Phantom icons

I have a recurring issue that I can't get rid of.
The list of files displayed in the Download folder icon in the Dock includes files that are displayed twice. Even if I delete the files altogether, one occurrence of each file keeps showing up in the Dock folder (not in the Finder).
When I clear caches using Onyx or when I zap PRAM, things come back to normal. I think I also once removed Dock preferences and it also solved the issue temporarily. As soon as I modify a file in the Download folder, things get weird again.
I also had the problem with Leopard.
Any ideas?

The issue does not appear in other accounts.
I'm pretty sure I did follow the corrupt preferences lead some time ago but I'll try it again later today (when I can restart my laptop to make sure everything is clean).
right, delete the file /users/yourusername/library/preferences/com.apple.dock.plist and log out/in or restart.

I tried to update a numbers of apps from the AppStore but they stayed in a wait state and never got updated. I restarted the ipad with no luck, they would not update. I finally deleted the apps from the ipad but the icons still remain with the icon still in the wait state. How can I delete the icons from the ipad and reinstall the apps.

If there are multiple apps trying to download at once, only one can download at a time and the rest say "Waiting" until it is then their turn. Try this. Double tap the icon of the Waiting app, and it should resume the download.

Another thing to try - Turn the iPad Off & then back ON.
    If that doesn't work:
    •  Log out of your iTunes store account.  Go to Settings > Store > Sign Out Then press the Home button.
    • Then press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously and don't release them when it brings up the Turn Off screen; keep holding them until the Apple logo appears.
    • After restart, the Waiting should be gone.

  • Mystery icon gunking up iPad

I don't have any pending app downloads. On the last page of my iPad there is a solid white icon that says "Waiting...". It appeared a couple days ago. Since then, I can't update any of my apps. Holding down icons doesn't work. This "phantom icon" has no "x" to remove it from the desktop. Please advise.

Please use the search function on the right and search the iPad forum for:

You will get many discussions answering your question. Your specific question gets asked about once a day. Please use the search function. It is there for a reason.

Just reset the iPad by holding the power and home keys past the 'power off' message, switch back on and the icon will almost certainly be gone.

The app is downloaded from internally hosted server.

I also have this problem with ios app and have reproduced the problem on multiple devices. It only happens when i use OTA installation process with exported ipa. I am following the apple docs for ios distribution for testing. I am not using a 3rd party (testflight, betatesters etc.) for this, its an internet facing  web server (azure) with all the proper mime types etc. setup. The install works fine, meaning i get the correct prompts to install, my app installs and runs, but I end up with an additional phantom icon, usually hung in an "installing" state, basically like prabu4u shows in his scenario. This icon/app can't be deleted using standard means (via xcode, itunes, hard/soft resetting of device, changing device language settings).
here is a brief section of console log, that is similar to prabu4u:

I do not believe this is a network, connectivity or web server issue. The udid of my device (and other test devices) are registered in the protal, they are all running updated version of ios7.
I believe its an issue (caused by me) with the provision profile (probably the distribution) packaged in the app. I have validated that the profiles are in the portal and are synched with xcode5 using organizer->devices->iphone->provisioning profies. it shows both the ios team prov profile and the ios adhoc distribution profile created from my developer account. They both show valid profile status with expirations in 2014.
I have done clean builds, rebuilds and redeploys of the exported ipa (generated using ad-hoc deployment scheme in xcode5), but the end result is the same. I always end up with the phantom icon.
I have read other posts that say they use a 3rd party tool to delete the icon, which is fine, but I really want to avoid this by correctly developing and depploying the app.
any ideas on where i made my mistake(s) ? thanks, bob

  • Stop external drive auto-mounting with utf8=1 option

The filenames on my external disk aren't showing up right.  I've used and am using a typical GNOME setup, and this only started happening when I stopped upgrading for a long while, then went with a complete re-install.
A little experimenting showed that mounting it without the utf8=1 option fixed those filenames. Given the labyrinth of HAL, DBus, udev and DeviceKit, how do I stop my vfat external drive mounting with utf8=1?
There's more info over at the cross-posted thread in Desktop Environments, but I felt it would be more appropriate to ask here instead.

I've "fixed" the issue by adding this line to /etc/fstab:
    UUID=3BEC-9DA3 /media/WD\040Passport vfat rw,user,uid=1000,gid=100,shortname=mixed,dmask=0077,utf8=0,noauto,flush 0 0
This stops the utf8=1 option being used when I hotplug my external disk.
However, GNOME now has a phantom "WD Passport" external drive icon. It never seems to point to anything, and whenever it's so much as selected, an error dialog appears saying that nothing is mounted there. Another, actual drive icon can access the disk, but the phantom icon is annoying.
Does anybody have a better way of setting mount options in this setup than using /etc/fstab?
If not, does anybody know how to get rid of the phantom drive icon?

  • "finder preferences" stuck in Dock

    Hello,
on right most part of the Dock, I always see the "Finder preferences" icon. Still, the Finder preferences window is not open nor reduced.
I have tried to right click it: the only option is to open it but then, it does nothing.
I can't drag it to the trash can.
I have tried to manually open and minimize the "real" finder preference windows only to notice that second icon appears on the dock. That icon behaves normally as a reduced window would.
Any idea on how to get ride of this "phantom" icon?

You can't just drag it off your Dock and "poof" it?

  • Same mounted shares different user accounts problem

I have two accounts on my MacPro that mount 4 smb shares from a Windows Server and two AFP shares from a NAS in an automater script
The shares work fine but when the other user logs on they can see the mounted shares but they are the generic blue folder icon with the red circle no access icon at the bottom of the icon.
They do not have access to the "icon" share even though they have the same share mounted and have access to the share.
When I remove the phantom "icon" share it removes the "real" mounted share from the other users account.
What or can I do anything to stop the redundant nonaccessable shares from being mounted?
    Thank You

One additional comment on this: I did change iTunes preferences so that the location of iTunes files is the shared folder. With that I'd expect each user to be pointed to the same iTunes folder, but that's not the behavior.

  • Help! Total System reset after upgrade to mountain lion!

I just upgraded my Mac pro from Lion to Mountain lion.  At first, it was running slow, seemingly because of all the social updates.  So I turned off notifications for Twitter, email, etc..  I ran disk utility and repaired the disk.  I restarted a few times.  It was working better after that.  I did some work, then shut off my computer.
This morning I started my computer to what looks like a freshly installed OS!  My dock is smaller, because all of my bought apps are missing.  My personal photos are missing, documents in the download folder, folders on my desktop, all missing.  I looked in the app folder and see Aperature still there but a social app I use Adium shows as a phantom icon.
What could have happened??  How can I retreive my old docs?
    Any help is appreciated!

You may have logged in as a different user, probably Guest. Log out and try again.

  • Mac Mail: Unread mail counter on dock icon shows "phantom" unread mails

The mailconter of my Mac Mail icon on the dock shows 25 unread messages, but I'm unable to find these inside Mac Mail as unread messages.
I did check all mailboxes and their subfolders for any undread messages that might be inside them, but I didn't find any.
Is there any way to reset or recalculate the unread mail counter for the dock icon?

    Hi Robert
The proposed rebuild did suddenly reveal the 25 unread mails insinde my archive mailfolders. By marking these as read again now shows the correct count of unread mails on the dock icon.
Thanks a lot, your hint was most helpful!

  • Mountain Lion changes my google chat icon / avatar

I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion 10.8.2, and regularly, after a few days of use, I notice that my Google chat icon / image / avatar is being changed to an image that I have on my local machine, that I once had as my login avatar, but have not used now for over 8 years!
It seems that Mountain Lion is telling Google's chat (but not Google+, or facebook) to use this image as my avatar for google chat, even though I am not explicitly telling it to, AND both my contacts and login profile images (System Preferences -> Users & Groups)  on my mac are set to the correct image I want.
Originially, my avatar was an animated gif, but I'm trying to replace that everywhere with a standard gif just in case that's the problem, but it doesn't seem to be helping!
Does anyone know where else I may be having this phantom image of me, from 8 years ago show up??  The picture is not my current login or contacts pictures...
I did look at this discussion:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/19272677#19272677 but changing my contacts image, even to a standard jpg/gif, did not help.
Does anyone know where else I may be having this phantom image of me, from 8 years ago show up??

Ok... I figured it out on my own...
Messages will regularly (~1 hour I think) change all the avatar/profile images it can for all the various jabber, AIM, etc (including gchat, since it's jabber protocol).  I thought it was changing it to my Address book or "contacts" profile, or my login images, but these are independent of the one Messages was using (atleast for me). Here's how I fixed this for me:
Go to Mac OS Menu Bar (when focussed in Messages):
    Messages -> Change My Picture...
Then drag an image you want to use into one of the "recents" tab, use the "other" tab, or take a picture of yourself using the web cam.  Once you've selected a photo, you can crop it within the image window, or leave it alone.  When you're ready, just click "done" button.
That's seeming to fix this PITA for me... why Apple decided my Mac's account image, Contacts profile, and Messages avatar image should all be different... beats me.

  • How do I get rid of a phantom podcast on my iPhone?

I subscribe to a number of daily podcasts. I regularly discard old episodes that I don't want by connecting the iPhone to my MacBook Pro and deleting them. In one of my subscribed podcasts there is a phantom episode showing on the iPhone screen, dated 23 August, that does not appear in iTunes when I connect the iPhone so I cannot delete it. It does not play when I select it. I have tried deleting the program altogether from my list of podcasts and resubscribing, but it still appears. I would not worry about it except that I suspect it is the cause of some problems I am having playing this particular program in the car. Any suggestions appreciated. Is there some way of deleting podcasts using the iPhone itself, rather than doing it through the computer? (iPhone 3Gs, 32 ghz, 4.3.5)

I had this problem on my iPhone 4S under iOS 6 after trying Apple's Podcasts app. I did not like it so I deleted and all the Podcasts reappeared in my iPhone's Music app. However there was a podcast for a popular show that remained. There was a description, no icon, and no content. I was unable to delete the phantom podcast by swiping left to right (which is normal behavior, but I thought I would try anyway) I tried resubscribing to the podcast with iTunes which just produced a usable file next to the phantom file. I deleted the subscription; the phantom file remained.
Then I came across a tip on another forum: On my iPhone I went into Settings -> General -> Usage -> Music (which is in the Storage list on that page). When you click on Music, it will take awhile for your iOS device to calculate and display everything. Once it displays everything, there is a section for Podcasts. you may need to tap "Show All" to see it, but in my case the phantom miscreant was there. I swiped to delete it successfully and have been phantom podcast free ever since.

  • CS3 Bridge will not launch tried 'ctrl' icon doesn't work.

Adobe Bridge has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
this is the message I get when i try to launch Adobe Bridge -
I called tech support & although I've spent $$$ for master collection CS3 - and so many other adobe programs/software for myself & others.. they are unwilling to offer any support other than a paid issue, which really chafes.
so here I am, throwing seeds into the wind hoping i can get back to work after wasting a nother day with this this.
there is no phantom instance of Bridge.
I have a wacom tablet. I cannot get to any 'preferences' screen with any combination of ctrl, alt, ****..
    Bridge will not launch.
    Help please? thanks

    Curt Y answered this in another thread;
If you can not get the reset window, you are doing something incorrectly.
    1.  Bridge has to be closed.  Check the Task Manager to make sure no copy is running in the background.
    2.  You have to press and HOLD the Crtl key when you click on the start icon for Bridge.
    3.  If successful you will get a reset window with 3 options.
    in this thread;
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2735898#2735898
the key point is step 2 HOLD... this is nowhere else in the forums..
so, again, thanks to Curt Y for the answer/
I checked all three boxes & Bridge did launch. Why is this so obscure.. and why could tech support just tell me that..
    oh well.
    again. thanks.

  • External drive creates "phantom" drives inside built in HD.

Has this happened to anyone else? My External storage drive (Maxtor 250GB One-touch) has somehow created 3-4 other "phantom" drives in my build in HD. Basically when I download something directly into my External, it sometimes will create a separate HD and store it into my internal HD, eating away my free space on the internal. This wouldn't be a problem, however, I can't seem to locate the "fake" drives ANYWHERE! I can access them when attempting to open a file, but there's no way I can delete the drives themselves. I know this sounds really stupid, but somehow it's happened and about 5-10 GBs of my internal HD is being taken up by these "phantom" drives that I can't seem to locate. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Hi, Adam, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Your post sure does sound strange, but that may only be a product of the way you're describing what you see. Can you identify a particular downloadable file that has behaved this way for you, so I can have a look and download it for myself?
My suspicion is that you're downloading .dmg files, which are disk images. [Read about disk image file formats here.] When you double-click a .dmg file's icon, the file is decompressed into a "virtual disk" that is mounted on your desktop. Double-clicking the icon of that "disk" shows you its contents, just as if it were a floppy disk, CD, hard drive or flash drive. What is really throwing you, however, is the fact that the real disk space occupied by those files on the virtual disk is always on your startup volume, not some other volume such as your external drive. This is true even if the original .dmg file resides on another volume. As the .dmg is expanded, its decompressed contents are written to the startup volume, not to the volume where the .dmg is located.
You can free up that space on your internal drive by "ejecting" the virtual disks that appear on your desktop. And you can then free it up on the external drive by trashing the .dmg files and emptying the Trash. If you try to trash the .dmgs while the virtual disks are still mounted on the desktop, you'll be told they are in use and can't be trashed. You must "eject" the virtual disks first.

  • How do I find and delete phantom email messages?

The icon says I have five new messages (up from one a few weeks ago), but I can't find them in any of the folders (I have looked on both phone and computer). I have also changed my settings to erase deleted messages in 24 hours, but the phantom messages still seem to exist. How do I find and delete them.

Under the file tab in iTunes, select Display Duplicates. From there you can delete them as well.
