Personal Hotspot stops working periodically

I am using the 3rd Generation Verizon iPad and my area has LTE coverage.
Status Indicators
4 Bars of Verizon LTE Coverage
1 Connection to iPad for Personal Hotspot
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Turn on Personal Hotspot
2. Use a MacBook Pro (or WiFi enabled device) to make a connection
3. Stream netflix, play games or surf the web. After a period of time, the laptop will stop working.
4. Verify iPad cellular connectivity and attempt to browse web using MobileSafari (this always works). It is important to note that all Internet apps on the iPad have connectivity to the Internet (Netflix, Hulu, Games, Mail, Safari, iTunes, etc)
5. Go back to laptop and attempt to load a page, it will time out. The laptop shows that I have a valid IP but unable to connect.
6. Clear cookies, history and cache and attempt #5. This will also fail to load
7. Turn off Personal Hotspot
8. Turn off Cellular Data and wait 15 seconds then turn back on.
9. Turn Personal Hotspot on and attempt #5. This will work sometimes, if it doesn't work then goto 10
10. Turn on airplane mode and attempt step 5 after turning Personal Hotspot on. This will work sometimes, if it doesn't then go to step 11.
11. Reboot iPad
12. Attempt Step 5 after turning Personal Hotspot on. This will work.
I've also tried rebooting the laptop and shutting Airport off then back on. Both methods have the same result. I connected my iPod Touch to the iPad Personal Hotspot and I can't connect with the iPod Touch either (until I perform steps 7 to 12 above).
Anyway I can troubleshoot this issue?

do you also have a Verizon iPad? Are you on LTE?
I upgraded to iOS 6.0 to see if the issue resolved and it didn't.
using tether.com works with no issue so it's only MHS with the issue

  • Personal hotspot stopped working on iphone 6, ios 8

My personal hotspot on AT&T shows up and shows it turns on, but it's not really there.  It was working and then stopped for no reason.  All the buttons look ok, but there's no hotspot now.

Try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again. You will not lose any data by resetting, but it can cure some glitches.
If still no luck, check if there are any carrier updates:
    iOS: Updating your carrier settings
If this does not help, resetting the network settings in Settings/General/Reset would be the next step.

Iphone 4 personal Hotspot not working after update to IOS 7.1 India BSNL cellular

BSNL is not a supported carrier. Personal Hotspot requires carrier support and provisioning of the account to enable it. iOS 7.1 disabled the ability to manually configure Personal Hotspot on unsupported carriers.

  • I am having problems with my optical corded mouse that came with my iMac (it's about 2 years old) It stops working periodically, and I can't figure out how to fix it; doesn't look like I can open it to clean it, or anything like that.

My corded optical mouse (model A 1152),which came with my desktop  iMac, stops working periodically.  The little tracball may work scrolling down a page, but not up, sometimes, and I have yet to figure out how to fix it, or why it happens at all.  Is there someone who has had that problem, and what did you do?

    Hello:
Turn the mouse upside down and run it (vigorously) over a piece of paper.  Better yet, run it over a microfiber cloth.

Personal hotspot not working after upgrading to ios7

I was having this problem (iphone 5 wouldn't work as hotspot for my PC laptop) and had tried everything suggested on these message boards, so I finally went to the Apple Genius Bar and they fixed it for me.  Here's what they did:
    1) Turned the Hotspot off on my iphone
    2) Went to the Control Panel on my laptop to "Network and Internet" > "Network and Sharing Center" > "Manage Wireless Networks" (on the left navigation panel) and deleted my iphone from the list of WiFi connections I've attempted.
    3) Flipped the manual WiFi switch on my laptop to Off and then back On again (to reset it)
    4) Turned the Hotspot on my iphone back on
After that, when I tried to connect, it worked.  Hope this works for someone else.

  • Personal hotspot not working in windows after hiberation

At times after I recover my PC from hiberation, personal hotspot for my PC to surf web thru my iphone will no longer function. But charging and sync with iTunes will still be functioning. The only way to get personal hotspot to work again is to reboot my PC. This is really frustrating as Windows takes a long time to reboot.
Thus, may I know what is or are the service(s) required by the personal hotspot to work? I can simply restart the service instead of rebooting windows instead.
    Thanks,
    Boon Hong.

same case for my iphone 4 GSM (Hong Kong), my personal hotspot works at ios 7.0.4 but fails at 7.1 as APN cannot be set as described above. Hope Apple Support can help. My Carrier is PCCW-HKT (Hong Kong), which is not a registered carrier

  • Couldn't get personal hotspot to work

I tried the personal hotspot tonight for the first time (it is supported on my carrier - AU in Japan) but I couldn't get it to work.
The restaurant I was in had wifi that my iPhone automatically connected to. I think that was one issue. For the personal hotspot to work, doe the iPhone need to be connected to the Internet over LTE or 3G?
My personal computer could not connect to that same restaurant wifi because it was a member's only wifi for AU cell phone users.
If I turned off wifi to force my iPhone to be connected via LTE but then I got a message saying wifi needed to be turned on to use the personal hotspot feature.
So I turned wifi on again, but my iPhone's wifi did not appear in the personal computer's list of networks to connect to.
Anyway... how would one get this to work? I think I wanted my iPhone connected via LTE, wifi on but NOT connecting to that AU wifi. Is that right? I didn't see how to get the iPhone to NOT connect to the wifi if wifi was on.
    Thanks,
    doug

The problem was that the network settings needed to be reset. After that it worked properly which is like this:
When I entered the restaurant (or at home) the iPhone 5 connected to the known wifi network. That's fine.
When I turn on personal hotspot, the wifi mark disappears and you see the carrier name and connectivity in its place. In my case it said "KDDI LTE".
At this time the wifi network name appears just fine in the personal computer's list of hotspots and you can select it, enter the password and connect.
When you turn off the hotspot, if you were connected to wifi then the wifi mark re-appears.
Anyway, I just tried it from home. I did a speedtest  on my iMac tethered by wifi to my iPhone 5's personal hotspot. Not too bad - download 7.23 Mbps and upload 6.70 Mbps.

  • Personal hotspot not working ios8.2

    HI
    in response to a suggestion here to cure another issue (constant "Cannot download Item" messages), I recently reset the Network Settings on my iPhone 4S. Since then I have been unable to get the personal hotspot to work reliably. My carrier (3) was helpful until they ran out of ideas. The situation now is that my iPad does not 'see' either my phones wifi or Bluetooth signals. Things that have worked in the past but don't work now include;
    1. Hard resets on iPad and iPhone.
    2. Resetting network settings on both.
    3. Renaming the iPhone & ipad.
    4. Changing the wifi password.
The iPhone and iPad (6) are both able to connect to Bluetooth devices, and to wifi, so it doesn't appear to be a hardware issue. Both are running 8.2. I don't have a Mac or iTunes. Any ideas?

Do you have any problems connecting with the 4S itself? That is, does the hardware operate normally? The 4S has a history of network problems as evidenced by posts on this forum. Turn off the hotspot and test the phone itself regarding connecting to wi-fi and data.

  • Personal Hotspot not working with my MacBook Air

    Hi Community
So I have an iPhone 6 and a MacBook Air (Mid2013), who both meet the requirements for the new personal Hotspot in iOS8.
I connected the 2 devices and it worked for some time. I could activate the personal hotspot without even touching the phone. I was very happy, but suddenly it stopped working, although I didn't install a new update on any of the two devices (both are still up to date). At some point, I had to turn the hotspot on manually to get it working, but now, the only way to connect to my hotspot, is to start diagnostics and connect trough that window.
The bluetooth connection works without a problem& my iPhone hotspot works perfectly with my iPad 3.
I tried everything, someone wrote on a website that the iCloud might me the problem, so I disconnected both devices from iCloud and reconnected afterwards. It worked exactly once after that. Then, my MacBook kept saying that the personal hotspot could not be activated (even if I activated the hotspot manually).
Thanks for every kind of help, I'm super frustrated

  • Personal Hotspot Stopped Connecting

    Hello --
(My apologies ... this was also posted in the Hardware forum before I realized this was the appropriate place.)
    Hope you can help.
I have an iPhone4.  Been using the personal hotspot off and on for the past three weeks.  No problems.  Used it today then went to use it again tonight and it will not connect.  Shows in my Mac Airport as an optional connection but when I click on (just as I have been doing all along), it now asks for a password.  I had to do this when I first connected but, after that, stopped asking for it.  Nonetheless, I did type it in this time and that did not work.  Keeps timing out.  I tried changing the password -- that didn't work either.  No updates have been done.
I've restarted the computer, turned off the hotspot and then back on, etc.  I do have a MiFi and I alternate between using these two for internet connection.  As I said, it is only tonight that it just stopped connecting.  It does show as available and, in the past, I could just flip between the two options.
    Ideas?  Suggestions?
    Thanks so much.
    ~linda

It did not solve the problem. As I mentioned before, it suddenly stopped connecting with my computer or iPad. I wonder if this could have been caused by one of those external batteries that I installed on my cellphone. Have you had any reports on external batteries damaging this function?. It works sometimes, but not all the time.

  • Personal Hotspot not working between iPad Mini and iPhone 6 Plus

The personal hotspot function between my iPad Mini and iPhone 5C worked perfectly.
I am now using an iPhone 6 Plus with the same iPad Mini and cannot establish a connection at all.
Bluetooth and Wifi are enabled on both devices and the iPad says it has found my phone, displays the signal strength, 4G, battery remaining and 2 linked circles.
When I choose that hotspot it tries to connect then just keeps saying "Remote Hotspot Failure. Unable to start Personal Hotspot. Stuart's iPhone 6Plus"
    Please help!

  • IOS 5.0.1 Personal Hotspot not working

I've been relying on my personal hotspot for the last couple of weeks as I'm away from home. Today after the iOS 5.0.1 over the air update on my iPhone 4s the personal hotspot doesn't work anymore and neither does tethered internet sharing. Now I can't share my internet to my win7 pc or my ipad 2. This is really quite annoying, any one face similar issues?

Go into General -> Settings -> Reset (2nd to last option) -> Reset Network Settings (3rd option)
Worked for me :) GL :)

  • Cannot get personal hotspot to work

I get this message (see image) when i try to connect to my personal hotspot.
Anyone knows what could be the problem?
I tried on an older mac and tried to connect it through regular hotspot, which worked fine, but my laptop only shows the hotspot as a personal hotspot and not as a regular wifi connection so its not even possible to try it that way.

    Hi martin131086,
If you are having an issue with one computer being unable to connect to your iPhone's Personal Hotspot, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -

  • MacBook Pro connection timeout message for personal hotspot but works on iPad. Any suggestions?, MacBook Pro connection timeout message for personal hotspot but works on iPad. Any suggestions?

I am having issues with my personal hotspot. I can connect an iPAD to it but the MacBook Pro gives a connection timeout error. Sometimes it asks for a password but when I type in the correct one it doesn't recognise it. Any suggestions? My software is up to date and I have deleted the password in key chain but this doesn't seem to help. I am a bit technically challenged so simple language please. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    Fixed!
Two things together have restored connectivity.
    1.  I changed the name under Settings > General > About > Name from My Name's iPad to iPad of My Name.  I read somewhere that iOS 7.0.1 or 7.0.2 (I forget which) sometimes had issues with apostrophes here.  Easy enough to test.
    2.  I then reset (again) the APN settings under Settings > Cellular Data > APN Settings > Personal Hotspot and reentered our provider's info (APN, Username, Password) there.
I don't know WHY it worked, but the personal hotspot is now happily sharing (again) internet connectivity with my MacBook Pro.
