Pet Eye fix, by Sue Chastain

There is always a question of how to fix pet eye reflections, and there are lots of ways. But here is one by Sue Chastain that is really quick and easy,

Her photos and examples are great, as usual.
I did a bunch of pictures of a Golden Retriever this morning, they came out well.

this is a newly discovered news source .... I like it...
believe it or not.. it is a microsoft thing ( bing news ).
http://www.bing.com/news
what i like is that its just a sorta clearing house of listed news items from all sorts of places ( ny times, idaho banner, boston cryer, AP, etc etc. )
no ads is what I noticed right off.. ( you do get the news source page ads on those websites but not the stupid "preliminary " video / animation ads normally associated with links within those orgs.... like ....if you clk on a usa today link..you get some stupid ad obsuring page you want to see.. so you close that so you can get where you want ).
none of that happens from bing news that I saw ... the samples i tried ...you just go to the 'page'.
Thank goodness.. a listing of news items that seem up to date and is just simple news.
I have no problem with advertising and like the fact that so many people make the stuff ( earn livings making ads ).  some are beautiful and some are really stupid.. but so what?
what I dont get, in a general sense.. is how come so many people selling newspapers online think that ads will actually " work " in the instantaneous wold of computer online stuff...
OK.. I know google and yahoo and newspapers online do get advertisers to pay for spots on the websites.. but personally i think all that is simply cause of some phenomenom re: volume of hits...
I suppose some people do look at the ads and buy the stuff...but I dont.  If I want to read an article about stalins daughter that just died I dont clik on that link and then decide to buy a movado watch instead.  Or a mercedes.
Its just not what I'm looking for at the moment when browsing news items.
Its amazing that this world keep functioning at all if you ask me.

Photoshop 12 - When I try to use the Pet Eye fix and I click on the dogs eye, it puts the dark circle on the forehead or chest instead of the eye. I click on the eye though.
    Happens all the time.

That means you have the rectangular marquee tool selected and not the red eye tool.

  • Fixing Pet Eye

I would very much like to see a feature that fixes the green eye in dogs/cats that comes from using flash, set up to work in the same way as the "red eye" fix for people works.
    Thanks, CD

Make a selection of the offending area and apply a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer.

  • Cannot find pet eye option in toolbar

I have been trying to fix some pet eye in PS11 - but unable to find the check box in toolbox options.   All that comes up is autofix.   Can someone help me.

    Hi,
The Pet eye tool was not in PSE 11, it was new at PSE 12.
If you look at this thread it may help you with your pet eyes.

  • Why dont I have the pet eye function in the red ey removal tool?

I saw the tutorial regarding pet eye removal. That tool does not show up when I go to the red eye removal tool.

    Hi,
If you select the Red Eye tool in version 12, the Pet eye should be a tool option at the bottom.
    Is it not there?

  • Pet eye correction tool doesn't work as I expected.

I read the Help file info and watched the video for using the Pet-eye correction tool.  The photo they used was a dog.
I have cats, so I tried it with a cat photo.  In the photo I used, the pupil (center of the eyes) are olive green, with the white dot.  The area surrounding the eyes are yellow, the normal color. I expected the tool to darken ONLY the green.
For the attached photo, the settings I used are pupil radius-4%, darken 26%.  (I did try other settings/combinations.) No matter where in the green area I clicked, almost all of the entire eye turned dark, NOT just the pupil.  I can do a better job manually.
This is very disappointing, as this tool is the main reason that I'm evaluating Elements 12.

    Hi,
That is what I thougth as well. According the manual you can use an expresion, column, constant or bind variable for N.
N determines the nth row for which the measure value is to be returned. n can be a
constant, bind variable, column, or an expression involving them, as long as it
resolves to a positive integer. The function returns NULL if the data source window
has fewer than n rows. If n is null, then the function returns an error.

  • Pet Eye

I have photo's of my dogs that the red eye function of iPhoto will not remove. The photo's show my animals with reflective shiny green eyes. How can I correct this problem since the feature in iPhoto doesn't seem to work for animals.

For Pet eye I have no recommendation - have never tried it
In general I like Photoshop Elements but not sure how it would handle this specific problem easily

  • Atomatic Red Eye Fix

When I download pictures into Photoshop 6 - the program immediately starts "fixing" red eye.  As a result I ended up with black spots on some of the photos.  I would like to turn off the auto feature and fix the red eye pics myself.  How do I turn off the auto red eye fix feature?

Launch the Organizer and press Ctrl+G
In the Downloader click the Advanced Dialog button and then you can uncheck red-eye and other auto-fixes.

  • Pet "red eye" fix

How can I tweak the "red eye" tool in PSE 4.0 to fix "blue eye" or "yellow eye" in pictures of my cats? The only other method I see is select and fill, but that doesn't preserve color shading or normal light reflective characteristic of pupil.

Yes, thank you, Wendy. I had looked at that method, but being a rank beginner I was not able to actually make it work. I went back after you and Juergen posted and tried it again. It does help.
But what I was originally looking for is a setting for the regular Red Eye tool that would address the different colors and color gradients encountered with cat eyes. That such an option or capability exists is suggested in the PSE 4.0 User Guide on page 128, where it describes the Red Eye Removal tool: "Removes red eye in flash photos of people and green or white eye in pets."

  • What is the easiest way to fix "pet eye"?

Ya' know how dogs' eyes often look like they're glowing white? And how sometimes along with that, there's an effect of light shooting out from the eyes as well? PLEASE HELP! Thank you!

This is how I would do it.
Drag a eliptical marquee that completely covers one pupil.
Hold down the shift key, and add the other pupil.
Add some feather to the selection
Add a new layer, and with the selections in place, add a layer mask
Fill that layer with black, (this is more flexible than filling the selection because you can adjust the layer mask)
Add a levels adjustment layer to the top of the stack
Make a round selection in the centre of one pupil, about half the size of the pupil, and on a new layer, (above the levels layer) fill it with white.
Copy that layer, and move to the center of the other pupil.
    Merge the two white layers.
Now use Guassian blur on the white layer so that it feathers out to the edge of the pupil
If it gets too thin, copy the layer.
Now move the white layer by nudging with the cursor keys so it directly faces the camera.
Go to the levels layer you made earlier, and drag the output 'black' slider to the right to tone up the black.
I'd also add a tiny hightlight to each eye, perhaps using a tiny flare brush.

  • Red Eye Removal in PSE11 - Pet Eye option does not show up.

So what do I do now if the program does not give me the control it is supposed to give me?

After watching a video of this tool it seems this was only introduced in PSE12. So it should be mentioned in the help that this is only seen in 12 rather than us faithful users wasting our time on a function that doesn't exist in previous versions.

  • Red Eye removal for pets

    Hi,
I'm using PE 4.0 and have been unable to get the red-eye removal tool to work with pet eye. I suspect it doesn't work because pets reflect yellow, green and even blue light instead of red. Is this a known limitation? Is there an alternative method in PE for removing pet eye?
    Thanks,
    Tom S.

Thanks for the tips. I searched for Wendy Williams' suggestions in the forum but haven't found them.
I've been experimenting with both of Mark's procedures in the meantime. Method 2 gave the best results when I modified it to preserve the glint in my pet's eyes. The modified Method 2 (using PE 4.0) is as follows.
    1) Use Layer 1 to preserve the glint:
    a) Select the background layer and use the magic wand tool to select the saturated white glint of each eye. I like the "add to the selection" option here - saves time. Copy the pixels selected and then turn off the selections (Select|Deselect).
    b) Create a new layer (Layer 1, w/ defaults of normal blending and 100% opacity), select it and paste.
    2) Use the brush tool as in your Method 2 to black out the pupils:
    a) Create a new layer (Layer 2, w/ defaults of normal blending and 100% opacity) as the middle layer and select it.
    b) Set foreground color to default black (or use the eyedropper tool to pickup a natural dark shade near the pupil from the Background Layer).
    c) Paint over the pupil in Layer 2. Layer 1 should be over Layer 2 so that the glint is preserved despite the painting of Layer 2.
I did find a bug in PE 4.0 when doing this. In panning a zoomed picture from within the editor, I somehow got the layers to be out of sync with each other. When this happened I needed to start over.
A trick that doesn't work is to use Enhance|Adjust Color to change the pupils to red and then use the Auto Red Eye fix. What happens is that the tool does not recognize the color of animal eye irises and the tool changes them into pupils with disturbing results.
