Personal music device recommendations.

I am looking to pick up an mp3 player or some similar device. I have heard people have trouble with ipods, and them not working smashingly with linux.
What do other Archers use? Any recommendations?
I would prefer something that uses an open format like mp3 or ogg, so I can easily move files from box to box without having to deal with shit drm and such.
A small form factor and fairly long batter life would be good too.
Many thanks.

aac i think. I know that format, but I didn't know ipods supported mp3 easily, or well..good to know. if anyone has info about how well ipods work, or info about getting them to work, with linux, that would be appreciated too..
and any other players out there.
I have an ipod (4G).  I also provide the gtkpod package in the community repo.  I can say they work beautifully.
Under linux, it's really easy to mess with: I setup mine on windows (you can buy this as a default), which mean's it's a vfat drive.  Getting it to work under linux was as simple as: adding the mount rules, installing gtkpod, and clicking "let gtkpod control mounting and unmounting of this device" - bam, done!
As it stands now, I don't know if I'd recommend an ipod anymore, but I haven't tried anything else (mines 40 gigs, so I have no compliants).  They scratch *really* easy, but otherwise are very nice.
Oh, and as a plus, you can read text files on it, keep contacts (gtkpod will convert them from a bunch of other formats), and even play games.
PS The current gtkpod doesn't support AAC, because who uses that format (it's also a bitch of a dependancy) - if it's important that AAC support be included, let me know.  And no, ipods cannot play oggs - I had to convert my entire library 8(

  • App licensing with a work provided i-device and a personal i-device

If I have 5 personal i-devices I can license an App once and have it synced across the 5 personally owned i-devices.
My questions relate to the following scenario:
    1) Work provides me an iPad and buys/installs some work related Apps
    2) I have a personally bought iPhone/iPod and I personall buy/install some non-work related Apps
    A) Am I allowed to have the work Apps installed on my iPhone?
    B) Am I allowed to have my personal Apps installed on my work iPad?

    For consumers:
    1. As a consumer you can, for personal use, buy a single license for an App and install that on as many iOS devices you own or control. There is thus no need to buy an App multiple times just because you want to use it on your iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.
    2. As a consumer you can authorize a single iTunes account on up to 5 computers. You can thus store your purchased Apps, music, etc. on up to 5 computers and synch iOS devices from those 5 computers. There is thus no need to buy an App multiple times just because you want to store and synch it from your laptop and your desktop computer.
    3. As a consumer you can authorize a single computer for more than one iTunes account and then synch Apps from up to 5 iTunes accounts to your iOS devices. On the iOS devices in the Store section of the Settings app you can log out of one iTunes account, log into another iTunes account and then purchase or redownload Apps using the App Store app. It is thus possible to put Apps on your kid's iPod touch that you purchased with your iTunes account as well as those your wife purchased with her iTunes account.
for educational institutions, other organizations and commercial enterprises?
    1. You need to buy one license for an App for each iOS device if that device is used by multiple users or one license of an App per user if that user is using multiple devices.
    2. Your organization can authorize a single iTunes account on up to 5 computers. Your organization can thus store the purchased Apps on up to 5 computers and synch iOS devices from those 5 computers. There is thus no need to buy an App multiple times just because your organization wants to store and synch that App from a single employee's laptop and desktop computer.
    3. You can authorize a single computer for more than one iTunes account and then synch Apps from up to 5 iTunes accounts to your iOS devices. On the iOS devices in the Store section of the Settings app you can log out of one iTunes account, log into another iTunes account and then purchase or redownload Apps using the App Store app. It is thus possible to put Apps on a employee's iPhone that were purchased with the employee's personal iTunes account as well as those purchased with a company iTunes account.

  • My husband has an Ipad that his company bought him that has their own apple ID for him, however, we have purchased a lot of music on our personal Apple ID.  Is there a way to put OUR personal music on his work Ipad?

My husband has a work Ipad with a different Apple ID.  Is there a way to load our personal music onto his Ipad with our Apple ID?  We don't want to have to repurcahse music just for his Ipad.  When we put it into our computer is asks us to switch the Apple ID, but we don't want to mess anything up for his work.

iPads are meant to be single user devices, with single ID's. The only way I can think of is if you burned cd's of your  music, then ripped them on the work computer that he syncs with and get them on the device from there (I'm guessing this will work, I don't purchase music do I don't know if the DRM travels when you burn cd's or not).
You can't run 2 different apple ID's on the same iPad.

Many thanks JEM24 for your help.  Ive just spent the best part of six hundred pounds on a new Sony Rx100m2 compact camera, so I have no interest in the Ipods camera at all really. I doubt Ill be watching many videos on it as Im very lucky in that I have a good Android tablet. Its more as a stock music player that Ill be buying the Ipod for, if indeed I do end up buying one. I dont like the idea of paying the exorbitant amount added for more memory space that Apple along with most other companies charge. In fact I read an article on this very subject just yesterday in the tech section of Flipboard. It stated in the article that in the case of the Iphone  the actual cost of each additional  gigabyte of storage  to Apple et al is something in the order of 60p.. This is certainly not reflected in the price us the customer has to pay at the till.. Its for this reason primarily that Apple in particular, because their products do not allow adding expandable memory of your own in the form of cheap to buy cards, that nobody in their right mind buys the 64gig etc Iphones..I am aware that we are discussing my potential purchase of an Ipod Touch here but you see my point. Many thanks again though for helping me.

  • Copying My Personal Music Library

How can I copy my OLD personal music library to a NEW computer setup/iTunes?
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.1.x)

Is your OLD library iTunes also? If so see this: iTunes: Moving your iTunes Music folder " http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748
If you are getting a new Mac, then there is the migration assistant, I've never used it but it may move iTunes too, it should say in the manual.

Copy everything from your backup copy of your old computer to your new one.
Its wrong to assume that everyone has a backup copy.
    are you PC or Mac?

Is it legal to convert the music files, which I have purchased in recent months, to the mp3 format and burn them on to a CD so that they can be played in non-apple music devices that dont support the M4A format?

Yes, of course it is legal.
To convert the format, follow one of these documents:
iTunes 11 for Windows: Save a copy of a song in a new file format
iTunes 11 for Mac: Save a copy of a song in a new file format
Also note that you have the option of buying your files in MP3 format in the first place, from Amazon MP3 or other online retailers.  MP3 files will work in iTunes as well as virtually every other player, program, and device.

  • Soundfonts & DLS Music Device

After a particularly nasty system crash - and subsequent re-install of Mac OS (10.3) from CD after a failed backup restore - I can no longer use downloaded soundfont via DLS Music Device.
It was downloaded so long ago; a search for .Sf2 extentions shows them throughout my system (Previous System Folder / HD -> Library / User -> Library), etc.
For clarification, where is their proper location? Any ideas/ tips on why I lost this functionality in GB after a crash and re-install?
    Thanks!

  • Why is my personal music downloading to my work computer?

I recently started a new job with a Mac running 10.7.5. I logged into my Apple account to listen to iTunes Radio and install apps. I did not authorize the computer to access my personal music files, but they are downloading to my work computer (presumably from iCloud?).
I tried to deauthorize the work Mac, but it says it is not authorized. I'm not comfortable having my personal music library on my work computer at this point. How do I make it stop downloading my music and delete the songs it's already downloaded?

    Might be the Wi-Fi...
Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
    Then restart the iPod.
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button down until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPhone. To turn iPhone back on, press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
    Now try downloading an app.

  • HT1351 i cant sync my personal music into my ipad2 ever since i instaled os7 on it what should i do to get my music on my ipad2

i cant sync my personal music into my ipad2 ever since i instaled os7 on

You can only sync everything with your one syncing computer/iTunes library. Yu can:
    - Make this your syncing computer by:
Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive: Apple Support Communities
    - Use the manual method to copy music and videos from any computer/iTunes library to the iPod. See the manual method included here:

  • DLS Music device

When I use GarageBand, I use Apple's DLS Music Device to access soundfonts and MIDI libraries.
When I select a MIDI Library through this device, it appears that there is no way to select an instrument from within the selected library.
To get around this, I use a MIDI keyboard with a program select dial.
Unfortunately, it doesn't let me go past program #199.
I've tried using my other MIDI keyboard with the number keys to access programs as well, and it won't let me do it either.
There are a whole bunch of instrument sounds in the QuickTime Musical Instruments library that I cannot access as a result of this, and it's also preventing me from using a lot of important sounds in my other MIDI libraries.
Also it won't let me use the drum kits in the QuickTime Musical Instruments library.
Is there any way for me to access these sounds from GarageBand?

See my answer in the other thread you started.
