Personal Hotspot GPS Location Services ?

So I've set up a Personal Hotspot on my iPhone 4 for my new wifi iPad. The wifi iPad does not have it's own gps receiver. From my understanding the wifi iPad gets it's approximate location by looking up from a database of wifi locations that it is currently receiveing. I guess this wifi database is assmebled by Apple or Google or some such. I'm assuming that since the Personal Hotspot is mobile that there is no database location for the iPad to see in this case. But, the iPhone has it's true GPS location updated realtime.
1. So does the iPhone Personal Hotspot somehow communicate it's GPS location to the iPad realtime for the Location Services of the iPad? If not - then why not?
2. Is this something Apple can add in a future OS update?
3. Or, can an App be developed for this?
It would be a shame to have the Personal Hotspot GPS location known realtime by the phone but not communicated to the iPad or other devices.

I have sense read that some third party portable hotspot devices do send gps data.
Out of curiosity, my (admittedly quick and cursory) Google searching couldn't find such claims about either the iPhone or other portable hotspots. Do you have any links?
Edit: My bad. I just didn't know what to search for.
I see things like this that support what you're saying:

  • GPS Location Services Not Working

I'm in Las Vegas and up until yesterday at Noon my GPS services were working fine. Found my location with the little pulsing blue dot. Loopt worked fine, GPS life was great.
Since then GPS is now working, location finder on maps just spins in the bottom left hand corner. In loopt the location just spins also.
I've turned the 3G iphone off and on 4 times. Turned Location Services ON/OFF just as many.
Battery life isn't great but I'll buy all the car and extra chargers I need to keep it alive. I just want the features to work.
Anyone else having this GPS issue?

Ok.. didn't need the 3 finger solute. I turned on Airplane Mode and left it there for 5min.
Once I turned Airplane Mode off and services came back I went back to maps and got the "Will you allow Maps to see your location... blah blah".
Now GPS services, both maps and loopt, working again. Maybe Airplane Mode OFF/ON reset/reconnected services? No idea, but I'm trackable again.
    Thanks for the quick replies.

  • IPhone 4s GPS/location services not working correctly in Maps

I have had an iPhone since the original, so I am not new to the way Maps works. Maps has been useless on my new 4s. It keeps pulling up locations from other states, or telling me I am at a location when I am 5-10 miles away. For example, I searched for Fireshouse subs ( I am in Florida) it found one match: Denny's in California?!? I searched for an autozone that I was a mile from and pulled one in Nebraska. Also, I can calulate a route, tells me I am 30 miles away, drive a mile, change start from Current Location, and then I am 10 miles away.... Is there a way to calibrate my GPS? This is very frustrating! thanks
(is iPhone 4S really not a product in the drop down selection Apple?)

  • Does having WiFi on improve GPS location services even when not connected to it?

I know it'd use more battery juice but it'd be worth it to me if it helps. I've tried different setting combinations and can't tell for sure which ones were best. I use a walk/run app that gives you a "breadcrumb" trail overlay on a google map. It's fairly accurate but sometimes it has me walking through buildings and shows other inconstancies. So anyway, does anyone know if leaving WiFi on when only connected to 3G improve the GPS lock?
    Thanks

Thanks for the responses. Reading the article you linked, modular747, confirmed what I was thinking might be true. I often read how accurate the iPhones GPS is but I have no frame of reference, it's the only GPS device I've ever used. Does everyone have it wander around a bit or is it always "dead on"? I have a 4S and have read it uses the Russian GLOSNOSS satellite system as well as the USA's GPS. But still, it wanders. This is normal? I'd like to make sure I've not got a defect in it. I especially notice it when using the tracking apps (Walkmeter and Nike Plus) I described above.

  • I have problem in location service

MY ipad mini have problem it cannot determinate  my location although another ipad beside me can determinate easily
    i rest all location services

What model is your iPad? WiFi+Cell or WiFi-only?
If it is WiFi-Only, beware the model does not have a GPS chip and can only determine its location by consulting in a database maintained by Apple the location of the WiFi hotspot it is connecting to. If the hotspot is not registered or if there is no WiFi service, the device is essentially lost and unable to determine where it is.
The WiFi+Cell models come with a localization chip that reads both US GPS and Russian GLONASS signals so it can always find where it is, PROVIDED the geographical area is allowed to sync. The US military, which operate their GPS infrastructure, are known to disable GPS location services in conflict zones so the "enemies" can't benefit. If the Russians do likewise, we don't know.

  • Location Service always on

I did the update to iOS 7.1 last night and Location Services won't turn off unless I shut it down completely.  It used to be that if an app was using location services, I would force close the app and GPS/Location Services would turn off.  Now, even if I force close ALL apps, Location Services continues to run.  I don't want to have to go to Services > Privacy > Location Services and turn it on every time.  That's ridiculous and makes apps using Location Services not worth using.
Does anyone know if there's a way to get back to the way it was prior to the update or if Apple is going to fix this?
    Thanks!

Mine was yahoo weather as well. I just deleted the app. I have so many other weather apps.  But same here you guys. I close every app from running in the background and the location icon still comes on (Draining battery life)... I think its part of this updated iBeacon and what they call a geofence?
    I dont like it.

  • IPod Touch 5th Generation Location Services arrow stays on

My iPod Touch 5th Gen on ios 6.1.3 wont turn the gps location services arrow off. i always leaves location services on, but last week i noticed it was still on after i went to the notification center to post to facebook. when i turn the service off it goes away, but i likle to leave it on. I also, dont want to have to do any type of restore if possible. I have an imessage, facetime, and bluetooth debugging option in system that i installed, but that was a month before this started happening.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • No location services on iPod 4g even w/ WiFi

My iPod touch 4g, brand new, cannot determine location even when located to our home's WiFi. I checked in settings to make sure location services is activated, which it is. The applications that are requesting to determine location are all approved for pulling location.
    Any ideas?

I agree with all of the comments, and frustration, regarding having NO GPS with the wi-fi ONLY iPad2.  I did what I thought was a good deal of research on the iPad2 before I purchased it.  Compared it with competitors, waited for key functions to be added from the original iPad, and factored in what storage size as well as where and how I planned to use it.  NOWHERE did I EVER see that no location services are found in the iPad2, and that every app, function or website that uses GPS/Location Services will not operate.
    What a TREMENDOUS let down!
Google Maps, Google Earth, searching for movies, restaurants, site-seeing, and just about everything else you'd want a mobile computer for WON'T WORK.  In order to use those BASIC functions, you MUST get a 3G version, with its associated data plan.
I am annoyed that in all of the advertisements and even independent articles/reviews, this was not mentioned with any clarity.
This situation is in DESPERATE need of a fix or work-around that does NOT include buying a new iPad.
A good start would be a new update that allows you to at least specify an address or zip code to set as your home station and all location services use that point to establish a current (or beginning) location for apps.

  • Personal Hotspot issues on iPhone 6 plus

I have the Sprint "unlimited everything family plan". I do not have the option for Personal Hotspot for my service. My iPhone 6 plus has a link to set up a "Personal Hotspot" on my phone "only" when I'm away from Wi-FI or LTE for a short while. 1: I don't want that service. 2: When it appears, it renders my iPhone useless and virtually inoperable, especially won't make or receive calls. 3: I have to keep resetting my phone to make it go away. Sprint Store ***** tried to tell me he fixed it, when in actuality, he just reset my phone settings for the network too and stated, "there, no more problem". I did a complete restore of the iPhone hoping the problem would go away, unfortunately the "Personal Hotspot" link popped up again. I might also state, that it doesn't appear on my phone under "Settings" "Cellular". It just pops up out of the blue when I'm away for Wi-Fi or LTE? I can't just access the link either, as I don't have that service, but when it does pop up to set up a Personal Hotspot, it just keeps searching and searching for a Hotspot that doesn't exist. Then I have to reset again. I'll be taking it to the Sprint store tomorrow for a replacement or go back to an Android phone again.

Okay, so I have the screen shots of it happening now. When this happens and I click that popup, "Call", "Go to Website", "Cancel" nothing happens. I have to completely reset my network settings and I'm also unable to make phone calls. Messaging does work in this status. A

  • My location services are frozen. Can I use my personal hotspot to backup and restore my phone?

My iPhone 4S was upgraded from the 6.1.2 to 6.1.3 and I expierenced a major malfunction. Immeadily after the upgrade my daughter installed a 4 shared app then she went on line and downloaded AppCaster. The AppCaster crashed then my google latitude app crashed. Now my location services are frozen. Is there any way I can back up and restore my iPhone using my personal hotspot. I can't get to a public hotspot to use my icloud backup?

one cant use the personal hotspot feature to restore the device coz the phone will d/connect as soon the restoration process is underway. you will need a PC/laptop t ocomplete this process,in case you dont then ,maybe go to the apple store and request them to restore it for you from icloud

  • IPhone 6 location services/gps not working

Anyone else have an issue with iPhone 6 location services/gps not working? I have had it happen to me twice where it stopped working for good 7 or 8 hours and then all of sudden it starts working again. For example, directions don't work, every time I open Apple Maps it will say "Cannot determine location", then when I press the location icon on the bottom left, it will try to search again and have an approximate location but not exact, where as the iPad that I have right next to it is able to pin point the exact location. Sometimes the location circle is pulsing blue sometimes its gray. If I am driving and have tracking on it won't track, and so on.  I have tried to setup the phone as new without restoring the backup, when it stopped working with no luck, it still didn't work. I went and restore it back from backup and few hours later it started to work again. This has happened twice now since I got the phone last Friday.

Check your "Privacy" settings on your iPhone see what apps are using your location.

  • After the most recent update, I can no longer access stand alone GPS services. What's up with that? I am now forced to use google location services which use up some of my data allotment.

ddmathias, I want to make sure all services are working correctly on your phone. What GPS services were you using before the update happened? What kind of issues are you having with the services? Do you get any kind of errors? Please keep us posted.

  • HT2712 Is it possible to set up network locations in such a way that other preferences also get set?  Specifically, I usually have my Software Updates set to download in the background, but when I am using my iPhone's Personal Hotspot I'd like to disable

Or indeed is some other way possible, such as using an Applescript to detect when I am using my personal hotspot on my (limited data package!) 3g iPhone (via wi-fi or USB etc) and then switch off the automatic downloads until I revert back to my regular connection?
Apologies -seem to have posted this in the worng forum.

Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...

But Software Update won't be an available setting choice.
But I'd turn off automatic Updates anyway, & just check once a week or once a month to see what's available.

That is what Activation Lock of iOS 7 does
In addition, it renders the iPhone totally useless to anyone who doesn't know your Apple ID and password.
