Also, how to take automatic backup of shared folder from another woekstation?

The drive should have NTI Backup Now EZ on it.  Install it and adjust what you want backed up in the settings.

  • How to configure Time Capsule for Automatic Backup AND HARD DRIVE USE

I tried to configure Time Capsule for back up and as a hard drive. I record music and need to copy the music myself onto an external hard drive for speed, so I want the TC to double as an external hard drive, and do the back up. I want to be able to open the TC as a hard drive, to open my songs from it. Can it do both?

I finally figured it out. I am able to access my TC from the "shared folder." When I click on it, I get the "connection failed message." I failed to notice the login button in the upper right -- user error due to my Windows based education. The button is very subtle. Once I login, I can create folders and add content.
I didn't see a partition option. Where is that? Just curious.
    Thanks!

  • Does time machine automatically backup external hard drives?

    Hi
I have 4 external disks connected to my macPro and a 5th which I am using to backup too. In the TM prefs I have selected the drives & specific folders that I DON'T want backed up. Can I assume it will back EVERYTHING ELSE up, including the external drives?
I conducted an experiment - I unmounted one of the external drives (my main Logic projects disk), then entered TM. I COULDN'T FIND the Projects disk even though the BackUp disk was still mounted! So if there was a problem with the Projects drive HOW would I access my backed-up projects?
I don't have much faith in TM at the moment.
    Cheers
    Chris

    Hi
Time Machine will back up the files for all users, as well as the system files.

  • Toshiba Portable Hard Drive - no option screen

Bought a 1 TB automatic backup portable hard drive and connected to my computer running Windows 7.  I clicked on the exe file and lights blinked on computer and drive.  I thought all was well.  This morning, I attached the drive again and looked at the files backed up the day before.  Nothing except a 1KB login.ini file.  Nothing backed up.  I opened the users manual and saw that the screen giving the option to backup or restore never came up.  In fact nothing came up - just blinking lights.  What do I do?

I have same problem. I've never seen this screen either. I just plugged it in and it indicated it was doing daily automatic backup. I just discovered that I can't find any documents backup since the day I first plugged it in. Will check the warranty on the thing and try to get Toshiba to take it back.

  • My portable hard drive doesn't pop up in my computer

    i have a :
500GB Toshiba Automatic Backup Portable Hard Drive
when i plug it in, the blue light pops up and it doesnt sound like theres no problem but it just doesnt pop up in my computers.... so i right click computers and go to manage>Disk management, and i found it so if i assign somehow doesnt have a drive path i guess? so i assign it one and it works now, it's in my computers, i can put files and it'll save it. but everytime i go to a new pc, i have to go to the entire process of assigning it a drive over and over to have it available in my computer. is there an actual fix to this?

Im having the same issue - the drive was operational until it became unreadable.

  • Backup I-Tunes Music to another portable hard drive?

I would like to backup my music to a portable hard drive instead of multiple DVDs within the I-Tunes program. Is there another way to do this?

You can't backup to an externa hard disk in iTunes, but there is nothing to stop you doing it in Windpws Explorer.
Assuming you have a default installation i.e music files in the iTunes Music folder, just close iTunes and copy the iTunes folder to the external disk.
It more convenient to use backsoftware which can backup changes, so after the intial backup, further backs are fast.
There is an article on backup here:

  • Restore Windows 7 backup file to portable hard drive

Restore Windows 7 backup file to portable hard drive
I have a full system backup on an NAS - 241 zip files.
The backed up Windows 7 laptop failed irreparably, and I now have a new laptop running 8.1.
I have attempted to create a mounted drive of the old backup - but get a compatibility error from 8.1
I would like to make an accessible copy of the original Win 7 drive on a portable hard drive and access the documents, .pst files, and music files.
    Any suggestions very welcome.
    Thanks

    Hi,
To restore your file from Windows 7, you need to restore these file from Windows 7 system, then choose the feature of system restore to restore these file.
Please refer to the link below for more details about how to restore your file. Especially notice "To restore a backup made on another computer".

  • Backup Library, Albums & Titles to portable hard drive

I read the posts but confused on best way to move an entire library to a portable hard drive so it not only would be backup but also could be taken to family who also have Macs with ilife6. So they wouldn't have to manipulate individual jpegs, put in albums and retitle.
    Many thanks,
    Ralph

    Ralph
The item that stopped it had a long title and a /.
In OS X the slash '/' is a shorthand for New Folder (or Directory), so, for instance, Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library Folder reads to the Operating System as Home Folder -> In there Pictures Folder -> In there iPhoto Library Folder. If you use a / in a file name, the computer things in means new folder and that makes no sense, so the copying stops.
How long is the Filename? OS X can use very long names (tho' I can't recall the exact amount offhand). However Window formatted disks have a 32 character limit. I wonder if your external disk is formatted for Windows?

  • If I restore My Mac OSX Snow Leopard can I get all my files back from a time machine backup made on a portable hard drive?

I want to restore my MacBook Pro running Snow Lepoard, I made a time machine backup on a portable hard drive, can I get all the files back when resseting the OSX from the Hard Drive?

If you're using the Mac App Store version, there is initially no clean install option unless you're running the installer on a different drive or partition; your existing data will remain as is. If you're doing it from Lion's recovery partition or using the USB flash drive after erasing the internal drive, yes.

  • How can I get iTunes to find dislocated files on my portable hard drive?

I have had to move my music files onto a portable hard drive to save space but now when I plug my portable hard drive in and try to play tunes the exclamation mark comes up. iTunes can identify individual mp3's when I want to play them, through a manual file search, but is it possible for iTunes to find all the music files at once either when I ask it to or even better identify them automatically for me?

It looks like too many changes already had taken place in the 'iTunes Library' file, to start from the original situation.
You can of course restore all the links manually, but you're probably still busy doing that next week.
Try to rebuild the library, using the instructions in this article:
How to recreate your iTunes Library
    You could loose some information.
BTW. If your library mainly contains MP3's and AAC's and Apple Lossless, you won't loose any track related information (artwork, name, artist, album etc.)
That information is stored inside the song file.
Other information is stored inside the library files.
More info in: What are the iTunes library files?
You already made changes. Some links probably point to the external disk and some point to the internal. So I'm not sure re-creating the library will give satisfactory results. I hope it does of course.
If it's all a mess now, you could consider to start from scratch.
By doing this, you will loose all playlists, ratings, podcast subscriptions etc. but not track related info as mentioned above.
To do this, trash the 'iTunes Library' file and run iTunes. you will start with an empty library. Drag and drop the 'iTunes Music' folder on it.
All music will be added to the library.
Consider this as a last resort. Try re-creating first.

  • Back up to portable hard drive rather than discs - how?

Can i back up my itunes to my portable hard drive rather than disc as 'help' suggests? How do i do it?

Like CTJon suggests, just use Windows Explorer to copy the iTunes folder and all its subfolders over to your portable drive.
You can't do it using iTunes. iTunes only has the disk backup option.
For incremental changes, you can use SyncToy from Microsoft. It's free software and really easy to use. There is no way to make it automatic, though, so you need to remind yourself to do the regular backups.

  • Time Capsule can't backup external hard drives connected to it. Got that.

Hello Apple Support Communities! This is my first post. Hope this finds you all well My first year as an Apple user. I bought a 2-Tb TC and am running my first backup to my MacBook as I write this.
Problem statement: TC can't backup external hard drives connected directly to it, but the ones connected to the Macs that are connected wirelessly to it. Duly noted. However, the Spotlight will reindex the hard drives connected to the Mac and that will take hours; the whole backup will take days. Thus, excluding the hard drives at "System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy tab" will probably help reduce the time of backup, or just ejecting them will do too. That itself has not proven effective coz it's still taking forever (50Gb in 2 days, still going).
    Questions:
    1) Do I wait until my first backup to my MacBook's internal hard drive is done before I connect my hard drives to my MacBook and attempt another backup? If yes, how do I go about the excessive time Spotlight reindexing takes if I intend to backup my hard drives connected to my MacBook?
    2) Is there any other way of speeding up the first-time backup?
*Note: All versions of OS and firmwares are up-to-date. TC is connected to an external wireless router. TC is intended to be used as backup device and / or file server only.
P/S: Apologee if this has already been discussed before, thus, a link to previous discussion thread would highly be appreciated)

How do I backup the externel hard drives connected to my MB. I was under the impression that that has already been done, because I've read it somewhere in a discussion that said it's done automatically unless I exclude it from a backup, which I didn't. So it's supposed to backup the external hard drivestoo because I had them connected to my MB the entire time during the backups.
By default an external drive is excluded.. the list is odd.. if I plug a drive into the mac.. it immediately is listed as excluded.
This is not the list of included.. this is the list of excluded.. remove it from the excluded list to include it.
It is kind of reverse polish notation in backups.
If I want to enter the Time Machine, should I enter it with the TM turned on or off?
Not sure what the question means. If you use the star wars display and want to recover files then use TM off.. but read up pondini.. how to do restore etc.
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
15A in particular on the how to use TM.
When do I uplug the ethernet and use the wireless connection instead?
Once you have finished the main backup you can go back to wireless. The incremental backups are mostly very small.

  • Use portable hard drive for Time Machine & other things

I recently purchased a 1 TB portable hard drive. I'd like to use it for my Time Machine backups, as well as moving my iTunes library there. Is this an easy change? I'm not super familiar with hard drive set ups. Will I have to create any partitions on the drive?
    Thanks!

You're welcome. Make sure your drive is formated as Mac OS Extended (journaled), GUID partition table.
Here's a nice link to use for Time Machine information.
You can partition the drive if you want to organize your various backups. For example you might create a Time Machine partition and Other Files partition. When Time Machine is working, it creates a folder (Backups.backupdb) and places the Time Machine backups in that folder. The rest of the partition is open to add whatever you want. I have multiple partitions on my USB external drive with Time Machine backups separated from other backups.

  • How do I delete files from a portable hard drive

I've been backing up my MacBook Pro on an external portable hard drive. I need to delete some but not all the files from that portable hard drive permanently. When I highlight them and click to move them to Trash I get a message telling me this cannot be done because they are Read Only files? How do I go about it. I am required by work to delete them off this hard drive. Do I have to reformat the hard drive? If so how do I go about it?

You can easily delete files from a Time Machine Backup:
Click the Time Machine icon in the Dock.If the Time Machine icon isn’t in the Dock, look for Time Machine in the Applications folder.
Use the arrows or the timeline along the right side of your screen to browse through the backups Time Machine created. The windows behave just like Finder windows, so you can open folders, click items in the sidebar, and use the search field in the upper-right corner of the window.
When you find the item you want to delete, select it, and then open the Action menu (looks like a gear) and choose Delete All Backups for the item.
