PETITION: Change Zen Touch "Random" button functionali

I've heard alot of people mention this and thought it might be a good idea to make our voices heard (we might as well make use of all the time creative is taking to release the firmware!).
Basically I'm sick and tired of the random button. Sometimes I have the zen touch in my pocket and accidently press the random button and away goes my entire custom playlist, its so annoying especially when I haven't saved the playlist. It happens at least two times everyday while I'm on my way to college, I nearly broke down in tears the last time it happened. Yes I can use the hold switch, but I frequently switch tracks and its a joke having to hold/un-hold/hold/un-hold/hold constantly. Also, the remote is a rip-off so theres no going there!
OK, my proposal is this:
a) Single press - Zen Touch switches between normal and shuffle mode.
b) 3 second press - Zen Touch loads up entire music library in shuffle mode.
I'm 99.5% sure this is possible via firmware update, so please Creative, put me out of my misery!!!Message Edited by titaniumx3 on 05-05-2005 07:7 AM

I'd like to throw my $0.02 in. I completely agree that the RANDOM button's functionality should be changed. I don't use it because, upon pressing, it loads my ENTIRE library into the shuffle playlist. The problem is that I don't just carry music on my Zen Touch. I have audio books and audio dramas. Each audio drama is broken up into 8 to 20+ tracks. So, with the current RANDOM button functionality, it would work this way:

Plays a Massi've Attack song
Plays an Incubus song
Plays Track 3 of the Doctor Who audio drama "Chimes of Midnight"

Plays a Cure song
Plays a reading from "The Dark Tower Book 4: Wizard and Glass"
Plays a Beastie Boys song
Plays a Strokes song
Plays Track from the Doctor Who audio "Scherzo"
etc....

Clearly, this isn't a realistic way to shuffle audio. It works great if you use your Zen Touch for PURELY music. But I don't. I'd rather see the RANDOM button toggle between NORMAL and SHUFFLE modes, but not load any audio tracks to playlist. In fact, that was my first thought when I bought the Zen Touch of how the button works. Currently, for me, it's a pain.

Zen Touch Random Button Sugges

Others have wished the "random" button on the Zen Touch just played a randomized "selected music" list, rather than everything on the player as it does now. My ideal suggestion would be to make this button function something like the FFWD button; push it to randomized selected music or push and hold to randomize the whole dri've. The idea of the dedicated "random" button was quick access to the "shuffle" function without going through the menu system (same as dedicated volume controls, etc.). Yes, everyone knows you can chage the play mode to shuffle and that will shuffle the "selected music". To do this requires several menu steps, however. Bumping the random button by mistake (the way it is set up by Creative now) causes your entire Zen to shuffle EVERYTHING. This takes, in my opinion, a positi've feature of the player and turns it into a negati've. I think pressing the button should toggle "random" in selected music only. This would be convenient and I think this is probably more in line with what was intended for this button to begin with. If you really want to shuffle your whole library (why?), you could press and hold the button.
It is not a huge deal, because there is a way to get the same thing done using the menu system, but then why have a dedicated button at all?

Changing Zen Touch Startup Scre

So I was in "Nomad Explorer", loading music onto my Zen Touch 20GB, and I clicked the settings button and I saw that I can change the startup screen, so I created a 60x04 monochrome bitmap and chose it in the settings area, and it seemed to take it, but it made no effect on my device.
Notes: I have updated with the new firmware and all online updates

People are having issues with startup screens and the latest firmware, so this might be the issue.
Also the startup screen doesn't show until the player has done a full shutdown, which occurs after 24 hours.
You can simulate this though by pressing the reset button.

Solved Zen Touch unresponsive buttons problem, USB still dosen't work tho

2 months after my Zen Touch was dropped and the buttons became unresponsi've, I finally figured out the solution and it works beautifully now.
Unfortunately the USB still doesn't work and I was wondering if anyone might know whats causing that?
My guess is damage to the board itself, which in that case I won't be able to fix it ;_;
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Seems to be a common problem with these. How did you get the buttons to respond? Do you know of a place that does repairs?

Replacement Zen Touch Randomly Disconne

So the first Zen Touch I got several months ago worked fine until about a month ago when it got a hard disk error. I got an RMA and got it replaced. However, the replacement, upon transferring files, would stop after just a few files had been transferred, claiming that the device had been disconnected (it hadn't.) I was using the latest firmware and drivers and the problem persisted in several different transfer methods. So I contacted Creative and they basically told me to get another RMA. So I did that, and uninstalled the drivers. When I got my second replacememnt and reinstalled the latest drivers and firmware, it had the exact same problems. So what could possibly be going wrong?

Zen Touch / Random M

Hi there!
when i'm in "Random" mode the Zen plays songs from my whole library.
Can i restrict the selection to a certain genre or album or artist?
I don't want to mix classic with rock with blues etc...

Yes. Go to the main menu, then to Play Mode, then select Shuffle, and start playing a certain Artist and all the songs just from that artist will play in random.

Zen Touch - Random play interupt

Occasionally when using random play mode around 20 minutes after starting, my Touch stops mid-song and re-boots from the intro screen. All on it's own, it starts playing from the point where I originally turned it on 20 or so minutes earlier.... same song, same volume settings, etc. After this happens, I did the disc clean-up and reboot/rebuild library, and all seems well. But it still occasionally happens. I haven't been adding music lately, so I don't think it has anything to do with fragmented files. Any help out there?
Other than this relati'vely minor problem and my inability to synch with WMP0 playlists, I love my Touch!

I don't think the Touch has a sleep timer, but it shouldn't cause it to spontaneously reboot either.
Do you have the latest firmware, or have you tried reloading the firmware?

A broken Zen Touch reset button???

has anyone heard of this before? they are telling me to send it in with $40...which is a little steep i think. just wondering if anyone else had this happen to them. thank you.

hasn't been a year but it is after 3 months. the button won't even push in anymore. i am getting nothing and it's doing nothing like when it use to work. luckily it's not locked up right now or i'd be screwed.

Weird Menu/Random button conflict on Zen To

Sometimes when I press the "menu" button on my Zen Touch, it randomly queues all tracks, as though the random button has been pressed instead. Has anyone else noticed this problem? It's a fairly minor annoyance (especially compared with some of the other problems I've had with the Zen Touch *grumble grumble* :angry: ) but still, it's odd. Firmware reloads, harddri've cleanups etc do nothing to change the problem.

I think you have a "mechanical" problem i.e. when you're pressing the Menu button due to its proximity it's also pressing the random button as well. Sounds like you might need to return your player... but you could try a reset and a disk cleanup, and perhaps updating the firmware. To access the Rescue Mode hold down the play button and KEEP it held down, press the tiny reset switch once, and KEEP the play button held down until the player boots into the Rescue Mode. Choose Disk Cleanup from the menu.

Is Disabling Random on Zen Touch Possib

This random button is giving me major headache. I tried to open the case but even that didn't as well as expected. Is there a way to somehow turn this off?? PLEASE HELP

If you actually used a Zen Touch, you might know what he is talking about. The idea for the random button was not well thought out at Creative. True, you can lock the player, but then you can't adjust the volume without unlocking, defeating largely the convenience of dedicated volume buttons. The random button also initiates a massi've shuffle of your entire library---not just the selected music. Most of us who would like this changed want something that offers to immediatlely shuffle selected music with one click and the whole library with two (or by holding it down) or something like that. I have accidentally hit this button more than one (you really only have to touch it) and it screwed up completely my selected music. This is certainly a legitimate issue.Nobody (not me, anyway) wants to have to lock-unlock the player before every single function change (volume, pause, etc.). If you have 3,000 or so songs on this player, watch what happens when you bump this button.

Buttons on Zen Touch performing the wrong funct

I've had this problem for a while now on my Zen Touch, where often times when I push the Menu button it acts as if I pressed the Random button instead. At first I though it might have to with the proximity of the buttons to each other, but the other day I hit the Rewind/Back a Track button and it initiated Random mode. Anyone else have this problem or know of any solutions?

I also have the same problem. Is there a fix for this?

Zen Touch buttons not working prope

Recently THe forward button has been either pauseing my player or randomizing all tracks. The back button also needs to be pressed more then once or hard to get it to work.... Anyone know why it has begun doing this?

HI All. The problem with the Zen Touch buttons starting to behave strangely is well known in the old users community. Zen Touch button prob

The buttons on my Zen aren't working when I press them, the odd thing is the touchpad and the on/off button work fine its just the others/main ones that stuff up

Try reset first:
Insert a paper clip into the Reset hole on the lower left side of the player. If that doesn't work go to rescue/recovery mode:
Creative Zen Firewire / USB 2.0 / Zen NX / Zen Xtra / Zen Touch
Ensure that the Jukebox Zen is turned off.
Hold down the Play/Pause button and insert a paper clip into the Reset hole on the Jukebox Zen.
Remove the paper clip from the Reset hole.
The Jukebox Zen will enter the Recovery (Rescue) Mode (release the play/pause button) and the following options will be displayed:
).Clean Up (Performs a disk scan on the players harddisk)
2).Format All (Formats the players harddisk - Note: all contents will be lost)
3).Reload OS (Reloads the Operating System on the Jukebox. Note: Reloading your OS, will not effect the contents of the files stored on your Jukebox Zen)
4).Reboot (Reboots the device).

Zen Touch - WMA Backward Button Prob

I have realized that with WMA songs my Zen Touch crashes when I press the back button to relisten a song. In WMA DRM Songs protected It happen every time, in WMA normal songs some time, but not always.
There is any way to resolve this problem that was not format the player? Is mine or I have to way some firmware upgrade to resolve this problem?

Thank you for your information, I'm in the same situation. I'll hope that in a future a new release of the firmware resolve it. But on my hand I have only about 30 songs that probably I'll burn to a CD and re-rip with MP3 format.

Zen Touch Front face buttons prob

Hi, I own a Zen Touch, and suddenly today, all the front face buttons virtually cease to work. In the past, the scroll strip sometimes worked, and sometimes didn't, but always with a little massaging, it ended up functioning again. I've read the other topics about this same problem and have tried applying various amounts of small pressure to the front plate to no success as well as installing the new firmware. The only response i Will get out of it on the front plate is pressing with quite a lot of pressure on the menu or back buttons and only then will these 2 buttons function. note: the side buttons work fine.
From reading other topics, it looks like I'll either have to return it or trash it. My question for you is, the player has only very minor nicks and scrapes from normal use except for a larger dent in the bottom left side of the player which occured 5-6 months ago. I bought the player late december last year. Would creative void the rma/warrenty because of something like that?

I had exactly the same problem with mine about a few weeks ago, all the facia buttons didnt work, including the scroll, but volume up/down, power button, and hold worked. Apparantly its when the front comes loose from the board or whatever inside so they dont connect, this is why if you push it down on the front (just to the left of the scroll pad for me) it seemed to work. I was told to access recovery mode but of course, because you cant hold play down (because it doesnt work) it wont access it. I emailed creative and they told me near enough straight away that I could send it back for repair. I got a new one sent to me Hopefully you shouldnt have any problems because I hadn't even got proof of purchase ( i brought it off amazon.co.uk about 0- months before) and they said I didnt need to send proof of purchase as they had checked the serial number. Hopefully everything should go ok then :smileytongue:
