Personal WIFI Hotspot and Download Speed

I am using an iPhone 4 as WIFI hotspot and realized that the download speed on my MacBook (which is connected via Wifi to the iPhone) drops from 7,2 to 3,6 MBit/s as soon as the iPhone switches to stand by mode (becomes locked). When I re-activate (unlock) the iPhone the speed immediately increases to 7,2 Mbit/s again.
Is this a known bug?

Not working correctly means in this case that it doesn't work at all.  I do have it activated through my carrier.  I do have it "turned on".  I do have the correct password typed into my lap top when trying to access the wifi.  The laptop recognizes that my iphone is broadcasting internet.  The laptop will go through the motions of acting like it wants to hook up through the wifi of my iphone but cannot.  It tells me in the end that the connection failed.  Before syncing with itunes, I was able to access the internet throught the wifi hotspot on my iphone4.  Since syncing with itunes, this function no longer works as described above.

  • Where is the Personal WiFi Hotspot option in iPad Air 2?

    Hello Bro,
I recently bought a iPad Air 2. I wanna use Personal WiFi Hotspot, but I am finding the operation. Will anybody help me in these issues,
    Thanking you in advance.

Well you have Personal Hotspot using cellular but not using iPad Wi-Fi.
Also only if you have a Personal Hotspot supported carrier.
Check if your carrier is on the list:
iPhone: Wireless carrier support and features - Apple Support
If your carrier is not on the list then you do not have Personal Hotspot.

  • Wanting to setup my iPad3 as personal wifi hotspot

I am trying to setup my iPad3 as a personal wifi hotspot.
As per all the web searched, I am supposed to find the hotspot option under either Cellular Data > Hotspot or General > Network > Personal Hotspot.  These options are not featured on the option lists at all however.
Latest IOS6.1.3 has been loaded, Network has been Reset repeatedly, but still no Hotspot option.  Service provider was contacted and they confirm that it is not being blocked / made unavailable by them.
    What next?

    Thank you for your feedback

  • Updated to the latest 4.3.2 from 4.1 however there is no personal wifi hotspot installed as promised.

I had just upgraded to the latest firmware 4.3.2 from my 4.1 version. The upgrade promises to install personal wifi hotspot but there is none. Any one facing the same problem?
NVM found it. Just go to settings --> network --> personal hotspot, turn it on and viola!

Re: iOS 4.3 Locked my factory unlocked iPhone 4!!
Apr 11, 2011 4:22 PM    (in response to John Doe 69)
Hi i just have seen your problem I had the same situation with 4.2.1 but this is not your upgrade to ios 4.3 . few months ago i bought a factory unlocked iphone from apple store at full price. I bring it home and then i activated it with my fido sim card everything was perfect .
Then i send it to someone of my family in Morocco . When they received the phone they inserted a sim card and it said Invalid Sim card the iphone has been locked to Fido trough activation process went to appstore they did a check and they told me that infact it was unlocked and now it has been locked to fido ( Strange situation ) and then they told me to bring the phone and they will replace it but the phone was at 6000 Km so i had no choice i contacted fido to unlock it Because only fido and rogers can do this here in Canada so i paid 50 $ and send to them the proof of purchase and then they unlocked it trough itunes.
What they told me at appstore they have a batch of phones in this situations but now it seems that the problem is fixed.
Finaly for your information if you buy a brand new iphone from any career in canada you can activate it with any other carieer and it's gonna be locked to this career ( For example you can buy a brand new iphone from telus and for the first time you can use it with rogers and it will be locked to rogers ) Even if it s suposed to be a telus phone .
I found this post. Oh my GODDDDD! If this is true then Apple is **** **** and so is Canadian carrier.

  • What are the uploads and downloads speeds

what are the upload and download speeds of the time capsule?

what are the upload and download speeds of the time capsule?
If you are asking about Internet download and upload speeds, this is limited by your service plan with your Internet provider.
It might be something like 10 Mbps download and 2 Mpbs upload, for example. That's because on most home plans, the download speeds are typically much faster than the upload speeds....unless you opt for a business type connection at significantly higher cost.
The Time Capsule is capable of much faster speeds than your service provider can ever deliver, so the bottleneck on your network will always be the Internet connection...not the Time Capsule.

  • WRT400N Upload and Download Speeds

I have a WRT400N router. I have a network set up where I am physically connected to the router while my two room mates have a wireless connection. When I test my connection I have a download speed of 25 Mb/s and an upload of about 2 Mb/s. My room mates however have a download speed of .5 Mb/s and upload of about .5 Mb/s. They are getting full signal strength from my router, so I am not sure what the problem is. What is the problem and how do I fix this? They should be getting much faster upload and download speeds.

After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch.  If you have not done this since the last firmware upgrade, then please do this now and see if it corrects your problem.  If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it  ---  you must setup the router from scratch.
If the above does not correct your problem, then the most likely cause is simply a poor wireless connection.  This can occur even if your computer shows "5 bars" or "full signal strength".
There are many causes for poor wireless connections, and many solutions:
First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
If your problem is that you are getting poor speed between your wireless n router and wireless n adapter, in the router, make sure the "Radio Band" is set to "Wide".
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4. For wireless n, make sure your standard and wide bands are at least 2 channels apart. For example try standard band on channel 11, and wide band channel 9.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna, if external, should be vertical.
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use. If your current network is not listed, enter its info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for your computer's wireless adapter.
Some users have reported improved wireless performance by switching to WPA encryption.
If you continue to have problems, try the following:
For wireless n routers, try setting the "n Transmission Rate" to 162 Mbps, and the (wireless g) "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps.
If you still have trouble, download and install the latest firmware for your router. After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch. If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
    Hope this helps.

  • Upload and download speeds of a DSL?

I was wondering if there a program that tracks the upload and download speeds of a connection to DSL?
Anybody create some kind of bandwidth monitoring program or Widget?

Thanks for the reply everyone. I've tried the 3 link you recommendedand they all have their pluses. I don't need to track right now just observe the trafic.
The best one for just seeing what is just going on was Menu Meter. It was just what I was looking for. It fit neatly on the menu bar and I can see the thru-put in action. It also has a few other perks as well. Great little tool!
Speakeasy was great to just check the DSL upload and download speeds from 8 different servers around the country.
If anyone has something new to add to this group of tools, I'll be glad to try them out.
    Thanks;

  • Suspected Malware slowing computer and Download speed?

I've done a little research and found out that certain malware on macs can be obtained through certain downloading sites. My computer is becoming slower and slower and download speed is being affected by something ( tested speed 2.3MB/s but the speed im getting is 40-100Kb/s ) both of which seem to be traits of malware or other viruses? Download speeds used to be higher and are still high other macs on the same connection. Ive tried downloading and running BitDeffender Virus Scanner and it found 4 problems, 2 of which where deleted, 1 quarantined and the last roams my computer free, but nothing improved anyway. Is my iMac infected, if so how to i remove the infection?
( its only 5 months old and is running 10.10.1 if that helps)

Please provide an EtreCheck report of your computer. However the first thing I will tell you is to uninstall (following the developers instructions) any antivirus, cleaning or other third party maintenance applications. Not only are these 100% useless some (most antivirus apps) tend to create more problems than they solve. There are zero viruses for OS X, however there is some malware out there that antivirus will not find. To avoid the small amount of malware out there takes just a small amount of common sense.
    Common sense primer!
NEVER download from a torrent! Next do not fall for any popups, ads, e-mails or phone calls that advise your computer has been compromised. These are SCAMS!!!!!!! Next is do not download anything from a site you do not 100% trust. That's it, it is that simple.
    Finally keep your Mac up-to-date!!!

upload and download speed is horrible.  it takes hours to download a movie from iTunes.

VangieChuck the problem is definitely not iTunes it is your ISP download provision. Either your ISP needs to make a service call and solve your bandwidth issues or you need a better service, granted it all depends where in the world you are located. In Kappy's and my neck of the woods we are use to 5 - 250 Mbps download rates with an average of about 25 mbps for most city dewellers. Upload will vary depending on your service.

No cordless phone (two iPhones and two iPads though).  It does have one or two walls on line of sight.  A few wireless door security zones.  And a large china cabinet that my wife sure wouldn't let me move.  Do any of these sound significant enough to drop the dowload from 30Gb to .1GB...while upload stays consistent.  I have had better signal strength through two walls 100 feet out from my house, havent tried recently though.  I am suddenly aware as my switch is acting up and i had to use wifi on my xbox.

  • My phone was hacked at a wifi hotspot, and my email address logged in the mail centre was compromised.. Could they have installed a keylogger on my phone? Is there anything I have to do to my phone to ensure its safe from this particular attack?

I changed all my passwords, but I'm just wondering if that's all I have to do.. Is there any extra measures you would take? Could they have installed malware on my phone? I will never connect to a wifi hotspot ever again. I'll just use 3G!

I have this really old email account that I haven't used properly in years, it was automatically set to log in the mail centre of this old iPhone I barely use, and was only using because my other phones battery had died, and I was at the park, bored, so I got the old phone out of my bag, I use it as an emergency phone for when my battery dies, but anyway, I logged into the hot spot, then a few days later my old email account had sent out a mass email saying "I am stranded in Thailand, please send money to this account" to my entire contact list, my sister sent me a text notifying me, and I quickly logged on and it said "looks like someone else is using your account" so I got texted a code, entered the code and regained access to my hotmail account, checked the sent folder and there were tons of sent messages..haven't used this account for many months before that, and I never log into public hotspots usually, it was a one off thing I did from that old phone because I thought I had no email account logged in, or any personal information, since I hadn't used it in ages, but I was wrong, as I learnt afterwards! So I'm absolutely certain, without a doubt, that it occurred at the hot spot. I looked it up online and apparently it is quite common, so I'm just wanting to make sure they can't still access my data.

  • Routers and download speed

It seems that over the year of using a router in my system my download speed has gotten much slower. I just did a test that showed "Download: 366 (Kbps)-Upload: 119 (Kbps)". Is that good or bad? I have been thinking it was a problem with the cable company but before I contact them I wonder if it could be the router slowing things down. My desktop hooks direct to the router and the wifi is my laptop. The slowness is also in my desktop that is not wifi. Is there anything I can check for? I suppose I should take the router out of the hookup and check my download speed but this would be a major job getting everything out of the desk and all. I was hoping for an easier way to check.

Wireless is always slower than wired connections.  If the wireless speed is at least 50% of wired speed, it is considered normal.  So, it looks like your wired and wireless is performing normally.
If you want to try for a little more wireless speed, you can try to optimize your system with the following tips:
First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.

Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for your wireless card.
Some users have reported improved wireless performance by switching from WEP to WPA encryption.
If you continue to have problems, try the following:
For wireless g routers, try setting the "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps.
    Hope this helps.

We even sent the Tablet back to Verizon and received another one.  The problem is the same, so I know it's the Tablet.   I borrowed my Parent's JetPack and we had incredible internet.   So, I know it's not our Location or our Laptop or Ipod!!
Yes, we have called Support countless times.  They have us check a different option or they think they have fixed it on 'their end', but to no avail.   HELP, we are so frustrated.
You might want to post about this issue at the Verizon Wireless forum instead: https://community.verizonwireless.com/
My advice for that though would be to double check your tablet to make sure the firmware is up to date. While it's apparently now illegal to unlock your device, if the device is already unlocked you may want to consider changing the ROM on it if you're so inclined. Sometimes the manufacturers's run of the mill OS has weird bugs like that.

you are dealing with two networks. There is a network between your computer and your router. There is a second network between your router and your ISP.
Port-forwarding is from your router to your computer.
    http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Motorola/SBG900/Azure us.htm
However, I always have the same IP address. This is because the wireless router--a Motorola SB900--will only recognize approved computers designated by the IP address.

You need to set Port-forwarding between your computer and your router. You will need a fixed IP address on a your Computer. There is to ways of doing this. You can set up a static IP address on your computer. A hack would be to add 10 or 20 to your IP address that your router gives out. For example if your router gives out 192.168.1.10 you of would add 10 to the ten giving 192.168.1.20. you need to make the addition to the right most number of which in the example is ten.
The section way is . . . You can have your router a signed a fixed address based on your MAC address. ( Each Internet device has a fixed address that is called the MAC address. This is a different address than your IP address. the MAC address is assigned in the factory. )
Another hack would be to Port-forward to the number your router assigned at random. If your Computer is the only computer on the router, the number should always be the same. It is a hack because this is not guaranteed.

There is really no "normal."  Uploads & downloads depends on your ISP.  Have you contacted them to see if the problem is on their end?
