Perspective Control and Distortion Controls in Camera Raw

I love ACR 4.1. Thanks for a fine product.
For a future release of ACR, is it beyond the bounds of possibility to include the Perspective, Vignette and the Distortion controls directly into ACR?
Thanks

>PTLens will get all the info from the EXIF data to select the right camera/lens/FL combo
The Exif data contains only the actual focal length and the maximal aperture value of the lens. These are not enough to identify the lens.
The MakerNote tag may or may not contain some more lens related information, but
1. in most images this is not present (it is not part of the Exif tags),
2. the structure of that data is not published,
3. there is a DNG tag, LensInfo, Adobe's DNG converter creates this tag from the MakerNote, but it contains only the min/max focal lengths and the respective max. apertures. This is still not enough to identify the lens, apart from the fact that the max aperture values are not filled for example in case of Canon lenses and Tamron/Sigma lenses on Canon body (I can state this with certainty only re Canon 20D and 1DsMarkII). Nikon's D100 and D2X shows the max. aperture values.
4. all this is still not enough to identify the lens.

Alternatively, install & use RawTherapee instead to develop your raw files instead (free and open source).

You will need to update to the latest ACR ver 6.7.1 for Photoshop cs5.

  • Setting White, Mid and Black Points in Camera Raw 7

I am using Camera Raw 7 and can not seem to locate where can you set the white, mid, and black points in Camera Raw with the eyedropper tool. It seems you have to create a new psd file in Photoshop to do this, which does not make much sense since it is a basic levels adjustment. I am batch editing a bunch of CR2 files, and I just need to select the black, mid and white points on a grayscale that I've shot in the images - is there a way to do this in Camera Raw 7? Thanks!!

ACR doesn’t work that way.  There is an eyedropper for the overall white-balance that you can set by clicking on a relatively bright, neutral area, but there aren’t black and white-point eyedroppers.  But, what is clipped black or white is determined by the output colorspace you have set at the bottom and you can get some idea of what will be clipped black and white by turning on the clipping indicators and watching for the areas you’d be eye-droppering on (the black and white patches in your grayscale) to start showing the clipping color overlay for black and white, but any further toning adjustments will move data in and out of what is darker than black and lighter than white so what is clipped for output will change as you fiddle with the various toning sliders.
The reason things are different:  In PS, when you set a black-point and white-point in Levels and click Ok, the data below and above those is thrown away and that is the starting point for the next adjustment.  In ACR, things are non-destructive and all the adjustments occur simultaneously, rather than sequentially as in PS, and no clipping occurs until you create the output file.  This means that the pixels that are darker than your black-point and lighter than your white-point are still there, and can be moved into the black-to-white range if you do further toning adjustments.  Having more headroom of the pixels that are outside the black-to-white range is good because you won’t get the posterization or banding that occurs when colors and levels are clipped after each adjustment in PS.
Can you describe what you intend your overall workflow to be on an image:  how much adjusting will occur in ACR and how much, if any, might happen in PS, after the image is opened into PS from ACR, or opened from a file saved from ACR?  There might be other ways to approach what you’re trying to accomplish.

Blue screen/Computer shuts down is almost always a hardware malfunction or a driver problem.
Make sure your video driver is up to date.
If it is, then the next suspect, in my mind, is overheating, make sure all of the fans in your CPU case are working properly.

  • Navigate, open, and save images in Camera Raw

This question was posted in response to the following article: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/creativesuite/cs/using/WS91C1E0BD-9600-42b2-8EBE-1E012ED61058. html

i'd double click on one and it would open in ACR, or I could highlight several images and they would all open in ACR - just like RAW files do.  but they were JPEGS.  it was awesome.
I don't agree with the awesome part in this I'm afraid
When you have set the preferences to Automatically open all supported jpegs instead of the default open jpeg with settings you will find yourself opening every jpeg in ACR, even it is just a small file you just want to view in PS.
Hence the right click option on selected jpegs and choose 'open in Camera Raw' is preferred by the vast majority of users

  • 10.4.7 and Photoshop CS2, Adobe Camera Raw.

Since updating to 10.4.7 Adobe Bridge will not build thumbnails of DNG files and only builds 1/6th size thumbnails of NEF files. The Camera Raw Plug-in is in the correct folder but Bridge will not show Camera Raw Preferences. All Adobe troubleshooting has been followed with no success, purging cahes etc.. No problems prior to updating to 10.4.7 and the latest iTunes. Any suggestions.

There is no obvious reason why CS2 should not run on your G4. Have you kept the CS2 up to date? Updated Quicktime? Kept 10.4.7 up to date?
There have been known issues which recent (over the last 2-3 months) updates from both Apple and Adobe are said to have resolved.
One obvious suspect is third party plug-ins. Have you tried disabling them (if you have any), and then re-enabling them one by one to see if this makes a difference?
You could also try the Adobe's own forum: http://www.adobe.com/support/forums/index.html although it can be hard to navigate!

  • What is the difference in PS E12 between 'File Open' and 'File Open in Camera Raw' ?

Both routes launch a screen saying Camera Raw 8.3 - Canon EOS 5D Mark III?
Likewise on this screen there is 'Cancel' and 'Done' Buttons', what is the difference both close that screen.
I am assuming the 'Done' Buttons saves any manipulation of exposure or colours you may have made? and the 'Cancel' just forgets them?
Is there a manual for this product; that one can reference, screen by screen? explaining what each option actually does.

If you are opening a raw file (.CR2), both routes are identical, because you have to convert raw files in ACR anyway.
If you are opening a jpeg file, you can open the file directly in the Elements Editor (Open),
    or
you can open it the the ACR module. The dialog is the same (or nearly) as for raw files, with the same sliders and features, including some you don't find in the editor : clarity, advanced denoising...
There are advantages in opening jpegs in ACR, especially because ACR works internally in 16 bits and in a wider color gamut. Very important for me is the fact that the ACR modules saves its edits as 'recipees' in the metadata section of the jpeg files, without changing any pixel value of the original.

Cancel does cancel every edit you have started. You are back to the original file.
'Done' saves your edits, as you rightly assume.
'Open' saves the edits and send them to the editor for further editing if you want, for local retouch or using layers for instance.
'Alt Open' does not saves the edits, but sends the edited result to the editor.
'Save' is only used if you wish to convert the raw files to the DNG format.

  • How to Save Camera Calibration and Lens Correction in Camera raw 6.1

I downloaded and installed the Camera Raw 6.1 release candidate.  I open an image and set the camera calibration and the lens correction to auto for Nikon.  I save these settings as new Camera raw defaults, but when I open other images, the changes were not made.  How can I save these items as defaults?
    Swila

Swila, were your "other images" previously edited in Camera Raw? I.e., do they already have saved image settings? The defaults that you save via the flyout menu will only apply to new images, or if you reset an existing image to the defaults. (e.g., choose "Camera Raw Defaults" from the flyout menu).

  • HELP!!  Adobe Updater won't work and can't install camera raw 4.6

I just installed Photoshop CS3 Extended onto my new MacBook Pro running Mavericks OS.  My Adobe Updater says "No Internet connection.  Please check your Internet settings and/or firewall.  Waiting for connection..." That's the first problem.  I figured out how to manually update Photoshop and Bridge, but Adobe Updater still shows this message when trying to check for updates.  Also, I've tried to update Camera Raw from 4.0 to 4.6 and I can't figure out how to manually install it.  I knkow the website says to do the following:
    Mac:
Exit Photoshop CS3 and Adobe Bridge.
    Open the Finder.
Navigate to the root of the local disk (not the user’s home folder).
    Navigate to Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-Ins/CS3/File Formats.
Move the existing plug-in to another location (for example, a new folder on your desktop). Ensure you keep this version in case you need to revert back.
Copy the Camera Raw plug-in, Camera Raw, from the download into the same folder as in Step 4.
Launch Photoshop CS3 or Adobe Bridge.
I nativagated to Library/Application Support/Adobe, but there is no Plug-Ins folder.  So, I manually entered "Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-Ins/CS3/File Formats" and it says this folder doesn't exist.  Can anyone help me update my camera raw?!  PLEASE!!
    Thank you so much!

  • HELP! How do I un-install and then RE-install Camera Raw 5.7 on my Mac?

My CS4 would no longer open my RAW files (Canon 5D Mark II) and I was told (on this forum) that I needed to update my camera raw to 5.7. So I downloaded 5.7 but could not figure out HOW to get it installed in the proper place. After trying but not succeeding, my CS4 now tells me there is NO camera raw installed, not even the old one I was running! So I tried to RE-install 5.7 but I get the message that it's already installed. So it's SOMEWHERE on my computer, but I don't know where. It's not in photoshop or where is should be, but I can't try to install it again because my computer tells me it's already installed. How do I remove it from my computer so that I can try again? OR MAYBE BETTER YET, HOW DO I FIND IT AND GET IT INTO THE PROPER PLACE?

    Thanks for your reply.
    I'm using version 10.9.4
I found the previous 5.7 plug in, trashed it, and started over again. Then I, once again, downloaded Camera Raw version 5.7, and then did the following:
I double clicked on the downloaded Camera_Raw_5.7 dmg and then double clicked on the cameraprofiles.mpkg
Then I installed the camera raw.plugin by going to (Macintosh hard drive) /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-Ins/CS4/File Formats, which was empty (somehow my previous version of Camera Raw was already gone).
Then dragged the new camera raw plugin from the dmg to the same folder.
I restarted my computer and there STILL is no Camera RAW in my Photoshop!! Good grief! Any more suggestions? Maybe you and I need to screen-share....

  • Color - Shine - background column of panels, contour line of tools and image area in Camera RAW

Is there any way to change - obscure - the brightness of the column trim panels and the outline of the image area in Camera Raw?.
In ACR 8.4 can change the brightness of the background image area - as in Ps - but can not find how to do the rest, and the truth is that it is a problem, since the image is darker than actual because of the brightness of the surrounding areas. Ideally there would be neutral gray .....
If you see an image in Bridge, having selected dark backgrounds for both the preview area and the various windows - thumbnails , metadata, folders , etc. - , as if we see in Ps with the same type of configuration (something Ps presents with dark background both in the area of image and layered windows , settings , menus, tools, etc ....) , we will see the picture clearer than in ACR , ie , if we develop a RAW file in ACR, especially if you have dark areas - eg night photographs - , end up leaving it more clear what is right, because of the contrast - glare - with the brightness of the area surrounding the image window , but I can not check until we go to Photoshop or return to Bridge.
So .... Is there any way to write the ACR window looking like Bridge or Photoshop ?. Is there a way to darken those areas (as there is in Bridge or Photoshop)?
If not, is something that developers should think about going ACR implemented with an update .....
(Not sure if this is the right place to ask this question ..... If not, I pray you tell me where to)
Thank you very much and kind regards

It took a long time to bring a dark UI to Photoshop & Bridge...sparked in part by Lightroom's dark UI. But, dealing with custom UI in plug-ins is a slightly different problem...I would like to see a dark UI as well. But it boils down to feature triage...given X number of engineer hours per version, what features are top most in the must haves...the elves on ACR are always working on new things. Hopefully a UI revamp (not just dark UI but also configurable panels and some other niceties) will rise to the top of the list.
One advantage of the new CC subscription model is that new features don't have to wait till some arbitrary major version number. New things can get added as they get done. Hopefully this will free up the ACR engineers to do some cool new things, sooner rather than later!

  • Bridge and displaying Sharpening in Camera Raw.

    Hello
Should the previews in Bridge CS5 and the slid show show sharpenig applied in Camera Raw?
    Mike Engles

    Hello
    Thanks for the reply.
I have now noticed that if I apply a very extreme sharpening in RAW,
it does not notice much, if at all, in Bridge. If I use the loupe in
Bridge or zoom to 100% in the slide show, the sharpening is certainly there.
I would have thought that such extreme sharpening would be noticeable
on a 1920 by 1200 monitor in normal slide show or Bridge view.
Perhaps it is using different previews. The curious thing is that
some of my  older images are using Adobe 2003 and these show
sharpening in normal Bridge view. When I convert to Adobe 2010, the
preview is rebuilt and the sharpening is no longer apparent.
    All very puzzling
