gone as fast as they come when someone else offers a cheaper plan. We have stuck with you paying $80+ a month for a single line in some cases even when $50- unlimited everything plans are out there, and thats not enough for you to make a few exceptions? I would pay another 10/mo to tether my UNLIMITED plan, but like heck I am going to a limited data plan just to tether so you can try and make more money off me, I PAY YOU ENOUGH!

  • Data Overage 4G LTE 890L Hotspot and low bars

I have been experiencing Data Overage on my 890L but have not changed the way I have been using my computer. I am also only pulling 2 bars now on 4G. I have talked to Verizon and they are telling me that there is nothing wrong on Verizons end and that I am just using the data. I have seen where some people have changed the Sims card and it has helped but Verizon have told me that this would not solve any of my problems. Any suggestions. I am getting nowhere with Verizon. Thanks Richard

YES, it can be hacked! Rather than removing the battery and changing Max Connections, simply strengthen wireless security.
    1) Power down and remove the SIM card
    2) Power up, reset the device and wait a minute or two
    3) Power down, reinstall the SIM card, and power up the device
    4) Login to the Device’s user interface: example http://192.168.1.1 YMMV
    5) Change the default SSID to something that does not identify you or the device
    6) Change the default PSK to one with high entropy
PSK is Pre-Shared Key (the correct name for what Verizon calls Wi-Fi password)
Low entropy = Less than 32 characters
High entropy = 32 to 63 random printable characters
    Select WPA2-PSK Personal AES
Do NOT select WPA/WPA2 Mixed mode
    Avoid MAC filtering
    Do broadcast the SSID
You can get a high entropy 63 random printable character PSK from https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm Copy and Paste the key to a text file and move the key between computers with a USB stick. Copy and Paste it to the wireless applet when prompted. For more generalized information, Google how do I secure my wireless network.

I have iPhone 4 and I update it to iOS 7 and when I try to start the personal hotspot it crashed and for sometime my cellular data was also not working then allot a sudden the personal hotspot icon disappeared from my settings.
Has anyone faced a problem like this!!!

No. If you go Settings App > General > Reset > "Erase All Content and Settings", you will have the same iOS that was on the iPhone when you tapped the Erase button. If you believe your iPhone is Jailbroken, then this will not work. If you use iTunes on computer, this will put iPhone to current iOS which is iOS 7.0.2

dianneb, great question and thanks for the help Weth. The good news is if you're on More Everything the mobile hotspot would be apart of your plan just as Weth mentioned. What you just want to keep in mind is that the usage from the tablet while connected to the hotspot would take from your current plan allowance. Hope this helps!

When I on my cellular data for personal hotspot so it just loads and nothing happens plz help me so I can use personal hotspot on my iphone 4 ios7.1.1

Not all cellular carrier plans support personal hotspot. If that isn't the issue, there may be something else in the following that will help: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2756

Sorry but that makes no sense in English. Only your mobile phone company (i.e. "carrier") can enable the Personal Hotspot feature.

  • Can I use my home WiFi's data while using Personal Hotspot

at the moment I'm using my personal hotspot at home, as I have no ethernet cord to run from my router to PC
Is there someway that I can connect my phone to WiFi and then use that through my computer? or is the only way to use my own data that comes with my phone?
This would be a great help.
    Thanks!

It should be using your data. The hotspot connection is via 3G and is supported by your carrier. It can use wifi to connect to your computer, but it cannot use the wifi to provide the data.
How can you connect your computer to wifi anyway. You talk about the inability to connect your computer to the router, but then you want to connect the comptuer to wifi from your router, but still want to use the Personal Hotspot. This does not make any sense. Does the router have the ability to do wifi? If so, you don't need the hotspot, just connect the PC to the router via wifi.

  • Rogers is saying that IOS4 won't allow use of the personal hotspot with a plan of less than 1GB data.  I say it's a policy of theirs, not an iOS restriction.  Anyone know the truth?

I call BS but the tech guy was insistent that the iPhone can detect what plan I have and won't enable the feature and there's nothing they can do about it, short of selling me a larger data plan...

Actually it does.  It's wrong to lie to a customer.  By blaming Apple, they shift the blame and make it seem like there is nothing they can do about it.  If they admitted it was their policy, I could complain and try to get it changed or I could move to another carrier.
If a person killed someone and blamed it on a heart attack, the person is stil dead, does it matter? Either way they're dead, right...  (extreme, I know, but illustrating a point)
    Wow.
It is certainly Rogers policy and is not unusual at all among carriers.
Seems like a non-issue to me, but apparently being "lied to" ( perhaps the employee was simply mistaken, it happens) is a major deal to you.

  • HT204023 There is no access to personal hotspot in the general setting / cellular data on my iPad mini?

There is no access to personal hotspot in the general > setting / cellular data on my iPad mini?

Verify that your carrier supports Personal Hotspot for your device and that you have Personal Hotspot enabled on your cellular plan:

  • Does personal hotspot use extra data

    Hello.
Does using Personal Hotspot and connecting with my laptop to search the internet use any more data than just searching the web on my iPhone?
    Thanks

    Clarification.
I setup the hotspot on my iphone, which has both cellular and WiFi network access.
My iPhone, I know will use WiFi for it's internet connections.
A device connects to my iPhone, using the hotspot.\
If you have other wifi available, why is your hotspot on and why are you using it?
I would hope that my iPhone would use the least expensive network, ie, WiFi,
    It won't.
The hotspot is for connecting devices using wifi or blutooth to the internet using yoru wifi cell data.

  • HT204023 If my iphone is connected to the internet via wifi will it use my cellular data if I use it as a personal hotspot or will it use the wifi's internet???

If my iphone is connected to the internet via wifi will it use my cellular data if I use it as a personal hotspot or will it use the wifi's internet???
The wireless on my laptop brokebut I can still connect to my phone when I plug it in. My iphone is connected to the wifi but is this being transfered onto the laptop or is it using up my data???

Personal hotspot shares your cellular connection with other devices via cable, bluetooth or WiFi. If you turn on the hotspot, the phone will be disconnected from the WiFi network you are on and share access to the cellular connection. That's what it's for. It's using your data plan if that's what you're trying to do.
