Phantom Files!

I accidentally posted this somewhere else, but it works best here.
We use Quark 5 in Classic Mode on our G5s running OS X (10.3.x). Whenever we use one of the Classic Mode dialog boxes, like Open or Save As, we see files that don't exist. I can visually confirm they're not on the desktop and they don't show up in the Terminal, but Classic Mode lists them anyway. Check out my screen shot. "PRAMID" is definitely not there, but Classic Mode is convinced. Also, in the Get Picture dialog, there is an EPS that I can actually place on the document even though it's not really there. What are these phantom files?

Sounds like the files are invisible in OS X, but become visible in OS 9 because OS 9 doesn't understand the Unix type of invisibility.

  • Phantom files(.cine) in Premiere Pro CC. darker than normal ?!

    hallo everybody,
    i am Cristiano from Italy.
when i import phantom file (.cine) in premiere they become dark, like a LUT is applied as defoult on .cine files.
    someone can help me?
    thank you

bump this thread. Honestly, why Adobe isnt adressing the issue there ? The phantom .cine files are currently a pain to color correct. they are darker and greener. Completely off. I read somewhere else in this forum the same issue and someone from adobe named Kevin said 1 year ago they are going to fix this : never happened, as it seems phantom users are ver low in numbers (???) We are working with phantom files everyday, and Premiere is the way to go, as Resolve workflow doesnt always match clients budgets.
i Also understand this might be a Vision Research problem with their stupid proprietary codec, but Gluetools is not good (expensive and slow) and Resolve round trip from proxies to raw is pain in the ***. We need Adobe support for this. Please...

  • Finder search shows deleted "phantom" files

I had recently attempted to uninstall Native Instruments FM8, and in an effort to do so, ran searches through my system Library folder and my user Library folder to find anything related to the software and remove them.  Found around 100 preset sound files related to FM8, sent them to the trash and emptied the trash (not securely).  Then after removing every file as listed on NI's website, restarting my computer, and running another Finder search in my Library folder, the sound files I had deleted earlier appear in the Finder search! However, right-clicking the files and selecting Get Info shows no directory for the file, and the files are unable to be deleted or have permissions modified.
I have already used the Disk Utility to repair disk permissions, but these phantom files still remain in my Finder search !
    Help appreciated!

You probably have some corruption in your Spotlight index.  Try reindexing:

  • Phantom File from Seagate external drive refuses to be deleted

    Good evening!
Purchased This guy: Seagate - Backup Plus 4TB External USB 3.0/2.0 Hard Drive to transfer files from multiple smaller portable drives onto one drive. Wide variety of files; music, audiobooks, movies, photos, work files (CS Suite, fonts), etc.
Copied my "MUSIC_COLLECTION" folder over from this guy: Seagate FreeAgent Go 320 GB 2.5" External Hard Drive - USB 2.0 to the new drive seemingly without incident. Accidentally began copying it a second time into a sub-folder on the new drive, stopped the duplicate transfer, dragged the dupe to the trash and there it lives now as a grayed out item that can't be deleted. When I try to delete it, I get "You have run out of application memory" errors and have to relaunch the finder at best, restart the computer at worst.
I'm on a MacBook Pro, recently updated to Mavericks (OS X 10.9 / 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7 / 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3). Runs happily so long as that new drive isn't connected. But I run into the application memory errors when it is even if all I've got open is one Chrome window and MS Outlook.
I found a Macworld article with instructions to force delete in Terminal. It didn't delete the directory. This is the message I received: rm: /Volumes/kodama/.Trashes/501/MUSIC_COLLECTION: Input/output error
Any thoughts on how I can delete the MUSIC_COLLECTION ghost?
Thanks for any suggestions that may help and Happy Holidays to those who celebrate.
    Best,
    H.

This got a few views so I thought I'd post the solution I was given in case anyone else runs into similar issues. I went to the genius bar at my local Apple store and they pointed out that I hadn't formatted the new seagate drive properly--it was still formatted for Windows. So I copied everything back over to the assorted drives, reformatted the new seagate for mac, and it's been fine since.

  • Phantom file deletion with RH6 and 7

We've been experiencing a situation where a writer working in
a project finishes their work, and when they close the project a
random file is deleted from inside that project silently, usually
not the file they were working on. We usually discover it a day or
so later after we do a complete build and the topic is listed in
our link checking routine or I find it by parsing all the projects
    in SourceControl view.
I first noticed it before we migrated from RH6 to 7, but the
    problem has reoccurred since migration.
Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas or steps I could
take to figure out why this is happening?
    Thanks

  • Phantom files on home page slide show.

Can anyone tell me why two images (originally used for the site mock-up) are showing up on the home page?
    http://lifestlyedesignsco.businesscatalyst.com/index.html
After I got the high res images, I wrote over the original file, so those two files no longer exist, but keep showing up! What's going on? How do I get rid of them??
I have double and triple checked my files, tried to find and delete them from the business catalyst dashborad edit page, and the files are not there either.... I'm stumped!
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you,

    Hi Lorayne
Are you referring to hero images placed on home page ?

  • Phantom file name changes in Finder

    Can anyone help?
I have a FAT32 1Tb (La Cie) drive on my MacBookPro (10.5.8) and Finder is doing very funny things with the contents of one folder on that drive. There are several hundred video files (.mov) and Finder is randomly hiding some or changing their name / thumbnail i.e 1234.mov will vanish in Finder (which sends Final Cut bonkers) but if you drag and drop a new version of that movie clip of the same name into the folder, Finder says that it already exists (but isn't shown). If you plug the drive into Windows (Vista or XP) it sees all the files just fine. Repeated re-booting on Mac etc and Disk Fixes don't resolve anything. Any ideas?
Is this a familiar problem to anyone?
    Thanks guys
    R

    Hi.
The .DS_Store hidden file in that folder may be corrupted. Try deleting it.
    Open Terminal and type:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE (hit Return)
Killall Finder (Hit Return, the Finder will relaunch and the hidden files will be visible)
Now, go to that folder and Trash its .DS_Store file (a new one will be created.
    Back to Terminal, type:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
Killall Finder (the Finder will relaunch and the hidden files will revert to invisible)
These terminal commands are case sensitive.
    Good Luck.

  • EA phantom file

I have a USB drive, which I constantly use to transfer files from my Mac computers, to XP Pro machines and back again. The drive is formatted as a FAT16 drive.
As soon as I plug the drive into an XP machine, it seems a directory (or file, keep reading) called "EA" is created. This strange EA icon only appears in a Finder window when I plug the drive back into my Mac - it does not appear on the Windows machines.
Here's where it gets weird: if I click the EA icon (which doesn't have an icon - simply a blank space where the icon would be, and the label EA below as normal), it disappears. Same happens if I do a select all - the EA thing disappears. As soon as I refresh the Finder window, EA is right back again.
    It continues:
In Terminal, doing a simple ls shows the file on the drive. EA is not listed if I run ls -l or ls -Al though!
Furthermore, doing a recursive find in Terminal results in the following error:
./EA: No such file or directory
What on earth is this EA file/directory, and why does it behave so strangely. If I use Disk Utility to reformat the drive, it all goes fine until I plug it into an XP machine.

Google search reveals some information on the use of this 'file' in FAT filesystems. Never did find out why it behaves so strangely in OS X though.

  • Phantom Files in iTunes Movie Sync Page

    Hi
I seem to have a few movies shown available to sync up to both my iPad and iPhone in the sync movies page in iTunes, however I can't locate them anywhere on my Macbook. They are really old files that I once had synced to a previous iPhone and they seem to be stuck in iTunes. I have tried to look for the files using Spotlight with no luck and when I tried to sync one to my iPhone a message box came up saying the file couldn't be found but the file still remains.
Does anyone know how to clean up iTunes and get rid of these dummy files?
    Thanks

I've managed to sort this out. I didn't have "Movies" selected in iTunes preferences. Once I checked the box, the said movie files appeared in iTunes under "Movies" with the exclamation mark next to them. I was able to highlight them all and delete.

  • ITunes seeks phantom files

upgraded this AM to 9.0.2, and now iTunes is telling me it can't find
8 items to sync to my phone:
"some of the items in the itunes library, including "SampleTitle", were not copied to the iPhone "iPhoneName" because they could not be found."
They're all podcasts, and some of them date to 2007. I always delete podcasts after listening to them, so I know they should be long gone, and these phantom podcasts don't show up in my podcast lists, but a search for the title in my entire iTunes library does turn up the titles.
Any way I can tell iTunes that the phantom podcasts are really deleted, dead, done, gone?

The fix: made serial screen shots while scrolling through the error message window showing the offending items, then searched for the items in the whole iTunes library (they were not visible in the general list, but were findable by search), then highlighted and deleted each. Eight phantoms dispatched, and all seems happy.
But it was annoying, and still no idea why items from 2 years ago were suddenly causing trouble after the update from 9.0.1 to 9.0.2.

  • Strange behaviour, screen "playing possum," phantom files...

    Hello all,
My 6 month old Mac Pro Quad has of late begun behaving strangely...The symptoms do not appear to be directly related, but if any or all of the following sounds familiar I would appreciate any advice.
    - Upon waking from sleep screen jitters, and "dies." computer boots normally, and I have access to audio controls, eject, etc., but the screen remains off (led on and solid however). After talking to Applecare, zapping the PRAM followed by resetting the SMC appears to have solved the problem. After one week no additional problems with the screen.
-Following a restart several days later, I discover that the files I had worked on since the SMC reset are gone. poof, completely disappeared. They are not to be found in Time Machine either, it is as if they never existed. My girlfriend tells me some music she added since the reset has also disappeared (she has a different user)
    - I run Onyx as I (try to) regularly do. SMART status is listed fine, and the drive is only 8 months old (I put it in the new computer when i got it), but Onyx reports that the drive needs to be repaired. I repair the permissions, retry Onyx and everything goes through like normal.
    - I redid the work lost (not much) and the files do now show up in Time Machine, but I have yet to restart again...
Should I be worried? Could these be symptoms of a deeper problem, or is this just a minor glitch that snowballed a little? The computer has been completely normal for the last 36 hours, so here's hoping I'm out of the woods...
    thanks for any feedback!

To repair a drive, you need to boot into single user mode; or boot off another drive (you do not want to use an older version of Disk Utility than currently using to repair permissions).
SMART is only going to tell how based on its limited ability, it is not predictive.
Don't rely on Apple First Aid, invest in Disk Warrior to do a more thorough job. Disk Utility can give a false sense of security.
Backup. Make sure to have a bootable clone of your system, and a disk drive for emergency repairs.
A hard restart means that changes to files, the directory, the volume information block can be lost.
Repairing permissions (ownership, security and such) is not going to help with file integrity and directory damage.
You may need to repair your backup drive, too. And if I were you, I would not rely on just one method or one backup set.
Start using Disk Warrior and SuperDuper is my advice, and invest in a couple backup drives, and to have an on-hand replacement system drive "just in case insurance."

  • The Phantom Files! (HELP!)

I had my iPod (4th gen) hooked up to an HP Pavilion zv6000 laptop. I have been using it with the laptop for months. Yesterday, I clicked the Eject button in iTunes and waited for the iPod to show that it was ok to disconnect. I disconnected, and suddenly it shows 0 songs.
Here's the catch: all of the songs are still on the iPod! I went directly into drive E: to see and they're all there.
    Overview:
    1) iTunes says, "... Cannot read iPod ... Use iPod Updater to restore it..."
    2) iPod Updater says, "Cannot mount iPod"
    3) The iPod itself shows "Capacity: 37.2 GB"
    4) The iPod itself shows only 3.2 GB available.
    5) Through windows explorer, I can see, and play on the computer itself, all music files on my iPod.
Any help? All appreciated. Thank you!

If I can save my music from demise, I would of course like to do that. But if not, at least help me to restore it. It's virtually useless right now =(
By the way, I have tried the following already:
    - Resetting the iPod (both while connected and not)
    - Reinstalling both iTunes and iPod Updater (both up to date)
    - Crying

  • TC and WD500 External drive - Locks up when copying large files

I have a TC with a Western Digital 500GB my Book connected to the USB port on the TC that I use for network Storage. Everything works fine until I try to copy large files or directories from the Finder mounted share. After the copy freezes the external drive can no longer be seen by airport utility. If I look at disks it sees the disk but no partition. I have to power cycle the external drive to have TC see the drive again. Then I disconnect the drive and plug it in directly to the MAC and run disk utility and his repairs the journal. I have to do the repair every time it locks up. Should the external drive be formatted different or does it have to be connected to a USB hub. Or is this just a bug with the TC and afp ?

I have this very same problem.
I tried to copy a 4GB+ folder from the Macbook to the 500GB MyBook attached to my TC and it froze.
Now the the files on the MyBook are invisible when attached to the TC ("0 Items") but are available when the drive is connected directly to the Macbook. I have run disk utility but it hasn't helped. The disk is FAT 32 formatted and the files on the MyBook are still invisible over the network.
When the drive attached to the Macbook directly I can see a 'phantom' file with the same title as the 4GB+ folder I'd tried to copy. This file is "ZERO KB" and it cannot be deleted (error code -43).
Anyone have a clue what is happening here?

  • How do I transfer a movie file from my iPad to my MacBook Pro?

I recently accidentally deleted all media files that existed in the iTunes Media folder on my MacBook Pro. I have managed to recover almost every file, the only one I have yet to recover is a movie that was redeemed through iTunes after I purchased it as part of a DVD/Blue-Ray/Digital Copy combo pack. It is no where to be found on my hardrive yet the 'phantom' file still extsts within my iTunes library. After checking all of our family's Apple devices (2 iPhones, 5 iPads, 1 older MacBook, & 1 MacBook Pro) I was delighted to discover the movie still exists on my stepson's iPad Mini! Only now I cannot seem to find a way to 'transfer' this movie file back onto my MacBook Pro. I am refusing to sync or update his iPad Mini in fear that I might loose the only copy of the movie I have left! Can someone please help me transfer this file back to my MacBook Pro? Thanks so much!

This talks about iTunes 10, but it should work the same way in iTunes 11. Transferring purchases for an iDevice to your Mac.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2554
It should be File>Devices>Transfer Purchases, I think
You must be using the same Apple ID in iTunes on your Mac that your son is using on the Mini or the movie will not transfer.

  • How do I get rid of files that only show up on my iPod, but not on my computer when connected? These files appeared after I reconnected my iPod to my computer, and appear to be music files linked to a website.

I purchased an album on itunes and everything was fine. Then when I reconnected my ipod and it did some autosync (which I have it set up to do manual sync) it added every single song a second time, but apparently they are some sort of internet file, that will only play when I have internet connection. These files won't show up through my computer at all and I can't figure out a way to delete them directly from my ipod either. It's incredibly annoying as when I try to listen the album it plays through two songs, then automatically quits playing when it gets to these phantom files...

This is not an itunes question at all.
Try posting in a more appropriate forum.
