"Phantom Remnant" - How to remove a non-existing server from Snow Leopard

I have a very strange problem that I am sure has a very simple solution, but I cannot figure it out.
Previously, my network was centered on my Time Capsule, which, due to router settings, was at 192.168.1.1. However, since moving, the address has changed, but my Mac Pro continues to look for it as a server or device.
It presents itself any time there is a network or filesystem request of any sort. So anytime I click on Finder (or PathFinder), click on a folder, file, connect to a server, etc., I get a window that pops up saying:
Connection failed
The server "192.168.1.1" may not exist or it is unavailable at this time.
I cannot figure out where the Mac stores it's list of servers that it has used in the past. I have looked through all of my apps that cause this to happen, in their preferences, and I've searched for hours on Google to no avail. It does not happen when I am using a web browser, so I don't think it's looking for the server as a DNS service, but I am thinking it is looking for the Time Capsule as a disk server or something similar.
Does anyone have any ideas of where else to look? I am comfortable at any level of editing or command line usage. I have set up networking dozens of times on Linux/Windows boxes, but I've not touched the details on my Mac (never had to before ). Is there a way to "flush" the hosts SL thinks exist?
PS: My new network setup is kind of screwy, and my router to the internet is at 192.168.1.1 internally (and in /etc/resolv.conf), but it does not have a disk of any sort inside (that is accessible at least), but I still have the TC on an internal network with 10.0.1.1 as it's new address.
TIA

This may help go into the Utilities folder and lunch Keychain Access.
Make sure you click on login and make sure the category is All Items. Delete all the references to your previous network that appears on the right hand side.

  • How can I upgrade to Lion again from Snow Leopard?

My Macbook Pro (Late 2011), was shipped with OSX Lion but due to some software compatibility issues, I downgraded my OS to Snow Leopard, but now that software is fully compatible with OSX Lion and Mountain Lion, how can I upgrade to Lion again?

    Hi Viaixtapa, well long story...
I phoned the number above and purchased a license.  The process worked fine, the Apple Tech took my particulars, I received an email right away acknowelging my purchase and one from the Tech giving me his details so that I could come back to him if I needed help.  But when I went to download Lion it would not download because I do not have the requirements to load it, mine is an Intel Core Duo instead of an Intel 2 Duo or later.
The clerk in the Apple store in Vancouver checked the details of my machine and told me I could load it if I upgraded the memory.  But apparently that was incorrect.  The Tech I who sold me Lion checked too and said no, my iMac is not capable of supporting Lion.  So a plus and minus answer.  I did get Lion, but was unable to load it, yours is a 2008 model so you should have no trouble.  Why not try the number or the international website above from Steve, nothing ventured, nothing gained.  I will just keep saving my pennies toward a new iMac!!

  • How does one update to Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard?

My friend has Snow Leopard and wants to up date to Mountain Lion, how is it possible for her?

See Here  >  Upgrade to Mountain Lion
Would Also Recommend that you do a Bootable Clone Backup of your current Hard Drive Before attempting any Major Upgrade...
By far the easiest way to make a Backup, is to use something like
    SuperDuper  http://www.shirt-pocket.com/
    or CCC  http://www.bombich.com/
That way, should anything untoward happen during the Upgrade...
    You will NOT LOSE ANYTHING.
(Get an EHD that is at least equal to your current Drive...)
Also, Check here for compatibility of 3rd party Software you may be using...

  • How do I restore my operating system from Snow Leopard back to Mountain Lion on line after erasing my hard drive?

I had to erase my hard drive.  I loaded Snow Leopard with the disk I got with my computer, but I purchased Mountain Lion several months ago and don't have support any longer.  How do I get back to the Mountain Lion operating system, on line?

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
You must perform the last step - updating to 10.6.8. Until then you have no access to the App Store. When you can sign into the App Store using the same Apple ID with which your purchased Mountain Lion, click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. Locate your Mountain Lion purchase line then click on the Install button on the right to re-download.

  • How do you remove a non-existant folder from the sidebar?

I am having trouble removing a file from 'places' in my sidebar. The file doesn't exist any more. I cannot drag it out nor can I highlight it to 'get info' to see if it has somehow become locked. I hope someone can help.

You don't have to highlight it, simply Right or Control click the offending item and select "Remove from Sidebar."

  • How do I migrate my Mail configuration from Snow Leopard to Lion manually?

I wasn't able to  move the data from my old MacBook to my new MacBook running Lion, because I was using FileVault on the old system, and the Migration Assistant doesn't support home directories with FileVault enabled.
I've managed to migrate everything without issue -- Music, Photos, Movies -- all worked great.  However, when I try to start Mail under Lion, I get prompted to reconfigure Mail.  I've copied the ~/Library/Mail folder and the Preferences file (com.apple.mail.plist) to the new laptop (via SFTP) but Mail won't pick up from where it left off.
Is there something I've missed?  How should I perform this migration?
    Thanks in advance.

Lion mail is different than SL. It should have converted the old content to the new format when you opened Mail. Quit Mail and move the contents of the Mail folder from the home Library to the desktop.
When you start Mail, use the import from Apple Mail feature to import everything from that folder. That should bring in all accounts and mailboxes in Mail.

  • How long does it take to upgrade from Snow Leopard to OS X Mavericks?

I am trying to upgrade my Snow Leopard to Mavericks but when I start downloading I new icon appears saying OS X Mavericks waiting and it does not show any advancement in the downloading bar.

It is a 5 GB+ size file, so it isn't a quick download, especially if you are attempting to download it via Wi-Fi. If you can download it via Ethernet it will be 2-3 times faster.
Go to the App Store/Purchases and make sure the download hasn't paused. If it has there will be a resume button you can click.

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.
You will need a minimum of 10-12 GBs of free space to install Yosemite, however, that is a bare minimum and should be at least twice that amount.

  • How do I remove Lion and go back to Snow Leopard OS?

How do I remove Lion and go back to Snow Leopard?

If you have the white upgrade disk (originally, you had Leopard and bought SL later), easy. I'm not sure if you have the grey disks (you bought the machine with SL).
If you have the white disk, the first thing you do is get a USB external HD. Format it to GUID with disk utility.
Insert the white SL disk and restart. Follow the instructions to install SL on the external disk.
Have a look here for a step by step tutorial for setting up the external HD: http://www.maciverse.com/installing-snow-leopard-onto-an-external-hard-drive.htm l
From here on in you have two choices:
    1. You can run SL off the external disk and keep Lion and all your files/data on the internal disk.
This is the easiset thing to do. You can open files from your Internal Lion disk by navigating through to it in Finder when you're booted in to SL on your external disk. Practical if you have a desktop machine, maybe not if you have a laptop that you need to carry everywhere (you'd have carry the external HD with you all the time).
Any non-Lion only (i.e., not Safari, Preview, Terminal and Mail Lion upgrades) apps should also run off your Lion disk when you're booted into SL, but if you have any problems, just drag them from the Lion Apps folder to the SL apps folder.
    2. Move everything over to the external disk if you plan to install SL back to your internal disk.
Start copying over all your apps and files manually by dragging them from the internal disk Apps and Folders to the external disk Apps and Folders. If you have Time Machine, you can also copy your files by navigating to Time Machine through the Finder rather than trying to use the Time machine interface.
You might spend some days doing this, but it's worth doing it manually. When you're done and sure you have everything, google 'Carbon Copy Cloner'. Download it (its free), and clone your external HD to your internal HD. SL restored!

  • How to Remove a bad mailbox server and add new mailbox server to DAG and copy mailboxes over

    DAG
    2- cas - VM
    2- mbx- physical blade  (mbx1, mbx2)
    5- mailbox databases
    OS: Win 2008 SP2
    Exchange 2010SP3
    Storage: Tegile Disk jbod  Luns
We have bad disks on mbx1.  our plan is to get a new blade to replace the bad one named mbx3. we need to do this asap since we are running on 1 server without failover capability
    How can I safely:
    1. Add a new mailbox server to the DAG
    2. Copy\Move the databases from the old (passive) server to the new server
    3. Remove the bad mailbox server from DAG

You'll want to make sure that the new server is on all the same networks that the server you are removing is on, specifically networks that are DAG networks. Also, you'll want to avoid using Windows Network Load Balancing on the new mailbox server
since it will be part of the DAG. Also, just as you did with the current DAG members, ensure that the disk drive letters match the existing disks that hold databases & logs. Other than that, it's as simple as you have stated.
1.) Once you have the new mbx server built & configured with the mailbox role, you can use:
Get-DatabaseAvailabilityGroup "Name of DAG" | Add-DatabaseAvailabilityGroupServer "Name of New MBX Server"
2.) Add the databases to the new DAG member:
Add-MailboxDatabaseCopy "name of database" -MailboxServer "name of new DAG member" -ActivationPreference "[you decide based on the server replacing mbx1]"
3.) Once your databases are Mounted and/or Healthy on the new DAG member, you'll want to remove the databases from the "bad" server (make sure they are all passive on the server first):
    Get-MailboxDatabaseCopy "SERVER\Database" | Remove-MailboxDatabaseCopy
4.) Once all of the databases are removed from the "bad" DAG member, remove him from the DAG:
Get-DatabaseAvailabilityGroup "Name of DAG" | Remove-DatabaseAvailabilityGroupServer "Name of old MBX Server"
Before you pull the blade, uninstall Exchange Server gracefully, as this will save you AD & Exchange headaches later on.

How to remove "Other..." from my sign-in screen?
I was trying to change an Administrator Account by starting from my Leopard Install DVD and from the Utilities menu choosing Reset Password, etc. A longish story involving my inability to shut-down the computer while others are signed in but not actually using the computer. In Tiger I was able, since moving to Leopard I need to go into each of their accounts and manually log each of them out. A headache.
For right right now I need to get rid of the Other... account name, etc from my sign-in screen. How do I do this in plain English please? I find all this Admin jargon does my head in.
