Pet "red eye" fix

How can I tweak the "red eye" tool in PSE 4.0 to fix "blue eye" or "yellow eye" in pictures of my cats? The only other method I see is select and fill, but that doesn't preserve color shading or normal light reflective characteristic of pupil.

Yes, thank you, Wendy. I had looked at that method, but being a rank beginner I was not able to actually make it work. I went back after you and Juergen posted and tried it again. It does help.
But what I was originally looking for is a setting for the regular Red Eye tool that would address the different colors and color gradients encountered with cat eyes. That such an option or capability exists is suggested in the PSE 4.0 User Guide on page 128, where it describes the Red Eye Removal tool: "Removes red eye in flash photos of people and green or white eye in pets."

When I download pictures into Photoshop 6 - the program immediately starts "fixing" red eye.  As a result I ended up with black spots on some of the photos.  I would like to turn off the auto feature and fix the red eye pics myself.  How do I turn off the auto red eye fix feature?

Launch the Organizer and press Ctrl+G
In the Downloader click the Advanced Dialog button and then you can uncheck red-eye and other auto-fixes.

  • Red Eye removal for pets

    Hi,
I'm using PE 4.0 and have been unable to get the red-eye removal tool to work with pet eye. I suspect it doesn't work because pets reflect yellow, green and even blue light instead of red. Is this a known limitation? Is there an alternative method in PE for removing pet eye?
    Thanks,
    Tom S.

Thanks for the tips. I searched for Wendy Williams' suggestions in the forum but haven't found them.
I've been experimenting with both of Mark's procedures in the meantime. Method 2 gave the best results when I modified it to preserve the glint in my pet's eyes. The modified Method 2 (using PE 4.0) is as follows.
    1) Use Layer 1 to preserve the glint:
    a) Select the background layer and use the magic wand tool to select the saturated white glint of each eye. I like the "add to the selection" option here - saves time. Copy the pixels selected and then turn off the selections (Select|Deselect).
    b) Create a new layer (Layer 1, w/ defaults of normal blending and 100% opacity), select it and paste.
    2) Use the brush tool as in your Method 2 to black out the pupils:
    a) Create a new layer (Layer 2, w/ defaults of normal blending and 100% opacity) as the middle layer and select it.
    b) Set foreground color to default black (or use the eyedropper tool to pickup a natural dark shade near the pupil from the Background Layer).
    c) Paint over the pupil in Layer 2. Layer 1 should be over Layer 2 so that the glint is preserved despite the painting of Layer 2.
I did find a bug in PE 4.0 when doing this. In panning a zoomed picture from within the editor, I somehow got the layers to be out of sync with each other. When this happened I needed to start over.
A trick that doesn't work is to use Enhance|Adjust Color to change the pupils to red and then use the Auto Red Eye fix. What happens is that the tool does not recognize the color of animal eye irises and the tool changes them into pupils with disturbing results.

  • Use auto red-eye and auto c/a algorithms from RSP

I'm assuming that Michael J. and company are still associated w/ LightRoom, I'd like to see the auto red-eye fix and the auto c/a fix functionalty from RSP used in LightRoom. I find the manual red-eye fix tool in LightRoom difficult/unwieldy and the c/a remover does not do as good a job RSP did automatically (yes, I recognize it could be user error, but I'd still rather have the tool automatically make the attempt and let me fine tune if needed.)
    Thanks,
    Matt

You are correct, I misremembered about the red-eye removal (I must have been thinking of a different package.) The PF control may have been it, but whatever "it" was, it got rid of the PF as well as the c/a that is evident in other software (including LR.) So whatever it was, I'd like it back....

  • Automatic red eye correction

How canI disable automatic red eye correction?

There are multiple places where you choose to disable automatic red eye correction.
When you do a Get Photos from Files and Folders, the dialog Window where you select which files or folders contains a checkbox on whether auto red eye fix should be done. I believe that the default was yes but it seems on my system that after unchecking it once that it stays unchecked for subsequent use.
Similarly, when I did a Get Photos from Camera or card reader, the Photo downloader window had a check box for the Red Eye fix.
I have not seen any central place to shut off auto red eye for all types of processing.

  • Red-eye Edits are not Adequate

I have some time on my hands right now so I thought I would start to go through my 13,000 photos and start to group and edit my libraries. I think the last time I did this was with iphoto 4ish.
But I am finding that the red eye fix is not adequate for this purpose. If the shot is relatively close and the eyes are burning red then the auto red eye works. If this is not the case then going to manual and using zoom does an ok but not good job on 80% of those cases. But many photos are just not fixable. I would get about 5-10% that are not fixable. I seem to remember that the earlier red eye worked much better.
Are there work arounds to this problem?

Try selecting the eye and applying a Hue/Saturation adjustment. This can be done via Enhance > Adjust Color > Hue/Saturation or by adding a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer. In the H/S dialog box select in the pull-down list the appropriate color you want to remove, and move the Saturation slider left.

  • Aperture 3.4.3 Red Eye

Is anyone still having issues applying red eye fix to photos?  I've read through a few posts and tried the reprocess master but nothing seems to work.  I've downloaded updates and red eye reticle doesn't work.  Any suggestions?

The redeye fix will remove red eyes, not white eyes - it is recognizing the red retina illuminated by the flashlight, as seen through the wide open pupil. It does not remove white, specular highlights from the eyes.
To get rid of specular reflection - white spots - brush in saturation and less intensity.

  • Auto Fix Red-Eye in Aperture?

    Hello,
I'm a newbie to Aperture and I was just trying to figure out where in Aperture can I fix red-eye automatically [similar to how it is done in iPhoto 11]? I realize that I can fix the red eyes manually, but is there a simple button that I can push that will automatically fix the red eyes in a photograph? This feature is really nice in iPhoto 11 as it will fix 99% of the red-eyes, etc. Just hoping there is a similar feature in Aperture.
    Thanks for your help!!!

Thanks for the response Frank. I was afraid that this may be the answer. No issue, I'm just surprised that it's not available especially with all the bells and whistles that Aperture offers.
    Thanks again for your help!

  • IPhoto 9.4.2 - Unable to Fix Red-Eye

Since upgrading to iPhoto 11  v 9.4.2 with OS 10.8.3, I am unable to Auto-Fix Red-Eye in my photos.
And even the Manual fix is erratic.
This compares very unfavourably with the ease of dealing with red-eye in previous versions of iPhoto/Mountain Lion.
There are no unrecognized faces involved.
I did delete the preference file com.apple.iPhoto.plist in my Home Folder/Library/Preferences folder.
I could not find a Cache.db cache file in Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder to delete.
I have Rebuilt the library using Control-Click to open iPhoto as well as by using iPhotoLibrary Manager.
No improvement in the ability to get rid of Red-Eyes!
    Appreciate any suggestions.

It is a bug that will be corrected in an upcoming update..no info available when this will occur!!

  • When using 'Fix Red-Eye' or 'Retouch' the circle tool isn't showing

When using 'Fix Red-Eye' or 'Retouch' in iPhoto 11 (v9.4.3), the circle tool isn't showing any longer. Only the normal arrow cursor. It still works fine, I just can't see the size of the circle against the photo.
I've tried restarting iPhoto and the whole Mac, but no luck.
    Any ideas? Thanks!

  • Is there a way I can auto fix the red eye in all photos in my library, rather than fixing each individual photo seperately?

    Hi,
I have lightroom 5 which I use to edit photos taken using a ringflash around my canon 60D. The ringflash causes subjects in the photos to have red eye. Is there a way you can auto correct the red eye over all the photos you import rather than using the tool to edit each individual photo separately?
    Cheers,
    Tegan

    The short answer is: no.
And I don't *think* there is a longer answer - but maybe somebody knows better..
    Sorry,
    Rob.

  • Red Eye Adjustment not saved (completely)

After upgrading my library, I tried editing some photos.
On one, I made red-eye adjustment that looked just fine--that is until I saved the edit. Once saved, the red-eye correction was different (and not as complete) as I had seen in the edit window. Some of the corrections were good, but one I could not get to save properly!
Anyone else having this problem? Or better yet, know of a workaround or fix?
    ++ Peter
    iMac 15" G4 800MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I'm having the exact same thing. I make red-eye adjustments, it says it's saving, but the red-eye tool changes are NOT saved. Here are some things I've tried doing before re-trying the red-eye tool, none of which have fixed the problem:
    1. Making other edits in iPhoto and saving them first.
    2. Making other edits in photoshop and saving them first.
    3. Duplicating the image in iPhoto.
    4. Reverting to original and starting over.
    5. Exporting the photo and re-importing it.
    6. Exporting the photo, editing it in Photoshop, and reimporting it.
    7. Exporting the original TIFF, converting to PNG, and re-importing it.
    8. Exporting the original TIFF, converting to JPEG, and re-importing it.
    9. Exporting the TIFF, scaling it down slightly, and re-importing it.
    10. Cropping it.
    11. Exporting as TIFF, downsizing to 2,000 pixels wide, and re-importing it.
    Here's what did work:
    - Exporting it as a jpeg scaled down from 3004 pixels wide to 2000 pixels wide and re-importing it.
    - Exporting as a TIFF, scaling down to 1000 pixels wide, and reimporting it.
NOTE that scaling it down to a 2000 pixel wide JPEG allows the edit to work, but scaling down to a 2000 pixel TIFF does NOT! Yet scaling it down further as a TIFF does work! I also tried scaling it down just slightly as a JPEG- from 3004 to 3000 pixels, which did NOT work.
I have no idea what's going on, but it's sure annoying. The red eye tool makes perfect adjustments, and then anytime I leave that image and go back to it, the changes are not there, despite iPhoto saying "saving changes."
I'd be glad to send a test image this happens to to Apple, if anyone wants it, because this is definitely a bug, and an annoying one. It doesn't happen with most images, so if Apple doesn't happen to have an image around that this happens to, they won't be able to re-create the bug for testing.
